Harrison Smith

Happy Thorsday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion! Every day you can join us for the latest Minnesota Vikings news, lots of Minnesota Vikings talk, also NFL news and updates, and most anything else you may have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

The Vikings front office continued their work in free agency yesterday. They signed all the guys they legally tampered with prior to free agency, then they signed another DB, Tavierre Thomas. Thomas is a slot corner and a special teams star. Late last night, the team worked out a deal with safety Harrison Smith, making it possible for him to come back for a 14th season in Minnesota. I was concerned that they may have to cut him, as I knew they weren’t going to pay him $26 million next year, which was going to become guaranteed on Saturday if they didn’t get a new deal done. Harrison Smith has been my favorite current Viking basically since he became a Viking. He’s a smart player, isn’t flashy & doesn’t celebrate, just does his job. Quiet & lethal, I love that style of player. I’m glad he’s back, I hope he finally gets a Super Bowl ring this season.

Vikings News

From Fox News, Brett Favre urged Aaron Rodgers to sign with Minnesota, saying it’s a ‘good place to win’.

Here’s Rich Eisen talking about Brett Favre pushing Aaron Rodgers to sign with the Vikings, from Yahoo Sports. There’s sure a lot of chatter out there about Rodgers coming to Minnesota. I just don’t see the dude going anywhere to be a backup, I think he’d retire before doing that. You never know.

NFL News

Keep up with all the latest free agency news from around the league, courtesy of CBS Sports.

The Rams released Cooper Kupp after being unable to trade the WR, per ESPN.

At NFL.com’s news roundup, Russell Wilson is visiting the Browns and Giants, and Mike Williams is returning to the Chargers on a one-year deal.

Another fan favorite is playing another year, just not here.

Media Selection

Here’s a new one from AJ & Hecklefish over at the Why Files, this is one of my favorite channels on YouTube. Enjoy!

Who listens to anything that guy says? He’s a legend in his own mind. Vikings roster is better with the signing of Hargrave, Allen, Kelly, and Fries. Two solid Defensive line players, and two solid offensive line players. There is more work needed, especially in the QB room, but the defense got better, and the offense got better.

Above average grades from PFF across the board last year, 69.8 overall, 66.4 pass blocking and 68.9 run blocking over 361 offensive snaps, including five starts, four in place of Luke Goedeke (at RT, I believe) and one in place of Tristan Wirfs, I assume at LT. And six years younger than the man he’s replacing, David Quessenberry, who after a nice 2023 season for us, graded out below average across the board in 2024, 58.3 overall, 54.8 pass blocking and 57.9 run blocking’

Things came up down the stretch and I will be logging about 52 (but getting paid for 48), I told all of my staff that while you are on part time status try to avoid putting in extra hours….and then I went and did it myself. I will have to plan better.

The burnout from working at the bar on weekends has been fading since stepping down on New Years. In that time I also had quit making cocktails at home, mostly because my bar stock has dwindled to one spirit at a time to none at all so it was hard to make anything with out commiting to a full restock. The itch to make and try new things is coming back, and the weather is warming up, so a full restock is probably on the horizon. Specifically rums. Kind of sad and ironic how the job sucked all the joy out of cocktails itself that I didnt even want to make anything at home. Looking forward to trying new things on the deck on a warm day.

That was the biggest thing preventing me from going to see my mom when she drove through the side of a building, and making my sister do all the work of moving her out of her condo into a senior living centre. I could have applied for an emergency exemption to enter Canada, but I just ran the scenario of acquiring COVID before I got back to the US, and being forced to check into some dump hotel designated as a COVID quarantine centre, not allowed to leave my room at any time, having to eat whatever crap takeout they would deliver to my room, and getting to pay exorbitant amounts of money for the pleasure.

The reason they ask (at least in my experience), is that they would put a mask on you and probably not have you loiter around the waiting room infecting others…or if that is the reason you are there, they would send you to a respiratory illness appointment, usually at same day care where they are better equipped to diagnose and treat you.

Have you been in contact with anybody who has tested positive with Covid?
Have you traveled outside the country over the last two weeks?

They do have signs that say if you are coughing to wear a mask. Ok. That makes sense.

The covid requirement questions do not.
I answer no to all of them.
Why put myself at risk of being reported to the health department or something.

Although my internist still wears this Darth Vader style mask, which I tease him about, “(my wife) and I got really sick with COVID so I do everything to not catch it”. Funny part of that is that several people I know complain they can’t understand him when he explains the treatment plan, when I ask if they asked him to repeat himself they say no, I thought it would piss him off. Heh heh. Guess I can understand him cuz I know the fancy words. Oh, you say I have maiesiophilia?

Stupid Rodgers. I don’t see any end to this in sight. You know this guy is going to draw this crap out.

I think the Vikes would have signed Darnold if they didn’t have faith in JJ. I think they also would not have been in on Daniel Jones if the plan was to go for Rodgers.

But what scares me is that they haven’t signed a QB2 yet. And have they given Rodgers a flat “no”?

I just don’t see Rodgers doing better than JJ. It would be so hard to cheer for the team if led by Rodgers compared to JJ. It’d delay JJ’s development another year. It would undo the rookie QB contract plan. If Rodgers flops, then living in WI will be a nightmare (more than it already is 🙂 ).

My guess is they have their eyes on somebody currently in another team that they expect to get cut. Somebody like a Levis. Plus it really doesn’t matter since they plan to play JJ. Last year it was more important since they didn’t know if they would get their guy in the draft or if he would be ready to play.

The failed physical designation was created to ensure that players who sustain major injuries retain some income after they are released. This provides some protection for players who may struggle to get a new contract before the season.

Minshew qualified for this designation because he sustained a season-ending broken collarbone in Week 11 against the Denver Broncos. Before the injury, Minshew had started in nine games for the Raiders, despite being briefly benched in favor of Aidan O’Connell. Minshew was under contract for one more season with $3.16 million in salary guarantees for 2025.

Typical recovery time from an injury like this is 6-12 weeks, but I broke my collar bone and it bothered me far longer than that. Maybe Minshew is still a few months away from being NFL ready.

If he signed today, he would need to start studying today to be remotely able to run KOC’s scheme by August or September. It takes a couple seasons in any system to run it seamlessly. That said, the skill players know the offense like the back of their hand now, and that will make it much easier. The QB has to know every detail of the offense, and every single players role and responsibility on every play. Not just what he is supposed to do. That takes a lot of work. If he doesn’t have to worry about that so much, because the players are fully immersed, and practiced in the scheme, it takes a huge load off the QB’s shoulders.

Tom P:

“The likely scenario now is that the Vikings will roll with last year’s first round draft pick J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback in 2025. I would anticipate they’re going to continue to pursue a veteran, but this will be a backup situation. I do not expect it to be Aaron Rodgers. Look for J.J. McCarthy, barring something unforeseen, to be the Vikings’ starting quarterback in 2025.”

Mike G:

According to Mike Garafolo, the New York Giants have had “good conversations” with Aaron Rodgers. The club reportedly believes pairing the veteran quarterback with wide receiver Malik Nabers could significantly improve their offense.

Speaking of drinking, I am now drinking 3/4 a gallon to 1 gallon of liquid every day, mostly water. It has helped with some issues.

Turns out 125 ounces is the recommended amount for men anyway, and 128 ounces in a gallon.

So I’m actually still barely or under the recommended amount.

That is a lot of water. I really have to force it down. I drink the bulk of it in the morning, though. I could spread it out more.

I see you were talking about getting bees the other day.

Do it!

I know a couple of guys that raise bees. It looks pretty fun and laid back. They basically just throw the hives out, let the bees do their thing and then get the honey.

They put a bunch of hives out by our farm, and I would walk out and visit them a lot. The bees were super mellow. I would stand about a foot from the hives and watch them go in and out with no worries.

It was really hot and dry that summer, and the bees would fly to our farm to get water from the five gallon bucket our dog drinks from.

They could actually drain it quite a bit in a day. I reckon the bees took about six inches of water from it a day.

So you might have to put out a water source if it is hot and dry and they don’t have one close by.

Thanks for the encouragement! Bees are very cool.

I called a local beekeeper and he is going to let me tag along on hive checks a couple of times this spring.

You can really go down the rabbit hole watching yt videos on the subject. I think the minimalist approach makes sense…obviously I am just in it for the bees and honey is only secondary. Common sense stuff for a beginner like sourcing local nucs (so the bees are of genetic stock used to the climate), spacing hives to limit drift, allowing some brood formation so if varroa gets out of hand they will swarm early vs treating for varroa, etc.

I would set them down in the trees next to the creek. I have seen wild hives in the trunks of old cottonwoods down there…although ftmp the wild hives tend to be closer to the river where there are more wildflowers.

I might have to try sowing some wildflower seed along the creek bed this year.

Anyhow, I am excited to visit with the local commercial guy. I mentioned to my wife that I might get a bee suit rather than going the whole long sleeves and pants route and got the ol “hobby of the month” eye roll. By the same token she loves honey.

Wrenage
Reply to  MT Viking
13 March 2025 9:48 am

Yeah, you need some basics.

Most of the pollen the bees got from around here was clover and alfalfa.

The one family I know that raises bees is from church, and they actually make their living doing it, so they know all the ins and outs.

They make all kinds of products from the honey, like chapstick and stuff. They even make a honey soda now, but I have not tried it.

I hope they put some more hives by the farm this year. It was really relaxing to just sit and watch the bees do their thing.

Calculating your food would give you another 20 oz or so of fluid putting you well over the ‘recommended’ and allow you to cut back a little on the guzzling. Reducing your risk of OverHydration.

Also drinking water too fast can cause your system to be flushed of electrolytes and can actually lead to dehydration. I have had it happen, couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. I was achy and light headed and had all of the symptoms of dehydration, but I was drinking a lot of water.

Went to the doctor and they ran some tests and realized I was dehydrated. Ran a couple bags of saline and I was good to go.
