Vikings @ Bears
The Vikings went into Soldier Field yesterday and got a win against the Bears. I know the Bears are a 3-14 team, but getting a win there on the road is never a gimme, so it was good to see the Vikings handle business and not make it harder than it had to be.
I loved what I saw from Kirk in the first half, as he was razor sharp (with the exception of the decision to throw that last pass at the end of the first half). Dalvin looked good, minus the fumble, and Mattison looked great. Reed still struggled with the snap count at times, but seemed to do better with it than last week. The rest of the O-line held up very well. In the second half, Irv Smith got some playing time, and made the most of it. He stood out for good reasons on a few occasions. Another guy who made the most of his opportunity to see the field was Jaylon Nailor, as he made a few nice looking plays in the second half. KJ put up another solid outing. The starters played the first half, then most of them sat in the second half. Mullens filled in pretty well at QB, minus one ill-advised throw that resulted in his only interception.
The defense did a really good job yesterday. Yes, I’m aware that it was against the Bears, but the Vikings defense has had a habit of making bad offenses look good all year, and they didn’t do that yesterday, so I’ll consider that a win. Duke Shelley really looked good when he got more playing time in the second half.
Greg Joseph missed the PAT on the first touchdown of the game. After that, he hit everything they asked him to kick. He also hit one at the end of the first half that didn’t count. He did enough to make you happy, but threw that missed PAT in there just to let you know that you’d better not take any kick for granted in the playoffs. Can you imagine if the fate of a playoff game hanging in the balance of a 45 yard field goal? How would your nerves be with Greg Joseph lining up to kick that 45 yarder? Or any yarder?
Yikes, this is going to be a stressful playoff run. You’d expect nothing else from this year’s Vikings. In the end, the Minnesota Vikings end the 2022-23 regular season with a 13-4 record. They’re the NFC North champions and are the 3rd seed in the NFC heading into the playoffs.

Skolly, that would be great to see. O-line is the concern here though. KOC better have a plan to counter that Giants pass rush and D-line. Might see some screens to Cook as well as draw plays. The two TE’s (TJ and Smith Jr) COULD be huge difference makers in my opinion.
Have to say Mullens looks like the best back-up QB we’ve had in a long time.

So we all agree that statistically, we have not been great in any phase of the game, especially on defense, and of course with a kicker who can’t make extra points for some reason. The offense finished 7th in total yards and eighth in points per game, so they were above average.
With all that we ended up 13-4.

Agree. I think there’s some opportunities in our offense for more points BUT we’ll be facing better defenses in the post season so it’s a give and take. I do believe Kirk could get hot and is capable of a run. Defense is the big worry but maybe they turn it up a notch. Some of the guys have two weeks rest and a nice get tuned up game against the Giants but after that it’s likely off to San Fran and that likely presents about a 30% chance of winning but crazier things have happened. We did once there a few decades ago.

We have been ranked bottom 10 all season and our record is based on officiating and shit luck. We set numerous all time nfl records for being a shitty team and still winning. Total yards and point are irrelevant until put into context. When put into context we suck in all 3 phases of the game. Imagine losing 11 one score games next season.
We have a rookie head coach new DC and OC, and two new schemes (both dramatically different from last year). One would logically think that the first year would be their worst year. Next year the players will be better in the new schemes, and the rookie learning curve will have passed. Personally, I think we should be better on both sides of the ball next year, unless we fire the DC and start all over again on that side.

I think the surprise cuts are Kendrick’s for sure and possibly AT and Cook. I think both of them take big pay cuts and stay. Kendricks has value in a 4-3 defense somewhere else

Cousins stated in his presser that he first felt like the offense “clicked” with him after the Lions game (Week 14). Keep in mind it has to “click” with everyone else on offense too. Let’s see if the offense gets hot in the playoffs. I certainly have NOT been impressed with this great scheme that KOC brought in thus far. We’re averaging just under 25 points a game. Need to get that up to around 30.
Offense is starting to look better, I think they’re more balanced now, especially toward the end of the year (minus the Pecker game).
I agree GF. I think if KOC had left the starters in and kept his foot on the gas against the Bears we could have had close to 600 yards and 42+ points.
Absolutely, Kirk had 220 yards in the first half, and they were already starting to throttle back toward the end of the half. Granted, it’s against the Bears, but the offense looked very good.

Bears defense though is god awful, they have a anemic dline and average corners. I agree with what you’re saying though with KOC. Seems to me he’s leaving a lot of meat on the bone with missed opportunities with putting players in better positions. Like his best player JJ…still not nearly involved enough against a subpar defense yesterday. Move him around, set pick plays. Then the RB touches were better yesterday as Mattison needs more if not all the goal line work. I like the few flashes of 12 personnel with two TE’s he showed. We need 30 points at least from this offense to make up for the defense and our lame kicker.

Kirk is behind both Mills and Dak in terms of INTs, and tied with Carr (who hasn’t played the last game or two) and Josh Allen, who’s pretty good IIRC.
He’s also thrown more yards than everyone in that group and more TDs than everyone other than Allen. I’m not an ever-Kirker…I just prefer complete facts when arguing a point rather than cherry picking to support my stale narrative.

When you look at the percentage of hits and sacks per dropback you will see that Cousins *in 2015) was pressured and hit at a high rate. In 2016, he threw for almost 5,000 behind his only decent line of his career. People seem to miss that other than 2016, his lines have been crap.
In 2016 Scherff made his professional debut in the Redskins’ season-opening 17-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins. He started all 16 regular season games, played 752 snaps, and helped the Redskins finish first in the NFC East with a 9-7 record. Scherff finished his second season starting in all 16 regular season games, and due to his highly regarded performance that year, he was voted to the 2017 pro Bowl his first such vote. n If you recall, 2017 was the year Cousins had 26 different offensive line-ups in front of him through week 13. That trainer, who was not expecting to be pushed and was not wearing pads could have easily fallen on Swift who was already hurt. No, the push wasn’t anything crazy, but it wouldn’t take much for that to have been bad. HUGE difference between mobile and desktop experience. I use mostly desktop and it starts to bog down around 300 comments and gets really bad around 500. That said, if I log into the same thread on my mobile, it moves just fine.
That sounds like a personal issue. I haven’t seen any slow down, even over 500.
It started the same time they launched ads on the site. I don’t use an ad blocker (although I should probably look into it) so that may be the difference.
That said, thanks to Skoloholics I now have access to sites for a variety of potential brides should my wife ever decide to leave me, including Ukranian, Russian and Asian, among others.
I got some weird ads for a while. Kept reporting them as inappropriate and they’ve gotten better.

Well, Brad says “here’s a new thread when you need it”. I’m a late adopter of deciding when to use new things, for example I will use a flashlight even when light is dim until it fails completely before replacing the batteries. Same with my hearing aids when they give the low battery alarm.
