It’s finally Friday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion! Every day you can join us for the latest Minnesota Vikings news, lots of Minnesota Vikings talk, also NFL news and updates, and most anything else you may have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

It’s gonna be a long wait until Sunday night. I’m not sure how much I’ll watch throughout the day, I want to be fresh so I can cheer loud. You know, because they can hear me. Seriously, we’re thinking of maybe ice fishing on Sunday, listen passively to games on the phone or something. It’s either that or hunker down at noon and settle in for an 11 hour football binge. That doesn’t sound so bad, either.

Question of the Day

Here’s a list of all Vikings who will be free agents after the 2024 season ends (hopefully February), data retrieved from OverTheCap. The heading contains free agency type, 2024 snap % (to this point), age, and the APY (average per year) of current contract. I sorted by current APY, maybe I should’ve sorted by snap%. Oh well.

The Vikings are projected to have around $78 million in cap space, per spotrac. That’s before signing free agents, draft picks (which shouldn’t take much since the Vikings only have 3 draft picks in 2025 right now), or contract extensions.

Which players do you re-sign? If the player is a starter, how do you replace him if you don’t keep him (free agency, draft, trade, etc.)?

For a list of all Vikings players with contract detail, here’s a link to that data on Spotrac.

Vikings News

The Vikings are underdogs according the “experts”, per Vikings.com. Not shocking, especially considering that the game is in Detroit.

The updated Vikings @ Lions week 18 injury report, also from Vikings.com.

NFL News

A league-wide NFL injury report, from NFL.com.

Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury is interested in head coaching again ‘at some point’, per NFL.com. Hilarious. My interpretation of that statement: “I know which vacancies are going to be available this year, and hell no”.

Jayden Daniels headlines the list of CBS Sports’ NFL All-Rookie Team.

Media Selection

This is a really good video about Jameis Winston, I like him a lot more after watching this.

Hoping for at least an entertaining game that does not embarrass the state the way Tampon Tim did.

Kamala Harris is going viral for botching the Pledge of Allegiance while swearing in the Senate for the 119th Congress.

The embarrassing moment followed after she asked the Senate body to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag in unison.

“Join me in pledging allegiance to our flag,” she began before turning to face the flag. “I pledge allegiance to the United States,” Harris stated, before trailing off, forgetting the phrase “to the flag.”

Same. I think we beat Detroit and Dan Campbell does Dan Campbell things in the WC that doom the Lions.

Sky is the limit for this team imo. It won’t be easy, but we’ve got a team that can beat anyone, anywhere. I believe that.

If it ends badly so what? Playing with house money. Swept GB. Swept Chicago. Beat the Douche in London.

Successful season in my book – the superbest of Owls would be great, it’s what we all want. But this year has been fun. Future is bright in Minny.

Great owners, excellent coach, and a gm that’s only gonna get better imo. I will die on this hill, even if it wasn’t Tucker, I DO NOT think that was a dirty play.

First if you have a issue, your issue needs to be with the NFL. Not only was what he did legal, he performed a proper technique that is effective and safer. He didn’t do what that shit head from the Lions did and spearhead right through his knees. It was a proper cut block. It’s exactly the way I would coach it. Outside arm across the opponent, not just spearing through someone’s knee, it’s exactly what he did.

2nd I know a lot of people were on his ass because he got mad at that Lions player but those are two very different situations. The Lions situation when you’re a ball carrier running full speed and someone rifle nose dives through your knee you have no way to protect yourself. But a guy in the tackle box holding the edge absolutely has his hands free to sprawl a little and push the blocker down… I played DL in college, I coached offensive line and DL at the HS level. I drilled this shit all the time with my DL guys and told them if someone cut blocks you legally and you get hurt you have no one to blame but yourself. This bullshit about be a man? Are you kidding me? Tuck doing that had nothing to do with not being able to take him on head up. It’s a great and legal technique to slow a guy’s pass rush. As a former offensive lineman and defensive lineman, I refuse to believe cut blocks are dirty. They aren’t. If cut blocks are dirty so is shooting on someone in wrestling.

Last thing is people also pointed out Hitman getting flagged, well that flag was fuckin stupid. He started at or above the waist, maybe I am wrong and that is still considered a penalty in the NFL but at the high school level you can cut block anyone anywhere on the field as long as you start at or above the waist and maintain contact on the way down.

Kinda dirty, yes, but he was probably coached that in certain situations because it’s technically a legal block. I do not believe he’s a dirty player or bad guy. FTP brought him aboard, he didn’t choose them. He very well could be a good dude, but as viking fans we’re programmed to hate the pukers, hence the negativity towards Tucker.

I’m plenty nervous. If BFlo pressures and the Lions do well, I’ll be frustrated about the blitzing. If the defense drops back and the Lions do well, I’ll be frustrated about the lack of blitzing.

I trust our offense to get plenty of yards on Sunday, but Jones needs to not drop the ball, and Darnold needs to be willing to throw it away when it’s the wise choice.

Handling the blitz is easy, if your offense gives you a place to go with the ball. If the call is four verticals, and they rush six, the QB is toast. Scheme and practice make good blitz beating QB’s.

JRobert
JRobert
Reply to  No longer New Vikings Fan

Well Detroit seems to regularly have it figured out. and if just one of the four verticals realizes he’s the “hot” receiver, they’ll beat it.

There’s no “hot” receiver on four verticals JR.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  JRobert
3 January 2025 3:57 pm

The #1 receiver on both sides of the ball in a 2×2 formation runs a fade route and tries to get behind the deep defender. The #2 receivers will run seam routes two yards outside the hash marks and stay locked into those seams if the coverage is a one-high safety look.

If the coverage observed is a two-high safety look, then the outside receivers will still run fade routes and the Y receiver will stay on a locked seam route two yards outside the hashmarks but the H back will change his seam route into a post route. The H back is coached to avoid the outside linebacker by any means necessary and then break his route into the open area between the two safeties.

The running back is running an option route over the ball at four yards to hold the linebackers. If the linebackers bail into coverage, then the running back is an easy outlet for the quarterback. BUT if the defense blitzes the running back is stuck. He has to try and help block. This leaves the QB with nowhere to go with the ball.

This is the exact scenario Tom Brady faced under Bruce Arians when he went to Tampa. Brady was getting killed, and went to Arians to change the offense, and Arians (to his credit) did.

JRobert
JRobert
Reply to  No longer New Vikings Fan
3 January 2025 4:30 pm

Well that’s complicated. But when I played, a long long time ago. the most inside receiver on the side of the formation where the free rusher is coming from, was supposed to break off his route to a quick in to give the QB a quick throw.
And that’s why those receivers are suppose to be looking down the LOC to see what’s happening.
But then again, that was a long time ago.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  JRobert
3 January 2025 5:02 pm

Well it depends on where the blitz is coming from, but the four vertical offense is built to force the defense to get into a two deep safety look, and stay there. That was Arians plan, and for the most part, offensive coordinators have bought into that.

The difference between the failure of blitzing against the Lions in the first game and the success of blitzing against this latest GB game is zone vs. man.

It felt like most of the blitzes vs. Lions let Goff have a quick route in the soft zone areas.

Against GB he had press man coverage, which forced Love to make tight, accurate throws.

Vikings win this Sunday. Never an easy win, but I feel this will be easier than last Sunday. Their defense cannot hold up, and Flo is a mad genius.

I am more concerned about one or two bad plays destroying the team in a playoff game.

Example – Sam on the drive after the INT. Dude just balled out.

I’m surprisingly calm going into the weekend. I had more worry that the FTP were going to spoil our run at the #1 seed.

Stop me if you’ve heard this tune before…….

I fully expect Sam to lead an opening drive TD, our D will force a 3nOut, and we’ll be up by 14 in no time.

Into the half with a comfy lead. Loins adjust, start making it interesting again. Trade leads a couple of times, we pull uncomfortably ahead with 3 minutes left, ice the game with a strip-sack or INT of Goff.

Cue the Gatorade, out come the NFCN CHAMP hats.

This was a rebuild year for us, and we are (as of now) pretty healthy, compared to the Lions who are coming off a brutal playoff loss and had high high hopes this year and they are not healthy so if they lose they play right away next week and so yeah i just think the pressure is on the Lions

Since he went down, the Lions have maintained there was a chance Hutchinson could return if the team makes a deep enough run into the playoffs. Hutchinson has also claimed if Detroit makes the Super Bowl he’d be healthy enough to play in it.’

He has been activated or his practice window open or whatever and said he might play. The way they were talking this morning, it sounded like there is at least a 50/50 chance he plays this weekend.

Severely limiting the sugar intake was the biggest thing I fixed. There are no sweets or highly processed carbs in the house(Pop tarts are awesome, but no).

Booze should be cut out completely, but that is a work in progress. 1-2 times per week for now, but eventually that needs to go as well.

The Army cracked down on weight and it took me a little while to get onboard with it. Remember going to lunch with a co-worker and I ordered a shake (it was summer in Alabama after all). He said ‘You drink shakes? No wonder you’re fat’.
That cured me of Shakes/Blazzards/Frostys, running took care of the rest.

Even after my marathon when I was down to 160lbs I still wouldn’t drink a shake no matter how much I loved them.

I should have joined the Army. Took the test, and wanted to be either in the Jazz band (no guarantees, but they could guarantee Marching. ew.) or fly helicopters. Since I had no college degree, they wanted to put me on chopper maintenance. I passed.

As for drinking, that’s been another dumb choice, but I did quit for 10 years. Decided when my Son was 11, that I would not have another beer until I could have a beer with him at 21.

Now he overdoes the booze. Tried to set a good example, then he went off to college and learned how to overdrink…..

The “setting a good example” thing is interesting to me. I don’t know if there is a right way or a wrong way to go about that.

I have seen several youngsters whose parents didn’t drink go off to college and fall in love with the bottle. We tried to teach our son that having an occasional drink didn’t mean you had to get drunk. So far that seems to have worked out for us, he is 21 now and definitely enjoys alcohol – but not to the excess.

Again, I don’t claim to know the right way or the wrong way on that whole issue.

JJ is probably the most willing blocking all-pro receiver in the history of the NFL. He constantly is giving his blocking assignment his best shot.

Reminds me of Kirby Puckett, Tom Kelly famously said “When your best player is running out ground balls hit to third in cold, rainy spring training games, it makes your job as a manager pretty easy”

What’s the deal with Daniel Jones for next year? Let him walk and find a team to compete for a starting position? Keep him, Sam and JJ? Sam goes (hopefully for picks) and we roll with Jones (aka Sam Darnold 2.0) and JJ?

peterplaysbass

I’ve heard they may elevate him to the active roster this year so that the team will be eligible for a compensatory pick if he’s signed by another team as a free agent.

If they want him involved in the comp pick equation he has to be active this week. If they don’t elevate him one might read into it that they intend to keep him which in my mind means you’re letting Sam walk. On the other hand, they will likely be spenders in free agency so unless Darnold and Jones get a big deals and they also let Bynum and Murphy go get big deals, they will not be getting comp picks anyway. Even then, it may be a wash in the comp pick equation.

In other words, she’s a big fuckin liar who thought her constituents were dumb enough to thinks he actually had a meeting with and won her conversation with the leader of North Korea… Or the fact they just don’t care she’s a huge liar, being a huge liar only matters to people when it’s the other side doing it. haha.

What’s funny is I don’t disagree with your approach but I never say the replacement has to be better because of some Vikings situation. I can’t remember the exact situation but it was like either Dakota Dozier replaced someone on the OL or he was replaced by someone and I was FOR SURE it couldn’t be worse… it was worse haha.

No he isn’t. And I hate that turd. But don’t pretend lying bothers you and turn around support Trump. They are both lying turds who will say anything. But at this point Joe might honestly think that whatever they feed him to say is true, he might not know any better at this point haha. Either you believe he is brain dead, (which I do) or you believe he is a capable swindling liar like Trump and most other politicians are. Can’t have it both ways.

Can’t have it both ways.

Actually you can have it both ways with Biden. He has been proven to lie in the past, he actually had to back out of a presidential race because of it. He is now brain dead and senile.

Wrong, what’s funny in your guys complete one sided view point on things sometimes you make arguments that give too much credit or not enough blame to the other side and you don’t even realize it. It wasn’t Biden for the most part lying about how mentally sharp he still was, it was the whole party. Bunch of lying shits. Also you can’t have it both ways. Again either you believe he was capable of the mental capacities to be a lying swindler (which again I know he was earlier in his career but we are talking about now) or you think he’s brain dead.

I’m trying hard to follow you here. As an older guy who thinks about this some, can’t someone who is older and not always there so to speak, also be an habitual liar?
And just using Biden as an example, He has been a terrible liar his entire life. Now that he’s older and diminished mentally, he is no less of a liar.
Is this wrong?

Then you just pick and choose where it suites you. Ya know? Either you think he’s a brain dead puppet or you don’t. You can’t just go, he’s brain dead, he can’t think for himself, everything he does he does with the hand of the party up his ass… then turn around and go… Yeah he’s also cognitive enough that when he talks he does with intentions to be on the sly and conniving, lie, cheat and, swindle. I mean you can I just don’t think it’s accurate or makes sense. He’s gonzo, he doesn’t know what he’s saying, he just reads what they tell him to say.

No, that’s just being wrong. There is a BIG difference between the two things. The definition of lying is: Lying is the act of making a statement that is known to be untrue with the intention to deceive or mislead someone. It can also mean creating a false or misleading impression.

Again you are missing the Forrest for the tree. The party is a corrupt bunch of shit heads who have their hand up his ass. Quit giving him the blame when it’s those scum bags around him that are the real issue. Calling him braindead is accurate and the correct thing to point out. But then to call him also a big liar is both having it both ways which is wrong and ignores the fact of who the real lying sneaky shits are at this juncture.

You guys get so blinded with hate you miss the real issues.

You just try to hard to be contrarian. Biden has always been a habitual liar. Even if he has dementia, that doesn’t change and dementia comes and goes. Is he also being puppeted? Yep. Doesn’t mean he’s all of a sudden a good person and it has nothing to do with all the other sleaze balls in DC.

OK, you still don’t understand the meaning of lying. Got it. We aren’t going to see eye to eye on this not because of differing of opinions on the topic at hand but because you have have skewed the meaning of the word lying to not mean what it means. Got it.

You don’t understand that people with dementia still have cognitively positive times. One can both be mentally declined and still be a pathological liar and dirt bag. Getting dementia does not change who a person is.

I never said he is brain dead. I said he is older with some degree of diminished capacity. And I’m also sure he has lucid moments also. Not the best state for a POTUS.
I don’t think there is anything ‘pick and choose” about what I just said.
And someone, anyone, that is in the state described can also be an habitual liar.
Isn’t that true?

Gotcha, I said he’s brain dead haha. If you don’t believe he’s a dementia patient who doesn’t fully understand what’s going on then yeah you’re good. Sorry I just assume most think he’s brain dead because I’ve heard it a million times and I do tend to agree with it for the most part. That’s my bad.

You do understand you can also find a list that “goes on and on” about Trump being a habitual liar right? So either it’s bad on both sides or it’s not bad.

I do agree about how he’s braindead now but use to be a lying swindler that’s true.

I don’t believe anyone here has ever said Trump is a saint. Maybe I am wrong and have missed it. For the most part I believe everyone here knows what type of person Trump is. If you don’t, you’ve been living under a rock, the man cannot sneeze without it being all over the news.

Okay, I got my workout in, and I am on my second cup of coffee. On to the QotD.

Cam Bynum. Sign him.

Byron Murphy I would also sign.

Cam Robinson has played pretty well, but his contract is high , and he had been benched by the Jags. If he is willing to stay for backup money, sure. Otherwise, nope.

Anyone over 34 = Bye (Sorry Hit man. Please decide to stay as a coach)

There is nobody else that would be “OMG MUST BRING HIM BACK” in my mind. Nobody. Even Sam. I am sure the team will compete again next season, since it is what they do with this GM/Coach.

They have money to spend, and very little draft capital next season. I expect more free agents will be brought it, and I also expect a lot of the guys listed will be brought back. Some will leave, and that will be a bit sad.

Losing Kirk/Hunter gave the team money to bring in the talent that has the team competing today. I like that plan moving forward. Keep doing it.

One thing of note, I really feel the team needs to upgrade at IDL, and Center, and Right Guard. But that is kind of a broken record the last 8 seasons.

I have been able to enjoy this season more than any in the last 15 years. This feels better than 2017.

Big part of that was getting rid of this boat anchor.

IF we re-sign sam or franchise tag him, i’d think we’ll roughly have around $30 mill in cap space still…

then if we re-sign a few guys…

we’ll have to rely on the draft to get our stud defensive tackle…

It looks to me like if we don’t re-sign Cam (what godsend he has been!) and if we cut Hitman (sorry harrry!) and if we franchise Sam – we would have around 38 million in cap space.

He is elite in open field blocking – i.e. screen plays or anywhere he has to pull. He is very athletic, but because he is undersized he gets bulldozed on pass plays by the bigger nose tackles.

question of the day:

My opinion which is normally way better and smarter than everyone elses, here are the guys they let walk:

Cam Robinson (unless he wants to take a pay cut and move to Guard
Harrison Smith (retires a super bowl winner)
Byron Murphy (he seems the type that will chase a big payday and since INT’s are what people seem to think are what makes a Corner, he’s on pace for a big payday)
Gilmore (unless he takes vet minimum and wants to take a lesser role)
Risner (i think we move on from him)

Guys we re-sign:
Sam Darnold (he’s going to take a bit less for a 2 year deal to run it back and be in line for a big pay day when he is 30)
Aaron Jones (he likes it here)
Griffin (might as well)
Tillery
Bullard
Ward
Jones 2
Cam Bynum (he’ll get paid, but he and Theo Jackson are gonna make a great safety combo)
Theo Jackson (he and bynum are the future safeties here)
Jalen Redmond (he’ll get a nice little bonus and stay here)

I think alot of the defensive guys will depend on if Flores comes back or not. Wouldn’t be shocked is a team gives jones II a bigger payday than we want to give him

It is one of those stupid company policies where someone has to cover Friday just in case someone stops by and needs assistance. It is really rare for anyone to stop at our office plus, I won’t be able to help anyone anyway. Yeah me.
