I’m sure there are a few card players here that’ll appreciate this:
Play in a weekly poker game with a rotating handful of retired farmers, businessmen, etc. I’m by far the youngest guy there @ 44. Cash game, buy in is $100, blinds frozen @ $1 and $2. Game starts at 6 and runs until 10 or so.
Now I’m a decent card player. I’ve won some online tournaments, a handful of live local tournaments and I’ve made a handful of significant cashes in the last 5 years at Horseshoe events (never made a final table) I’ve read Super System and I’m a tight-aggressive player who likes to play premium hands or get my money in with good odds and take my chances.
Last week. 2 hours in. I’ve got about $225 in front of me and I’m the small blind with pocket 3’s. Big blind is big stack at well over $600. 9 players at the table and everyone folds to the blinds. Ordinarily, the blinds would chop (they each get pulled back) and the next hand would be dealt. I asked the big blind if he would chop and we’d move on. He said no, later found out he had Ace-King. I called expecting a raise (to which I would’ve folded) but instead he checked and we’re on to the flop.
Flop: 3-3-Ace
I check. He hammers the flop with a $25 bet (which is terrible betting) and I smooth call.
4th Street: King
Board 3-3-Ace-King
I check. He hammers the flop with $50. I smooth call.
River: King
Board: 3-3-Ace-King-King
I check. He says ‘All In’ I called and said ‘there’s no way somebody didn’t fold a weak King or Ace, I’m certain you’re drawn dead’ Flip over my cards, Quad 3’s over King’s full.
All he had to do was chop the pot and move on.

My wife and I play poker with nieces and nephews for candy. We will get a couple big bags of stuff, and like Hershey Kisses are $1, Peanut Butter Cups are $5, Cadbury Cream Egg might be $10 etc.
My little niece went all in one time. I can’t remember exactly what she had. It was just her and my wife at that point. A mountain of candy in the middle of the table. My niece thought it was a done deal, and then my wife revealed a total pulled-out-of-the-butt hand and won it all. I can’t remember what she had either.
Regardless, niece was crushed.
Oh well…taught her a valuable lesson, and she hasn’t repeated it!

New doc started working at the local hospital, and he orders a shit ton of foot x-rays. I hate foot x-rays, just really struggle with all the joints and wear and tear changes versus some coalition or pathologic condition. Someone needs to tell this guy to lay off on the foot films.

He is making the hospital some cash by ordering all of those xrays….good for him!!

Ahhh….do you think Podiatrists should be considered more like a dentist?
I don’t think so. They are more mainstream medicine than a dentist, can order lab work and real x-rays and MRIs and the like. They do some crazy surgeries and deal with some horrific neuropathic feet. Honestly I don’t look down to them.
A local gal turned DPT was featured in an article in the local paper, she was talking about the challenges of medical school and residency. I guess I would be lying if I said that didn’t bother me. I only consider medical school as allopathic (MD) or osteopathic (DO) training. Residency ie indentured servitude I am fine with podiatrists or PTs, PharmD’s etc using to refer to that stage of their training.
I am not an arbiter, merely a complainer.
I am actually seeing a podiatrist next week…time to get new foot casts made so I can order new orthro inserts.
The Teacher is having foot surgery at the end of the month. Almost 20 years of standing on her feet all day. She is having Surgery to ‘Correct Bunion, LapidusT* Remv Bone for Graft Minor’, per the paperwork she signed.
5 years ago they operated on the other foot due to falling arch from tendon failure. They (I kid you not) removed the failed tendon, cut/rerouted the tendon from the small toes to replace it, requiring them to drill a hole thru her foot for the reroute. When they were in there they cut/repositioned/bolted on her heel.
I call it Franken Foot after all of that. Now 6-8 weeks of No Load Bearing, that is how we get to spend our summer, yeah.
No retirement for you. Honey, can you…………..

Oh and the School district wants her to input all of her grades 2 days after surgery, they won’t open the web-site for her prior to that but expect her to do it Medicated Post Surgery, @is’t that special@.

I don’t know a lot about bunion surgery, but one thing I know is when that Lapidus name comes up that means it is a big deal.
This surgeon was recommended by her Podiatrist for the 1st surgery, although she looked like a teenager at the time.
The Teacher was going to have this done last year but was positive for the Plaque 2 weeks prior and if postponed she wouldn’t be up and walking in time for the new school year.
That scooter was been used by my mom and nephew and now 2nd time around for The Teacher, we are getting our $$s worth out of it.
A derm buddy of mine (was dating my stepdaughter at the time) blew his Achilles in the classic weekend warrior pickup game of Bball scenario. He zoomed around on one of those scooters for weeks, looked like fun although I teased him mercilessly for looking like a total doofus.
I put a little pink horn on it for The Teacher, she was not amused.
Her big toe bone, not visible toe, curves out and around, it hurts to look at the x-ray.
They have to put everything back where it belongs and ‘tighten up’ the tendons.
Less dramatic than the last time but she wants it done before she retires so it is covered. Heck sounds like she gets disability payments while she is home and I am waiting on her hand and foot (pun intended).
I golfed for the first time this season on Sunday. I forgot to mention that. Did okay, hit the water hazard on the windmill hole, got stuck behind the gorilla’s foot once. No holes-in-one from me, my wife hit one.

Best times I ever had at baseball games were the old Edmonton Trappers, I believe they were an affiliate of the Angels. Could make it to the game after work, think it cost $2 apiece for a date and myself with college ID. We would sit behind the visitor’s dugout and the constant heckling was epic. Think I’ve mentioned it before but one guy had an encyclopedic knowledge of the various foibles and miscues some player down from the pros had suffered, which culminated in the player running out of the batters box, jumping on the roof of the dugout and starting to climb the fence until his teammates pulled him down. Now that is grade A heckling.
Yeah, going to games is great, watching on TV not nearly as great. I do love independent and affiliate games too.

I remember a few years ago over on the DN OJ came up and some dude said OJ never did it and that if he did she deserved it for cheating on him, I think it was probably that BAP guy but either way it was funny in a ridiculous way.
Speaking of wages and job benefits I was musing this morning about Glendive’s dispensaries. If I count correctly there are currently six dispensaries here. I don’t know all of their business models but at least the ones I pass on the way to and from town are open 12 hours a day seven days a week. This at a time when the local establishments struggle with staffing. I guess having a side benefit of being able to enjoy recreational products while working is understated in retaining good staff.
My wife stopped at a local hippie shop (AKA head shop) yesterday to look at paraphernalia and she said both the guys in the store were very helpful and knowledgeable about all the products.

I just pulled up a smoke map and wow, you aren’t kidding. It’s showing Miles City at a PM2.5 of 185 (unhealthy) and Sidney at 402 (hazardous). Billings is only at 66 (Moderate). If it wasn’t trying to rain we’d be able to see a little haze. It looks like we are currently on the southwest of the smoke line. Bozangeles and Livingston are a little elevated. Northwest MT is pretty bad and then it looks like there is just a pocket sinking in over you guys.

What’s weird is, in the …. 11 years I lived in Alberta between Wainwright and Edmonton as a preteen, teenager, and young adult I never recall having significant smoke days. Some haze occasionally but nothing like this visible ash falling to the ground.

I had a memorable weekend moonlighting in Austin MN where a third year ER resident was covering the shop Friday and Saturday night. The guy worked me like a canal mule and the Mayo One helicopter came and picked up patients six separate times over the course of the two nights, at least half of the patients didn’t require transfer to the main shop but that was the way he rolled. Sunday morning 5 am I was running on zero sleep over the last 48 hours, guy offers me a Pepsi and starts loudly talking about the job he was taking out of residency in a couple of months. Very descriptive about time off and his megamillions wage all in front of the ancillary staff. I’d had enough of his pan scan ways and flippant attitude and told him I didn’t want a fin Pepsi when I was hoping to catch a little shuteye and never never never brag about your wage and bennies in front of staff. Guy STFU…what a prick.
Drove home on Monday, my wife’s ex was out in his side by side checking on the yearlings, followed me into the yard and remarked, “So do you intentionally drive the biggest POS vehicle of the seven you own to work?” I told him yup, I want the townspeople to think I’m barely getting by.
