Happy Hump Day, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion! Every day you can join us for the latest Minnesota Vikings news, lots of Minnesota Vikings talk, also NFL news and updates, and most anything else you may have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

4 long weeks until training camp. The good news is, no Vikings are in the news currently so we can be bored. In the interim, the new season of Quarterbacks will be on Netflix soon, and we can watch that to see a couple good QB’s during last season. Oh, Kirk is in the show as well.

Other than collusion to stop guaranteeing contracts, I did not see any major stories to follow. Normal idiots saying idiot things until the season starts.

We lived in the ‘High Desert’ in SoCal.
So we traded better state and local government for better weather when we moved here.
A little bit colder winters for summers that are not brutally hot.

Article is a little long but I found it interesting. I think, from an organizational perspective, we are in for sustained high level competitiveness in the NFL. Lombardi here we come.

Well, not exactly. Every team is NOT heavily over the cap to the extent we are, so no, not every team deals with this kind of cap issue “every year”. In fact well over half the teams in the league are in excellent to very good shape cap wise next year. We will be forced to actually let guys go, and replace them with cheaper guys.

The Vikings are currently last in the league with minus $59M in space, compared to the Chargers who are plus $118M in cap space.

Well Surly, let me add some context here, if you don’t mind.

Monday’s theme is adjustment. Mornings begin early, between 6 and 8 a.m. for most teams, and involve a weightlifting session designed to reduce soreness from the prior day and promote flexibility for the tough week ahead.

Players also receive therapeutic intervention and treatment for injuries. Weight and therapy sessions are followed by a team breakfast, then grueling team meetings, tape review, and breakout meetings for groups like special teams, linemen, and offense.

Tuesdays are an NFL-wide “day off” as mandated by the NFL Players Association. Of course, this doesn’t mean you’ll find top-tier athletes taking it easy. Many NFL stars use Tuesday as an extra practice day. They work on conditioning, skill-building, or by studying game film.

Wednesday marks a pivotal point in the week for most teams. By mid-week, coaches will have an idea of what the team did wrong the prior Sunday as well as what the team needs to do against its upcoming opponent. Because of this, Wednesday is typically the longest day of the week. It’s known as install day spent learning a new playbook for the coming week.

Thursday looks a lot like Wednesday as in-depth practices continue. The game plan for the coming week is revised and fine-tuned. Each area of focus has meetings to further develop game-day strategy. Coaches also use this time to tweak the upcoming playbook based on information from scouts, film, and progress on the field.

Friday is the final day to refine the team’s offensive and defensive sets. It’s also typically a short day, with practices and meetings held until the early afternoon only. This is the final chance for players to show they’ve mastered the playbook before a game.

Saturdays look different depending on whether the game is at home or away. If the game is at home, the early part of the day involves a walk-through practice, meaning players train at half speed.

The offense and defense will make any last-minute adjustments to scenarios specific to the team they will play. If the game is away, most of Saturday is spent traveling. Then, a sit-down team meeting takes place before dinner and curfew at the hotel later that night.

This is how the typical NFL work week is executed across the league.

Well again you actually leave out context, or as Paul Harvey says, “The Rest of the Story”.

Cousins invests many dozens of hours of personal time studying film, reviewing his personal notes and libraries he’s built on every team he’s faced, working on his body, and coordinating with coaches after hours. You give him no credit for those hours that far exceed the 3 to 4 hours some athletes invest on Tuesdays.

You pretend like every great player isn’t doing that on the other 6 days of the week. If everybody is equal the other 6 days and one does work on Tuesday and another doesn’t, one is ahead of the other. I didn’t single out any player, you did by the way. There are lots of players that feel that total rest is a good thing, but the greats don’t take time off until the offseason and even then it is limited.

You know if I had been inclined I would have answered the original ‘works on Tuesday’ differently.
I would have said – I don’t care if JJ works on Tuesday, or even Wednesday for that matter, as long as he truly “works” on Sundays.
But then again, I’m a Peter Drucker guy. We don’t evaluate ‘effort’, we evaluate ‘performance.’

There is that JR. And level of experience might just be a consideration. Cousins was a starter for 10 years in the NFL, after backing up Griffin in Washington for his first three years. He’s seen it all. McCarthy has yet to set foot on an NFL field against a real NFL defense. The gap between the two is enormous. He better be working 24/7 right now.

JRobert
JRobert

That is true to a point. First overall think it is a slippery slope getting into the “effort” evaluation business.
Second, played ball once with two of the best hitters I have ever seen. One was a student of hitting – lots of batting practice, studied tendencies of all the pitchers. H e could hit.
The other, hardly practiced and never looked at a scouting report of a pitcher. Chased girls and drank beer. A great hitter too.
Very different ‘effort’ levels.

Not necessarily true. There is no authoritative data source that proves that adage, and plenty of commentary from athletes to counter it. Jack Nicklaus said in his book “Golf My Way” that he didn’t practice much during the season. He said if he had a bad ball striking round, he would go to the range just long enough to figure out what was wrong, then go home. He said he didn’t want to waste the good stuff on the range. Arguably the greatest golfer of all time, and he didn’t waste time hitting thousands of balls on the range.

It’s tough, but I don’t know that I’d call it a sport. Tiger is an athlete, but not because he golfs. He was great at golf because he had a different mental acuity than any other human on the planet and was also an obsessed athlete. I’d say the same about NASCAR drivers. I love NASCAR, but I won’t call it a sport, but most of the best drivers are athletes.

The Collusion story forgets one aspect of how the NFL operates.
Salary Cap.

If all players got fully guaranteed contracts, then teams wouldn’t have the cap space to sign other players. It would drastically change teams rosters and some players might get the short end of the stick while others get big dollars.

It’s not some static situation where it’s great that players all get guaranteed contracts.

Then of course, the complaints of the lowly paid guaranteed NFL players would still be how greedy the NFL is.

The pie is only so big.

The city of New York will be going broke under socialist leadership. They claim they will pay for the freebies they’re promising by taxing the rich. Good luck with that. The rich will leave, the city will collapse, and the people who voted for this sham will get what they deserve.
