Saw somewhere on the interweb that Cousins would come back for a 1 year deal at 12 to 14 million. Seems like a bargain.

Happy KirkTuesday!!

I like two basic things in a QB ( Cousins or anyone else ).
STAY on the field and be able to throw the ball accurately. After that is gravy.
So, if we can get anyone in the 12 -14 mil range that can meet those two basics, go for it. We do not have that now on the roster.

I think KOC still wants to run his adaptive route running scheme, where the receivers read the defense, and alter their routes accordingly, but that is a very cerebral offense. It takes smart receivers, who can adjust their routes “on the fly” as it were, plus a QB who can anticipate what a receiver is going to do, and still deliver an accurate ball, while avoiding the rush. I think KOC understood he couldn’t do that with Darnold, so he simplified the scheme for him. Darnold put up big numbers in that simplified scheme. Now we have to see where KOC goes with McCarthy after two years with him. He has to know what McCarthy can, and cannot do well. Is there enough skill level there for KOC to produce a solid passing offense this year with McCarthy under center? We’ll see.

Those two items were my ground start “basics.” If we can get read the defense, throw with anticipation in an adaptive system, that would be great, but we are moving up the food chain.

I agree… KOC’s adaptive route scheme is at the top of the heap in challenging defenses. It can be very, very hard to stop. You just have to have the receivers and the QB who can execute it. K.J. Osborn talked about how hard it was as a receiver, to aggressively run a route combination with another receiver while also reading the defense, and determining what adjustment he needed to make. Very difficult. We saw with Darnold though, that a good arm, and decent reads, can work. If you are running the stick route with a wide receiver and the out under with the slot, it’s probably one of the simplest reads a QB can make. You’re looking at the safety, and the CB leverage to try and force a receiver inside or outside, and just seeing if the stick is there post snap or not. If not, then you drill the 5 yard out the slot is running under the stick, and call it a day. There are many very simple route combinations like this a QB can master if you really want to know. Brady lived on these kinds of throws his whole career as did Montana.

Good morning NoDak… I’ve seen all sorts of speculation on the internet about what Cousins wants, would accept, etc. I think it boils down to the team making the offer more than anything else. He’s not going to play for the Jets, or the Browns, or the Raiders. He wants to be the starter, on a team that can contend. I don’t see any situation out there that meets that criteria other than the Vikings, but I think the “organization” is getting its fiscal house in order, and are still thinking McCarthy might could get the job done. Thus, the Vikings probably won’t be calling on Cousins. I imagine Wentz is still on their radar, and maybe they’re looking at Andy Dalton, Jacoby Brissett, Derek Carr, and Geno Smith in lieu of Wentz.

Can someone help me with a “factual” number – this is not an opinion thing.
And I’m curious now because their are numbers being thrown around (earlier today) and folks thinking.
I’m not good at internet searches, but everywhere I look Kirk Cousins had 4 lost fumbles in 2023. BUT, some are adamant it’s 7, and some 3 with only one lost.
Now I apologize up front as most every expert I read talks about QB/INT ratio as a big deal. But somehow we got into fumbles which is in of itself off the main road.
So question – what is the ACTUAL number?
I just got 4 with a search.

I guess I could rewatch the 8 games and do a tally for myself.

That said, it isn’t all that important. Cousins passing statistics were off the charts in 2023, so if he was hit and fumbled the ball, it doesn’t matter.

Agree really – was just curious.
But on this matter, I believe what Joe Bugle ( I know you know him and he knows what he is talking about) says 80% of quarterback fumbles are on the offensive lineman.
So this entire fumble thing was a huge red herring.

It is a red herring, for sure. Joe Bugle certainly said that too. I ascribe to that position as well. QB’s don’t just drop the ball arbitrarily. They fumble when they get hit. Duh.

I have found a source that said Cousins had 7 fumbles in 2023. Same source says Dobbs had 14 fumbles in 2023 in 13 games.

I apologize to KFEY for saying he was lying. I was wrong, as some of my original sources showed far different data.

Thank you, that’s all I wanted. Go to the NFL’s official website and stats page, it lists 7 fumbles. For a total of 13 turnovers. I would imagine the NFL’s website takes the official stat keepers stats but I wouldn’t know for sure. And for some reason ESPN’s website only lists 4. *shrugs*

I do think we should pursue competence at the QB position first and foremost at the moment. Just my personal take. To me McCarthy remains a project, and really a question mark. The other 52 guys on the team, deserve stability under center, that gives us an ability to contend. Andy Dalton, Jacoby Brissett, Derek Carr, and Geno Smith are guys who can still run an NFL offense competently. Even Wentz is a more stable choice IMO.

Certainly Cousins could lead the offense to a top 5 status, but he’s just not gonna be affordable.

That’s just my take from the cheap seats.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  bowbunch
2 March 2026 11:27 am

Yeah… and there’s a reason for that. Fields isn’t a competent QB. He’s always been a great athlete and playmaker type. A guy who will do great things at times. To me, that’s just not what a team needs. In the NFL you need a guy with a good brain and a good arm. Over the last many years, teams have invested in athletes who can make plays with their legs, with the idea they could develop as a passer. I don’t see this model changing much either, because frankly finding a guy with a fast brain and very accurate arm, is a lot harder than finding a guy who can make plays with his legs. The NFL is enamored with the dual threat QB concept. They want a flashy playmaker under center to thrill the crowds and sell jerseys.

Is what it is, but I want a guy with a fast brain, and an accurate arm.

Cousins in his prime was never part of a Top 5 total offense. What makes you think past his mid-tier prime, and post major injury he would be capable of leading a top 5 offense? Mysteries abound.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  KFEY93

Cousins routinely had his teams passing offense in the top 10 of the league. The problem was a new OC every year, and the offense never maturing. Still every single year, the Vikings passing offense with Cousins was always very good. This offense is fully mature, and talented. With Cousins running it, it could be amongst the best in the league. If you recall the year he suffered the Achilles injury, he was leading the league in passing TD’s and second in passing yards when he went down. That was his second year in KOC’s offense.

Yes, Cousins would be killing it with KOC if he returned here.

I have no idea if that was leading the league. But he had 18 td’s against 5 int’s and 4 fumbles with a 104 passing rating.

And in 23, we had zero running game.

Does any of this really matter. 5 or 7 fumbles? But in 7.5 games he had 18 td’s for like 2300 yards, jefferson was hurt and we had no running game.
Compared to the boys we had under center this year, I’ll take that all day.

Yes it does, he was literally turning the ball over ON HIS OWN almost twice a game. Thats unsustainable and was a big part of why despite his “amazing faux MVP passing stats” their record was ass and they were losing games. To ignore that is ignoring the whole picture. Regardless, he’s not our problem any more and we should all remaining optimistic to never see him under center in Purple ever again, unless its for the Ravens I spose.

Do you see our QB’s last year? I realize you hate Cousins, I could care, just want competent QB play.
And in your whole picture, perhaps my memory is fuzzy did you count having your own guard (ingram) strip sack his own QB. And twice out tackle threw ola blocks causing the QB to get blindsided in the back just as he was cocking his arm.
Still, overall, I’ll take the 18 td’s and 2300 yards, and the turnovers, and with no running game, over our present state of affairs.
And I WON”T be optimistic until we can at least get that level of play under center. I don’t care who that may be.

From GROK
Kirk Cousins’ 2023 NFL season (with the Minnesota Vikings) was cut short due to a season-ending Achilles injury after 8 games. He started all 8 games he played in, posting strong efficiency numbers despite the limited sample.
Here are his key passing stats for 2023:

  • Games Played/Started: 8/8
  • Record: 4-4
  • Completions/Attempts: 216/311 (69.5% completion percentage)
  • Passing Yards: 2,331
  • Yards per Attempt: 7.5
  • Passing Touchdowns: 18
  • Interceptions: 5
  • Passer Rating: 103.8
  • Sacks: 17 (for 110 yards)
  • Rushing: 14 carries for 25 yards (0 TD)

He averaged about 291.4 yards per game with a very low interception rate (only 5 in those 8 games), leading to one of the higher passer ratings in the league for that partial season. This performance came before his injury in Week 8.
These figures are consistent across sources like NFL.com, Pro-Football-Reference, StatMuse, and team bios. Note that some current listings show his 2025 stats (with the Falcons), but the 2023 numbers above are specific to that year.
Hope it helps and I don’t care if he comes back but better be cheap couple mill up to 5 otherwise no.

No, he wasn’t… not even close. he had 18 TD’s in 8 games, with 5 interceptions. He was completing almost 70% of his passes, and averaging over 291 yards a game. He was at the top of the league in passing production, with a 103.8 passer rating. Prolific.

And if we’re into little factoids today, as I recall Jefferson was out with a leg injury and perhaps Hock also.

I believe you’re right on Jefferson… he missed the last three games Cousins played in with an injury. Can’t rememberize about Hock.

Incorrect, in 2023 he had 7 Fumbles and 5 INTs in 8 games. And was close to if no the lead league in turn overs at the QB position.

Total lie…. he did not have 7 fumbles in 2023.

Dude, it takes 2 seconds to google it. Don’t accuse me of lying because you have your head where the sun doesn’t shine and are delusional when it comes to this clown.

Summary

Kirk Cousins had 4 lost fumbles in 2023. This statistic reflects his performance during the season, contributing to his overall game metrics as a quarterback

Routinely = Twice in a decade I guess. And never once was it close to top 5. So, just go ahead and admit you misspoke and we can all move on with our day and be better for it. Try it, it feel’s good.

Who cares if it was top.5? If we were top 8 – 10 last year with our defense, we could win playoff games.

Your almighty and all knowing internet buddy stated that Cousins could hop in and run a top 5 offense. That is what spurred my comment. He never has been capable of doing that and never will be. That was my point. That is all. And Its really crazy how the end goal for some is to just “make the play offs” I get the strawman argument that you have to get there to have a chance to get to the bowl but its a full of holes. Plenty of poor teams make the play offs with the current structure. Winning 10 games and playing one play off game and being done is not a goal. Building a team that can own a division for half a decade and get to conference championships is the goal. Thats how you get to the bowl. This roster is still lacking depth due to poor drafting over the past 4 years, its not there. Kwerky ain’t changing that. No QB we bring in right now is changing that. JJ is going to have to improve, and do it fast. Thats our options until 2027. I get us as fans would rather them “win” some more regular season games for enjoyment factor and sneak into the play offs but, if you want the trophy at the end of the day, you have to see the bigger picture.

Big picture – tell me how many teams win a SB when they don’t even make the playoffs?
the idea that you have to be poor for a while to them be great is total BS.
Read Collins’ books and he’s the one who coined the phrase ‘good is the enemy of great.’ That’s why he wrote the second book Good to Great.
And us fans (me) want to win a SB but fully understand you have to win a lot of games to do that.

Speaking of China tech, Iran must have some fancy EW capability that jams IFF…three f-15 Strike Eagles (or 2 F-15’s and a F-18 depending on source) shot down by friendly fire over Kuwait, with (reportedly) no attempts to evade the SAMs. That’s gonna hurt, those birds are pricey!

I haven’t seen this report, but SAM’s aren’t going to be located outside of Iran, so they aren’t shooting down aircraft over Kuwait. EW suites on aircraft identify ground radars for SAM sites and AAA, then jam those radars. IFF isn’t affected by ground radars. The only way IFF is going to affect an aircraft is if the enemy aircraft successfully spoofs the daily IFF code, to allow it to close on our aircraft undetected, and fire on them. Which has never happened as far as I know.

OK, that link takes me to Fox, which wants me to disable my ad blocker. So I didn’t read it. Headline says it was the Kuwait air defense systems, which makes sense, since our EW systems were programmed to defeat the Iranian air defense systems. Likely Iranian aircraft were in the area, and the systems alerted on them and fired, but the three F-15’s were in close proximity and the SAM’s hit them.

Yeah they want me to disable my ad blocker as well. Apple has a setting that allows me to work around it. The help desk helped me find and activate it since I am ‘Tech Dumb’ and old.

I’m only speculating, as it can happen in DCS (a dynamic photorealistic flight combat simulator) that IFF is jammed by the target, such that when the SAM battery (Kuwaiti or American battery deployed in Kuwait) interrogates the aircraft it gets no response and hence may be viewed as a hostile. As an in-game example, a SU-34 EW (Russian) or EA-18 Growler (American) aircraft can jam all sorts of communication, radar, and navigation, the game gives a verbal notification from AEW aircraft that one is encountering jamming, which means using long range missiles is not advised lest blue on blue incident happens. Again speculating, perhaps the aircraft were returning from a mission in a three ship formation and were interpreted as hostile by the SAM battery given transponder jamming of IFF signals, and in turn the airmen were relaxed and perhaps assumed the launch warning (if they received one in a jamming environment) was false.

I assume this level of jamming sophistication is beyond Iran’s capability but we all know the Chinese are great at copying western tech.

After watch all the ‘good’ people of Minneapolis over the past several weeks, it seems Kyler Murray would be a good fit for this city – immature, childish but a woke video game talent.

To summarize Vikings QB news out of the Combine:

-they want a QB competition

– they want a new starter

– they believe in JJ McCarthy

– they want to get rid of JJ McCarthy

-they like Kyler Murray

-they don’t think Kyler Murray is a fit

– they are open to anything

– they’re specifically targeting Geno Smith

-they want Derek Carr

– they haven’t even talked to the Saints about Derek Carr

Hope this helps…
