Welcome back for a second straight victory Monday. What a great defensive battle, in the elements. It’s too bad Jordan Mason was injured, he would have been a lot of help. If nothing else, it would have given A-Aron a rest every now and then. Did I miss something, is Demond Claiborne injured? Oh well, we got the victory and only allowed the power house offense of the Bores to score a field goal. As hard as it was to watch the offense struggle in the rain, it was exciting to watch the defense keep the cry baby on the run. Hats off to the special teams. They didn’t give up any big returns, and had a blocked field goal.

Jordan Addison held to zero catches last week, not much of a factor this week either, but….. made a clutch catch to move the chains in the 4th quarter. For a guy plagued by (self inflicted) distractions, thought he did well to stay focused and contribute.

Thought Caleb Banks made some nice splash plays. Fat Fruit contributing again. I think both have a chance to be really good.
Byron Murphy looks different to me. Faster, reacting in coverage quicker. He’s been pretty stout imo.
I absolutely loved what I saw yesterday. Win a slugfest, on the road, in crappy conditions against the newly appointed king and this era’s ‘Bill Walsh’. We did it with timely turnovers (Redmond’s punch out at the goalline was beautiful, great coaching) great special teams play and not turning the ball over. Love it.
Despite giving up chunk plays in bunches and a blitz rate that I can only describe as ‘video game’ – I do NOT believe BFlo is overrated. This guy can coach – getting quality play out of UDFA’s and late round guys and already getting results with Banks and Orange. I’m glad he’s ours.
Carson Wentz played strong, smart, turnover free football. He’s tested and tough. I appreciate that.
Carson Wentz is also a statue that holds onto the ball way too long and might have a slower release than Jacoby Brissett, which is saying something. I think in great conditions, with time, he can still hurt teams with our weapons. The wet ball clearly bothered him yesterday – don’t think I saw one clean spiral come off his hand. His throws made it to the good guys, but several were ducks that I thought were risky. He missed badly on the deep shot to JJ that drew the call – Jets roasted that DB with the double move and a better throw equals 6 points there.
Despite giving up a long return to FTP last week, our ST unit has played well – Reichard a stud, Thorson looks great, flipped the field a few times and pinned Chicago deep. Solid coverage on punts imo. Rodgers block was coming, as he’s been close. I think he’ll get another one this year – dude has great timing coming off the edge.
And now the other stuff:
On Friday my ex-wife (we’re still friendly) are taking our beloved puppy Marley to the vet to cross the bridge. She got him when she was 19 – I met him 4 years later and he became my best good buddy as his momma and I got closer and attempted to build a life together. He just turned 18. He’s tiny but fierce, friendly and loyal. Loves laps and roast beef. Lost the use of his back legs about 4 months ago. Almost totally blind. No teeth. Most of the time when he’s not asleep he’s crying and clearly in pain, unless medicated. He’s motivated by food and has an appetite, but not much else. It’s heartbreaking but it’s time. We’ve gotten pain meds from the vet to keep him comfortable this week and all week we’re celebrating him with his favorites: fries, ice cream, bacon….. I’ll give him some chocolate on Friday – a goodbye kiss, because nobody, dog or human, should go their whole lives without tasting chocolate.

I would rather the team stay disguised in a veil of mediocrity. Now, we’re targets, especially Turner. Teams are going to double and triple him from now on, hopefully someone else steps up and gets after the QB.
You double turner on one side, Van Ginkle goes crazy on the other. Also turner drops into coverage alot, leaving the blockers with very little to do
watching the highlights of bucs/browns and I have a few thoughts:
seems like both teams’ defenses were better than their offenses. hot/humid weather may have tired out the defenses, because both offenses looked better in the 2nd half, although some flukey big plays had a hand in that. the browns TDs both looked like big mistakes on the bucs defense. both teams had some drops that deflated their offenses in the 1st half.
Mayfield is really good at wiggling out of sacks and running, but he doesn’t protect himself well when he runs. he’s like Caleb Williams lite when it comes to keeping the ball, but a better thrower than Williams, IMO.
the announcer said called FG attempts by the bucs “nearly blocked” on THREE separate FG attempts. I don’t know if the browns are good at almost blocking or if the bucs are bad at preventing the blocks, but if it’s the latter, the Vikings might block another FG in week 3.
Bucs very nearly pulled it off in the end.

Using your own words, it was one game (two if you consider giving up a bajillion yards to the Packers good defense) – let’s give it a few more games against legitimately good teams (not in the rain, which you’ll remember was a disclaimer) and see how it goes. I, for one, was not a huge fan of giving the backup QB a couple chances to win the game at the end with the good ol’ Prevent defense. I don’t know if you’re a fan of that, but I certainly am not.
That last 30-40 seconds was brutal to watch. It had my heart pumping! When they put that one second back on the clock, I was nervous, we’ve seen too many bad endings.

The Bears are the home team, that should be able to handle the weather. They play in an open stadium in the mid-west. The Vikings are a team built to win games inside on turf. The weather should have been an advantage for the Bears, not the Vikings.
You just generally cannot move the ball as well in the rain, and turnovers are more common. So that helped both defenses IMO.

I’m not a believer that blitzing 80% of the time is a sustainable strategy and I don’t think he’s as good as most here do. That said, he’s not a bad defensive coordinator (certainly better than average), just not the savior most people believe he is. Zimmer was a “defensive guru” and where did that lead us?
They won’t blitz that much all season. You set the precedent and then slowly steadily reign it in. They also blitz a lot more at home than on the road.

I’m not going by my opinion, as I am biased. But, before the season started, I would have agreed that the Packers and Bears were the front runners to win our division.,
I think the Lions are the best team in the North division, and SEA, LA, SF, and maybe even the Saints this year if Shough continues to play well, might be better than the Bears. So I wouldn’t consider 4th-6th best team in the NFC a superbowl contender. That’s not even considering BUF, BAL, HOU, CIN, and KC as better teams from the AFC. So no, not real superbowl contenders IMO. Which is to say the Vikings also have no shot, unfortunately.
That being said, I thought the bears would get more big plays this weekend from defenders falling down, scrambles from Caleb, and also the fact that we seem to give all receivers a 10 yard cushion like in the GB game week 1.

My daughters wedding went off without a hitch. Perfect weather (outside ceremony), it wasn’t too hot or cold and the rain stopped just in time. Unlike Kwesi with the QB room last year we had a contingency plan, in case it was raining. We had a lot of fun and a lot of alcohol was drank.

Riddle me this: a WR can be flying to the sideline, snag the pass and drag toes across the boundary while they are falling down and it’s a catch. A DB can catch the ball standing still, possess it while standing on his toes in bounds, stay in that position for a couple seconds and then let his heels touch down out of bounds, and it’s incomplete.
Also, isn’t leading with the crown of the helmet illegal? ESPECIALLY when you hit the ball carrier in the head and knock his helmet 10 yards downfield????
I thought the ball of the DB’s foot touched the white before his heel went down. It was very close, but I think I’m less upset about the good guys not getting it than I would have been if the teams were switched and the call went the other way.

What bothered me, on one of those catches the DB had his arms around the WR near the sideline and pushed him out, killing the clock. I would much rather him attempt to tackle him in bounds letting the clock continue to run.
After the third down fail he made the smart move to kick the FG.

As far as the ‘Prevent’ I usually go by the rule ‘If it is stupid and it works it is not stupid’.

I hear both sides. I’d like to make the playoffs, and if it all ends in heartbreak, to find a QB anyway. The early picks are not sure bets, and the QBs that come later are sometimes diamonds in the rough. We are due for some QB luck.

I always think of delay of game only being called if the ball isn’t snapped shortly after the play clock hits 0 (like one ref is watching the play clock, and when it hits zero, they turn to look and see if the ball is snapped, so there’s a half-second of grace built in.

The game felt a little like the outdoor playoff game in Minnesota against Seattle. We had 4 methodical scoring drives, and they had one, but a broken play leading to a TD and Walsh missing a chipshot doomed us to a 10-9 loss.

And KOC was basically keeping the ball out of Wentz’s rain soaked hands as best he could. He was playing to what was available to him and the conditions. I think KOC may be learning. Maybe. Hopefully.
But Flores would never have allowed the Vikings to lose! A fumble on the 1-yard line and Williams getting hurt and not able to run that one in both did them in. Could easily have been an 8 point loss.
I would hate to see how quiet it would be in here if we had lost

Dallas Turner is an animal. He was in Caleb’s face almost every passing play. If it weren’t for Caleb’s ability to escape Turner probably has 4-5 sacks. I almost feel bad for Baker Mayfield next week, almost.
Next week is a winable game. But on the road after TB loses to the Browns (wtf???) will make them angry. So far, only dominant teams seem to be Bills and Chiefs. We get the Bills in November, but wont play the Chiefs until February…..a revenge game
And after a two hour delay.
I loved that football played in the elements.
Now, games are delayed forever.
Oh. And strike one against me, as I took the Bucs in survivor.
I assume the delay there was due to the possibility of lighting.
Several rain games were played yesterday.
I saw “lightning” when I read about the delay, but I don’t know if it was actually lightninging or if there was just a chance
I figured lightning was in the area and that storm was moving over the stadium.
One does not mess with Lightning.
You took the Bucs (reasonable), I took the Ravens (also reasonable, I thought, plus I like picking against the *aints)
The Browns may actually be good, now that they are cashing in on their $250 million investment.
Turner does, in fact, look like a 10/10 pass rusher. Strong enough to push LTs back into their QBs, fast enough to catch scrambling QBs not named Caleb Williams, who eventually popped a hammy trying to get away
Really good oline or very fast passes could maybe mitigate the damage.
He also had a pass defensed, IIRC.
