Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

We had our first baseball game of the season last night, and it was an absolute blast. The kids played great, despite only having had one official practice and one makeshift practice so far. We have a really good group of kids, coaches, and parents this year; it’s going to be a really fun year. We won the game, which isn’t overly important, but it adds to the fun.

This will be brief, we just rolled into Grand Forks at midnight, and we’re ready for bed.

Vikings News

From Fox 9, Justin Jefferson attended team OTAs, developing rapport with his new QB, and showing why he’s a team captain.

\Vikings.com has 3 takeaways from team OTAs.

NFL News

Caleb Williams is trying to undo some bad PR and now insists he wants to be in Chicago, more from NFL.com. You’ll recall the rumor that he tried to avoid going to Chicago and wanted to go to the Vikings prior to the draft, which I’m sure doesn’t endear him to the Chicago fan base.

Tyreek Hill is looking to prove himself after a disappointing 2024, from NFL.com.

CBS Sports looks at highlights of OTAs from around the league, including an impressive showing by Shedeur Sanders.

Media Selection

Someone mentioned this yesterday, it’s Shawn Ryan interviewing Dave Mustain. I still haven’t settled in to watch the whole thing, but I plan to. Here’s one clip. Enjoy!

  • Keep the NSFW language/pictures to a minimum. We don’t want anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • To summarize, behave like adults. Treat each other with respect, and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something, please do. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.

Watching some random sports on the InterWebThingie.

England just went up on Portugal 6-0 in Women Soccer.
Watching soccer doesn’t make you gay if it is women’s soccer right?
I mean they are fit and wearing tight shorts after all.

Sam said some nice things recently about his time with the Vikings.

“It was just a special team to be a part of. Even from the beginning, you know, people not necessarily thinking we’re gonna be a great team, and for us to just be able to [win 14 games].”

Found the WH briefing from the Oval Office somewhat sad today. Elon’s last day officially working for the government.
Perhaps the most brilliant, innovative man of our time comes to Washington to take on the beast of government. On one hand, wouldn’t say it was a failure, but results are certainly underwhelming.
And the way he was personally attacked is beyond shameful. Think when a similar opportunity happens in the future there will be lots of volunteers.
Hate the idea, but may have to buy an electric car of his as a sort of gratitude.

The Democruds are celebrating DOGE failing to reach the ‘goal’ of $1 or 2 billon dollars.
They are the ones to slow down the cutting with Lawfare and fighting every step of the way. So I guess they are calling it a will.
Of course they were Pro-Cuts until DJT/Musk were working to get it done.

True. But I see this as an opportunity lost. A brilliant man, the WH, and both houses of Congress and still couldn’t make much progress.
Evecutive Orders can be challenged. Laws passed by Congress are strong. But with a razor slim majority in the House, every single Republican needed to be completely committed to make this happen. We didn’t have that.

You can look at as ‘glass 1/2 empty’ if you want.

They cut billions, the cabinet secretaries are continuing to cut, the House/Senate are still working on the BBB, even once that is done does not mean that reform is over.
We didn’t get into this mess suddenly and it will take some time to get out of it. Steps forward to fix things are still a positive even if they are not as big of steps as we would like.

He found 175 billion of waste – great. Congress put 9 billion in the BBB. Seems a little light to me.
After Musk leaves town, we’ll see the size of appetite for cutting our Congress has to codify into law all the remaining savings.
If the glass gets to ‘1/2 full’ I’ll be stunned.

They want to push it off until mid terms so they can run on “you have to elect the Republicans so we can put all these cuts into law”, not realizing if they don’t start acting then they are going to get primary’d or Republicans just aren’t going to show.

That’s why they needed to act. If you are seriously going to cut $100 billion of waste from Medicaid, you are going to get killed politically one way or the other. Do it quickly and get it behind you.

Part of it is the access to news now and what stories get pushed to push the narrative. Overall, it’s felt like the fire seasons haven’t been as bad out here the last few years. A big part of the problem is also the mismanagement of the forests for the last 100-150 years. Too many decades of fire suppression no matter what, no logging, etc. The bark beetle is definitely hurting things in many parts of the west as well.

I highly doubt Climate Change is a valid reason.

As Mike Flannigan points out, “Forest fires are caused by two things: lightning and people.” Canada has averaged over 7000 forest fires per year since 1990. [13] More than half are caused by lightning, so a near-doubling of lightning strikes could push us to almost 9,000 fires per year by the end of the century.

F*** superstitions! Hug that Clarence Campbell trophy.

Oilers stepped up last night and put away the Stars 6-3 to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals second year in a row against the very same foe that beat them in 7 last year, the Florida Panthers…game 1 in Edmonton on Wednesday.

This is a special team, held Dallas to three shots in the third period in two consecutive games to hold the lead. Do they have what it takes to beat the Panthers? Maybe. Rare in the post expansion league for the same two teams to meet in consecutive years, rarer still for the same team to win both times.

I’ll say what has been working for me so far…Florida is a tough and deep team. I don’t know if the Oilers have what it takes to take the Cup. I wouldn’t bet on the Oilers to win the series.

That being said…

It’s how they display it on the replays, even on the American broadcast.

It’s really easy to convert, though. First of all find a nice smooth ice rink and put on a pair of freshly sharpened skates. Taking baby steps, work on your technique for approximately 200 hours until you are able to confidently skate at speed in a straight line. Calculate your speed by the sound of the wind whistling in your ears and hair blowing back.

Now multiply that speed by three, add in hockey gear, put a stick in your hands, scuff up the ice surface, chase down a puck, and deal with a top 6 defenseman trying to hook and pry at you from behind with his stick, including trying to lift your stick. Once you have that down, all you have to do is flip the puck from your backhand to forehand to push it into the net between the pad of the goaltender and the goalpost…it would also be a good idea to not skate into the goalpost or crash head first into the end boards.

I have been thinking about him and what my opinions are of him and what job he’s doing.
Ultimately the draft falls on his shoulders, but he relies heavily (as he should) on all his scouts and coaches on players in the draft. unless he goes against what they all want, it’s not like HE is the only one scouting and drafting….

But he has also done a phenomenal job of turning the organization around in all facets.

He can’t blame the trades he made in his first draft on scouts.
He can blame the players he picked on them, sure.

He has learned from that initial disaster and has turned the franchise into a perennial contender. He hired KOC and made the team stronger, deeper, more complete and with a bright future.

KAM gets the players and sets the table for KOC.
Once he has was the players it is on KOC to get results.
KAM turned the ship around and has given KOC a very good team.
KOC has had some success with a team going thru a ‘Competitive Rebuild’. Now we will see what he can do with a solid/deep team.

KAM can’t be blamed for KCs injury or for all the teams turnovers in year 2.

Tough business. First year they put together a 13 win season with bubble gum and no defense. Second year Cousins got hurt just as team was getting it’s act together. Last year, played a poor playoff game – it happens.

I just don’t think the Vikings can be called perennial contenders. Yet.

SCOTUS is all we have. If they allow the lower courts to tie DJT hands then I don’t know what the fix is. Nothing will ever get accomplished since both sides can find friendly judges to rule against doing anything.
Maybe the voters will vote in enough Reps willing to pass laws that change the rules but that would be a long term fix.

Indeed – what is needed and what is possible is the issue.
As we all know entitlements which exploded under Obama and Biden is the problem. Medicaid misuse is a huge problem but for whatever reason which I don’t understand, there was a small group of reps from rural red states that claimed with medicaid cuts their small rural hospitals would have to close. Those votes were needed to pass the bill.
And no one even addressed that we have over 50 million people on food stamps. That’s ridiculous.
And lastly, DOD has more waste than any federal department, yet they increased defense spending with no mandates for any kind of expense cutting.

Someone should ask – as one of the richest countries in the world with so many opportunities for employment, why do we have so many people on government funded medical programs and in need of food stamps?
As the economy grows and gets even stronger, the % of people on these programs is not decreasing but growing larger. There is a HUGE structural problem.

From the Medicaid standpoint…here is my unvarnished and uninformed opinion as it relates to my specific area of medicine.

I see it every day…people in their 20’s and 30’s show up on a Tuesday afternoon in the ED with a complaint like, “headache intermittently x 2months, significant weight loss/gain, intermittent nausea/vomiting or diarrhea.” These aren’t what I consider ED cases but I don’t run the ED, I am part of an ancillary arm (imaging) which is closely tied to the average ED encounter. The vast majority of these specific cases of young people with chronic complaints are covered by Medicaid. It is essentially an outpatient visit for which they have no financial responsibility. They have no motivation to make an appointment with primary care when they can just hit the ED and be seen without an appointment.

In terms of what to do with these patients, it is really up to the provider to decide what is an acceptable exam (required by law) prior to discharge from the ED. The vast majority of these encounters generate imaging.

The same problem occurs in Canada. It is to this day a common med school interview question, “To alleviate overcrowding in the ED, and discourage overutilization of emergency services, it has been proposed to require a $20 copay for all visits to the ED. Discuss the pros and cons of this proposal in your own words.”

Prior to the Medicaid expansion, the hospitals got to eat the cost of care for a fair amount of these patients. Post Medicaid expansion, they get paid for at least a significant portion of the cost of care.

Every cross sectional exam (say CT head, CT neck, CT chest/abdomen/pelvis), generates a technical and professional charge. The technical charge pays for the technologist time and scanner. Plus if the scans uncover significant pathology you can upcode the encounter fee, say for appendicitis or cancer.

Yesterday I had 16 CT CAP just here at my home facility, not counting the remote sites I read for. I bet a significant number were Medicaid.

You can see why rural hospitals want to keep expansion in place. More exams means more need for technologists means higher overhead.

TLDR,
So jumping to the conclusion ‘You can see why rural hospitals want to keep expansion in place. More exams means more need for technologists means higher overhead.’

Really wish Hyman hadn’t gone down last game with the shoulder injury. Against a team like Florida you need someone aggressive on the forecheck, deliver hits, wear down the defensemen against the back boards. Plus he could stand in front of the crease on the PP and score points. Hard to replace a guy like that.

If they put away Dallas, Florida is going to be every bit as tough as last year. Don’t like our chances.

At some point the US will have to bite the bullet and make some tough choices. That is harder to do when opponents point out each and every possible negative.

I’ve gotten antibiotics for my kids when they had an ear infection or pink eye, my wife was able to change a prescription when she had a bad reaction to one and it all costs me nothing, I don’t have to leave the house and it’s usually way quicker than going to the doctor. Slightly different, in the business world we handled this differently. For a period of time. we were having a rash of emergency room visits and our health care costs were rising rapidly. So, we put a $500 co-pay for those visits and most all the visits that could be handled thru regular doctor appointments quickly vanished.

I got to sample a small piece of a Twinkie for the one and only time in my life at about age 8.
