Is there more cap relief if the Hitman retires vs is cut?
Wondering if they are trying to talk him into retirement or if he just wants to savor his final weeks as a Viking?

The Hitman is entering the four void years on his contract (2026-2029). Each of the first three void years is a $3M cap hit. The fourth year is $1.6M. I think if he’s cut though, his cap hit ends up being $4.3M this year, and $9M next year. I think it’s the same if he retires because he’s in his void years, but I don’t really know.

If Smith is a post June 1 cut, the Vikings gain $1.3 million in cap savings.

There is a story out there that Smith does NOT have any void years because his contract is voided in 2026.

Bottom line, I don’t think there is much on Smith’s contract that will significantly help with 2026 cap space.

Would rather see him retire as a Viking then get cut.
But if he is that inexpensive then he could stay as a player/coach.

He does have larger cap hits in 2027 and beyond, but I don’t think they are void years, so it would only count if he were still on the roster in the future.

Same as you.

He has been the definition of being a Viking and taking less money and reworking his contracts to fit the team.

Geno has a pro arm, and a ton of experience. He is a pretty good QB IMO. Some think his decision making is suspect, but I think overall he is a solid guy. I think he could run the KOC scheme pretty well.

He was on the injury report almost every week, or got hurt in the game and didn’t finish. With his cap hit being $8 million, he became expendable.

Cousins has always played at less than market value though, except maybe the Falcons offer. Probably market value there. Every other contract he signed was less than market value, just with a lot of guaranteed money. Remember, the Jets offered him more money than the Vikings did. Cousins made an under market value offer to KAM that was rejected in 2023.

I’m hoping that the Trump Presidency sets an example for the American people for generations to come. We elected a man with immense qualifications for building prosperity, and making deals. A man who ran a business empire. A man with common sense, and total devotion to the United States of America. A man unafraid to take on the enemies of this Nation. A man unafraid to change the status quo. A man who wields National power appropriately and understands the concept of peace through strength.

I sort of doubt this. I think McCarthy is going to be QB1 this year, with Wentz as his backup. I think the whole cap situation creates a scenario where getting the finances in order this year, giving McCarthy another opportunity to prove himself, and then moving on next year if need be is how it will play out.

My try at logic after a couple of cold ones.
You played some quarterback, and have been rather critical off JJ and his short comings. Also believe you have voiced serious concern about him making it.
I tend to believe KOC has even more experience than you and don’t you think he can see the things you see?
You have doubts, bet he has even more.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  JRobert
28 February 2026 6:52 pm

So yes, his 59% on target rate (NFL average is 74.5%) and 24.1% bad throw rate (worst in the league) give me great pause. Can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear as they say. That said, I know there are passing concepts that could improve him statistically fairly quickly. That would require a big shift in KOC’s scheme though. So, that’s the choice. Simplify the scheme to create quick throws that travel 7-10 yards on average, use the TE a lot more, and eliminate the throws McCarthy is simply weak on. That deep crosser we used to watch Cousins deliver routinely is a ball McCarthy struggles to connect on, and in fact, is one of the hardest throws for any QB. It’s one of KOC’s favorite concepts though.

Then of course learning to see the defensive shifts pre-snap that he has to adjust his protections for, and understanding who the Mike is, where the safeties are, etc all have to be better. That’s film study and skull sessions with McCown.

Only McCown and KOC know what they have in McCarthy completely. In other words the throws he can make that would get that on-target rate up to 75%. I think he can do better than he has, with that kind of adjustment. I think this is how KOC will proceed this year.

Again a little JR logic after a few, wouldn’t it be easier to just get another QB rather than change the entire offense and everything about it to “fit” the QB.
And if we’re going to turn into the ding and dunk, why do we need the likes of Jefferson and Addison.
Great, Zimball two.
And throw on all of this a history of injuries – like buying tickets on the Titantic.

Keep in mind that we heard somewhat ad nauseum last year that McCarthy has the “it” factor. This is that rare, charismatic aura some players exude. Some folks are just enamored with him. They’re pulling for him. So maybe the coaches try a little harder to give him a chance.

You and I agree on that. You think Parcels would handle a player based on his “charisma”? How about Gibbs? Belichick? Shula? Andy Reid? No, no, and no. The “entertainment” part of the Sports Entertainment continuum has completely overtaken the “Sports” part though. It’s about personality and merchandise sales now.

I am ‘pulling for him’ because he is a Viking.

There was laughter, there were tears, there was food afterwards. It is interesting how the culture is different across the US about the food part. I was raised in MN and WI and 99% of the funerals I have gone to have had food for everyone afterwards. When I was a kid and went to my grandmother’s funeral in Texas, it was only the family that had a meal together afterwards. The last 2 funerals I went to didn’t have food for anyone. They were both from the same family, so I don’t know if their culture was different, or if they were just both tight with the money.
