No longer New Vikings Fan
13 January 2023 2:18 pm

I honestly don’t expect the Vikings to go very far in the playoffs. I feel like they should beat the Giants Sunday, but after that I think it gets rough for them.

The offense has not lived up to expectations this year and I put that at the feet of our new HC. He brought in an offense with what I have labeled an “adaptive” passing scheme. This scheme allows receivers to adapt (or alter) their routes as they’re running them based on what they see the defense doing post snap. Thus not only does the QB have to read the defense, he has to guess where his receivers are going. Not a good combo for a QB who is a technician, not a playmaker. This is one reason Cousins stats dropped this season. Not actually knowing where his receivers are going to be.

Good to see that DePaolo is getting deserved recognition, but it seems like one step above naming the kid who runs out and retrieves the tee after kickoffs to the All-Pro team.

This is just a guess, but I think 5:

One person to run the fan that blows the balloons away from the light fixture
One person to operate the helium machine
One person to suck the helium, float into the air and change out the bulb
One person to hold the string attached to the bulb changer that prevents him/her from floating away
And one person to pour and serve the post-work Zimas

Playoff teams guaranteed a possession in OT even if a team scores a TD first. Then it’s sudden death. Seems to me that should be standard.

Yes. They do.

The only score that ends it before a possession is a safety.
Team kicks off to start OT and the returner gets tackeled at their own 2 yard line. QB sacked in the endzone for a safety. Gameover.

I’m actually surprised at all the talking heads that seem to have picked the Giants. The Vikings could lose this game. They’ve done crap like this before.
But you look at all the “Bad” things the Vikings do like DVOA and point Diff., and you can see the Giants doing it as well.

I also like your silver lining with the players taking over some of the duties.

I know PFF can have crap ratings. But I do think there is something to Donatels scheme that is causing a huge break between PFF scores and the D as a whole. Individually they all rank as the 4th best unit. But they give up a ton of yards.
That looks like scheme to me.

Then Vikings will almost immediately fumble, defense will hold, opponent will kick a 50+ yard FG to win.

Rich Gannon on NFL radio. In Philly visiting his mom and woke up this morning to find out someone had stolen the catalytic converter in his car that was parked outside overnight. He calls his insurance agent who tells him that it happens all the time in Philly. They don’t ever bother involving the police because they can’t keep up due to the frequency that it happens. The insurance companies just go ahead and cover the replacement, chalking it up to Philly people doing Philly things.

It would be cool but no. I won’t be surprised if the win tomorrow though. The whole division opponent, winning 3 in one year thing. Oh, and Purdy has played enough now that there is tape on him. As much as I don’t like him, Carroll is a good coach and should be able to come up with a scheme to limit Purdy’s effectiveness.

Cousins led eight game-winning drives in 2022, tying the highest figure on record. (Matthew Stafford led eight game-winning drives back in 2016) Stafford’s 2016 Lions went 9-7 and got hammered by the Seahawks in the first round of the playoffs. The 2022 Vikings are better, granted.

Let’s look at how teams with QBs with 7 game winning drives did in the playoffs:

Drew Brees’ *aints went 13-3 in 2018 but lost in the playoffs because they gave up a game-tying field goal in regulation to the Rams, then Brees threw an overtime interception. LOL, F those guys.

Andrew Luck led the 11-5 Colts to a wild-card loss to the Ravens in 2012.

Derek Carr got injured late in the season for the 12-4 2016 Raiders; Connor Cook led the team to a playoff loss.

Peyton Manning led the 14-2 2009 Colts to a Super Bowl loss to the Saints.

Jake Delhomme used seven game-winning drive to lead the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2003, where they came within a field goal of beating the Patriots!

Peyton Manning led the 1999 Colts to a 13-3 record as an up-and-comer before falling to Jeff Fisher’s Titans in the first round of the playoffs.

Do you remember when Jake Plummer led the 9-7 1998 Cardinals to the second round of the playoffs? With Rob Moore, Frank Sanders, and Adrian Murrell as his top playmakers? It happened.

Manning’s Colts (’09) and Delhomme’s Panthers seem to be the current ceiling. Hoping for that (or better!) for our Vikings this year.

The Raiders seem to be the floor. Hoping we don’t see a Cousins injury early in the game (or before the game!).

I’m guessing the Vikings win a nail biter this Sunday, cursing us with an agonizing week of talking ourselves into how they could win in the divisional round only to get the tar beat out of ’em.

My wife and I took a paddleboat cruise from NO to Memphis and she really wanted to see Graceland so we stayed on an extra two days, got tickets to see Sun records Rock and Roll HOF Graceland etc. Was really easy to get around downtown and on the bus system. I thought I wouldn’t really get into Graceland but it was absolutely amazing, not just the estate but all the museums across the highway.

Never felt unsafe in Memphis. Nashville was disappointing because it did not feel as safe – of course Nashville is much bigger. We will visit Memphis again.

She’s a great lady.

Some of the activities were activity booklets with various things to do (word search, connect the dots, etc) and she’d package new pens & markers with them. I got a really nice review of DogSS of War on Goodreads that I had to share. Not a relative or paid shill either!

A group of American soldiers, each the last of their ill-fated platoons, are sent on a suicide mission to retrieve a mystical artifact in an abandoned town guarded by Nazi werewolves.

What else is there to say? That synopsis is just irresistible. Somehow the book actually lives up to that promise too.

I don’t really like the term “guilty pleasure” since you should unabashedly enjoy what you enjoy and it perpetuates the high culture vs low culture dichotomy that has plagued the art world for centuries, but this is a perfect example of one. It feels like the ultimate big-budget version of one of those outlandish 1980s horror movies you find at a video rental store as a kid.

The characters actually get some dimension to them, the writing is surprisingly good, and that climax is a sight to behold. It’s taking all of my willpower not to start gushing and spoiling everything.

If you’re a fan of historical horror, read this book.

If you’re a fan of werewolves, read this book.

James Stewart makes Tom Hank’s every-man persona look like a nobody persona. James Stewart was so every-man he was the spokesperson for soup. If you don’t love James Stewart’s grandfatherly stutter, you are likely a killer of kittens.

James Stewart can read a poem about a dog that has highly questionable rhythm and meter, starts out amusing, becomes meandering, and just when you begin to think someone should put this poor senile man down for a nap, he pulls off a finish that makes you feel like crying.

I find that I don’t like to examine good movies too closely. It is kind of like learning how magicians do the trick.

I’ve found that to be true for music. It’s a double-edged sword. It allows one to appreciate the best art on levels that most cannot, but it prevents one from enjoying popular consumer-level art the way that most people can.

I appreciate the review, I’ll likely watch Firecreek sometime relatively soon. My father and I had a movie kinda like that where its past down, but its more obscure, Moving Violations starring John Murray (Bill Murray’s little bro), Jennifer Tilly, Stacey Keach, as well as that tall blonde woman who was in a ton of 80’s movies, like Back To School, but her name escapes me. Anyway, we still both watch it every few years and then we’ll text or call eachother and talk about it.

Absolutely not and I will not. There are some things that should not be touched and that was one of them. Sort of like rewriting the Bible. There were plenty of other Duke movies that could have been remade and been awesome but this one should have been left alone.

*PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT*

Please be careful today Viking fans. Your brain is running at 40% capacity today because 60% of it’s capacity is analyzing, calculating, contemplating the Vikings fortunes in the playoffs this weekend. It’s a dangerous dynamic…

-Chopping up some taters and thinking about Donatell’s shell defense and whoopsie there goes the ole nose picker.

-Driving to work down the same route you’ve done a thousand times thinking about JJ’s touches and how KOC can get him the ball more and your brain remembers the green light from yesterday when today it’s actually red and BLAM you get t-boned by a my pillow truck.

Be aware, take care and do not drive fast and take chances as it likely will lead to certain death or dismemberment.

Did you decide on transportation to the game? If you drive I would suggest prepaying for a parking spot, but make sure you are still early. Also, have the phone number of the company you reserve a parking spot with handy. Went to the Dallas game, reserved and pre-paid for a spot in the ramp across the street from US Bank, when we arrived they said the lot is full and we could get refunded on-line. If this happens call the company right away and they will find you a new location.

the stat pushers

It’s been funny to watch the shift in focus on stats between the Ever and Never-Kirkers this season. Prior to 2023, the Ever-Kirkers pushed the stat narrative to support Kirk while the Never-Kirkers argued wins and losses. This season, it’s been flipped on it’s head with the Ever-crew pointing to 13-4 while the Never-gang talks about his career high INT’s, etc.

We are a schizophrenic fan base.

QB is responsible for most wins. Maybe not all. But most.

Game winning drives are also a team stat attributed to the QB. The O-line has to protect and run block, and the skill position players have to execute. The defense also has to keep the other team from scoring after the drive as well.

I’m not saying they’re not but it’s funny you mention that because that’s also been an oft debated Cousins topic. How much credit or blame does Kirk get for wins or losses, respectively.

My outlook is that in the past the defense has hung on again and again while the offense does a number of three and outs. Being honest I can’t say the defense has slammed the door on 3rd and longs or 4th down gambles this year, but Kirk has led a number of game winning drives.

Cousins is part of the team. He contributes to wins just like the other 53 guys on the roster. The QB position is often labeled as the most important one on the team, so a good QB gives you a better chance at a win. That said, we all know that with a bad defense and a bad kicking game, one guy can only do so much. Oh yeah, bad pass protection too.

I, for one, give credit to Cousins for wins.
The QB is the most important position on the field.

I just like giving crap to the people who claim “wins aren’t a QB stat”, until this year.

When Kirky pulls his beaker in the Divisional round, the stat pushers will be back claiming it wasn’t Beaker’s fault.

The Holland Maroons….lol. Can’t make it up.

I ran a region in healthcare back in 2000-2005 in Holland, MI was one of my locations I visited frequently. Great little town. Little did I know right down the street chains was grinding in to the all time greatest QB for my beloved Vikings.

You must be on your meds today.
Because after the pukers, you said he sucked bad, and even saying he should be off the team IIRC.
