Vikings blog logo

It’s finally Friday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics! Join us for Minnesota Vikings talk, Vikings news, news from around the NFL, and virtually any other topic. On this site, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, you should join us! This is the daily back page, which is wide open. Therefore, you will see discussion of nearly ANY topic here. Our one rule here is: “Remember, be cool to one another”. Also, a word to the wise, don’t feed the trolls. SKOL!!!!!!

Alright, well we learned yesterday that Oregonians will now be allowed to pump their own gasoline (story from NY Post). I hope everyone will be alright out there. I found this story from Reason magazine from back in 2022 when residents had another scare where they feared that they would be forced to have the freedom to pump their own gas. They feared the freedom? Wow.

When the offseason has dragged on as long as this offseason has seemed to drag on, then the silly season seems to get extra silly. There has been very little NFL news out there to talk about. That’s probably a good thing, when there’s NFL news this time of year, it tends to be bad news. We don’t want to see any of that. At least we don’t have to worry about Kirk sending pictures of his junk to a journalist.

Minnesota Vikings News:

SI.com looks at when the Vikings and other teams will report to training camp.

From MSN, Kirk Cousins talks with reporters about KOC’s energy as head coach.

The NFL suspended four players for violating the league’s gambling policy, according to NFL.com.

ESPN looks at which AFC North team could unseat the Bengals. The Ravens are the biggest challenger right now, in my opinion. The Steelers will be formidable once again if/when they get their offense established.

Here’s another gem from the grunge days, this is Alive by Pearl Jam. Enjoy!

A little story for any golfers who might be interested. Some talk below about driving distance Made me think of an interview with Hank Haney on Golf Channel – he was TW coach for years and one of best teachers in country.
In sum, he said most amateurs are playing the course way to long. He said “we should play the course like the pros do”.
450 yard par four. Pros hit a 300 yard drive and a 150 yard 9 iron (somePW)
We hit a 220 yard drive and a 110 yard 9 iron. So comparable hole is 330 yards. As such, amateurs need to play from much shorter tees The game will be much more enjoyable and you will score better. As you get better, you can then move back.
Just a thought for perhaps more enjoyable golf.

You know what, I didn’t say this as I thought some folks might feel offended Haney said also – if you can’t break 90 play the course at like 5220 to 5500 yards. When you get good at that move back.

This a former NY state rep complaining about not getting student debt cancelled.

Most people will point out she bought a $1,000,000 home recently.
Whats really whacked out, is that she thinks $10,000 in debt relief on a $200,000 loan would make any significant difference.

Thats like jumping for joy for paying $9.50 on an item that cost $10.

People like this essentially boasting of their idiocy to the masses make me want to facepalm. She graduates from a top 30 law school and has not found a way to either pay off completely or at least draw down her debt? I myself graduated from medical school in 2004 with $120,000 in debt, scrimped and saved during six years of internship, residency and fellowship (at no point did I make more than $60,000 and IIRC my first year was more like $39,000 – although this is not inclusive of the money I made on the side moonlighting in ERs and such as I became more proficient later in my training) and paid off the higher interest rate Perkins and such, made sure to pay the interest on the unsubsidized Staffords, etc. When I finished PGY-6 in 2010 I had about $125,000 in debt. By 2015 (11 years after graduation using her example), my SL debt was gonzo.

Next she’s going to tell me the interest on her revolving credit card debt is putting her underwater.

I would say, someone with average athleticism and average eye and hand coordination can teach themselves how to swing the club from the inside and bottom it out an inch or two in front of the ball. Once you can do that consistently you can play decent golf.

True, but what caused that 9? Bad ball striking. Teach yourself how to strike the ball solidly first. Know what a good impact position feels like. Your bad shots end up being not so bad.

You’re right I was making it harder, getting distracted by the details. Cluttering my mind with everything from swing thoughts to possible trouble. The mental focus on process is to help clear that stuff out of the way. I’m playing tomorrow morning I’ll see if it carries over from my last 9 today where I was 6 over through 7 and had two bogies to finish.

Lifer Some of them are head cases. Heard many interviews with Nicklaus, Palmer ,Player, Watson etc (and esp Trevinp), they pretty much think these young pros need to grow up and learn to deal with tournament pressure.
For you, it’s a bit mental, but like most amateurs just need to relax, and get all the swing thoughts out of your head.
Look at the De la Torre stuff.

Lifer
Admin
Reply to  JRobert
30 June 2023 4:40 pm

Clearly NVF didn’t watch the video links I posted. They’re nothing more than process over outcome stuff. What to focus on and how to set up, see your shot shape, free your mind to play more stress free, and swing.

I’ve had rounds like that many times over the years and wrote it off to being “on” that day. But it was playing stress free and swinging confidently. I’ve shot 80/81 many times 20 yrs ago so it’s not like I’ve always played the way I am now being a lot older.

The videos are about following a routine that helps get your mind in that state via a routine and letting bad shots and bounces go and move on to the next shot. It was a massive help today I hit twice as many good shots exactly how I wanted. The lower scores will come.

I’m not sitting on a couch with Robin Williams while he tells me it’s not my fault.

NVF is just having a bad day and making this sound like I’m trying to act like a pro, which I am but not in the way he’s inferring.

I’m not saying you are sitting around either. What you’re talking about here is good stuff and the way to “play” golf.
Given some of our conversations after rounds though, I do think you sometimes make the game far to complicated
As such I recommend the de la Torre stuff.and I’d recommend that to anybody who can’t break 90. The game is only complicated if one makes it so.

Lifer
Admin
Reply to  JRobert
30 June 2023 4:58 pm

Absolutely I was way to far down the rabbit hole on swing changes, technical aspects etc working in the industry and being exposed to it all…many many amateurs do the same making the game way to complicated.

This is a game of you against yourself probably more than any other individual sport. How anyone thinks an amateur exploring the psychology and mental aspects of the best ways to approach this game isn’t relevant is beyond me but apparently some here think they’ve got it all figured out so others shouldn’t bother.

I can break 90, have 4x this year. Not routinely but that’s what I’m working on. I’ll check out de la torre’s stuff. I enjoy and always get something out of someone sharing their experiences playing the game and I appreciate you sharing it.

Yeah better to hit straight than long. If I hit it straight I usually get 275+. Had 3 of those today with the process mental focus routine I was implementing. Frees the mind to just swing away. Really works.

You need speed training and likely flexibility exercises and you could get 25+ more yards I bet.

Continuing our discussion from yesterday…

Tom Brady 43 – 2020 Cap Hit 28.375m Salary Cap 198.2m Cap% 14.3%
Defense Rank 8 in points 6 in yards.

Tom Brady 41 – 2018 Cap Hit 15m Salary Cap 177.2m Cap% 8.4%
Defesnse Rank 7 in points 21 in yards

Peyton Manning 39– 2015 Cap Hit 19m Salary Cap 143.28m Cap% 13.2%
Defense Rank 4 in points 1 in yards

Tom Brady 39 – 2016 Cap Hit 14.77m Salary Cap 155.27m Cap % 9.5%
Defense Rank 1 in points 8 in yards

John Elway 38– 1998 Cap Hit 4.8m Salary Cap 52.38m Cap% 9.2%
Defense Rank 8 in points 11 in yards

John Elway 37 – 1997 Cap Hit 2.82m Salary Cap 41.54m Cap% 6.8%
Defense Rank 6 in points 5 in yards

Tom Brady 37 – 2014 Cap Hit 19m Salary Cap 133m Cap% 14.2%
Defense Rank 8 in points 13 in yards

Average % of Cap hit for SB Winning QB over 35 10.8%
Average Defense Rank 6 in points 9 in yards

Kirk’s 2023 – 20.25m Salary Cap 224.8 Cap% 9%

2024 – Salary Cap 256m Projected 15% hit = 38.4m

2025 – Salary Cap 282m Projected 15% hit = 42.3m

2026 – Salary Cap 308m Projected 15% hit = 46.2m

Next 3 years total salary with those added would be 3/126.9 or around 42.3m/year. These are projections. To clarify this is not saying Kirk CANNOT win a Super Bowl, but what it does say is that it is very difficult unless your name is Tom Brady. It also says if you’re going to be running with an older QB you need to have the defensive side of the ball to back them up.

Below is a projected contract for Kirk at 3/135m averaging 45m/year. Leaving the Vikings with around a 32m cap hit when he leaves.

The hits are as follows

2024 – 37.25m Projected Cap 256m Cap% 14.5%

2025 – 47.25m Projected cap 282m Cap% 16.7%

2026 – 51m Projected Cap 308m Cap% 16.5%

2024 comes closest to two of Brady’s hits of 14.3% and 14.2% but the next two years are well beyond that.

Mahomes 2022 Cap hit was 31.95m with 208.2m Cap for 15.3%. He’s the only guy to win a SB with over a 15% cap hit. Is Kirk having those large cap hits, regardless of his ability conducive to the Vikings winning a Super Bowl? Can the Vikings field a defense that’s top 10 in points and yards while Kirk has cap hits that exceed that?

Does re-signing Kirk guarantee more of the same old same old Vikings that do well enough in the regular season to get a ticket to the dance, but not well enough to get past the divisional round?

Is KAM the ultimate dumdum for not re-signing Kirk, or is he making an educated decision based upon the last 35 years of NFL data before him?

IS KAM making the right decision by playing out 2023 before locking himself into a situation that has been shown to be a very tall task in the NFL if your name isn’t Tom Brady?

I really think its super bowl or bust for Kirk.

The data is there. These are facts. I don’t know what Kirk has done to show that he can break through unless his cap hit is so low, that they can stack the defense around him.

Even then… winning the SB after 35 just doesn’t happen very often and without a top 10 defense in points it hasn’t happened.

We sort of hammered this age issue yesterday and the defense some. But before preceding a question – and this was based upon something I read here which said we had like the 12th best paid defense and the 49ers were 11th. Not much difference. If that was true, seems like there is a lot more than money affecting our defensive performance.

Nick Bosa had a 5m cap hit last year and is better than anyone on the Vikings Defense.

Arik Armstead had a 5.8m cap hit

Javon Kinlaw had a 2m cap hit

Dre Greenlaw had a 1m cap hit

I could go on, but Ricks poor defensive drafting recently has done 0 favors for this vikings team.

Will Kwesi’s picks bust this trend in year 2 if they stay healthy? Or will the rookies they picked up this year make an impact? That remains to be seen.

Bosa too. 9ers SB nation site is shit.

Here’s a better list, but the cap hits of the players on their rookie deals who are producing at a high level is the biggest reason. And that will be changing for them soon enough when they have to pay these guyes.

This is all I can provide on that question…

Race is defined as “a category of humankind that shares certain distinctive physical traits.” The term ethnicities is more broadly defined as “large groups of people classed according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background.”

I bet you could take a picture of a person and show it to 100 people and get at least five different answers as to their ethnicity. Thank you for trying to answer the question but it gets back to my pet peeve of people saying they are German or Polish or Italian or African when they are eighth generation Americans.

I like to drive up to Lake Superior and pick Lake Superior agates off the shoreline. I bring them home. My home city address is Cadott.

Are those Lake Superior agates now Cadott agates?

One of these years I’d like to travel to Fairburn SD and pick Fairburn agates. Also would love to visit Montana and find a nice Montana agate.
If/When I do, will they become Cadott agates too?

My grandfather loved picking agates too, I have several of his that he found as a kid, and gave a few to my kid, so are his Lake Superior agates now 4th generation Cadott agates?

But most people just omit the ‘an.’

To be clear, SCOTUS did NOT say student loans were unconstitutional.
SCOTUS said the plaintiffs did not have standing to bring the case to SCOTUS.
Since the lower courts vacated the case, meaning loans couldn’t be cancelled, the plaintiffs went to SCOTUS.

I’m having a hard time breaking 90 now. Keep shooting low to mid 90’s. This mental stuff I believe will shave 4-5 strokes a round maybe a few more. My chipping from the video I watched a month ago is absolutely fantastic. It’s never will I hit it to the green it’s how close to the pin will I get it. Doesn’t matter the lie or angle. Such a good video it changed my short game. I have to keep chipping away at all these areas of my game to get them all better and it should translate to better scores eventually.

Breaking 80 though…man so much would have to go right I just don’t see it happening now.

Thanks I’ll find it. As suggested last time used my 3 wood first few holes and it helped. Got a bad bounce on 2 hit right center of the fairway did a 90 degree bounce under a pile of twigs had to drop. Started using my driver after that and It took until hole 13 before the process helped me find my rhythm with the driver. It’s by far the hardest club to control. Had some great drives then sailed one to the right OB on the front side but figured it out on the back side and didn’t lose a single drive and striped the rest right down the middle. Have to see if I can get that feeling back tomorrow.

Lot of psycho babble but I guess some folks need this kind of internal reinforcement. I stick to my simple plan. Stay relaxed, swing in rhythm, focus on a target. No need for mental gymnastics. I don’t hit perfect shots every time. I hit decent shots a lot though. I call them “good enough shots”. I only really focus on two things in my practice swings, making sure I’m turning back and swinging the club into the ball from the inside, and rotating through so I bottom the club out in front of the ball. I’m not thinking about anything else when I play.

It helps that FDR was itching to get into that war to revive the economy after the great depression. I don’t think Biden is even foolish enough to port our entire Pacific fleet in one harbor. FDR did it to set Japan up and they took the bait.

FDR wasn’t itching to get into the war. He simply understood that basically all of Europe was falling and the U.K. was battling Hitler on its own. FDR knew only U.S. engagement could stop Hitler. In the Pacific, he knew the Japanese could not be stopped either. he had promised the U.S. citizens he would not take the country to war, but knew it was needed. The attack on pearl was a huge error in judgement which led to Isoroku Yamamoto’s famous sleeping giant quote. I don’t agree with the theory that FDR “baited” the Japanese to attack us. It was a surprise attack on a Sunday and the losses were massive. No President is going to set something like that up. There is no actual proof we knew it was going to happen. This theory popped up 70 years after the attack.

I survived. It went pretty quick, actually. I was only there 3 hours. After they removed the initial chunk of flesh, they had to go back and remove a couple of smaller spots, but that was all. Then when he was stitching me up, he had to trim some more skin so it wouldn’t be all bunched up. I have a nice upside down T stick track on my nose. The bandage is so big it looks like a clown nose. So of course, my wife put a clown wig and clown tie on me and took my picture. The family enjoyed that picture more than when I sent them a picture of the big open wound on my nose.

We used to do that on New Year’s Eve. Learned the hard way that you need really level ground – the tube tipped over and the mortar shot at my Mom’s feet. Melted her boot laces.

Interesting article on a fact I was unaware of. Multi states banned admissions to colleges based on race years ago. You’re hated California…banned that way back in 96. These states haven’t given up trying other ways to boost minorities admissions. Its not working.

Can Colleges Be Racially Diverse Without Affirmative Action? Experience Suggests No. (WSJ)

Nine states, including California, Oklahoma, Michigan, Texas, Florida and New Hampshire, have already banned race-conscious admissions, mainly as a result of voter initiatives.

At the Berkeley and Los Angeles campuses of the University of California, the share of Black and Hispanic students fell by about half immediately after a voter referendum in 1996.

“They went through the whole playbook and still are not where they were before,” said Zachary Bleemer, an assistant professor of economics at the Yale School of Management

The University of California has navigated this race-neutral terrain for decades, after a 1996 ballot initiative called Proposition 209 barred the use of race in admissions decisions at public universities. In 2020 voters rejected an effort to reverse the policy.

Since Prop 209 passed, the university has spent hundreds of millions of dollars expanding the pipeline of prospective minority students. The system, which has 10 campuses across the state, nine with undergraduate programs, built partnerships with high schools and community-based organizations in low-income and more diverse neighborhoods. It stepped up recruiting at churches and nonprofits such as Black Girls Code. Once it received applications, it also paid attention to biographical details such as whether someone held a job throughout high school or the first in their family to attend college.

While the proportion of students who are Asian remained far higher than their share of new high-school graduates, Black and Hispanic enrollment at top UC schools has lagged behind. Hispanic students made up 53% of new high-school graduates in California in 2021, compared with 27% of first-year students at the University of California, Berkeley and 36% across the UC system.

Black students, meanwhile, were 5% of the 2021 high school graduating class, 2% of first-year students at Berkeley and 2.4% of first-year students systemwide.

“We have tried multiple avenues to promote these race-neutral means of recruitment and outreach, but there’s only so much that the UC can do,” said Han Mi Yoon-Wu, executive director of undergraduate admissions at the University of California.

I think my favorite part has been the Libs screaming how blacks people aren’t able to get into these places without having a boost.

and then the Libs realizing how racist and stupid they are.

What I find really ridiculous is that the admissions practices at Harvard are severely anti asian american and everyone seemed ok with that. Are asians not considered people of color? Are they just lumped in with white people?

Saw the statistics yesterday on admissions there, Blacks in the 40th percentile of grades and test scores were admitted over asians in the 90th+ percentile. Absolutely racism, but the libs don’t recognize racism unless its against black people.
