Happy Tuesday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics! Join us as we discuss the latest Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings updates, news from around the NFL, and virtually any other topic. On this site, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, you should join us! This is the open thread, which is……open. Therefore, you will see discussion of nearly ANY topic here. Our one rule here is: “Remember, be cool to one another”. Also, a word to the wise, don’t feed the trolls. SKOL!!!!!!

With the stench of Sunday’s game another day removed, we look forward to Thursday night’s Thanksgiving Day matchup in between the Minnesota Vikings and the New England Patriots at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. I have a good feeling about this game. I was concerned about the Dallas game being a potential letdown game, although I don’t think anyone expected that disgusting mess of a game we saw on Sunday. On that same token, I see that butt-whooping being a wake up call to this team, and I expect them to come out swinging on Thursday.

The Vikings match up pretty well against the Patriots, if the coaching staff has an adequate game plan put together, which they DID NOT have for the Dallas game. I see the Patriots as having a similar defense as Dallas, although not as strong in some areas. New England’s defense is stronger against the pass than they are against the run, but without the ferocious pass rush that Dallas possesses. I hope to see the Vikings offense dish out a heavy dose of Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison, and once they establish the running game, it should open up the passing game for Kirk, JJ, and company. We’ll find out in a couple days.

Minnesota Vikings News:

Here’s the initial week 12 injury report from Vikings.com. Also from Vikings.com, here are the few lone highlights from Sunday’s shit show, and there are lots of interviews and more to sift through in the media vault.

Video of the Day:

I really enjoy this guy’s music. This is Koe Wetzel with Drunk Driving. Enjoy!

Former coworker bought a snow plowing and blacktopping company out in Stillwater a few years back. He really sounded enthusiastic, and maybe he’s doing great, but the reviews of that business have tanked since he took over.

Got a new scotch last night. Anyone here ever delve into The Octomore? Super heavily peated stuff. Pretty cool concept. Every year the do a new batch. Usually 5 years old and they do a control batch that is just aged in your standard ex-bourbon barrel, that’s typically the X.1 then they do usually 2-3 other different type of barrel for X.2 X.3 and sometimes x.4 so you can see what the different aging process does to the same juice. I usually wait to see which one gets all the best reviews and just get that one. I have had many I currently also have open a 12.2 and 7.3. I need to do a blind taste test on them all to see which I like best. Cheers everyone!

I’ll never understand the appeal of characterless boring whisky (actually I do very much understand the appeal of “smooth” or what I call boring whisky, it’s just not for me). Even when I make a mix drink I want Wild Turkey 101 or something with some damn gusto. I love smoke flavor in food as well. I will say you can see the color on that whisky because it was aged in wine casks not because it’s very old. That’s my jam, get the sweet of the wine mixed with the power of the peated whisky.

I want something to take my mind off the day from the experience. I want a nose on it that’s interesting and full of flavor same thing with the palate.

Fair enough, I just don’t have the tastebuds for all that overpowering smoke. Much prefer a smooth whisky or brew with a good nose & flavors.

That’s where I started too on my whisky journey. It was smooth Canadian whiskies to start, then it was bourbons, then it was more Ryes, then more scotch, then more peated scotch lol. I do the same shit with music. Grade school was 311 and Nirvana, Middle school Godsmack, PanterA, KoRn, ICP, Slipknot High School Lamb of God, Soulfly, Fear Factory. College was Death, Meshuggah, etc… I keep wanting it more aggressive and complex haha.

Been getting into some fusion stuff from the 70’s & 80’s lately like Casiopea, kind of crazy to hear how those bands so clearly influenced the new wave of jazz/funk like Cory Wong and Vulfpeck.

No, should she have?

I get up at 0530, throw on some long johns, pull on a pair of Carhartt pants I wear all week, then a warm sweater and a pup top/hoodie. Lace up a pair of boots and strike out in the darkness with Tuck. Got back and fired up the tractor, scooped some snow from in front of the shipping container we’re loading the couch from on Thursday. Went in, fed the dog, stripped off the long johns, wifey had some oatmeal, sliced pineapple and a yoghurt set out with my coffee. We chatted about the Vulva delivery and plans for the day. She didn’t have to make lunch today as I’m having a reuben from the cafeteria. She drove me to work and I took off my pants and pup top, put on some scrubs.

I know you wanted to know how my morning went.

What’s everyone doing for Thanksgiving?

Me, we’re going to get two turkey dinners from the cafeteria for lunch, then my wife is making a chicken pot pie and my stepdaughter and SIL are coming out to the compound for dinner. The SIL is the Saints fan that watched the Christmas game where Kamara raped the Vikings so hopefully that doesn’t repeat against NE. I work on Friday so early to bed after that.

Probably take the choco out for a pheasant run, too.

Poor me, I got three Thanksgiving dinners this year. 2 different sisters then elderly mom wants to invite a couple people over for another one, so I’m going to make sure she doesn’t burn the kitchen house down.

I’m going to weight more than Linval pretty soon…

No kiddy table this year, pretty empty shouse unfortunately. The SIL and I will load one of our couches from the shipping container into his pickup, stepdaughter is using it in her new office.

Stepdaughter had a genius hack (or maybe she saw it on Pinterest). Whenever she travels for work, her employer sends boxes of splints to meet her wherever she goes. She has always struggled opening the boxes because, ya know, TSA rules. She had the grandson grind the edge of a defunct metal credit card to a razor sharp blade and can use that to cut open boxes. If you hear of a plane hijacked by someone using the edge of a credit card, this conversation never happened.

My wife and three kids and I are hosting my parents, my sister and her husband, and four of their five kids (fifth is 18 years old and currently overseas). I’m smoking a pork roast and supplying wine and beer, everyone else is doing the rest.

We’ll have a fire in the fireplace (and possibly a bonfire outside) and a movie on for the kiddos in the basement later with the Vikings game (or not!) on in the main room.

Should be a good time.

Going to brother’s place, which is only two miles away. Mom will be there. Nieces and nephews. I will probably bring my wife, as well. Maybe…

I am making the mashed potatoes. Thinking I will do them up with a dash of garlic and cream cheese, in addition to butter and milk. Unless my sister-in-law is making gravy. Then I’ll keep them plainer. Have to discuss with her. One can really go nuts and use half Russet potatoes and half Gold potatoes to get the best of both worlds with starchy and creamy. Potatoes are one of my staple foods. I eat them constantly.

My niece never has time to watch the Vikings, so Thursday night will be her first chance in a long time. They always lose when she watches, so I am picking them to drop the game against the Patriots. It’s time for a mid-season slump anyway. They are a normal thing. Nothing to get too high or low about. It is simply time to lose a few. Bellicek is probably giddy with the possibilities after watching the Dallas tape.

I hadn’t thought about this until now, but looks like it’s basically the same as brewing beer but easier. Just dissolve corn sugar instead of boiling a wort and follow pretty much the same process with all the same equipment. Might be interesting to try for summer…

I’d also looked into brewing a sour or kettle sour a few years ago, but you pretty much need a specialized kettle that has a lid that can seal to brew that. Maybe someday.

My cousins husband is obsessed with sours. He has a degree in chemistry and makes drugs for Pfizer and started brewing a while ago. I don’t really like sours but he makes some I have enjoyed. If I ever started brewing I’d probably just make IPAs and Stouts, maybe a strong Strawberry Blonde for summertime.

Surly has made some really good kettle sours that I would love to clone, someday.

I have always added whole fruits (or halved) during secondary fermentation, it’s pretty wild to pull out a bag of white strawberries/raspberries or just mush after a couple weeks in the carboy. Pretty cool how the brew picks up the color.

Not too much actually, you can start out with the basics (except for bottles and a chiller) for $120 from Northern Brewer –

Brew Share Enjoy Homebrew Starter Kit

And you can almost certainly find all you need for less on craigslist. Easily under $200 for good starter equipment, probably under $500 for good stuff.

Here’s what I’d say for essentials

  • Cleaner (PBW) & sanitizer (Star San)
  • 5 gallon pot/kettle for boil
  • Carboy or fermentation bucket w/airlock
  • Bottle filler (just tubing and valve wastes a lot)
  • Hydrometer & tube for testing specific gravity
  • Immersion chiller (tub w/ice sucks)
  • Bottles (any bottle without screw cap works)
  • Caps and bottle capper

And my preferences (more $$):

  • Brew kettle with a valve for transfer
  • Stainless carboy with a valve for transfer out (siphoning works, but easier to not)
  • Multiple carboys to do a secondary fermentation
  • Brewing bags for BIAB or dry hopping/fruit flavoring
  • Kegging equipment (keg, CO2 tank & regulator, frige/freezer/kegerator, tap)
  • Induction cooktop to do it all in the basement
  • Steam condenser lid to not create mold in the basement

CCHOF5yearstoolate

A clone is just a homebrew recipe for a beer from a brewery.

I usually just google “[brewery] [beer] clone recipe” and either a kit already exists or someone has posted their recipe on a forum.

For you, starting out you’re going to want either all extract or at the very least partial mash because you need a mash tun to do all-grain brewing. (it’s a whole process)

For example, this site has a partial mash Super Cru clone that you can grab the recipe from.

New Belgium's Super Cru (18E) – EXTRACT Homebrew Ingredient Kit

You can either buy the kit or just use the instructions from their site to go to a local brew supply shop and buy those same ingredients yourself.

If you can only find an all grain recipe that you want to try, I’d just google around to find a suitable extract to substitute for each grain that is used. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the trouble to all-grain homebrew. Much harder and messier for only slight gains in taste – if at all.

There are a few American breweries that do good sours, but they aren’t really even comparable to these old Belgians. Almost a different style of beer.

Dogfishhead Sea Quench, Avery El Gose and Sierra Nevada Otra Vez are awesome.
The Bruery also does some really good, but expensive, sours.

They had stacks and stacks and stacks of those kind of cans. Apparently they can’t sell anything if there’s any defect in the label/barcode or if it’s not within like an ounce of what’s listed. Pretty much everyone drank at home for free they had so much.

You should have talked for 75 minutes to the R-word customer service agent I talked to Saturday evening. The service tech said that MidRivers has contracted out all their weekend customer service to the lowest bidder. OMG sososo bad.

FWIW the problem was a bad fiber jumper. Whatever the fuck that is. At least I know who the local service tech is now, know his mother well, told him “you want me to be helping your momma when she shows up in the ER some Saturday evening short of breath, you wanna make sure my fiber works.” He gave me his cell #.

Pretty crazy how precise the ends of fiber optic cabling has to be, and the trouble you have to go through to splice if you happen to damage the incredibly fragile stuff in the field.

Being a rhythm metal guitarist that likes playing with rhythms bands like Meshuggah, Gojira, Mastodon, Tool, are the tops when comes to understandings of rhythm and their rhythm vocabulary is superb.

Well Gojira and Mastodon do more melodic singing. I just look at Meshuggah’s singer as another percussive instrument instead of a set of vocals. Although his lyrics are great. But as a person who plays bass, guitar, drums, Vocals are the last thing I notice where as most other people because most everyone has a voice it’s the first thing they notice. So I get it. I use to hate gutteral vocals as well.

Lowest energy I’ve ever seen after paying the big bucks for a concert was Bob Dylan.

At outdoor amphitheater, could see his bus roll up, he stumbles out on stage, mumbles his way through a half-hour of songs, walks back through the curtain, gets on bus, vrooms away.

I mean, at least you get to say you saw him… but that sounds shitty lol. I’ve seen James Taylor live but it was with his whole big band and that was fun. I also got to see Billy Joel play his 100th performance at Madison Square Garden where they hung his 100th performance banner there that will hang forever. That was fucking cool. Springsteen joined him on stage and played a few of his songs as well. That was incredible. Next day went to a death metal festival in Brooklyn lol. I just love music.

Right? I am so bummed I’ll never get to see Rush live. The one chance I had it was either go see Rush in Arizona or go see Connor McGregor win his first belt in Vegas. Chose the Connor fight which was AMAZING! No regrets but I did do it thinking I’d have more time to see Rush.

13 Billion Dead After Trump Unbanned From Twitter

Nov 20, 2022 · BabylonBee.com

WORLD — Thirteen billion people have already died horrible deaths mere hours after former President Donald Trump was reinstated to Twitter.
“We should have seen this coming,” said a distraught Elon Musk, surveying the killing fields. “The liberals, they tried to warn me – but I just wouldn’t listen! Oh, curse the day that I started reading that dastardly Babylon Bee!”
Just as Democrats predicted, the entire earth descended into chaos and violence within mere seconds of Trump’s account being restored. “The barbarity unleashed by President Trump posting words on a website has literally killed every human on earth and then killed billions of them again,” said Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “I myself have already died seventeen times from Trump’s tweets. Oh no, there’s another notification from Twitter! Goodbye, cruel world!”

Yes, that seems to be a common consensus. The accused also has a right to know all of the charges, too, I think.

I know you didn’t, but saying people have jobs who don’t deserve them because they’re either non-white or women just kind of leads directly there. Might have been a better point made just saying plenty of people don’t deserve their jobs.

Back in the stone age, when companies still told souls why they didn’t hire people, I was turned down for at least 25 jobs because hiring women was all the rage.

That was not a fun period in history.

Elon’s done a lot more in a couple months to reduce the company’s revenue (advertising) than a couple of people you want to believe is some NWO group.

That should have been the plan. Instead they tried to force passing game and almost got Kirk murderdeathkilled. Phat phail in all and any phases indeed.

But, as ugly it was, it only counts as 1 loss, as has been mentioned. On to the Pats, with a much better game plan, hopefully.

Belichick is still Belichick. They’re defense is legit but the offense is very inconsistent with a young QB. They’re trying to keep things as simple as possible for Jones, like they did during the very early years of GOAT. Their oline is beat up and they lack playmakers at WR. They’re winning ugly right now but the Vikings defense isn’t particularly good. We’ll see what happens Sunday, could be a long day if Big Dalvin is out as the run D has been not good w/o him.
