Man, the one thing you hate to see this time of year is injuries, and there were a couple of major injuries yesterday. Jalen Ramsey suffered a knee injury, and Joe Burrow was carted off the field with a lower leg injury. Burrow’s injury was a non-contact injury, and it appears to be a calf injury, but there haven’t been any details as of yet. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.

From NFL.com, Jalen Ramsey is out with a knee injury and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, Bengals QB Joe Burrow was carted off the field with a lower leg injury during training camp yesterday, and they listed numbers 61-70 of the NFL top 100 list.

Been enjoying having NFL Network back, and watching the camp coverage. Enjoyed the segment with KOC mic-ed up. I know it’s coach speak and camp talk, but had a crazy year and don’t know him like you all.
SIL and daughter came over last night, and finally got some pictures hung. My poor SIL with 3 women (including sister) debating where to put what. At one point, when all 3 women agreed on something, SIL said “that’s what I suggested an hour ago”. It was true, lol.
2 well learned words in this situation. “Yes, ma’am.”
Haha! 3 women is a bit challenging. He was very patient, only spoke up for himself a time or two. What should have taken an hour and half took all night. He actually has better spatial perception than any of us, and we all knew that.

My son coached the 14 year travel team this summer…sometimes some of the good players wouldn’t hustle out a routine ground ball or an infield pop fly. I wanted to him to give them the T.K. speech about Kirby Puckett….
And I paraphrase….
“It makes my job a lot easier when the best player on your team is hustling out a 3 hopper to 2nd base in a spring training game in the rain” If Kirby can run hard on every ball in play…certainly any of you 14 year olds can….
But it would be pointless since none of them know who Kirby Puckett was….

Hunters new deal makes him the 5th best paid outside linebacker in the league. Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, T.J. Watt, and Bradley Chubb are ahead of him, in that order.

To me, talent (level) is as only good as it does on the field, He needs to start bringing it, and that means every play he is in there.
And if we are going to put him in the OLB category, he looks just plain lost in space.

I purposely put him in that category because that’s his position listing. He should be a DE. That’s what he is, and that’s what he’s good at. OL is bad fit for him.

Meh, its a one season deal. He’s gone after this season regardless and depending on record might be a trade deadline victim. I think the signing was more a courtesy for Flores and his D than anything else. We want to see how this defense operates with at least one legit DE. #TankForTheFuture
Hey Lifer, I shot a GD 100 yesterday….same problems as you. I hit my driver well but hit 0 greens in regulation….the only 2 clubs in my bag that were worth a shit were my Driver and my Pitching wedge, I had nothing going on from 110 on out. Hit about half the fairways at around 230 to 235….but couldn’t do shit from there.
Oh well, hope springs eternal in the heart of a Vikings fan, going out again this afternoon and expecting a better outcome with the same swing.
I hear ya buddy…it is as JR has been telling me it’s about when you’re in scoring position, 150 in that you should hope for 50% with your 7 or 8 iron being on the putting surface and with a wedge in your hand say 135 in you should hope to get on the green 70% of the time. I missed them all but one yesterday. Then it comes to chipping around the green and really try to get up and down no worse than a two putt but half the time chip close enough to putt in. If on the green from an approach shot no no no no no no 3 putts. I did it all day yesterday, 3 putted, missed two and a half footers, lag putted to outside comfortable two put range just every single in scoring position mistake you could make. Almost like I was trying to not score that is what I did. Sickening.
I’m going to the range this week and working on all of that. I’m pissed.
I tried to play again today. Should have logged into work instead.

She shot a 95, and missed several 4 ft par puts.
I am thinking maybe I take up hiking instead. At least I can walk without falling down (usually)
It’s an arbitrary game Surly with so many variables at play creating the outcome. Don’t beat yourself up. We think we’re in control but in reality the chances are slim we create the desired outcome we wish. I’ve been giving this a lot of thought today.
Somewhere in the game of golf is the essence and balance between failure and success, both equally important to experience or the game itself would be meaningless. Embrace the failures and marvel in the successes, there we can find the outcome we desire.

According to Tom Pelissero, Hunter received a raise paying him $20 million in 2023 with $17 million guaranteed. He was scheduled to have a salary of only $5.5 million. With those numbers, our $18M in cap space may be reduced by $14.5 with Hunters new contract to $3.5M.

Just for the record, two thumbs up on the dinner cruise last night. Started with some safety briefings (of course) over drinks. All the tables in the dining area were positioned along the big windows on either side of the ship, so everyone had a view. Dinner selections were a little limited, but tasty. Several nice appetizers, salads, and desserts. We enjoyed our meals and the girls were drinking martini’s of various types.
After dinner it was up to the 3rd deck for more dinks and dancing. We had a ton of fun. The cruise time of two and a half hours went by pretty quickly, as we were laughing and having fun with other guests. We are going to do it again on our anniversary.
Great – glad you had a grand time. Seems you stomach held up which is also a plus.
It did, but I ate a very light meal. I had mashed potatoes with some grilled Grouper. I didn’t drink anything but water either. Hopefully next time I can really enjoy everything.
Was going to add about our meal last night. My wife is still not completely up to snuff, so didn’t feel like cooking. So I ask, what do you want. and out of no where she says I’ve got an itch for a Big Mac.
So we had Big Macs and fries and I had a couple of beers.
Not as sexy as your meal, but not bad. I’ve always been a sucker for junk food.

My wife and I do a burger and fries cheat night at least once a month. I grill the angus top sirloin burgers myself and have gourmet cheese, pickles, onions and toast the buns. Really can’t get a better burger than that. Fries are real Idaho potato crinkle fries baked in the oven. Those are not good for you but are the real cheat of the meal and delicious to dip in ketchup.
The meal you described we do about every 7 – 10 days. Agree, it is really good.
Last night, we just went particularly bad, health wise.

I think that’s so great JR. I’m a BLT guy. Every once in a while it’s a Five Guys night and we eat BLT’s because they put a lot of damn bacon on them. I actually haven’t had a Big Mac in a very long time. Now I got a hankerin, but I’m still on a bland diet.
I love BLT’s too – most things that probably aren”t good for you, I’m usually all in on.
I don’t know about where you are, but we can’t buy or find good tomatoes around here in Florida. So, the BLT’s are just not quite a good as we could get in VA. Still eat them though. Most stuff with bacon in it is usually pretty good.
We live near Tarpon Springs and New Port Richey. I agree the tomatoes aren’t as good as up North for some reason.
Have to grow your own. Easy to do in pots on your deck and will produce more than you need. We get some good heirloom tomato starters or seeds along with some cherry tomato plants for salads.
I think we were talking restaurant tomatoes, but yes, home grown in potable soil are always going to be very good.
For sure restaurant tomatoes are cheap large AG crap unless you’re eating at a farm to table establishment.
We grow our own tomatoes and lettuce in make-shift garden boxes, but bacon from the Hutterites….Excellent BLTs just had some yesterday.
I asked The Teacher on Mothers Day what she wanted for dinner. After some inner debate she decided on Carls Jr.
I said ‘really?’. I knew she wasn’t up to going to fight the crowds to a sit down restaurant but there are nicer places for pick up or I could prepare one of her favs. She said she had been craving a decent burger and that is what she wanted.
Felt guilty/lucky that she didn’t want a big production out of it.
You know, a really good burger is never a bad choice.
Was fine with the choice of burger, just surprised at the ease and cost of a ‘holiday meal’.
The Carls Jr is about a mile from here, there are several High End burger joints within 10-20 miles of here one less than 5m.

Nah not really….keeping Hunter for another year is probably a smart move and keeping the books clear in 24 with all the big deals on the horizon for Kirk, JJ, Hock and eventually Darrisaw. All but Kirk could set the market with the new deals they will get in 2024. Yes I said will get in 2024.

OK, that’s good news. How much cap space is left now?
Let me do some digging on how the deal is structured.
So from what I gather, Hunter was scheduled pre deal to make $4.9 in 2023. Now he is set to make $17 mill guaranteed so a $12 mill raise. That should leave about $6 mill in cap space down from $18. Also should be noted that Hunter and the Vikings agreed to a no tag in 24 clause so this will not be a kick the can issue next year with the no tag being added. Either the Vikings sign him to a LTD or he hits the open market which is the most likely outcome.
I’m a little worried about this contract. Hunter could fake an injury, sit out all year, and still get paid. Or he could really get injured and the Vikings would be paying him this $18M.
I might have made it more incentive laden. You play, you perform well, you get more money.
I think as the relationship between Hunter and the Vikings comes to and end, which it is, he and his agent were adamant that in order to play this year it was either pay X amount on a 1 yr deal with a no trade clause or a multi year deal. I think he was prepared to sit and I think Hunter is needed on this defense and they and the Vikings know it.
It was probably the best choice of the two options imo. Play this year even if he gets hurt you’re cap clean in 24. There really wasn’t a better option in FA and Hunter gives you at least some semblance of a threat on the edge. Davenport more than anyone needs that.

Doesn’t matter who it’s against. What matters is making an instinctive flash play on defense, gaining confidence and seeing the play and reacting. That is what training camp is for.
It wasn’t an instinctive flash play. Flores had the corner and safety switch coverage at the snap. Corner ran to Cines spot and vice versa. Gave the QB the illusion that the receiver was wide open. Good scheme, but dangerous if the QB sees the switch and then puts some air under the ball and a little farther downfield.
Instinctive from the sense he knows what he has to do and instinctively executes it to perfection. Still have to have the instincts of how to time it up but yes…as I said above it’s a gamble.
Good thing the receiver was running a little hitch. In, out, or and up and their giving up big yards.
I’m REALLY looking forward to watching the Flores system.

Golf was more fun today. Still bailed after 16 holes since the pace is brutal when the course is completely full. New Irons still throwing me a bit. I ended up overshooting three greens since I have not played enough to get distance dialed in. But man, the new clubs hit so much better than the old clubs.

In the larger scheme of things yes if the Vikings defense could allow around 17 points total Kirk wins quite a few more regular season games but against the elite NFC, Eagles, Niners, it’s likely the same outcome “L”.
Since those teams have the dominate balance to hang 30 on you and hold you to 14.
Our defense would need to be top 5 and that jack, ain’t happening.
Get your point but didn’t think that was the thrust of the article, at least the last two items. If one QB’s team gives up 18 ppg, and the other’s gives up 28 ppg, that’s a hell of an advantage with respect to w/l regardless of who the Qb’s are. .
For sure but that’s saying the same thing, good defense doesn’t necessarily make a better QB but it sure as hell changes the narrative. If I was Kirk I’d be saying, screw this put me on a contender. I think he’s settled now and doesn’t want to uproot his family if at all possible.
My guess Kwesi backs down and gives him a nice 2 year deal with half of the third year thrown in after the epic year Kirk has. He’ll panic. Kirk plays well enough he could even earn that 3 year guaranteed deal next offseason. I wouldn’t hate it at all at $40 mill a yr guaranteed.
If our offense puts up really big numbers, and a lot of nation pundits think they will, Kwesi will be in quite a spot.

I think its the play offs, you get the ball to your play makers and take risks. Thats how you get to the big dance. Thats going to involve turn overs. Joe Burrow doesnt have the 4th and 8 play. Thats what I think.

Sources tell VikingsTerritory that Z Smith wanted 2022 Vikings defensive coordinator Ed Donatell fired during the season, but the team obviously didn’t oblige.
Donatell was fired four days after Minnesota’s disappointing playoff loss to the New York Giants.
Apparently ignoring Smith altogether set the tone for his 2023 offseason, and he later tweeted his way out of Minnesota in March.
If this is true, I’m glad smith is gone.

I think there is a there there on this report. The fact remains a deal has not gotten done. Hunter is at camp simply because he doesn’t want to be fined. Kwesi has shown the propensity to not meet a players/agents demands so I think they’re likely trying to move him. Problem is they’re not getting a 1st for him (Bears were a rumor and would be a great fit and they have two 1st’s (one from the Panthers) but Hunter is not fetching that kind of trade compensation. So might not be a good deal out there to be had and GM’s know Vikings really don’t want to pay him what he is asking for. Tough spot I do not see this resolving anytime soon.

What a morning on the links…this fucking game. So played with my wife and two guys, one i know well the other did not know. Either guy are meh, one guy my friend i play with semi often, the other he was a young lefty hack artist but ok, just slow. I’m a better golfer that either of them.
My driver was on today, 250+ never missed a fairway or lost a ball all day off the tee. It was amazing. Problem today I could not hit a green from 150 in or score to save my life. Pulled everything, hit perfectly placed tee shots in the middle of the fairway, 2nd shot OB a few times or would come up short in a bunker or off the edge in the rough. Never on the green.
Hit one green in regulation all day, made birdie with a nice putt that was it.
Putted like complete dogshit the rest of the round with the new TriHot odyssey I was given. Great putter it’s me just had zero feel all day. Chipping was meh never left myself many up and down chances. Had one triple, one birdie, a few bogies and all the rest doubles. I doubled everything all day long simply from the approach and putting. Was awful. My buddy who I was at least 6 shots ahead early on ended up shooting a 98, the lefty shot a 100 and I shot a 101 worst of the bunch. They actually gave themselves some mulligans i never do or did but still just a complete shit round and fucking demoralizing. I should beat them by 15 strokes. Can’t do it if you can’t score from 150 in and I did that on one out of 18 holes, the rest cost myself 3-4 shots from there on every hole. Fuck me.
Remember…Golf is fun! Take a few deep breaths and enjoy the fact you are out in nature.
Sucks though when the drives on and you can’t hit the greens…250+ driver for an old guy like you is legit. My good drives are around 240 these days….I have been pretty much on with the Driver and dogshit from 150 in all year – just like your round today.
I hit a 280 yard drive today with no downhill roll aid just straight out 250 carry with a 30 yard roll out. Did hit my 150 approach to the front edge about 3 feet from the green, chipped 10 feet past, two putted. That kind of day. Missed so many up and downs but had zero confidence putting today. New putter to be expected.
280 was what I hit in my prime….you are aging well…

Yesterday folks here were talking about plateaus and getting stuck in 85 – 95 range. Truth is “learning to score” is an acquired skill. Throwing fastballs and sliders in practice is far different than getting on the rubber and actually “pitching” a game. Scoring in golf is much the same. You can hit balls great, putt great on the putting green and still get on the course and score like crap. A 10 foot put on the putting green means nothing.
As we discussed before, bogey is your friend. Most people can’t get to 150 from the green so they have another problem (which is fixable but not for today). So, from 150 hit it to safe area on or around the green. Learning to score, is from that point forward.
I’m going to the range during the coming week. Going to work on irons from 160 in and fix this pull issue I have. I have gradually changed my swing to a inside out draw and the contact on these blades is just pure sounding nice beautiful high shots, just pulling it every time. I’ve figured out the first part of the draw swing now I have to work on the finish. If I really really concentrate I can do it but that’s not a natural free swing. I need my regular swing to not always be a pull high draw just a nice high right to left draw that finishes straight. I hit some fantastic pure iron shots today just nothing in a place to score.

I know but he knew how to finish it I don’t. We discussed this before, I know how but it’s not an issue with knowing how too, it’s an issue of making it part of your normal swing from start to finish.
When you have to concentrate so hard to get the finish you want it really takes away from having a consistent swing tempo and motion. You can’t try that hard at a golf swing it needs to be more loose and natural and that comes from practicing it enough you just feel it and don’t have to think about it. If that makes sense.
I get that. Need a swing that you don’t think about too much.

Lifer If you’re hitting your drives 250 in the fairway, your swing is good enough right now. little story how I became a better golfer.
I struggled like everybody. Since I had hit half a million baseballs. I could hit a ball, but every shot was a pull. So I worked years correcting it, hitting from the inside and all of that. Problem, after 10 years I was never comfortable. I sort of learned to modify my swing and sort of block the ball straight. Could shoot 81 -83 all day long.
Went to a business conference and signed up for a free golf clinic – 7 guys, 3 hours with a teacher named Jim Flick. He took one look at my swing and said why are you doing that? I said to hit it straight. So, he simply said – why don’t you just hit a pull on every shot. That’s what’s natural to you, who cares about the perfect swing. Within 10 days I was now in mid 70’s. I play a pull on every shot. Drive – aim at the 150 bush on right side of fairway and hit my shot. 7 iron, 12 feet right of flag. PW – about 5 feet.
So, if you naturally hit a pull draw, why not simply play that shot. You can play all day with that shot, and if it’s what you do naturally, you don’t have to worry where the ball is going under pressure. Forget chasing the perfect swing.
That is exactly where I’m at. I have to block out to the right to get it to go straight. Doesn’t feel natural, feels forced and that just isn’t a comfortable feeling. I’ll try that on the range this coming week with my irons and see if I can gain some consistency with it. Problem a few times today it started leaking in to my 3 wood as well pulled a few of those today and that is a club I always hit straight. Thanks for the tip!

But everyone has their own natural swing and that swing has natural tendonciies – push pull fade or draw. You don’t have a wild hook or slice. Just play, and practice, with what’s natural for you.

Let me tell you a too long story about my car woes….
I am not a car guy – never changed a spark plug belt in my life.
Took my car to the dealership in Bismarck Mandan (100 miles away) cause it needed brake work and some suspension work (had 125,000) on it. They fixed that stuff just fine. But then they said you really should have an engine tune up if you plan on keeping it for a while yet. It was running fine but I agreed to the full engine tune up deal.
I get it back and it doesn’t really feel or sound great – feels like its not always firing on all four cylinders. I take it on an out of town trip, 90 miles out all the engine lights come on and it starts shaking like a French whore with Parkinsons, I call triple A and get it towed back to the dealer. I tell them I just had the engine tune up done and you guys obviously messed something up.
They call me back and say “the throttle body was sticky” and one of your wheels was out of balance. I was skeptical, since it felt a whole lot worse than a sticky throttle body (whatever the hell that is) and an out of balance wheel. But they said they took it for a test drive and it was fine – and since it was not related to the Tune Up that will be another 350 dollars please.
So Friday I have a a buddy pick it up, he gets about 40 miles out of town and the exact same thing happens…he limps back to Minot with it and I call the dealer and tell them to tow it back and fix it right. They do come and get it. Again, this car had no engine issues until they talked be into the tune up.
Waiting to hear back.
Well it’s been 35 years or more since I worked on my car, but back in the day, first things I would check was fuel, spark, and timing, followed by vacuum. Cars are very different these days though with the computers involved. If you have a check engine light Auto Zone can check the fault code and advise what’s wrong.
You got hosed. They screwed something up. I would get a list of everything they did on the first engine tune up to assess what they F’up. I would also say I want my money back from the first tune up you did as twice now you’ve been left stranded and for the $350 throttle body that’s part of the fucking engine how was that missed on the first tune up? I don’t know how much you’ve sunk in to this but I would not pay a penny more and would tell them you want that money back or you’re hiring a lawyer and calling the better business bureau. They’re not a reputable repair shop clearly.

Similar story for me awhile back. Spent $700 to do all the suggested service before I knew service writers work on commission. Also, they make more than most car salespeople, since they can “sell safety” by lying to you about what your car needs.
anyways, a $16 fuel filter was the culprit. Only thing wrong, and the only thing they did not fix it.

Was reading your comments from late yesterday about our running the ball. the eyeball test said we weren’t that good, but those stats are really poor. You know the coaching staff is all over those numbers and set on improvement there. Gotta believe we’re going to see a fair amount of heavy packages – more of a blend of McVay with a strong dose of Shanahan. JJ can still get a lot of balls with this set up though.
Also think how well the WR2 position develops will be a factor.

The running game needs to be able to pick up 3rd and short. They need to be able to pound it in at the goal line. They need to able to pick up some chunk yards too occasionally. The other team needs to know our running game can beat them.
That’s it. We don’t really need balance, but be able to run “well enough” that the defense will respect our run game.
When we can’t run on third and short against a light box, and can’t convert it, we’ve got a problem.

Last year the Vikings offense was 8th best in the league in scoring. They scored 424 points, or 24.9 points a game. Our kicker missed 6 extra points though. If he had made those, our points total goes up to 430 points or 25.3 points a game. I think to win 13 games again this season though, that point total will have to be closer to 470 points or 27.6 points a game. If we added one more field goal every game that would give us 51 more points or 475 total for the year, an average of 27.9 points a game.
I think this offense can do that.

Well, they sucked bad last year (both Guards at the very bottom of the league in pass protection) and we were 8th best in the league in scoring, and 7th best in yards per game. Need to shore it up though.

The Vikings kept Ham this year after utilizing him very little last year. Then they brought in TE Josh Oliver from Baltimore, ostensibly for his blocking skills. Looks to me like KOC and Wes are planning on having the ability to have more heavy guys on the field when needed, which can obviously benefit the running offense.
The Vikings had a bad rushing attack in many different metrics last year. While the passing offense was top 10 in many categories, the run game ranked in the bottom tier in most metrics. It ranked 28th in DVOA, 29th in EPA/Play, 27th in yards, 25th in yards per attempt, and 27th in getting first downs by a run.
Oliver and Ham are fantastic run blockers who can open up holes for Alexander Mattison, Ty Chandler, Kene Nwangwu, and DeWayne McBride. Ham has also proven to be an asset in the passing game over the years. He is a target with reliable hands, and oh by the way, Oliver is too. Hmmm… I think Ham is looking at increased opportunities in 2023 in an offense that just might be a lot more versatile.
You know, like our defense with their new legion of boom.
So we are going to have the ‘offense of boom’?
The only thing I worry about is the interior O-line. If they actually get their act together, then yeah, this can be a very, very potent offense.
Or you know KAM could call plays that minimize our weakness and showcase our strengths, like call quick slants and outs rather than long developing routes that force Kirk to wait until receivers come open to throw the ball.
I think that’s a salient point. Cousins was hit a whopping 131 more times than any other QB in the league last year. That’s on KOC in play design and play calling. Total bullshit there. Total crap. One would hope he effing learned something from that.
Probably learned that Kirk was like a Timex, ‘takes a licking and keeps on ticking’ so no need to make any changes.
