Man, a buddy of mine and I met in Jamestown to watch Strays on Saturday. I’ll tell you what, that is one of the funniest shows I’ve watched in a long time. If you don’t like cursing, you will NOT like this show. If you don’t mind hearing dogs curse and you have a sense of humor, then you should definitely go watch it. We laughed our a**es off. I’m probably going to go again while it’s in the theaters.

Minnesota Vikings Discussion Topic of the Day

After watching the final preseason game, we’ve seen all we’re going to see as fans. So, discuss one bubble player who you think the coaches should find a way to keep. I’m going to go with Jay Ward. To me, that kid showed that he needs to be on an NFL roster.

Minnesota Vikings News:

TwinCities.com looks at Jay Ward’s standout performance on Saturday.

The Pioneer Press tells us which Vikings players are up and which are down as final roster cuts loom.

At Vikings.com, they go over Jaren Hall’s final performance, and the team wrapped up the preseason.

The Rams got curbstomped over the weekend, it was the worst preseason loss in the NFL in the past 20+ years.

CBS Sports highlights winners and losers from around the league after preseason week 3.

Video of the Day:

Here’s a trailer for the movie Strays. CAUTION: NSFW LANGUAGE!

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Cousin currently has eight 400 yard passing games to his name. That’s tied for 12th all time.

I’m hoping he adds a few to that total this year, but it looks to me like KOC is going to be more committed to running the ball in his second season.

Amazing arm talent.

I agree it seems like a more run oriented focus this year but you know how best laid plans go….

According to OTC, it’s 9.2% for 2023. The problem is that the Vikings have the 8th highest dead cap in 2023, more than 2/3 of which is due to Thielen, Cook and Kendricks contracts that were signed by Rick. That significantly limits the amount they can spend on other players this season.

Not to mention the only reason his 2023 cap hit is lower is because they added void years that will increase dead cap for the next 4 seasons if they don’t reach an extension agreement with Kirk.

Right now it looks like the Vikings have released 21 players of the 91 they had on their roster (they had an international developmental guy or whatever on the roster to make it 91).

Thus they’re down to 70 guys. 17 cuts remain, but they could cut more, and bring in guys being released from other teams. We will be pretty clear by 4 p.m. EDT tomorrow.

Hey Rob, we’re sheltering in-place here in Trinity. Little township near Tarpon Springs and New Port Richey, about 35 miles Northwest of Tampa.

We’re pretty much set, with plenty of non-perishable food, bottled water, multiple back-up battery packs for the phones, over 300 batteries of various sizes stock piled, a large cooler with frozen ice packs, both vehicles gassed, cash on-hand, guns loaded, kitty food and litter, and plenty of charcoal and lighter fluid for the barbie. We also have battery operated lights and fans.

Meh. The Rams and Bucs have both won a Super Bowl since the last time BB did. If the Vikings went all in like LA and Tampa, and had a Lombardi to show for it, I could live with a few bad seasons. Instead, Rick went sort of all in on guys that were never elite, and here we are. We’ve been consistently OK for 10 years and running.

Brady doesn’t win anything without a great defense every year for 20 years, a great O-line every year, a great running game, and one of the greatest TE’s in the history of the game either. Also some of the greatest possession receivers ever, BTW. Only had three OC’s in his 20 years with the Patriots as well, including the same guy his last eight years there. Yes Brady is a GREAT NFL QB. Absolutely, hands down. But his defense and his kicker won a shit ton of games for him.

For 3 or 4 of the last 5 seasons, Cousins has been paid like a top 5 QB, which he’s not and never has been. NVF likes to point to this season, where Kirk’s % of cap is deflated but the reality is, Kirk’s market is NOT the same thing as the elite QB market.

The Kirk experience summary is that we overpaid for what we got during a time where it constrained the Vikings ability to surround him with what he needed. This season is the first time in his Viking’s career where his cap hit is close to his value, but Rick left the team with too many aging vet cap hits on the books for the Vikings to leverage it.

Kirk says he wants to retire a Viking but his actions don’t support his words. I’m not a hater or a crusader. I do believe the Vikings could win a SB with Kirk. But only if he’s willing to do a deal at 10-12% of the cap. That’s “his market” IMO, if he’s being honest with himself. Teams don’t play for QB stats, they play to win.

NVF has his head so far up Kirk’s stat butt, he doesn’t understand this. Fact: Kirk Cousins is 35 years old and has 1 playoff win. At this point, that’s the only stat that matters to me.

This is correct. It was man, and the receiver does not sit down in man. He continues the stick route to the outside. This is where KOC’s scheme makes it hard on QB’s though. Last year in the Colts game, Reagor mis-executed his route TWICE, resulting in interceptions (one of them a pick six). New receivers and QB’s in this scheme are going to get it wrong at times, and even in this second year, I expect to see more of this kind of mistake. It’s the reason I don’t feel good about the scheme. Executed correctly, it’s hard to stop. BUT, the QB is never quite sure what the receiver is going to do, so he hesitates, and as we all know, he who hesitates is lost. The ball has to come out on time, and in this scheme, that can result in huge mistakes.

Big Stupid Face

This is really not unique to KOC though. This is pretty common even in college schemes.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  Big Stupid Face

No, it’s not unique, but I think what you’re referring to are option routes where the receiver chooses to go inside or outside, because those are more prevalent in college. In the NFL where coverages are heavily disguised pre-snap, asking receivers to read defenses and adjust their routes, like in this play, is another level.

JRobert
JRobert

You’re probably right. But if it’s man, because the defender has outside leverage and the center defender left, seems if the receivers has an option it would be to break in.
Sort of looks like the QB threw high and wide just at cut anyway. Hard to say.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  JRobert
28 August 2023 3:57 pm

The QB threw the ball exactly where he should have. The receiver has the responsibility to determine if it’s man or zone and either sit in the hole for zone, or run the route to the sideline if it’s man. Outside leverage isn’t part of the equation in the play call here.

JRobert

That being the case this play makes no sense, The QB had zero pressure, Why throw a 4 yard out so quickly with a defender playing outside coverage on the receiver? You’re lucky if there is just a big collision when the ball gets arrives.
Just makes no sense to me to run a receiver into coverage with a throw. A million years ago we tried to do the opposite, use the throw to run the receiver away from the defender.
Guess times change.

First, you need to understand the fundamentals of progressions. In the video clip the commentator correctly stated the QB was reading the right side of the field with three routes in order, 1, 2, and 3. He noted he could have read the left side of the field, 1, 2, and 3, as well. Why did he (correctly) choose to work the right side of the field?

When a QB breaks the huddle and comes to the line, he has a lot of things to work out. How much time is on the clock, are we lined up right for the play called, etc. But when he starts deciphering the defense, his first read is the safeties. He’s looking to see if they are in cover zero, 1, 2, or 3. Then he looks for the linebacker alignment and identifies the middle linebacker or the “Mike”. In this case, the defense is in cover 1 robber. Thus the reads are to the side of the field opposite of where the safety is lined up, or the right side in this case. This is a very standard NFL read progression.

OK, from there the QB reads the outside receiver first who is in man. Unfortunately that guy is completely blanketed and it doesn’t look good. The next progression is the stick route. OK, that looks good. The receiver is open and moving into the open area of the field for a minimum of a 6 yard gain, and maybe a lot more. You don’t say, “well let’s see what everyone else is doing” at that point. You’re in rhythm, the play is there, and you deliver the ball.

The QB did what he was trained to do.

AZ will eat most of the guaranteed money and the rest is “normal” for a qb salary.

Yowza. I pulled it up and I don’t see how anybody is going to trade for him. He has cap hits of $46, $39.8, $49.7, and $43.5 million from 2024-2027. The $18mil 2025 base salary guarantees 5th day of the 2024 league year (wonder where they got that stupid ass idea from?). $22.85 mill of the 2026 salary guarantees in 2025 and same story with $19.5 of the 2027 salary.

Correct.
Murray can just play Kirk hardball and screw the Cards. Assuming they draft Williams, they will likely just cut Murray if he says no, and have a QB on their rookie deal. And Murray can just do his PS5 getting paid millions.

Wonder what the back story was there?

A.J. Peirzinsky had the best line ever from a catcher to an ump.

After the ump gave him a new ball to throw to the pitcher.
“Great, maybe you can see this one”.

KFEY93
Reply to  NoDakRube

I think this happened early this year or end of last year? Basically it looks like it was done on purpose but it wasnt. The catcher thought the ball was in the glove and moved it to grab it at the exact time he dropped it. Ump thought he did it on purpose when really he had no idea what happened. Thats why he looks SO confused when he turned around. Jomboy did a break down on it.

A friend of mine got seats just a couple of rows behind home plate at Target Field. The pitch was a curveball that crossed the plate as a strike, Ump called ball. My friend yelled “blue, you don’t have to hit it, you just have to call it.” The umpire flinched, and went about the game.

In between innings he came over to the wall, with his back to the crowd and said “That’s a good one, I’ve never heard that one before.”

The NFL loves any opportunity to market the league. They need to consider creating an event around cutdown week to garner even more attention and fan interest:

Day 1: Super Scrub Monday. The day when the guys that have no chance of being re-signed this week hit the waiver wire. They were only on teams to provide warm blooded bodies during camp/preseason. We will likely never hear any of their names ever again, until next offseason.

Day 2: Scrub Tuesday. The day the 4PM deadline looms large when teams waive guys they think are scrubs, or look enough like scrubs to get them onto their PS. This is a more interesting group than the Super Scrubs, because…

Day 3: Maybe Not a Scrub Wednesday. The day of reckoning when the NFL separates the wheat (Maybe Not a Scrub) from the chaff (Scrubs), as Maybe Nots are either signed off waivers or end up on a team’s practice squad, or they walk the walk of shame as Scrubs.

That is correct and for the layman that’s no big deal but for those who understand the climate and the effects of temps increasing by 1.7 degrees Fahrenheit it’s alarming because it’s a compounding effect that speeds up and it has done exactly that. The temperature is projected to warm by another 1.5 centigrade, 2.7 degrees F in the next 25 yrs and then 3.6 to 7.2 degrees F, 2-4 cent buy 2100. That means then end of our lifestyles as we know it. Food production moves inside and the climate may not allow humanity to live in many places.

Golf update…shot a 79 yesterday!!

O.k. my wife and I did a 2-person scramble, and we parred at least 3 holes where we only used her shots. My son shot an 82 from the tips, so we kicked his ass.

I hear you…the other thing about having her as a partner is her logic in which shot to take is sometimes lacking…however she stripes her driver 170 down the middle from the women’s tees fairly consistently…that is a huge advantage.

Think Hall stays on 53. Horrible decision bc he easily makes it to PS but KOC kinda raved about him in the post-game pressor Saturday.

KAM/KOC in love with the loser 5th round QB that’s lucky to maybe be a backup one day

LOL raved about him, he was under 60% comp, threw for like 180, 1 int, TD against all scrubs. He wasn’t horrible but not exactly impressive either, I would think they could sneak him onto the practice squad but if they keep him on roster they must love him.

MT is out for good, deleted the app. Keepers are a green light which was my main point of contention but I’ve learned to live with it and picked my keeper (Greg Joseph) Snake or Auction has not been decided but I would think Auction would make more sense with keepers but maybe not since the 11 top guys are off the board.

Welp, had my first of potentially 5 fantasy drafts on Saturday. Beer Olympics were held for draft order, I got 3rd so I choose the 3rd pick over going 10th and having the turn around in the snake. JJ and CMC went 1 and 2 and I drunkly took Kelce at 3 because iv never had him and it was too tempting not to. I also realize the next morning I basically drafted half the Jags. Will be interesting.

You should have drafted Mahomes 2nd and linked that up with Kelce. I did the same in my other league. Great strategy.

The temptation was there, but the crew I draft with are season vets and I would have been scraping bottom of the barrel for RBs, potentially missing out on all RB1s. The difference between QB5-10 is small so I waited until like round 10 to grab Tlaw. I like my bench. All fringe RB-WR2s / Flex floors, and then Bijans handcuff if he gets hurt.

Same with the managers in my group, very seasoned. I’m pretty happy with how my draft turned out. RB was as you pointed out a weak spot I had to draft well late to build a bench of solid options which I did.

I already dropped Chandler for Rashee Rice. Check him out he’s a riser at WR in the Chiefs wr room…they got nobody in there lol….his only problem he can’t catch, two dropped passes Saturday….but they’re going to likely start him across from MVS.

There is also Kadaris Toney who is still healing from a miniscus surgery who’s probably got the best upside he just can’t stay healthy. Literally no on in our league took a single chiefs WR lol…even MVS is a FA. Crazy room…one of them is going to get a lot of balls and it isn’t MVS. Rice is a great prospect..he is going to get first crack at it. Mahomes loves him and they think his drops issue will subside once he’s in action on gameday.
