Lousy rotten 48 on the front and that might not have been probably wasn’t very accurate.

42 on the back, that was pretty accurate – 5 pars, 2 doubles and 2 bogies…

The only inaccurate score on the back 9 was I took a 5 on a par 3 after I pull hooked my 4 iron into the side of house about 40 yards off the fairway – hit that son of a bitch HARD, just wrote down a 5 and got the hell out of there…thank goodness I didn’t hit a window.

I played 9 holes at the end of the day yesterday. First time I’ve played in months. Played with two very nice older guys, and we all made our excuses on the first tee, for how badly we expected to play. I didn’t hit any warm up balls or anything, just went to the tee “cold”. After the other two guys hit decent drives, I hit a really good shot down the right side with a draw that rolled out to about 200 yards in the middle of the fairway. From 160 out I hit a seven wood to 15 feet and made the putt for birdie. The guys were ribbing me about sand-bagging etc. Then went double, bogey, bogey, double, double, bogey, bogey, par. Nice first and last holes.

Reports keep twisting in the wind out there.

The Biden campaign is ‘quietly testing’ Vice President Kamala Harris’ viability against Donald Trump in a head-to-head survey of voters.

The survey, which is being conducted this week and was commissioned by the Biden campaign’s analytics team, is believed to be the first time since the debate that Mr. Biden’s aides have sought to measure how the vice president would fare at the top of the ticket. It was described by three people who are informed about it and insisted on anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information. They did not specify why the survey was being conducted or what the campaign planned to do with the results.

Biden advisers are ‘Discussing how to convince him to step aside.

A small group of Mr. Biden’s advisers in the administration and the Biden campaign — at least two of whom have told allies that they do not believe he should keep trying to run for a second term — have said they would have to convince the president of three things.

They said they have to make the case to the president, who remains convinced of the strength of his campaign, that he cannot win against former President Donald J. Trump. They have to persuade him to believe that another candidate, like Vice President Kamala Harris, could beat Mr. Trump. And they have to assure Mr. Biden that, should he step aside, the process to choose another candidate would be orderly and not devolve into chaos within the Democratic Party.

That is what I will be doing this weekend. I will be watching electricity load and trying to shave off some peak to save money.

That is mostly what it is about. If power companies have to buy beyond capacity on peak days, they have to buy at open market prices, which are quite a bit higher.

There are lots of fun ways to shave peak. Water heater control is the easiest. Electric water heaters hold heat pretty well, so power companies can basically shut them off via remote control all day. Then they can recharge at night when the peak is not happening. No fuss, no muss. Most people in the program never even notice.

VikingPhilip
Reply to  Wrenage
11 July 2024 12:23 pm

I have the water heater controller. I get a credit on my electric bill every month and the electric company can turn off the water heater when they need to. In the 15 years or so that I’ve had that set up, I think there was only one time when I noticed that we didn’t have any hot water.

Wrenage
Reply to  VikingPhilip
11 July 2024 12:40 pm

Yep, it is a pretty good deal. We sell the water heaters too for about half price, which includes installation if people go on the program.

Then we get electric sales, too. Everyone wins!

All about not going above base load on the electrical grid. Peak demand they have to find a source of extra energy somewhere. Electricity travels at the speed of light, it’s not somehow stored in the grid.

I read that the Snake River hydro plants have been idled down to one turbine only…to increase flows for recreation and fish, plus to increase fish survivability. Old turbines fish had about a 90% survival rate, the newer turbines have a higher 96-98% survival rate, but as of now fish survival takes priority over hydroelectric on the Snake.

Actually, to be fair to the administration, the dams were originally put in place for flood control, and were built with fish ladders. Hydroelectric was added later. So if one were an elected official you’d be damned if you do, damned if you don’t. But on the Snake, fish and flows are king.

Any gift of $18,000 or less to any one person is not taxable.
If you want to give more, you give a gift, and the wife can each give $18,000 separate gifts.
Spread it out over a few years if you plan on giving more than that.

If you combine with your wife or anything more than $18,000, you are required to file a gift tax form 709.

Here’s my tax tip.

You and your wife each give separate $18,000 gifts to relative A in early December.
Then give the remaining balance to relative A after January 1st. Assuming the timing is convenient.

That way, no tax return is required.

They really can’t, other than the Bank is required to report it to the IRS if it is $10,000 or more. My guess is that the IRS will flag it if it’s more than the $18,000 amount.

So if you want to exceed the amount, take out $1,000 increments in cash, give it away and it’s not reported.

Actually, even that is extremely limited now.
A couple filing a joint return needs about $28,000 in itemized deductions to even make it worth the tax filing.

People now need a large mortgage, high property taxes and large donations in order to be able to deduct them.

We barely were able to qualify for itemizing in ’23 and that was with 2 mortgages and lots of medical bills for The Teacher (foot surgery, dental, laser eye surgery, Covid, etc).

Don’t expect to qualify in ’24 unless there is enough to write off with paying 2 mortgages and several large donations.

And if we can manage to qualify in ’24 I suspect it will be the last time for the foreseeable future.

I was thinking go get a 250K 15 year mortgage maybe at about 6.25 and get the tax deduction. Then take the money and invest and maybe turn into a positive arbitrage.
Figured he’d have property taxes and some donations.
But as you indicate, this won’t work if standard deduction is higher. Do know property and state taxes limited to 10K – thanks Paul Ryan.

Now I admit I’m sick of taxes and always looking for things. Especially since the dems give ii all away.

Yup, I’m in the standard deduction bucket now and would have been with the current SD even when we had a mortgage.

I did figure out what it cost us to put the addition on our shouse. It was about $100 large more than the estimate of 250. Cost of labor and materials is high in our neck of the woods.

I could have done the plumbing and most of the wiring myself but didn’t want the time suck.

Oh, that could be. Don’t they say something about if you don’t vote liberal in college you have no soul and if you don’t vote conservative in adulthood you have no money?

I did vote NDP (way lib) I believe it was 1990 in the only national election that occurred after I turned 18 and before I emigrated to US and could no longer vote in Canada. Then it was a long 12 year hiatus until I became a citizen of the US…and my political inclinations definitely changed during that time. Must have been my damn American wife!

Oh, BTW, one requires ID to vote in Canada, the elections are federally administered. Not some weird province to province BS and wringing of hands about some people don’t have driver’s license or passport.

Some years ago, a large lodging chain ran a TV commercial depicting an operating room with surgeons and nurses gathered around the patient. One member of the team begins issuing orders on what to do to save the patient. A second asks, “Are you a surgeon?” He replies, “No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.”

By inference, his stay somehow imparted great knowledge of a field that he was neither trained in nor practiced.

I’m just blabbing.
You are under no obligation to come up with one everyday.

Thank you for putting up a thread every day!

Might actually get measurable rain tomorrow for the first time in 6 weeks.
One can hope.

I am really hungry for a sausage, egg, cheese McMuffin.

Maybe a breakfast burrito, too.

I wonder if I can leave work to go to McDonalds and call it a medical appointment. It is for my wellness, after all.

She seems dedicated to the task and even has a line set up for when she finishes the first one.
Bet she is fun/popular at parties.

I woke up at 3AM and could not fall back to sleep. Waited until I thought I could get up without the wife getting to mad (4:30). So I got ready and headed into work, not much else to do in the morning.
