Minnesota Vikings Discussion – SkolAsylum: 21 – 23 Jul 2023

IMG_1302.jpeg

It’s finally Friday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics! Join us for Minnesota Vikings talk, Vikings news, news from around the NFL, and virtually any other topic. On this site, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, you should join us! This is the daily back page, which is wide open. Therefore, you will see discussion of nearly ANY topic here. Our one rule here is: “Remember, be cool to one another”. Also, a word to the wise, don’t feed the trolls. SKOL!!!!!!

Well, we’ve gotten through episode 4 of ‘Quarterback’, and it remains an okay series, in my opinion. It’s worth a watch, but you aren’t going to learn much that you don’t already know. I will say that my opinion of Kirk Cousins is higher than it was already before watching, you can’t deny that the man is a good dude.

Anyone have big plans for the weekend? I think kiddo and I are heading to the Wal-Mart of outdoor events today. That’s right, we’re going to attend the State Fair. At least the rides will be fun, and it’s always fun to visit Minot.

Minnesota Vikings News:

The Vikings have two open roster spots after releasing CB John Reid, according to SI.com.

At Vikings.com, Justin Jefferson came in at number 11 on PFF’s top 50 players.

If you hadn’t heard, Jordan Addison was clocked doing 140 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to CBS Sports. Whoopsie. Honestly, officer, I was just cruising along at 55 mph, and I must’ve let my foot get heavy for a second or two, I really didn’t mean to speed.

From CBS Sports, the NFL owners have unanimously approved the sale of the Washington Commanders. In related news, former Commanders owner Dan Snyder was fined $60 million by the NFL after an internal investigation.

We play 12 games before our bye week this year. With a little good fortune I think we can go 9-3 before the bye.

Laughing… I think the Vikings were the epitome of “on any given Sunday” last year. They can beat top teams (like Buffalo) and lose to the Giants.

I do think the offense will be better this year, as every position has guys who played in this scheme last year. Thus you would think there would be an improvement. By the way, the Vikings were 7th in total offense last year (yards) and 8th in scoring, and I thought they weren’t close to achieving their potential.

5 games over .500 currently.

Five teams in the AL under .500, four in the Central.
Cleveland/Angels could be at .500 by end of today.

“can’t be hard” – unfortunately, I said the same thing going into last year. And then there was all the BS about Donatelli and his sophisticated defense that would fool the crap out of opposing QB’s.
So while I’m hopeful, those guys on the field better start bringing it.

Flores runs a hybrid, he’ll switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 or so I’ve read. I think he naturally wants to keep Hunter but has plans for Davenport, and the 2nd, 3rd year guys and Pace is the best rushing LB we probably have. I think there’s a lot that’s going to change. I think the biggest challenge will be the defense learning their responsibilities.

Read this in an article:

Cousins absorbed an NFL-high 136 hits on passing plays last season due to a combination of inconsistent pass protection and his instinct to remain in the pocket rather than scramble. It was hardly an anomaly. Since he became a full-time starter for Washington in 2015, Cousins has taken 781 hits on such plays, more than any quarterback over that span other than Russell Wilson and Matt Ryan, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.”

Maybe saying same thing differently. I read last week some QB stats about who lead league in 10 plus yards beyond the line of scrimmage. Mahomes was first and Kirk second – by a pretty large margin.
On this site a week or so ago, someone posted a video of a couple of guys who broke every aspect of the team stats down. They’re take was a big play offense.
Similar but different, We have a minus two run, a 5yard sack and them a 20 yard pass for first down. You can move the ball down the field this way and have a lot of plays, but it’s really on the big plays. Not really the 3 down traditional way of moving the sticks.
That’s what i meant And you need time for those 20 yard throws..

And some folks said Cousins has NEVER led the league in hits (basically calling me a liar) when in actuality he led the the league in hits in 2020, was 3rd in 2021, and led the league again in 2022.

Finally back from the ER. 8 hours of total worthlessness. After examining me, sticking an IV in me, taking blood, and having me fill out a long symptoms form, and going over my entire medical history and my family, they said my symptoms appeared to be functional dyspepsia. They are scheduling me for an endoscopy to put a tube and TV camera down my throat. They are looking for bacterium, and will also be collecting a tissue sample. I hate the doctors.

My wife made me some cream of wheat this morning at 6 a.m. that didn’t cause any issues. She’s making me scrambled eggs and toast for dinner. Hopefully no issues with that. We’ll see.

Sorry NVF that’s just a great way to ruin a weekend. Doesn’t sound serious tho as all your other vitals and hopefully blood panel results you’ll get in a few days that show all your values are normal, it’s just a dietary issue. Go on a bland diet for awhile, plain chicken breast, rice, eggs, toast etc…sounds like the Mrs has you lined up correctly. Not abnormal to have required dietary changes as we age. Body can’t digest like a young Billy Goat forever.

Have to admit I had not seen your post below before I got back from the ER and starting posting here again, so yes, you seem to have figured it out. There is no real treatment for it, just taking notes on what I eat that causes it to flare up.

While in general I’m a steak and potatoes guy, I greatly enjoy dining out and trying new dishes with my wife. Might be a taxing venture in the future.

I figured you were already gone before reading it…that’s ok how would you like to take care of your co-pay today? 😂

You can still have the occasional steak…practice moderation and keeping the list will help but realize a lot of these issues come from a cumulative diet not just ate it once and it bothered me. You were probably on a routine of some of the foods that contributed to your issues but if you ate them less frequently you’d be fine.

I agree, from the standpoint none of us are right in the political / religious arena simply because we’re all being manipulated and controlled via the societal necessities we all need to survive. Those that have the power to influence them do so by dividing us with culture, race, religion and economic differences all societies have so they can gain more power and influence and keep the masses in check.

Today I hate golf.
Starting on the 6th tee box, we had to wait 10 + minutes on each hole.
On hole 13 I shanked one into the woods, tried another with the same result, and put my clubs away. Done.

There is no way a round of golf should take 5 hours. I am bad enough without having to wait for the group in front of me, and also have an audience with the group behind us waiting.

We did get annual training/briefings on Mental Health as we were dealing with Inmates with Mental health/addiction/pressures from prison life/etc.
A great variance but often given structure in a (relatively) secure environment some of them do better.

No clue what all Everson issues are but I do suspect that excessive free time/lack of purpose cannot help. My own humble opinion of course.

Rory has the best all around game but usually chokes. Has 30 top ten major finishes. Should have way more victories.

Scheffler I would rag on but he’s relatively new and does have an amazing tee to green game, just putts like me.

Yup…I was pretty confident Harmon would come back to the pack yesterday and he started off that way dropping two shots quick and a few players being within 2 shots. But something flipped his switch and he got a couple breaks to get those shots back and he got confident again and added two more shots to his lead.

I know Sunday, day 4 of intense golf in tough conditions will eventually take it’s toll. That doesn’t even add in the pressure factor knowing it’s a major and you’re close to getting it done just don’t mess up.

I’ll predict again he’ll come back to the pack today… he’s a feel player and this weather will take away the ability to get all there way in to that feel comfortably. I don’t think with all his ticks and aw shucks nobody respects me he’ll get it done today. If he does, hats off to him he’ll earn it.

He’s probably playing safe golf today and likely taking calculated risks. I think he would play that way even if it was sunny and 65. Hard to believe at this point that Harman would blow a 5 stroke lead.

Exactly….thoses are big names but Harmon is a relative nobody on the big stage so getting his first major is a very very different proposition.

That said does the weather help protect his lead more or does it set up to allow him to come back to the pack? Probably has to be the combo of the weather bringing him back 3 or 4 shots say finish -8 or -9 under and then a guy like Rahm or Young shooting -3 under to tie or win by a shot.

Something is seriously wrong with me. For the last 4 days, every time I eat I somewhat immediately get severe cramps and nausea, shortness of breath, and heavy burping. I throw up all my food and I’m in pain for hours afterwards. No blood in the vomit, no fever, no blood in my stool, but I get very, very sick when I eat.

Sounds like functional dyspepsia

(dis-PEP-see-uh) is a term for recurring symptoms of an upset stomach that have no obvious cause. Functional dyspepsia also is called nonulcer dyspepsia.

Functional dyspepsia is common. It is a constant condition but symptoms don’t happen all the time. Symptoms resemble those of an ulcer. They include pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen, bloating, belching and nausea.

Symptoms of functional dyspepsia may include:

  • Pain or burning in the stomach, bloating, excessive belching, or nausea after eating
  • An early feeling of fullness when eating. The feeling of fullness also is called satiety.
  • Stomach pain that occurs unrelated to meals or goes away when eating.

When to see a doctorMake an appointment with your health care provider if you experience persistent symptoms that worry you.
Seek medical attention right away if you experience:

  • Bloody vomit.
  • Dark, tarry stools.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Pain in your jaw, neck or arm.
  • Unexplained weight loss.

CausesNo one knows what causes functional dyspepsia. Health care providers consider it a functional disorder. That means it can’t be explained by a medical condition, so routine testing may not show any problems or causes. As a result, the diagnosis is based on symptoms.

New clubs arrived and are working out pretty well. (5, 6 and 7 Iron)

94 today. Fairways hit 13 of 14. Putts 36. two Pars, once Birdie, 3 penalty strokes when I decided to hit balls into the water. Most offensive score was an 8.

Question for Lifer or anyone that may have the secret decoder ring for Ping clubs.
My callaways are -2 lie and a half inch longer on the shaft.

What does that translate to for Ping G430s?

Asking since I may complete the Iron purchase with those. I liked them the best. Pro shop at my local course is a ping shop and he will give me a good enough deal.

Lifer as a fitter will know better but when I heard your measurements last week something seemed off a little to me. My 2 cents I play Ping blue dot plus 1/4 inch.
What was strange was i/2 long but 2 degrees flat. As I understand fitting, these two numbers negate each other. Meaning you could play a standard length at o lie adjustment and be same to ground or have a club that plays the same.
In general, the longer you make the club, the more upright it plays and vice versa
Your Pro can probable explain this a lot better than I can. General rule, if you add 1/4 inch, same as the club plays 1degree more upright. Cut a 1/4 off and it plays 1 degree flatter
Hope this doesn’t mess things up for you. As an aside, the G430’s are great clubs.

Pings 7 iron standard lie is 62…Callaway 7 standard is 62.5. So you have a 1/2 degree adjustment from one to the other. On a ping g430 you would need a 60.5 to match what you have now with the Callaway. Still you can do the 1/2” longer and it would be the same.

JR- Correct, orange is -2 flat and you’re also correct for every 1/2 inch you go longer you increase the lie up 1 degree. So in reality he’s hitting red -1 degree but a 1/2 “ longer so it’s unique in that aspect.

In reality whatever is comfortable in your hands length wise for a 7 iron then what has you hitting the lie board tape as near to the center of the tape as possible.

I would expect 1/2” longer feels more comfortable to you than standard. I play 1/2” longer and I’m 6’1”. Just feels more on plane for me.

As I recall your pro suggested the Pings. I’m sure he can provide good direction.

Yup…I’m to the point I know what the correction is. I’ve been pulling my irons lately simply because my swing has shifted to an inside out and I really really have to focus on staying down on it and taking the club head out and down the line. I use to have a fade on everything that has changed and I’ve added 5-10 yrds per iron from it being a left draw spin instead of a right fade spin. I’ll figure it out but good thing my face contact is flush center I can feel the ball compressing on my titleist blades. Nothing feels better but they can get away from you if you don’t complete the swing.

Yeah I can create a fade or draw on command at the range but you’re on course it’s different lies and shot angles and you may not do a lot of one or the other.

Tried my new TriHot putter and was way more in control of my putting. I had I think two bad lags I left short but for the most part was burning edges and making some with a new putter. Hope to get better with it, missed 3 or 4 three footers I should have made. Make half those and eliminate the triples I shoot 83.

For those of you conservatives, there are several neat opinion pieces in today’s WSJ.
One is particularly interesting as it illustrates what happens when government gets involved in activities with little experience.
It seems when Biden declared student loan relief from payments for borrowers, a strange thing happened. The borrowers actually went out and took on even more debt. So now they have the student loan as well as the new debt to deal with.

No longer New Vikings Fan

Does anyone realize that the Biden administration is pulling a fast one here? Student loans in the U.S. are generally either owned by the federal government or financial institutions. That said, the federal government fully guarantees almost all student loans. That means if the loans are not paid back, the Federal Government has to settle the debt. So the Biden administration isn’t just erasing the debt the students owe, it’s erasing its own obligation to the institutions that provided the funds in the first place. Sorry, so sad, too bad, the Federal Government is welching on the deal folks. We ain’t paying you back, so eat it.

Oh, BTW, student loans debt is increasing significantly, with total U.S. student loan debt reaching more than $1.7 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to Federal Reserve data. A majority of that debt is owned by the federal government.

No, because without that, the Vikings can cut him with little to no fiscal impacts. In other words to make room for other contracts, they could let Cousins go at any time, and that leaves him in a bad position. Cousins isn’t stupid. He knows for the most part in the league, contracts are only set up for the teams to “own” players. The team can do whatever they want with the players they own. Cousins hasn’t ever let a team own him, not even Bruce Allen with the Redskins. He’s a rare commodity in the NFL these days.

Two years guaranteed and the third is wishy washer – not sure what the correct term is for the third.

Cousins will want guaranteed money in all three years, especially if he has a great year again this year.

We’ve still got out six pack bet – cheap beer though (no milk money).
I’m not a cap guy like you guys or have knowledge about contract construction, but feel this will get worked out.

Ha A week or so back you indicated you were rewarching the games and I had mentioned some tackling issues – specifically Smith. Did you notice anything in this regard?

I did. He missed a lot of tackles in the Giants game as you highlighted. He wasn’t always in the greatest positions though. I think at times he tries to do too much, covering for other guys.

Likey. Cousins won’t be reasonable in order to “retire a Viking”

Cousins has been reasonable his whole career, repeatedly offering teams deals at below market value to remain with them.

Think if he was staying he would have extended into 2024, 2025. Doubt he stays.

He tried to extend into 2025. KAM rejected the deal. So yes, he’s gone after 2023.
