Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

This is the real test of the season for me. My mother (rip) always said it was a successful Vikings season if the team could beat the Packers at least once. I have to agree with that. I am hoping JJ suddenly gets out of his head and just plays ball, otherwise this could be a rough game.

Thanksgiving is almost here. I bought the turkey for the smoker, and some winter lager, and I am looking forward to spending time with family and watching football, and of course, the food coma. Since we are close enough for the holiday, here is a poll/question for everyone. What is the best and worst Thanksgiving food? I really enjoy most Thanksgiving foods, but for me, pecan pie is the best, and sweet potato thing with marshmallows is the worst. Only thing worse than that is if someone decides that brussel sprouts are needed.

Lefse gets honorable mention as a holiday-only food that is amazing. Of course, you add butter and sugar to just about anything and it will taste great.

Went and played 9 holes this morning, and had a great time with a couple of guys down here for the winter. Older guys from Pennsylvania, who come down to Florida every year from the end of November, to the end of February. Their kids (married to each other) live here so it’s all the Holidays with the family, and lots of golf for them.

I shot 40 with two three putt bogeys, and two “normal” bogeys. We all hit the ball pretty well, and it was a really fun time. The first hole was a dogleg right around a lake. It plays about 225 yards as the crow flies from the tee, so lots of guys go for it over the lake. I teed off first and hit a hybrid about 160 yards, right down the middle of the somewhat narrow fairway (swamp and water on the left, lake on the right). These guys both pull out their drivers. They both commenced to hitting a couple of balls each in the lake, before coming back, grabbing and iron, and playing the hole from the fairway. They laughed about it though, so I knew it was going to be a good day.

Ready for some football now. Obviously this is a very big game for us. Hoping we can pull out a great defensive effort against Love and the offense, and we can score at least 21 points. Can we win 21-17?

21-17 works…..

Wondering how they’ll attempt to neutralize Parsons – guy has free rein to lineup anywhere. He’s a problem and can wreck the game on any snap.

That said….. last year we put the wood on them early and held on to win by our teeth. Different team last year, most importantly different trigger man taking snaps and early returns have been rough save for some big play flashes and occasional displays of moxie.

I’m not sold on Love. I think he’s a hospital ball specialist that’ll give a defensive 2/3 chances a game for takeaways. We desperately need to start producing turnovers. Feels like a good opportunity to do that today.

I don’t care if it’s sexy as long as it’s got teeth. Just get the win.

Congratulations on the hitting of the little ball, chasing after it, and then hitting it again until it disappears. This is golf in a nutshell to me, not meant to be disparaging, and I can see how that simple action can be quite enjoyable.

It is. If you wrap it in cheesecloth (or bacon, I’ve done that, too), it protects the skin from charring and holds in the moisture. Best way to eat turkey, IMO, far less dry than it is from the oven.

First time I was in charge of cooking the turkey as a teen I BBQed it.
It was cold and raining, I had to keep adding coals and it took all day.
But it was the best turkey ever, moist and tender. I also did it every year I was in Germany, German neighbors loved it.

My favorite thanksgiving food is a fresh cranberry apple relish my grandmother used to make using a recipe from the old world

The worst is a tie (because I love a tie) between canned cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, they both suck, I’m sure there’s some weirdo out there that puts the cranberry sauce on the pumpkin pie for the ultimate sucktitude.

I don’t much care for turkey, especially white meat but I do love the leftover sandwiches using dark meat. I bust out the meat slicer and thinly slice it, then make sandwiches with cheese, mashed potatoes, stuffing, the turkey, and then dip it in gravy

I love taking the carcass, striping off the meat, adding the dark meat from T-Day Dinner leftovers and building enchiladas with it. The moist, flavor filled dark meat made the best ‘Lades’. Used to get the leftovers from my Mom and my Sister-in-law and make a big batch.
Then boil the bones along with the ‘veggie patter’ leftovers and make turkey soup and eat it with left over dinner rolls.
I could easily eat for a week on T-day leftovers, highlight of my year.

She misread the room. Thought taking an adversarial stance against Trump would make her wildly popular. Of course Trump has a lot of supporters for his common sense policies, like closing the border, deporting illegals, cutting Government, getting rid of fraud, waste, and abuse, trade deals that are fair to the U.S., bringing in millions of new job’s and trillions in new investments, cutting taxes, and of course cleaning up our crime ridden cities. Just to name a few. Can’t oppose Trump and tell folks you’re on their side. That dog won’t hunt. She tried going on talk shows to raise her visibility and increase her popularity. It didn’t work. Trump tried to protect the innocent, but he also called for the files to be released many months ago, when he realized the media really thought he was complicit. Now it’s gonna be all those Dems that are gonna get creamed with this. People who took donations, not really involved with any of the crap Epstein was doing with young girls. Trump didn’t want the mess. He couldn’t stop the Dems from shooting themselves in the foot foot though. They’re just that stupid.

A great 10 days of golf and fishing. Last week i got up early and drove a few hours to our favorite PA state park. I hiked 9 miles out and back to a few of my favorite wild trout streams. Caught 8 trout, 6 over 12 inches, with 2 topping out at 18 inches. At 65 years old,not sure i will be able to do that again.

This week i got out again. About an hour away from us is a nice 36 hole country club, with a beautiful stream going through it. 7 years ago i got permission to fish it “as long as there are no golfers out there”. So wednesday morning, it was 36 degrees and rainy, and i went up there. 16 trout, with most in the 13-15 inch range. Then it cleared up, i drove home and played 18 holes. Gotta love retirement

Sounds like you cleaned out that ‘Golf Course Stream’. It’s trout will need time to recover.

That sounds like a good way to lose an arm, or maybe that’s just gravy and cousins.

My wife said tuna noodle casserole is the Thanksgiving food she least likes. Do people make that for Thanksgiving?

I’ve never seen that for Thanksgiving.

Funny, I haven’t had tuna noodle casserole in years, but you mentioning it kinda makes me want some. Used to think it was pretty good.

‘tuna noodle casserole’

Just call it ‘Hot Dish’ and I am sure some NoDak has brought it to a Thanksgiving somewhere.

Tuna noodle casserole sounds abominable.

Favorite Thanksgiving food?

Easy choice. Love all the traditional foods. My dinner plate will feature: turkey (a pile of white and dark meat) smothered in gravy, a lesser sized yet equally a wood-chipper-stopping portion of Ham with my mother’s amazing ham sauce on the side (RIP Moondoggie)

Green bean casserole ✔️
Mashed potatoes with gravy ✔️
Creamed corn casserole ✔️
Pumkin pie ✔️
Sour cream & raisin pie ✔️

All of the above is amazing…… but the real deal, the best part of the holiday, will be about 230 Friday afternoon – with any luck right around the time my Huskers are closing out a long awaited victory over HATED Iowa – I’ll be making a cold turkey sammich – Fresh homemade bread, Dukes mayo, salt & pepper and equal layers of white and dark meat. This sandwich would make Dagwood Bumstead proud – and I’ll devour every damn bit (save for a few bites for Goose)….

Shortly after I’ll be pulling my best Al Bundy impression: Sprawled on the couch, fly unzipped, hands in pants…..

25+ years ago I spent a night in a Lincoln, Nebraska detox with Johnny ‘The Jet’ Rodgers – Heisman trophy winner and hero of the ‘71 NU/OU ‘Game Of The Century’.

Lipped off to a cop with a classic George Carlin line ‘you’re a public servant, go get me a glass of water’ outside of a house party in the Russian Bottoms neighborhood.

Cop not amused – but did me a favor as he dumped the bag of mushrooms I had in my pocket on the ground and ground them into the dirt with his boot heel and said ‘It’s your birthday (it wasn’t) so I’m just gonna take you to detox….’

Hit the drunk tank and lo and behold….. there’s ’The Jet’…. Passed out on a bench with his admittance ticket (with his signature) resting on his chest.

That ticket was on my fridge for the longest time until my soon to be ex-wife tossed it when we moved houses, not realizing what it was.

Cool story. I would’ve tried to eat as many of those shrooms as possible before the cop took them. It would’ve made the detox stay a lot more interesting.

Green Bean Casserole I can do without.
Creamed corn casserole is something I can imagine but never heard of before.
Sour Cream & Raisin Pie sounds like some you make and eat on a dare. It could be decent or it could be horribad.

Green bean casserole is ok. What we prefer to do is add hamburger to it which makes it a thousand times better.

For the pool question I agree with GF about sweet potato pie. Like pumpkin but not sweet potato. For the best, that’s tuff. Since I hardly get it most of the year, maybe dressing. But then again, I never get cranberries except at Thanksgiving, so they’re right up there too.

Mornin JR. I like pretty much all the traditional Thanksgiving dishes, but not a big fan of the giblets.. My wife makes an incredible stuffing dish that I love, so that is probably my favorite.
