I’m sure most of you have watched or listened to yesterday’s press conference with HC Kevin O’Connell and GM Kwesi-Adofo-Mensah. If you haven’t, it’s linked below. I did note that KOC was non-committall in regards to DC Ed Donatell, and he seemed to give a pretty strong endorsement for Kirk Cousins being the plan at QB going forward, but other than that, there really wasn’t a lot to pull from that press conference. Lots of buzzwords and non-answers, exactly what you’d expect from a press conference of this sort at this time of year.
Well, buckle up, folks. It’s going to be a long off-season. Again, thank God for ice fishing.

At NFL.com, they look at Kevin O’Connell’s non-committal to DC Ed Donatell. I watched the press conference, and it was interesting that he wouldn’t commit to Donatell. It could be something, but it could be nothing. We’ll find out soon. I would think that if they were going to make a move, they’d make it within a couple weeks of the season’s end. There isn’t much advantage to waiting, unless you’re unsure whether you want to make a change.

EJIRO EVERO – DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, DENVER BRONCOS
Evero is already a Defensive Coordinator with the Denver Broncos, but it looks like Head Coach Nathanial Hackett is unlikely to see a second season. This would leave Evero looking for a job unless the Broncos hire him as their next Head Coach. Evero has been one of the only bright spots in Denver this year, heading up the 4th ranked defense in DVOA.

Well he just interviewed with the Panthers for their HC position.
The 42-year-old has just one year of coordinating experience but is someone that many around the league feel will be a quality head coach. Throughout his career, Evero has worked under head coaches Jim Harbaugh (49ers), Mike McCarthy (Packers), and Sean McVay (Rams) and defensive coordinators Vic Fangio (49ers), Dom Capers (Packers), Wade Phillips (Rams), Brandon Staley (Rams), and Raheem Morris (Rams). He’s worked with some very good coaches over the years and took a lot of what he learned from all of those guys and turned it into a very successful first year in Denver calling the shots defensively.
In 2021, the Broncos’ defense finished 12th in pass defense (210.2 ypg), 10th in rush defense (109.8 ypg), 7th in total defense (320 ypg), and 14th in scoring defense (21.1 ppg).
Ejiro has also interviewed with the Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, and Denver Broncos.

I doubt Peterson has actually looked at the circumstances of that play. I think he’d have a different perspective if he saw that Cousins was hit as he was throwing the ball and didn’t have anywhere to go with the ball downfield. You can’t really see much from the sidelines. Also, he may have been “quoted” out of context for effect.

Donatell made clear that his core philosophy was to rely on his front four, especially linebackers Z Smith and D Hunter, to apply enough pressure to allow the rest of the defense to sit back in zone coverage. But the Vikings’ four-man rush managed a 23.9% pressure rate during the regular season, the ninth lowest in the league, and their shell zone left far too much room for easy yards.
If you’re rushing four, and talking about your “front four” then by default you are not playing a 3-4.

Over the last two seasons the Vikings have been “good television”. That is, lots of one score games decided late in the game or in overtime. Last year we lost more than we won in these close contests. This year we set a record for winning one score games. To me this shows growth and improvement. I’m hoping for more growth and improvement next year.

Yes, the offense should be much better. The new scheme KOC brought in created more problems than it solved in my opinion. It made everything harder on every single player. Had big misses even at the end of the season. A second year will benefit the whole offense. We’ll see if they start looking more like the Chiefs next year. The key difference is the Chiefs are still trying to score in the 4th quarter when they’re up by 3 or more TD’s.

I think the pendulum swung to far the other way. We do this shit all the time in America, can’t ever have balance. I don’t see why you would need live rounds. My guess is they maybe did some target practice or something at some point and they got mixed in/forgotten? That or somebody very well knew what they were doing when they loaded the gun. I don’t know how you could put live rounds in the gun and not see they are blanks. Blanks don’t have a big hunk of lead on the end of them. Even with just a primer, a bullet can still fire. Obviously not as hard, but that’s what western trick shooters/quick draw guys use. 45 shell, bullet, no powder, shotgun primer. The more you think about the failures the more you realize these people had to be the biggest idiots on the planet or at least somebody knew exactly what they were doing. Who was he supposed to “pretend to shoot” in the movie? If you don’t think Alec knew what was going on, then I would look at that person as the intended target. Otherwise Alec knew what he was doing and the gal that died was the target.

There are theories out there as to why she could have been the target of an “accidental shooting”. Alec maybe didn´t even know what he really was doing when he pulled the trigger, but it´s a possibility.
Last time something like this happened was Brandon Lee IIRC. In that case, it was never found out who loaded the gun that killed him with a live round or live rounds. Ruled a tragic accident. RIP

True cause of Brandon Lee’s death:
In a previous scene, the exact same prop gun had been used and was fitted with dummy cartridges, which are said to look more realistic on film.
Commercial dummy cartridges are usually fitted with bullets, though powder and primer are removed.
However, catastrophically in the instance, the prop crew took the decision to make their own dummy cartridges, thus removing the gun powder but, unbeknown to themselves, leaving the primer still inside of the cartridge.
During filming, the revolver was then discharged with an improperly-deactivated cartridge in the chamber of the gun. Sadly, this meant the primer was set off with enough force to drive the bullet into the barrel, where it become stuck – known as a squib load.
Tragically, the prop crew either failed to notice, or perhaps didn’t recognize, the significance of this issue.
In the scene which proved fatal to Brandon Lee, the revolver was fired at Lee from a distance of 12-15ft as planned, though the dummy cartridges were swapped for blank rounds – which feature a live powder charge AND primer but no bullet.
Devastatingly, this meant when Massee fired the gun, the bullet which had been trapped in the barrel was fired with virtually the same force as a gun which had been loaded with a live round.
The shot hit Brandon Lee in the stomach and forced the 28-year-old actor to fall forwards, as opposed to backwards which was in the script.
While the on set crew originally believed he was still acting, the magnitude of the accident soon became apparent and he was air lifted to hospital. He underwent hours of surgery at a nearby hospital, but was confirmed dead on March 31 1993.

Now, DNR Hunter Safety courses say A) Treat every gun as if it were loaded, B) Never point a gun at something you don’t intend to kill, C) Always be sure of your target and what’s beyond it, D) Always verify yourself that a gun is loaded or unloaded. (so he’s guilty?)
But, consider that your typical actor-types A) will not have graduated from any Hunter Safety courses, B) are, by and large, idiots that need to be spoon fed knowledge we common folk have grown up with, and C) I’m apparently a big fan of alphabetized lists. (so he’s innocent?)
I still don’t buy it, especially after he tried to claim he never pulled the trigger. Bull honky on that. So we accept that Baldwin is a Hollywood idiot and knows nothing more than here take this and pull the trigger (I don’t buy that either, but we’ll go with it). This gun has been loaded by somebody else who is knowledgeable enough about guns to going plinking off set. They then had to bring it back to the set, presumably unloading it for the drive back (I don’t know New Mexico’s guns in cars laws). We now have a gun that at the very least has the magazine removed. Somebody had to put a magazine into the gun, and I’m supposed to believe that they didn’t look at the magazine and see the obvious difference between live rounds and blanks?
I think he is at least guilty of negligence and therefore negligent homicide. Being too stupid to check the rounds in the gun yourself is beyond negligent and you’re the one that pulled the trigger.
Scratch the magazine thing. It was apparently a western so they would have been using a revolver. I guess I could see dummy rounds with real bullets but no powder or primer being used for certain camera shots that didn’t need the gun to be fired.
There should still be some marking on the bullets or its pretty obvious if there’s a primer missing. It really doesn’t matter because nothing will come of it so at the end of the day they are just idiots and the useful idiots will continue to follow whatever they spout to the media.
I did read that some of the folks were doing target practice for fun with live rounds that day. Can’t recall if they said it was only one live round left in the gun by mistake.
I’m surprised they use real guns on movie sets.

Unless they get decimated by injuries I don’t think the offense will fail, especially with the rookie Jamo now fully recovered and will get in a full offseason. A huge part of the Bucs failure on offense was a ton of injuries to WRs and especially the oline.
Yup, injuries can destroy any season, shit luck if the coordinator ends up being the scapegoat for the HC and gets canned to appease the fanbase. Lions should be good, at least that´s what it looks like on paper.

I have no strong feelings either way. Next season is probably one of those just-get-through-it seasons, so Joseph is irrelevant to me. I’m grateful this year had some genuine entertainment value because I suspect next season to be fairly bland.

You don’t hear them much anymore, I made sure to carry on the tradition, at least partially. I remember when folks had the polka band as the wedding music, those were fun dances to attend as a kid.
My wife’s uncle was our DJ. He liked people as much as I do, but he wanted to be there & help if possible. He’d prefer to do something where he wouldn’t have to talk to people, and he had a bunch of music & a system, so there you go. He drank wine & played music, nobody bugging him, happy as a lark. He died a year or two ago, cancer. Really good dude, math teacher in Billings for decades. He did not like people much, so he and I always got along.
We didn’t have a dance, (thank goodness), but I believe “Somewhere Out There” was played while a slideshow happened.
We got married “old,” so we understood everyone wanted to go home and go to bed. We had the wedding, food and then out of there.
We were older, too, 37 when we got married. We had a dance because we were still young enough where people wanted to hang out. Plus, quite a few of our friends drink & most of my family drinks. Her BIL got shit-faced & was the life of the dance, we got a lot of laughs from him. He ended up sleeping in my in-law’s room because his wife wouldn’t let him in their room. LOL.
We did the same thing. Made 2 things clear: Adult party, so please arrange for your child to be taken care of. And no gifts. Come drink, eat, hangout until close. Our reception was delayed due to the pandemic so it actually took place a full 16 months after we were married in a small ceremony.
There were lots of kids at ours, they danced, too. I might have played a game of pinochle at one point, I can’t recall. I didn’t drink at that time, so I didn’t partake in those festivities. I’m guessing my BIL was hurting the next day.
You need folks like that to pull a dance off. I have a small family, very small, only two first cousins, and they are pretty reserved, so a dance would have been painful. Got to have party animals to make a dance fun.

Accurate and funny. The baptist church we used to go to also frowned upon movies. I remember taking my kids to a movie, recognizing someone from church, saying hi and seeing them freak out and pretend to not know me.
I also remember I invited a friend to the church. He was sitting in his truck smoking a cigarette prior to the service, and a 200 pound woman told him smoking was bad for him., He started the truck and left.
I usually do not miss church. been years, and I am better off golfing on Sundays.

I’m not sure what the outcome was in terms of his church…they’ve kept it pretty quiet in terms of what they’ve shared with the family.
That said, here’s a better example of why I call him an idiot. My wife’s mom lived across the street from her sister (his mom) for years in a little town in rural MS. My mother-in-law has had significant health issues for the past year or two, requiring 24/7 home heath care. His mom, who is a few years younger, is also having a lot of health issues, and needs some level (probably not 24/7 yet) of home care as well.
He visits his mom every once in awhile but doesn’t want to take much, if any, responsibility for her care. He leaves her a weekly cash budget, that he sets but it’s her money, that she can use for groceries during the week. If she runs out of cash, he won’t give her any more until the next week. He also told her if she needs anything health related, she should go ask her sister’s home care providers for help.
My wife and her sister were paying for this care and, at times, the care givers would get distracted from taking care of my mother-in-law, trying to help her sister because they know her well (she’d typically walk across the street for visits at least once a day) and they feel bad for her.
My wife’s sister (who managed the home care provider’s schedule, pay, etc) finally sat him down and said it was time for him to find care for his mom, rather than depend on the care givers that were taking care of his aunt. His response was, “I’m not wasting any of my inheritance paying for care givers.”
Anyway my mother-in-law passed away last weekend (nothing related to her care…it was just her time). I’m getting ready to log out because we’re driving to New Orleans for the funeral tomorrow.
But I share that story as a better example of why I think he’s an idiot.

I was told it is was significantly improved, top ten in fact. However, it varied from meh to dogshit all year from what I saw.
They ranked in the top 10 one week, they were never a top 10 O-line. They were slightly above average to slightly below average, somewhere in there.

Yes, yes they are. Probably the best O-line we’ve had since 2013. Case could be made for the 2017 line, but I think this year’s line is better than them.

Going by PFF (grain of salt), the Vikings graded as:
19th best pass blocking team
6th best run blocking team.
Pass blocking efficiency, the Vikings ranked 27th.
Pass Blocking Efficiency – A PFF Signature stat measuring pressure allowed on a per-snap basis with weighting toward sacks allowed.
They’ve been decent or good in run blocking for a while but I don’t buy it this year, they sucked running the ball mostly. They’ve been incompetent pass blocking for some time.
They graded high on run blocking, but graded low on actually running the ball. Again, this is PFF so grain of salt, but still, it seems to imply that Dalvin isn’t very good.
The team also graded poorly on pass defense (19th), but 6th best in passing the ball. So, that seems to imply that Kirk and the WRs are kicking ass despite lower than average pass blocking.

There’s over $34 million in base salaries remaining for 2023-25. If you tried to restructure, there’s really no room to extend him. If you add more years, you’re signing a running back to the age of 32 or more.

Looking through stats, you’ll be surprised to know that there were teams who blitzed less frequently than the Vikings last year. The Vikings are 24th in the league, as they blitzed on 18.9% of dropbacks. The Giants led the league in this category as they blitzed on 39.7% of dropbacks. KOC should have asked Babe Winkelman to come here instead of going to New York.

So it would appear that generating pressure wasn’t the biggest issue but coverage was.
That’s what I’m seeing. We did okay at generating pressure, even without blitzing, but coverage appears to be shit. This jives with the PFF grades, too. Vikings have graded low in coverage all year.

Yep, that’s a factor. Guy catches a ball & there’s nobody within 5 yards, he scampers in to the end zone. No missed tackle, but there’s an issue there.
