Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

Man, only two more days until we fly to Florida. It’s supposed to be below zero here when we fly out on Saturday morning, and it’s supposed to be in the 70s Saturday afternoon when we land. I’ve never been to St. Augustine, the oldest city in the United States, and we’re planning to get over there. I see the Jaguars are playing the Jets on Sunday, and tickets are CHEAP, we’re keeping that open as an option.

I’m looking forward to seeing whether the offense can put up another good performance Sunday night against the Cowboys. I know the chances of making the playoffs are slim, but they can at least build some confidence by finishing the year on a roll. Shoot for 9-8.

Vikings and NFL News

The initial Vikings vs. Cowboys injury report from Vikings.com.

The Pioneer Press looks at what it would take for the Vikings to make the playoffs.

The Star-Tribune looks at three factors that helped J.J. McCarthy find success against the Commanders.

The NFL made some schedule changes, details from NBC Sports.

Phillip Rivers isn’t just taking Daniel Jones’ job, he’s also taking his jersey number, per CBS Sports.

NFL.com has a league-wide NFL week 15 injury report.

Have to admit, I thought the Bucs would win by double digits. Very surprised that the Falcons overcame 19 penalties, dropped TD passes, and fumbling the ball on their own 25 to win. Oh yeah, 3rd and 28 with no timeouts and under a minute to play.

So Atlanta scored to close to 28-20 but then went for 2. Why??
Then KC gets upset at the WR who runs the wrong route.
28-20 with about 10m left.

I think TB will be much better in the second half. They showed they could run the ball so I expect they’ll go to that a little more. Grind it out, and wear the Falcons defense down.

This video demonstrates what I’ve known about defenses vs offensive passing schemes, and how reads and progressions work for decades. Warner talks a lot about finding the defenders in conflict, timing of routes, and breaking down how the same play works (or doesn’t) against various defensive configurations. I personally love this discussion. It shows for a single play, how many permutations and reads there are, and when you understand there may be 45 to 50 pass plays in a given game plan, knowing all the variations on all those plays, then being able to see it, know it, and throw it without taking 25 seconds to do it, is a skillset that takes a lot of time to develop.

Regarding KOC’s comments about the hash marks making a huge difference for a college QB becoming an NFL QB.

Last I checked, the college field and the NFL field both were 160 feet wide and 100 yards long. Skill players can line up as wide as you want, or as close to the front linemen as you want, and they all can run anywhere the play calls for them to run, so hash mark width should be a non-factor, or a pathetically small factor.

The “middle” of the field is arbitrary – doesn’t have to be defined by the hash marks.

JacksonVike
Reply to  Northwoods

It is somewhat defined by the hashmarks, because the hashmarks establish where the pocket is.

Northwoods
Reply to  JacksonVike
11 December 2025 12:22 pm

Does that not mean an NFL field is better for a QB because it is easier to get out of the pocket and throw the ball away without being flagged for grounding?

Edit – whoops, doesn’t the position of the Tackles determine where the pocket is?

JacksonVike
Reply to  Northwoods
11 December 2025 12:27 pm

The pocket is the same size, but in the NFL the pocket is always closer to the center of the field. The strong side is larger and the weak side is smaller, on a college football field.

I don’t know how much of a difference that would make on a QB. I guess if you’re not used to the wideout on the weak side being 18′ further away in the NFL compared to college, the receiver would take longer to get to the “middle” of the field. This could mess up your thought process for which progression you should go through.

JacksonVike
Reply to  JacksonVike
11 December 2025 12:37 pm

Just spit balling here; in college, if you’re on the left hash, you have a receiver out wide on the left and right and a receiver in the slot to the right, your progression may be LSR, if the left receiver and slot receiver are running crossing routes, because the receiver to the left is going to get to “middle” first. Those same routes in the NFL would likely be SLR, because the Slot receiver is going to get to the “middle” first.

Actually when they place the ball on a hashmark in college, let’s say the right hashmark, the area to left is a much wider area, and distorts the center of the defense, more than in the NFL. In the NFL the hashmarks are much closer together, so that effect is very much lessened.

Racist, or ‘raucous?’

“Jingle Bells” was originally a secular winter “sleighing song” called “One Horse Open Sleigh,” written by James Lord Pierpont in the 1850s, inspired by New England sleigh races, and wasn’t intended for Christmas, often featuring slightly risqué lyrics about unchaperoned rides and drinking, with the bells serving as a functional warning device for horses in the snow. Its association with Christmas grew later, partly due to its adoption into minstrel shows and its cheerful, winter theme, despite its raucous origins.”

Its not that he’s injury prone, its more his line has ACTUALLY been bottom of the league his entire time in the league and gets him killed. Unlike our line which has been average to below average in that same time frame but not bottom of the league.

And it is a catch 22, you cannot pay Burrows the money they are paying him and pay a great offensive line. If I were an NFL QB, I would have my contract set up to take less money, but any difference from market value must be spent on the Oline. So, if I take $10mil below market value, that $10mil needs to be spent on Oline.

The environmental folks have become a cult. Much like any other religion, they WILL NOT accept any data that goes against their belief structure. BUT just like any other religion or cult, that also doesn’t mean everything about them should be dismissed. We should be taking care of our environment, we should be reducing and reusing etc… But these little universal truths that are good have been hijacked for monetary and political power grabs.

The climate change argument though is senseless, and baseless. It discounts and dismisses reality, and the history of the planet over millions of years. We know, the planets actual orbit around the sun is not a perfect circle, and the earths tilt towards the sun varies too. There is scientific data that shows climate will change based on the earths relationship to the sun. That’s what affects the earths climate and temperature. The amount of man-made carbon gas (or “green house gases” as the climate folks referred to them) in our atmosphere, is miniscule. The whole concept is ridiculous, and a total scam. It’s only purpose is to fear monger the populace so Governments can tax citizens more. BTW none of the money they collect from us will have any affect on the climate.

When I was growing up, pollution was terrible. It was real. Bad air quality, and polluted waters. Then we started cleaning that all up. That was real, and it was important. Climate change is a total lie.

Correct and I like I said. It’s just like any other religion or cult. Any data that is against their belief structure will not be tolerated. It’s Dogma over Data rather than Data over Dogma

Ehhhh, kind of. Does CO2 impact temperature –‘ yes. Does it impact long term CLIMATE – not so much.

The bigger problem which will be our downfall is over-populatuon. The big question that i have not seen anyone answer is “how many people can the planet sustain long term?”. Now this is different from the much simpler question we can all answer of – “How many Packer fans can the planet sustain?”

CO2 does not affect temperature in our atmosphere. It makes up .0016 percent of the whole atmosphere, so it isn’t a factor at all.

I don’t buy that argument, but I respect your thoughts on it. Arsenic in water is dangerous at 10 parts per billion, so the percentage is less important than how and why it works.

Think of hitting a golf ball through a tree, The crown of the tree is mostly air, but a few pesky leaves can interfere with the shot and ruin a golf game. CO2 works the same way. (I can go into a more scientific example if needed)

Either way, I do believe we go through these climate trends on a cyclical basis (agreeing with your point on planetary movement). I do not think this current warming is all gloom and doom.

Studied this way back in college with a specific course. Professor said global warming due to human impact was not provable. He said the recent warming was probably more due to changes in the sun than to the earth.

I’ve known for a long time it’s a hoax. Data can be clipped to prove a narrative.

I have searched a long time to find any scientific study quantifying the percent impact man has on the climate. I have not found any. Most articles are based on correlation, not causality

I remember in elementary school having to write reports about the incoming ice age, and the overpopulation crisis. I think I was in 3rd grade, and they had us all convinced that people need to fear russia, that a school desk would stop nuclear fallout, that people should be limited to having 1 child to avoid overpopulation, and plenty of other bullshit.

Schools are indoctrination, not education. Same with most media bullshit.

Damn, got me going again….

Teachers aren’t preaching communism and socialism. Quit it. I am sure there are bad apples just like there are bad cops out there, that doesn’t mean we should defund the police. They can teach about what communism and socialism is just like any world history class can teach about what the different world religions are. But to preach either doesn’t happen for the vast vast majority.

Just think that isn’t true. Many do not teach a full and complete history of our country.
Dealt a lot with my kids education. They could tell me about the good aspects of socialism in Sweden, but were clueless about the American Industrial Revolution.

sigh… Just because you had an experience withy our kids, in your town, at your school… doesn’t mean that’s all of America or even any where near most of America. People make this mistake all the time. They think their small, personal experience extrapolates across the country which just isn’t the case. There are some dumb people in ever profession for sure.

Hardly. My wife is an educator and did a vast amount of review before picking our kid’s schools. And this is talking about the ones that were most ‘objective.’ So, it’s actually our kids had it better than most.
Do you realize how big the school systems are in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon counties are in Virginia. Not to mention DC’s and all the Maryland suburbs. Far larger than entire Western States.

What’s actually crazy about this is… schools aren’t indoctrinating. They aren’t, are the cases of it? Sure, but that’s so few and far between. But what IS happening is pushes to have actual religious indoctrination pushed into the classroom. Yet these people who say things like, “School’s shouldn’t indoctrinate” don’t speak out against that. I am not saying this is you (it could be but I don’t know) but it seems many don’t actually have an issue with schools indoctrinating.

I wasn’t pushing for religion to be taught in school, I was (poorly) trying to point out that a lot of conservative values, like religion, are banned from being taught in school. Whereas, any discussion about transsexuals, socialism, communism etc. can be praised and taught by teachers in schools.

They aren’t banned, not at all, not in the slightest. This is just a false narrative you have bought into. Literally every high school teaches world religions, damn near every high school has a Fellowship of Cristian Athletes, most every team prays before games… the thing is these things need to be student lead. Schools cannot force/push religions, but they also can’t deny religion either if it’s student lead. My town’s high school has a group that meets once a month in the high school cafeteria before school and goes over a bible teaching. All student lead, that’s great and how it should be.

Just asking – what is indoctrinating? And let’s put the religion issue aside (for now).
I used to tell folks if you’re giving a speech or writing a position paper you need to spend 90% of the presentation on the 90% of the important material.
So, let’s take American history and 90 % is pretty darn good, and 10 % some ugly stuff. Yet I know from dealing with my children’s education. 90% of the time the teachers are focusing on the bad parts of our past and the good gets but a modest nod.
Perhaps not indoctrination per se, but certainly and agenda.

You sat in those classes and timed how much time the teacher spent on those things? I doubt it. I imagine part of the issue is kids remember more of those things even if the teacher didn’t spent exuberant amounts of time on it. Because remember, they are kids. So atrocities in our history which there are plenty, stick out and then kids that hadn’t heard these things probably have questions. It doesn’t immediately mean there’s an agenda.

When I was helping coach a high school football team on the rez, I heard a kid one time say he has an upside down American flag in his house with AIM written across it. Man… the HC first started with, isn’t it great you can do that in this free nation and have that freedom speech. Took him back a second because he didn’t react. Then the Coach went off on him because he knew the family and they had lots of veterans in the family and what a slap in the face it is to all them. Then pointed out he lived in government housing and maybe he should move out of the house then if he hated the government so much. Really put the kid in his place… that same teacher teaches some history and some of their tribes history stuff and if you heard SOME of those classes you’d probably think, boy this guy must just hate America and is preaching hate. But other times they are covering the beauty of the country and times of working with the government on tribal sovereignty and such.

Point being unless you are there the whole time, actually documenting the 90/10 ratio you are making HUGE assumptions.

Not really at all.
But here’s a real test. Look at the questions that are now on the ACT Test.
You won’t see a question asking who wrote the Declaration of Independence, but you will have one to name some Native American that got killed in some masacre somewhere.
That is hardly the appropriate balance to me.
Do you have kids? If you help them with homework you get a good idea of what they are being taught.
