JOE MAUER IS A FIRST BALLOT HALL OF FAMER AS DAMN well SHOULD BE

He was by far the best catcher of his generation and the best hitting catcher in the history of MLB. Oh, I forgot, he’s also Minnesota bred and born. He’s the best athlete to come out of Minnesota in the state’s history. I remember watching this game live and being moved emotionally at this moment. Image how amazing the moment was for Matt Belisle to throw the last pitch caught by a first ballot HOF catcher.

Vikings News

Behind the BSPN paywall Mel Kiper’s first mock draft has the Vikings taking a CB in the first round. Here’s what he had to say:

Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson

In my final mock ahead of the 2023 draft, I projected the Vikings taking a cornerback. Instead, they went with wide receiver Jordan Addison, who had a fantastic rookie season, catching 10 touchdown passes. That need in the secondary still exists. Minnesota ranked 28th in passing yards allowed to receivers last season (3,019), and 2022 second-rounder Andrew Booth Jr. hasn’t quite figured things out. Let’s go back to Clemson — Booth’s former school — with the selection of Wiggins here. Wiggins was a lockdown defender in 2023, allowing just 4.2 yards per attempt as the nearest defender in coverage.

Could the Vikings take a quarterback? For sure. Kirk Cousins is a free agent, and I don’t think rookie fifth-rounder Jaren Hall will be the guy long-term. At this point, though, the most likely option might be running it back with Cousins, so adding a starter on defense makes more sense. This obviously could change as we learn more about general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s plans.

Article about potential Vikings DL draft prospects

Davante Adams would apparently like to catch passes from Kirk Cousins

Non Vikings News

Odds for the conference championship are currently Baltimore -3.5 over KC and SF -7 over Detroit. Personally I would bet on KC to cover as well as Detroit.

Minnesota Vikings Discussion Topic of the DAY

I see no reason to re-sign KJ Osborn, the Vikings effectively drafted his replacement in Addison, who is way better, and their WR2 is actually Hock anyway, what do the Vikings do to replace WR3 in the offseason? Bring him back? Powell, who was also the PR and didn’t suck at that, was a moderately ok WR4 is also a FA. Nailor is always hurt and has shown nothing when he has played, do you just hope he develops?

A little jealous. He was interested in the Vikings a couple years ago. I said at the time I was guessing the Vikings didn’t handle him properly, thinking they were the ones doing the interviewing instead of the other way around. I’m thinking now, though, that he also probably didn’t want to work with a young, analytics minded GM.

Especially since the last HC was the cause of all of the teams issues.

The Jordon comment gave me an idea for the Vikiings.
Go find some 6’11 or 7 foot former basketball player.
Use him at TE at goal line and just toss it up.
And for special teams, put him in the middle of the defensive FG team.

Cash per year left:
2024 – 30
2025 – 39.5
2026 – 38.5
2027 – 40
2028 – 41.55
There was a signing bonus with 6.6 left to be accounted for that would be a dead hit in the case of a trade. There is also some restructure and option bonus that I’m not sure about but would likely be a dead hit and amounts to about 27 mill. The dead hit in a trade for the Bills would barely be more than the dead hit the Vikings are going to take if Kirk isn’t on the Vikings this year.

The annual cash values seem to include the option and restructure numbers so they might be able to trade him with only a 6.6 mill hit or the cash per year to the acquiring team would be lower.

For years I have had big issues with Soros and his big money having far too much influence on. elections (one person) – e.g., local DA.s
Now our party has a couple big donors who don’t like our front runner so are forking over big money to Haley to keep her going. Wasn’t for that money (couple of brothers) she’d be long gone.

I think the criticism is that when teams/players talk about ‘being all about winning’ while mostly being about the $$.

Fans care more about winning then they do their teams owners making money.

Successful teams make money, chasing success seems a lot term strategy to make money. They are certainly not mutually exclusive.

Any signing bonus proration would affect the cap this year but the big salary numbers wouldn’t have an affect on the cap until after the expiration of his current contract. So, it all depends on the structure and how much his signing bonus, roster bonus, salary, etc.

This from Pro Football Focus…I am only reporting the news….

Maybe the Vikings will decide it’s time to rebuild, but they only just missed out on the playoffs in 2023 — and that was with Kirk Cousins missing the second half of the season. He has earned a 79.0-plus PFF grade in every season in Minnesota, and while he is unlikely to break into the elite ranks in 2024, he is good enough to get the Vikings back to the playoffs, perhaps even winning the NFC North again. Getting into the postseason with Cousins and hoping for some luck to fall their way feels like the Vikings’ best option, considering who else is available at the position and where they pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Still not going to get that guy without trying. You’re not going to expect Mahomes but you’re not gonna get one like that by doing nothing and even if they re-sign Kirk he’s only got a couple of years left. If you draft one now and re-sign Kirk you will know by the time Kirk is gone if you need to take another swing at it. If you wait until he’s gone you get forced into picking a Ponder.

Peterson led the Vikings to the playoffs once despite Ponder Playing QB…

That said, I won’t be upset if they move on from Kirk as long as they take a shot at one of the top 3….

We end up with Wilson and I will be pissed.

Crying isn’t a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength. Why do we link sadness with weakness? Allowing yourself to feel the pain will bring forth a river of tears. Allowing yourself to feel the pain, takes incredible strength. It doesn’t take strength to bury the pain.

Mullens is what he is. Bring in one of the guys that might be able to get better and be trade bait. Mullens is worth nothing if you have Kirk and a high drafted rookie. Teams will give high drafted QBs more chances. Get em cheap and even if you get a 5th or 6th round pick out of em when somebody loses a QB that is a win. Best case they show enough improvement that you can recoup even more.

Simply because of the complexity of the type of offense we run. People mention Minchew – notice him in Texans game. Same problem Dobbs has.
Mullens. I thought actually improved as he played more.
Don’t see need to waste money if we have Kirk, drafted QB and Mullens. Bringing in another QB will require most of the season for him to just learn our system – waste to me.

Depending on the rookie he might suit up as #2, but I would expect a high drafted rookie to be ready to at least be the backup in which case having Mullens who there isn’t any upside beyond being a solid backup is pointless.

Get one of the young, high drafted QBs like Zach Wilson, Mac Jones that have failed thus far. You can get them cheap but if they grow and improve you have a good backup with starting experience when the rookie takes over or trade bait when another team loses a QB. Having a good backup is important these days and you should always be developing other guys a la the Patriots when they had Brady.

I agree that Fields will likely stay in Chicago. Pickett probably but it wouldn’t surprise me if they move him. Howell likely stays and they get another. I am no tree hugger, the earth is warming, we don’t know exactly why and honestly warming a little has way less effect than cooling a little but it has been warming.

Yeah the science was wrong in the 70s but isn’t that the beautiful part of science? It can be wrong, it can change, and update and get better. Way better than religion which is the infallible word of god and can’t ever change. It’s why we are all pro slavery just like the Apostle Paul right?

Point being, just because they were wrong in the 70s about the next ice age doesn’t mean they are wrong now about the earth heating up a bit. It is, but it also isn’t worst thing in the world either.

Beauty that the science changes? The science once said the earth was flat. Then said it wasn’t. Did the earth change – no. The earth was always round. So at any time, is the science right, slightly right, or off.
If our society is going to spend hundreds of billions of dollars based on the ‘science’, we might well want to make damn sure it is really close to right.

The earth has been warming (a little). To deny that because of your political identity which is pretty much 99.9% the case is to deny many other scientific facts. The problem is the tree hugger left hijacks this info and blows it out of proportion and makes it a power and money grab. It’s the same thing the right does with some topics too. Just a bunch of crooks that you guys buy into hook line and sinker.

I don’t have an opinion on this based on my political affiliation. It is based on the science degrees I have and looking at the actual data. Not just the cherry picked numbers that the media and the climate wing nuts push. There have been other “warm” periods but they get omitted from the data set to make a big scary graph that shows the temperature of the earth climbing. And you really think they know what the global temperature was 100 years ago within 1 or 2 degrees? Give me a break. Even carbon dating is wrong due to different isotopes at times.

I just learned that before penicillin, syphilis could be “cured” in an outside-the-box kind of way. People discovered a high fever after symptoms could kill the syphilis infection, but how do you distribute a fever on demand?

Malaria.

People with syphilis could be infected with malaria. The malaria would hopefully kill the syphilis. Then the person would go on quinine for life to keep the malaria in remission.

Terrible predicament, but I appreciate that kind of problem solving. You have to be a smart person with a unique brain to recognize malaria could be used as a tool.

For those of you who contributed to the GM discussion below, I think we covered the territory pretty well. My takes:

  1. Yes QB is going to be a priority
  2. I would focus almost all efforts on the defense beyond that this year
  3. I would get a huge, massive, mean NT like Vita Vae
  4. I would get a linebacker who is big and fast. Alabama has a linebacker named Dallas Turner. 6’4″, 242 lbs, and runs a 4.45 forty.
  5. I would get bigger, stronger, faster, DB’s who can cover AND effing tackle.

Lol they will win 8-10 games and get bounced in the WC. Thats Kirks ceiling. He doesnt have the emotional control/head to handle the pressure of NFL play offs to get to a SB

hmmm interesting. wouldn’t mind seeing kirk go and then he can put everyone’s money where their mouths are…..the kirk lovers who have been banging the table for better offensive line to help him and the kirk haters who say it won’t matter, he is kwirk and will never win anything.

It all just depends on what narrative/story line the NFL wants to push next year. If they decide Kirk is going to be their darling then he might have a chance. This year it’s Mr. Irrelevant vs. Mr. Swift. The scrappy Lions may get a chance to dethrone Mr. Irrelevant, but the NFL will make sure Mr. Swift is playing in the SB and probably MVP so they can have “her” on the stage after the game.

does seem like the NFL picks their ‘darlings’ and things just start to fall in line. You weren’t here last Saturday and we were talking about the world class wrestling holds going on with the other purple line.

He wanted to remain in Washington too, but the GM didn’t want to guarantee his contract. Sound familiar? Same situation here. He wants to remain a Viking, but the GM won’t do the deal. Not saying KAM is wrong, just clearing up your misrepresentation of the facts. Cousins wants to retire a Viking, but the GM and he can’t (and won’t) agree to the structure of the contract.

If Kirk TRULY wanted to retire a Viking, he could make it happen.

But we all know it’s all about the money.

Wait?
So he could ‘make sure it happened’ if he didn’t get a NTC so then the GM could trade him away whenever he wanted??
Seems like a NTC would be more likely to keep him in Minn until he retired.

I played volleyball last night, and the other team had pretty good spikers. Not like, DI college or anything, but surely DIII.

Miraculously, I managed to dig a couple with the back of my open hand. Once I got home, I found the spikes had hit my hand with enough force to actually flatten my wedding band on my finger, so I couldn’t get it off initially.

That was maybe the funnest game of volleyball I ever played. We lost, of course, but all of us were somehow getting a hand on their spikes and thwarting the other team to the point of frustrating them.

One bad-ass girl on our team was superman-ing across the floor. Another girl actually shrieked in pain when he somehow got in front of a spike, took it full in the chest and somehow boob’ed it up into a perfect set.

Yeah, I am slowing down, for sure.

I wear kneepads even. I’m like the only guy out there rocking big marshmallows on his knees. I personally don’t know how anyone can play without them. Next step is to get sport goggles and wear those short, gray shorts with a fly on them. Plus, black socks.

July 26, 2010

Twins @ Royals
Greinke VS Liriano
Twins win 19-1
Danny Valencia hits a Grand Slam in the top of the 1st – his first career homer. Twins hang 6 runs on Greinke in the 1st.

Mauer went 5-5 with a 3-run homer in the 7th.

Career high 7 RBI’s

My seats were 3rd base side, literally right behind the Twins dugout. I was looking players in the eye when they came back to the dugout. Such a cool experience. Place was basically empty by the start of the 3rd inning.

This was right before Favre’s second year with the Vikings. At the time, he had not committed to playing (iirc Chili and a few others took a Wilf jet to Mississippi to convince him to run it back)

FS1 interviewed Mauer that night in front of the Twins dugout. Was 15 feet in front of me and a fairly large group of Twins fans that had made their way to the 3rd base side. Mauer had his back to us and I yelled ‘Joe! You’re the best quarterback in Minnesota!’

Easily the coolest sporting event (and the best tickets) I’ve ever had.

And now he’s a 1st Ballot Hall of Famer. Too cool.

Skol!

So, GM for a day. You have all watched the Vikings the first two seasons under KAM and KOC. This offseason, where do you go from a roster perspective? What’s wrong with the roster that needs to be addressed?

Surly Viking

The list of what is wrong is a very big list for this team. Have two options

  1. If you feel this roster is close, you can sign JJ and Kirk and try to make enough moves to run it back. I think this team could have made the playoffs with better luck on QB and other players health.
  2. If you realize this team cannot compete with the best, then decide of you are going into fire-sale mode or just continue to let high salaried players leave and attempt to build through the draft and a few more free agent acquisitions. Kwesi seems intent on bringing in oft injured players hoping they pan out….

Me? I trade JJ for picks, dump everyone that is expensive and over 30 and start over.
Stands would be 1/2 empty in 2024 since I suck as GM.

JRobert

and that’s really the question – is it 1 or 2, and that answer should dictate direction to go. I also think it’s hard to make a fair, objective evaluation of that.
For sure losing Kirk and JJ was big blow to our offense. On the other hand, have no real idea of where our defense actually is – new coordinator and some injuries.
Hopefully some folks that are pretty smart are. going to make this evaluation.

Crazy though, we won what – 4 games without JJ? JA stepped up and took up the slack for the most part.

But, given the choice of keeping JJ or JA, it’s JJ hands-down for me.

How much would a team give us for JA?

Addison is too early on his rookie deal and too cheap to get rid of unless somebody was dumb enough to give you 3 firsts and 3 seconds.

From these options I’ll take 1.5. Re-sign Kwirk, draft a QB high, extend JJ, probably let Hunter walk, Harry likely retires, dump Mattison and either draft a RB or bring someone in (Barkley, Henry or one of the others that will become available) or both, sign a CB in FA and draft one or three, new kicker, IOL in FA if available.

Makes sense. The big question for me is this. Are the Vikings a better team now than they were when this dynamic duo of Kwesi and KOC took over?

I think the answer is no. I also think they will have more cap room next year to improve things. That does not mean they will improve, just that they can try since they will have more cap flexibility.

Top Concerns for the ‘24 Vikings:

  1. QB (duh)
  2. IDL
  3. RB
  4. IOL

What I would do:

*Perfect World* – KC comes back for a 2 year deal as the ‘bridge’ and Minny drafts QBOTF (I think this is highly unlikely, but I’ve been surprised before)

Dont see KC coming back. So I’d attempt to sign a bridge QB (Minshew? Tebow?) and draft QBOTF.

Attempt to address IDL in FA. Christian Wilkins is the guy I’d covet most. I’d also take Justin Madubuike.

Resign Hunter – don’t know if this is even possible with the salary cap.

Draft Braelon Allen at RB – tricky, as the Vikes don’t have a 3rd rounder and that’s likely where he goes – but I love that kid. And he’d start his rookie year as a 20 year old, lots of miles left on those tires and he’s a legit power back with home run ability.

Sounds strange given the on-field performance but I think KOC and staff are happy with our IOL play and won’t address it aggressively. Maybe a late round flier on a tomato can. This may prove costly, but I think it happens. They could address this in FA with either Robert Hunt in Miami or Kevin Dotson in LA.

I agree with Ben on KJ – I’d move on. Probably can address WR in the draft with a late round pick. One FA WR I like is Darnell Mooney in Chicago.

Other FA’s I like:

CB Steven Nelson
LB Patrick Queen
LB Jordyn Brooks

Again, I have no clue if any of this is possible with the cap and where Minny sits with available money.
