Man, I got home from a meeting last night, and I tuned in to watch the second half of the Thursday Night Football game. After an abysmal third quarter where both offenses played as poorly as the Vikings offense normally plays in the third quarter, and not a point was scored. The 4th quarter started off that way, but Baker Mayfield pulled off some late-game heroics and the Rams came back from being down 13 to win the game 17-16. Mayfield connected on a TD pass with 10 seconds left in the game to put the Rams ahead. I’m happy to see Mayfield have a good game, I always liked him.

i took off work early yesterday to go cut a christmas tree down with the family, went to a place in wisconsin (blech) and they had their field closed until saturday.
So…they wouldn’t let us cut a tree down….even though on saturday those same trees will be cut down.
so we left, and didn’t give them any money for any tree, when we could have cut a tree down and given them money..

Twitter is one giant echo chamber. It has always showed the most liked replies first, which pretty much always align with whoever posted the original tweet. As you might guess, my follow list and feed is pretty left-aligned and yet I still saw all those right-wingers pop up in my feed.

Blaming the extreme sidedness of current American politics almost solely on Twitter because of the ‘previous admin’ is simply foolish to me (especially when Elon has already showed how prone he is to shadowbanning or outright banning pretty much any criticism).

Here in central ND, I’ve noticed that the most psycho parents are parents at basketball games. Is that common throughout the country, or does it vary?
Awhile back, I had a friend visiting, and we went to a high school basketball game. He reported that watching the parents actually made him embarrassed to be there. So, not uncommon…
I enjoy coaching baseball. The parents have been really good, I’ve had no issues. Football wasn’t bad, and soccer has been mostly okay, but one set of parents are nut-jobs and should be medicated.

Want it even worse… go watch a Rez basketball game. My goodness. It’s insane and I wish parents cared half as much about their kid’s academic success.

I just didn’t know if that was the case everywhere. 2 different kids broke the state scoring record in the state tournament last year. The first broke his uncle’s record by scoring 71. A couple of days later a kid scored 82. I think the uncle only lived until about 35 from what I heard.

Yup, no real structure. There have been state champion Rez schools in basketball in SD but NEVER has a Rez school even been in a state championship game for football. You can have just an Elite 5-6 guys on a basketball team and out run and gun your way to a championship… doesn’t work that way in football. I have a good friend who just got the head coach job for his reservation school he’s really trying his damndest to turn it into an actual program with structure, lifting etc… hope it works for him.
yup, my wife played bball and vball in highschool and played many games out on the rez in montana and she has some pretty crazy stories.
When I was growing up Red Cloud had an elite basketball program, as did Custer under the legendary Larry Liutjens, they had a lot of awesome games in the playoffs, both rabid fan based from what I remember. The high school I went to didn’t win a game for two years while I was there lol almost like Sturgis Football ineptitude like when they made to sportcenter for the longest losing streak in US high school football history.
When I was a freshman our high school played Sturgis during that winless era. My HS coach said it was one of the most disrespectful things he’s ever seen to the game of football. I think it was their homecoming and it was raining, linemen doing belly slides in the mud going in and out of the huddle or onto the sideline etc… lol.
I lived and coached on a reservation for 10 years and we played Red Cloud. There were times we played other Rez schools and we weren’t allowed to shake hands afterwards. Crazy.
Yeah Sturgis was weird, they got punked by A schools all the time despite being AA. They had an absolutely elite wrestling program though, regularly pumped out college level talent, couple guys I wrestled went on to schools like Iowa an OK. I got to know a couple of them and basically it was an unwritten rule that if you want to wrestle you dedicate to it year round, no other sports. They dominated that sport for the better part of two decades, almost always took home state title but all their other teams absolutely sucked.

Not all reservations have casino’s you are making glaring generalizations. There is a ton of government assistance and much of it is squandered, misplaced, enabling etc… I’ve seen the good, the great, the bad, the ugly of all of it. The Rez I was on didn’t have a casino but the one neighboring it did… Made no cents to me, why they wouldn’t have one and have all those tribal members go spend their money at a different tribe. I’ve seen families destroy tribal housing just to be given a new house to go destroy while the house they destroyed get’s repaired to get destroyed again. I’ve seen government assistance help raise whole families up and they get back on their feet and go on to do great things. It’s very tricky. We are on 4th generation of families who have never worked… can you imagine growing up in a house where your parents, grand parents, and great grand parents never had a job? What does that do to your psyche for what examples you have?
I had a kid try and get me going by telling me, “Coach I got one of those American Flags in my house upside down with AIM on it. What do you think of that?” I said, “You live in government housing right? You’re parents get EBT right? So you must really hate the government right? If so move out of your house and don’t accept government assistance.” He never thought about it that way. It’s just what he knew growing up that America was the enemy.

My wife was there.
The band’s bassist could not make it, so I was chosen to replace him, even though I do not play bass at all. I then had to figure out how to get the bass out of its case, hook it up, etc. It was a huge bass. The body was big and flat. It looked like one of those comically oversized anime swords.
I had no idea what I was doing, but I figured…it’s just bass. I’ll just pluck the top string in time of the beat. Should be fine. Plus, another bassist showed up to play in tandem with for some odd reason.
It was not fine. The crowd heckled me, particularly a hippy chick was inciting her friends to really put me down.
The concert eventually entered and I had to put the bass away and everything while my wife waited.

Speaking of music, I went to a Soundgarden concert at Red Rocks a few years ago during their reunion tour in like 2015 maybe. Anyway I didn’t know they were coming until like the day of the concert and I had never seen them so I paid the exorbitant price because I thought it would probably be their last tour as a group. I get up to a seat way up high (I was also high af on gummies) and this guy comes out by himself with short hair wearing basketball shorts, a plain white T, sneakers, and proceeds to start screwing around on a keyboard. I’m like who is this F’n guy? Turns out it was Trent Reznor and I didn’t even see that he was opening. He absolutely killed it, sounded amazing, super energy. Soundgarden however, was disappointing. They sounded out of sync, disinterested, and Cornell’s voice did not sound right. Still glad I can say I saw them and Reznor made it worth it.

Dancing Trout from Bayern in Bozeman is my favorite but hard to find in Billings the last couple of years. It’s a seasonal German style dark hefeweizen. I drink far too much Cold Smoke from Kettlehouse. Jack’s 90 and Glacier Ale from Red Lodge are really good as is their hef. Dog Slobber and Street Fight from Angry Hank’s are local favorites but only found at the brewery or some local establishments. Montana Brewing Company has lots of award winning beers that are ok but I’d take those listed first. I will drink their beer when we eat their and their food is on point so that happens.

I had Odells India Pale Ale when I was in CO over Thanksgiving….outstanding.
Odell’s makes great stuff. IPA is awesome. 90 schilling awesome. Mahajara double IPA awesome.
90 is OK. I drank lots of that. I usually stick to ambers or scottish ales. I never found an amber from CO that came anywhere close to MT. Easy Street is probably the best straight hef I’ve had. They had a really good limited run sour when we went on a tour of the brewery. My wife’s favorite used to be Isolation Ale but there’s at least 6 similar beers up here that are better. IPA’s are for skinny jean wearing hipsters.

Sierra Nevada’s Otra Vez & the barreled varieties are some of my favorite summer beers, along with Dogfishhead SeaQuench.
The Bruery is expensive but makes great stuff.

I like Sierra Nevada’s fresh hop IPA. There was a brewery down in Slayton, MN that used to make a decent fresh hop, I think it was called 100 yard dash. Surly used to make one too called wett that used to come out same time as Abrasive but I haven’t seen it in years.

You’re right, Five has proximity bias. I have lived both and go to southern Wyoming fairly frequently and get stuck drinking CO beer. O’dell is what I usually go with but it still doesn’t compare to MT beers. Jeremiah Johnson brewing out of Idaho is also really good. Mountain Man is awesome but both Mountain Man and the Jack’s 90 from Red Lodge make me have weird dreams.

Back in my college days the popular shots were Slippery or Buttery Nipple (just because of the name), Lemon Drop, Jagerbomb, Water Moccasin, Birthday Cake (actually tastes like lemon cake if done well), or tequila.

I was watching some sports commentary the other day where one of the media jackals (not a Vikings homer) was talking about how statistically over the history of the NFL, playoff game winning margins are something like 15-20% less than the associated regular season (RS) margin. This year’s RS has been lower than typical years…it’s 11 something points per game. When you factor in the usual decline in playoff game margin, this post-season would project to something just under 8 points per game, or less than a 1 score margin.
His point was, the Vikings may not always look pretty but once they get into the playoffs, they have a chance to make some noise based on their demonstrated ability to figure out how to win in close games.
Who knows…but it makes for a fun ride.

It has long been an issue with the Raiders. They have historically lost out on free agents as well because they didn’t have enough cash for big signing bonuses or guaranteed money. Signing bonus is obviously paid on signing the contract but then any other guaranteed money in the contract has to be put in escrow so as an organization you still have to have the cash. Is the 565 mil gross or net? That would make a big difference. Maybe it isn’t an issue but it has been in the past for this organization so it wouldn’t surprise me.
Yeah I remember they pretty much had to trade mack because they didn’t have the cash to put in escrow. Their new stadium has changed their value and cash flow quite a lot. If they are cash poor it has to be due to poor financial management.
The stadium changes their value but the only change in cash flow so far has been concessions. Ticket sales are all lumped together league wide and then evenly dispersed to all 32 teams. The real cash flow is from the TV deals, or selling the team.
