Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

It’s New League Year Eve, and the Vikings have been busy since the ‘legal tampering’ period began yesterday. So far, the Vikings are retaining the services of their own free agents Aaron Jones, Byron Murphy and Ryan Wright. As far as additions, the Vikings are rumored to be adding (these moves cannot become official until tomorrow at 3 pm central) center Ryan Kelly (thank God), former Eagles CB Isaiah Rodgers, and former Browns CB Bubba Bolden.

Offense

Kelly will be an immediate starter, as the move to bring him in will spell the end of the Garrett Bradbury era in Minnesota. Bradbury was a first round pick of the Vikings, and while his run blocking has been adequate, his pass protection performance has been subpar at best. The addition of Kelly will be a massive boost to the O-line’s pass protection, which should help J.J. McCarthy learn the ropes of the NFL QB position. The team will likely still look to upgrade one or both guard positions, but improving the center position should help immensely.

Defense

Murphy will obviously start, while Rodgers and Bolden will be solid depth players in the secondary. Rodgers will likely fight for a spot in the starting lineup as the second or third CB. Aaron Jones was a good signing, in my opinion, and I hope it is a sign that the Vikings plan to use the running game more and become more balanced on offense. I think Ryan Wright will likely compete with another punter to be added later, as he has dropped off a bit in the couple years following his strong rookie year.

Thoughts

I like the moves so far. If you go to Twitter, you’ll see the annual gnashing of teeth because the team isn’t signing ALL THE FREE AGENTS!!! Many fans think that the best thing to do is to go out and spend like a drunken sailor, and if you don’t, you’ll miss out on all the good players. I believe that teams who go out and spend big early tend to make mistakes that cost them dearly this year and into future years. Most of the annual ‘winners’ of free agency don’t see that translate to wins on the field, and they see their cap space dwindle in following years.

To me, it appears that the Vikings are being prudent, adding pieces when they are cost-effective, and are keeping future years in mind with the contracts they sign. It seems to me that the team is effectively looking to build a team who can be a long-term consistent competitor.

I’m also glad that I’m not a fan of the Cleveland Browns.

NFL News

Our old pal Sam Darnold has a new home in Seattle, as he signed a juicy contract to be the Seahawks new signal caller, story from the Star-Tribune.

CBS Sports has an NFL free agency tracker with the latest from around the league.

The Texans are trading Laremy Tunsil to the Commanders for a couple of day two picks. I’m not sure what the Texans are doing here. QB CJ Stroud struggled a bit in his sophomore year, with pressure being cited as a main cause for his struggles, so I’m not sure that trading one of the best left tackles in the league is a good idea.

The Falcons released DL Grady Jarrett (having a $40 million/year backup QB may have contributed to that head-scratching move) and the Bears are rumored to be signing him, according to Yahoo Sports.

Interesting.

Free agent WR Trent Sherfield is signing with the Broncos on a 2-year, $8M deal. Decent guy, but not a game changer. No loss here.

Being surrounded by Kelly and Darrisaw will only help too. No sense in dropping more money there. Get secondary help, another RB or roll the cap space to next year and have the ability to sign again. If they’re solid i don’t see a problem keeping a little in reserve for an unexpected injury or to replace a player you thought would be better.

Plus, if you keep rolling a little forward it could help with future contacts, like Addison, and keep this team in the hunt for the long term. They don’t have to go crazy all in. They’re all in enough now for me to be happy, now just make it a long term deal.

The Trump administration will “immediately” restore intelligence sharing and security aid to Ukraine following the announcement that Ukraine backs the U.S.’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia.

On Tuesday, official representatives for Ukraine and the United States met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to discuss the possibility of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

It will go into effect immediately — as long as Russia accepts the plan.

Really it’s 2 things:
He’s desperately trying to retake the Russian territory currently under Ukraine control and might not accept a ceasefire until that’s done.

Putin is a very bad person. Evil even. His big sticking point though is not about retaking Russian territory. His sticking point is what Zelensky was trying to achieve all along in the war; being a part of NATO and garnering security agreements from Europe to protect his very corrupt nation from Russia. Putin does not want NATO on his doorstep. Yes, there is a lot more to this, but in the end, Ukraine wants to be a part of NATO. Unfortunately the NAZI influences, white supremacists, and criminal organizations that run the country make the rest of the world sick to their stomach, so NATO isn’t gonna budge on their rejection of Ukraine.

Teams win games. The only piece of the team a QB directly affects is the passing game. One aspect of the teams total output. He does not win or lose games all on his own. If a kicker misses a chip shot field goal to lose a game, it’s not the QB who missed the kick. Anyone who claims the QB carries a team, has never played the position, and knows nothing about team sports in general.

There is a very long list of NFL QB’s to have never made it to a Championship game. To even make it to the NFL a QB has to be great. The NFL requires more skill and ability of an athlete than fans understand. There are 32 starting QB’s in the NFL, out of thousands of possible applicants. If you play QB in the NFL, you are an amazing athlete.

GREAT QB’s coincidently, play on great teams. Name the QB that ever made it to a Championship on a bad team.

Other options include Brissett, Trey Lance, Cooper Rush, Tyler Huntley, Heineken, Drew Locke, Mason Rudolph. I want no part of Mariota, very little interest in Wentz. Mac might be ok, but I don’t think he’s a much better option than Wentz. I think the best would be to get somebody with some good experience and Flacco would fit the mental bill if you go in assuming JJ is going to play the whole year. He’s been the MVP and won a SB. Heineke is kind of intriguing as well. He’s been around awhile now, had some success but also failed. He could play a game or two and I could see him being a good mentor.

When Trump lost the first time so many people were taking pictures of gas prices and egg prices etc… just as documentation to see how much worse it is under Biden. Every time gas or any prices rose even a little bit, posts about how it was 100000000% Biden’s fault why prices were going high but crickets when it happens under Trump. I am sure when some good news happened under Trump you said or at least gave thought into looking into, well that’s probably due to the Biden admin or is it just another one way street? lol… I don’t disagree with what you are saying.

My personal perspective is, what policies has Trump enacted to cause egg prices to go up? None. Biden enacted dozens of policies to drive up the costs of everything, including ordering the destruction of 100 million chickens for bird flu fears. Farmers said there was no practical need to destroy the chickens, but they were ordered to do so. The Dem’s are pissing in the wind on the prices issue, because they will come down soon. Every single argument they have regarding Trump fizzles out in the end. They scream and holler, and cajole, but in the end they are always wrong.

For all my golf friends out there, like JR, this is a really cool story about TPC Sawgrass, the site of the Players Championship. It’s about a tree that was very famous on the 6th tee box, that technically didn’t interfere with the tee shot, but screwed with players heads. The tree was taken down a while back, and now, they have replaced it with another tree to recapture that same effect on the hole. Very cool story and video.

I am interested in seeing how the QB room shakes out this season, and I think we’ll see some movement soon. There is no doubt McCarthy has excellent arm talent, but it will be a couple years before he “gets there” in being able to function autonomously on the field. He needs some folks in that QB room to help him succeed, andyes, mentor him. Josh McCowan can do a lot for sure, but we need some guys that be a unit, support each other, and help McCarthy develop and grow.

Wonder if Gardner Minshew is one of those guys?

I’m thinking the same thing. Jones and Mullens walking. Jones is smart to do so – he’s got a 60/40 shot of being the starter in Indy by year’s end with the uneven, uninspiring play of Richardson. Minshew is a vet who makes sense as QB2 here.

The offense is now going into its fourth year under KOC. When was the last time we had an offense that mature? This is the advantage any QB will have this year. KOC has made his mistakes, found his answers, and adjusted his scheme each year to make it better. A new OC every year is always a bad thing, so I see the offense being solid this year, regardless of who is under center.

I said here many times that Darnold has a lot of talent. He’s a big strong athlete, and if he knows where to go with the ball, and has some protection, he can absolutely get it done. Where he struggles is in press man, and CB’s sitting on routes, that force him to move from the primary receiver to another guy. Aggressive defenses get into Darnold’s head.

I used to gamble more often. I preferred playing Poker to anything else, and used to spend my lunch hour at the track in Shakopee playing limit hold ’em.

Two things about that. Limit hold ’em is a game that you can win long term, as long as there are bad players at the table. It was a decent hourly win rate for me (2x the big blind average) .

And second, in order to win at poker, you have to spend time with losers. Literally. Angry people that are bad at math. It wore on me and stopped being fun.

If I gamble now, I know I am throwing money away, and usually on sports, and not a lot. Lost $150 last season on Underdog betting parlays on specific players.

Slot machines are depressing to watch. Blackjack is decent enough since you can play conservatively and your money may last a bit longer.
Counting cards works, but gave me a headache.

It is a beatable game. When I played NLHE, I would evaluate the table and if I could not find the obvious weak players, I knew I would lose, and would change tables.
Still, the fact that I needed to hang out with angry and/or stupid people in order to profit, killed the fun for me. I would still probably play hold ’em tourneys or single table sit n go’s if in a casino. Otherwise, playing blackjack or sports betting was the thing to do for free drinks.

Online poker was fun in it’s early heyday, before the nanobots and cheating was widespread. 2000-2007 was fun and a bit profitable for me.

JJ McCarthy, or Aaron Jones?

Meh, not much of a hot this year and basically just posts the dead money they would have incurred by not signing him.

Ditto.
Way too much money for a guy his age and hurt virtually every game.
I know he started all 17, but he didn’t finish like 5 games last year.

I think the dead hit would have been close to $6 mill if they didn’t sign him so it’s a wash this year and they just push out the dead hit to next year. Kind of a no lose deal. They have a good option and can pick one if the right one is there in the draft but now they aren’t forced into over drafting the wrong one.

Like Dalvin Cook, Aaron Jones should only be played fulltime like the last four games of the year. Those guys are front loaded. You got to save them if you want their best when it counts.

Its going to look better when they draft a RB to pair with him. His cap hits are drops in the bucket its not as bad as the numbers suggest. You’ll recover from price tag shock soon enough.

He DID put up 1500 yards from scrimmage though……but only 7 TDs.

He was a beast picking up the blitz, too. Saved Darnold on many occasions.

Unless he regresses considerably, he fills the RB1 spot again, letting us take a flyer on a late-round pick this year, and target a replacement in 2026.

I didn’t think Kwesi could outdo last years free agency. But, it looks like he is going to, the true test will be when the season starts.

Agreed.
I am still in a bit of shock.

I know this is just “super early roster building” and all, but the most glaring and obvious need has been addressed aggressively. That feels so strange. Reminds me of exactly how terrible Rick was as a GM, and how terribad the Kirko initial signing was, and how his first extension was even worse. Overpaying for an average QB should have gotten Rick fired in 2019.

For now, this is so much fun.

Vikes coulda had a new coaching staff and Lamar Jackson and added some beef at the end of 2019 and Choose to double down on the lunacy. The garbage that was 2020-2023 is what you get when you do that.

I did not go last year. Not a Sam believer. Felt just exactly like Keenum, and the result in the playoffs was expected.

This season I will probably go to at least one game, as long as JJ is starting.

I will warn people here ahead of time, since I am a US Bank jinx.
