Minnesota Vikings News:

At NBC, Kirk Cousins said that he wants to be with the Vikings and he hopes to ‘earn the right to do that’. Rational conversation is sure to ensue.

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill says he feels ‘a little bit of déjà vu’ after Will Levis selection, but is not focused on the rookie QB. I remember going to the Deja Vu in Minneapolis back in my younger years. I think it’s kinda weird that Tannehill has those kinds of thoughts about Levis. Then again, who am I to judge? To each their own. I thought Tannehill was married, though. It’s probably not the last we’ll hear about this ongoing saga.

At the SI Mailbag, they look at changes they’d like to see made to future NFL Drafts. I didn’t read this, but I sure as hell hope they mention that we don’t want to see the friggin’ Jonas Brothers again. I still don’t know what a Jonas Brother is and I don’t care.

Video of the Day:

Here are some funny drunk people to watch on this lovely Thursday. Enjoy!

Forrest left home running. He ran a ways and then turned left, ran the same distance and turned left again, ran the same distance and turned left again. When he got home, there were two masked men. Who were they?

“Jordan Addison said in a recent interview that him and Justin Jefferson will ‘instantly’ be the best WR duo in the NFL.”

He’s got to learn the playbook first, and he seems to forget he’s never set foot on an NFL field. KJ (a guy who worked hard and earned his way onto the field) is going to read that and be very insulted.

Thielen went out of his way to teach JJ and mentor him. Nobody is gonna want to do that with this guy (IMO). JJ came in and just went to work. He didn’t come in shooting his mouth off.

Hopefully JJ is secure enough in his place that he will mentor him.

This isn’t a security issue, it’s a humility issue. JJ worked his tail off and earned his way onto the field. Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but JJ and this guy are two very different players IMO.

Sounds more like confidence.

NFL has a way of humbling people.

he’s going to get on the field with his Vikings DBs in camp so hopefully they give him a good run.

Don´t mind that too much. You might see the little thumb icons below every post, that´s where one can give positive or negative feedback to any given post by clicking on them.

Red just means that somebody disagrees with the content of the post but is too lazy to type a comment of their own.

I agree. Tiki Barber comes to mind in that regard. Talented runner, put the ball on the ground early and often in his career. So did Ahman Green. Both turned it around. Green’s was due to an equipment change – the rubber elbow pads he wore would get slick and the ball would slip out.

2025 – $43.5M / $57.5M dead
2026 – $74.5M / $39.5 dead
2027 – $74.5M / $21.5 dead
2028 – $12.5M cap hit without a new contract. 2028 and 2029 are void years with hits of $8M and $4.5M respectively.

The dead cap numbers don’t add up to me. I think they have something wrong. 2026 for example there is $29M in signing bonus left to account for and $28.5M left in option bonus to account for but somehow there’s only a $39.5M dead hit. Looks like 2027 is un-guaranteed as well. Spotrac says it would be a $21.5M dead hit to cut him but the way they break the contract down I think it would be more like $35M dead hit.

“I think I told someone like man I wanna throw for like 6,000 yards with the weapons we have,” Jackson said. “And I’m not an individual award-type guy or a stat watcher, I just want to do that because no one’s ever done it and I feel like we have the weapons to do it.” The single-season record is 5,477 yards, set by Peyton Manning in 2013.

I think he meant to say “run for 6,000 yards”

Is this the team that has a couple of 270 pound tight ends and a 300 pound fullback. Picked up a couple of receivers and now 6000 yards passing. Quite a change in philosophy Great runner, but not exactly the most accurate throw of the football .

——————————————–

Grade

D+

Minnesota Vikings
Total picks: 6
Round 1
o   USC WR Jordan Addison (No. 23 overall)
Round 3
o   USC CB Mekhi Blackmon (No. 102)
Round 4
o   LSU DB Jay Ward (No. 134)
Round 5
o   LSU DT Jaquelin Roy (No. 141)
o   BYU QB Jaren Hall (No. 164)
Round 7
o   UAB RB DeWayne McBride (No. 222)

The Vikings pulled a minor surprise — but hardly a shock — when they took Jordan Addison in Round 1. What made it most interesting was doing so with Maryland CB Deonte Banks still on the board. It’s reasonable to think they anticipate second-year CBs Andrew Booth and Akayleb Evans will be healthy enough to contribute, although the Vikes did use their next two picks on the secondary. Addison is a dangerous playmaker who will see clearer paths opposite Justin Jefferson. But can the Pittsburgh/USC product thrive on the outside, or will he be mostly limited to the slot? At 173 pounds, lacking elite speed, Addison must show he can get loose from press-man coverage, but he’s a three-level threat with polished route-running skills.

Mekhi Blackmon was a reach in my mind, but he certainly fits the mold of a Brian Flores defender, so I’ll reserve judgment a bit. He is a bit older, however, at age 24 — and had some injury issues in college.

The Jay Ward pick made a little more sense in that he has safety/slot/outside-corner versatility and is a bit cleaner an evaluation from a health standpoint.

Jaquelin Roy is a strong, stout defender with the ability to contribute in a rotation, but his lack of twitch likely keeps him off the field in obvious passing situations.

The Vikings were expected to be in on the quarterbacks, so the Jaren Hall selection wasn’t surprising. He also operated in a system with some pro concepts and has the smarts, moxie and athleticism to make it. But Hall is already 25 years old, injury-prone and lacks high-end arm talent. So, while Kirk Cousins is in the last year of his contract, Hall doesn’t exactly present a clear succession plan.

Minnesota’s final pick was by far my favorite, considering where the Vikings got DeWayne McBride. He absolutely has the tackle-breaking skill and surprising wiggle to be a first- and second-down standout, even while it’s obvious his ball security (nine fumbles on 525 carries at UAB) and third-down ability (five catches on 10 targets in 30 career games) are well below average.

Ten. (can’t type 10. as it automatically indents and switches to 1.)

Offense will be better overall – Hock has a full offseason to digest the playbook, Addison will either free up JJ or be freed up by JJ, we should get our tackles back. IOL remains the same, running game will be the same.

Defense will be slightly better without Dumatell, but will need a bit to implement Flores’ scheme. But, we face better teams this season than last.

I think the Defense WILL be good, just not in 2023. Lacking legit pass rush and CB experience. There will be growing pains, much like the first years with Zim. Flores will have things running tip top in a few years. I expect more of the same from the offense, slightly, SLIGHTLY improved D, with a much harder schedule and no horse shoe up our ass in 1 score games. 8 wins is fair.

KJ, JJ, AT. Those 3 were down field. Highest chance for completion was KJ breaking open. He coulda said fuck it and Lauch it to JJ. Season is on the line. Those are the plays you make. Not the safe plays. Getting hit or not. Thats what he should have done. Stop defending him. You’re not his mom.

And you’re not the vain of his existance. JJ was triple teamed. Adam couldn’t beat man coverage. KJ – yea great, if he can throw the ball laying on his ass.
Perhaps you should go back and watch end of Bengals/Rams SB. Bengals had a fourth and short. Burrows also got pressure quickly from inside pressure. He held it a little too long and ended up throwing a golfer ball.Cousins could have held it a little longer, waiting for KJ to clear, but he’d be on his can too.
I’m not trying to be a jackass. I just never hear any real good thoughtful response on how we could have converted the play.
I’ve already heard all the bullshit.

I think there is gluten free cream of mushroom soup.
It all has to do with the thickening agent used. Traditional cream soups use wheat. Gluten free uses something else. Probably rice.

Eh, in my mind, the “Tritonal Italian” cooking goes back to immigrants in New York recreating recipes from the home land with the ingredients they could get locally here, and modifying from there. Italian Here and in Italy is very different. Both delicious. Cooking is meant to evolve and be expressive. I always cook with a recipe first and get it right, then I modify.

I just think people throw “traditional” around too much without actually having a real understanding of it’s meaning. People say “Authentic” or “Traditional” Italian but again, tomatoes aren’t native to Italy so what do you mean? Take inspiration and make it taste good. Traditional dog shit isn’t good just because it’s “traditional” lol

I think you are over analyzing things for the sake of over analyzing. Do you want to go back to the origin of man and grinding spices and harvesting plants for flavor to be traditional? Because we can lol. I explained what my idea of “Traditionally” Italian American cooking would be. When a majority of the cuisine we know and love started appearing.

You can think that if you want. But the word traditional can have lots of contexts and I think words are important. So if someone uses it in a way to mean not good or better I like to throw out that the word doesn’t mean what they think it means. It needs more descriptors. So when you say traditional you mean traditional early American Italian. See, now we all know what you actually mean.

Serbia’s gun laws don’t work because there are too many guns left from the wars but somehow new gun laws will work in the US that has an estimated 320,000,000 more guns at a rate of 4 times more than Serbia per capita (about 1.2 guns per person on average). A tiny country can’t control 7 million guns but somehow the US is going to take control of almost 330 million guns in a country founded on the right to bear arms. That makes sense.

Lifer

A supermajority is a filibuster-proof 60 or more Senate seats, allowing one party to pass legislation without votes from the other.

President Obama was sworn in on January 20, 2009 with just 58 Senators to support his agenda.
He should have had 59, but Republicans contested Al Franken’s election in Minnesota and he didn’t get seated for seven months.
The President’s cause was helped in April when Pennsylvania’s Republican Senator Arlen Specter switched parties.

That gave the President 59 votes — still a vote shy of the super majority.
But one month later, Democratic Senator Byrd of West Virginia was hospitalized and was basically out of commission.
So while the President’s number on paper was 59 Senators — he was really working with just 58 Senators.
Then in July, Minnesota Senator Al Franken was finally sworn in, giving President Obama the magic 60 — but only in theory, because Senator Byrd was still out.
In August, Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts died and the number went back down to 59 again until Paul Kirk temporarily filled Kennedy’s seat in September.
Any pretense of a supermajority ended on February 4, 2010 when Republican Scott Brown was sworn into the seat Senator Kennedy once held.Do you see a two-year supermajority?

Defiantly a mental health problem…that is a normalcy in society since the beginning of time and is not the problem but the symptom. What is the new factor and problem are weapons that can lethally kill in high volume. That’s not cars, knives, blades etc….it’s guns period.

Mental health issues are the problem, the cause, not the symptom. The symptom is violence, genital mutilation, etc. Treat the cause not the symptom. I think there was a time when safeties could come up and thump the hell out of receivers right after a catch. Smith was a really big hitter at this. this is illegal now. A thumper to me is someone who can come up, put his shoulder into a ball carrier and drop him in his tracks. I did not see much of that last year from Smith or anyone else on the defense.
Maybe go back and watch the Dallas/49ers playoff game. The 49er DB’s were throwing Zeke around like a rag doll – that’s thumping.

My error – ways speaking more broadly. I’m just not sure Smith’s particular style of hard hitting is as applicable as it was a few year’s ago. And Cine, just haven’t seen him play enough.
And while speaking broadly, we were a poor defense for a variety of reasons, scheme, etc. But I would maintain we are the poorest when it comes to level of physicality and this simply has to be better.

If you don’t like the level of talent and professionalism that Kirk Cousins brings to our beloved Vikings then you sir are not a person of reasonable expectations. He is simply the best QB this franchise has had. We would be fortunate to sign him to a longterm deal.

Read and understand what he is saying below, find the honesty and the clarity of his words in this moment that is absolutely the way you want your QB, your team leader, to handle the current situation. I’ll say it again, you want to belittle and chastise this man for doing everything the right way, the best way, that says a lot more about the person you are than the derogatory things you say about him.

———————————————————————————————————————-

-Kirk Cousins Knows He Has to Earn a Long-Term Future With the Vikings-Cousins is entering the final season of his contract for the first time in his Minnesota tenure.

“It’s more the norm than the exception,” Cousins said in a Wednesday press conference. “I think the exception is that you have something penciled in for future years. Most of our locker have no idea what’s coming in three or four months, let alone three or four years or next year. So, I feel like I’m one of the guys, like we’re all in this together, that’s the way this thing works, and I think it’s part of what makes this league great. Because everybody has an edge. Everybody’s working, everybody’s got something to prove. Nobody can operate with entitlement or comfort or put in less than their best, and I think that’s the best thing about our league.”

“I want to be in Minnesota,” he said. “Yeah, that’s kind of a no-brainer, so hopefully we can earn the right to do that. I’ve always said that. When I say I would like to be in Minnesota, there’s a lot of things I would like to have, but you’ve got to go earn it. That’s kind of where I’m at.”

I do not dispute his character, or effort.
I do not think he has the ability to improvise as well as some QBs.
I think this team needs a QB that has the ability to improvise, and make something out of nothing when a play goes to shit. If they had a better defense and O line, things could work out. Not seeing that happen.

Hated his first contract.
Hated his first extension even more.
He is currently on a deal that is good for the team and himself. That makes me less ragey. Although I hate the no trade clause.

Vikes will add a 2-3 year extension prior to the start of the season, once they realize they drafted a backup QB.

I have always said Kirk is a good person. I like him at the podium.

What I do NOT believe is his “I want to retire a Viking” BS.

TIMELINE:

1.)He said he wanted to retire a Viking last fall or shortly at the end of the 2022 season.

2.)After reports of contract negotiations, Kirk wanted 2024 and 2025 guaranteed. KAM only wanted 2024 guaranteed with team “flexibility” in 2025. So Kirk chose NOT to retire a Viking because he wanted his terms.

3.)Then, Kirks agent likely leaked out that Kirk was “offering a discount” to show how “reasonable” he was during negotiations.

4.)Kirk again now says he wants to end his career in Minnesota.

You are a sucker if you think Kirk is this “team” guy.
He is not. He is likely shooting for a “franchise tag” number.
Certainly he has the right to get as much money as possible.

Just say it then. Just say, I want to retire a Viking at my price.
He doesn’t. He is snake oil and you fall for it.

Fact remains he and his agent did offer a discount but asked for an extra year guarantee. That is not unreasonable by any stretch of the imagination.

Sure Vikings don’t have to agree to it but this has more to do with the Vikings being unreasonable than Cousins team. Kirk offered them a discount in return for an extra year, Vikings want their cake and eat it too by signing a top 7 QB at a discount with less years guaranteed. That is not Kirk’s issue or lack of honesty it’s the Vikings front office.

This is the point i’ve been making for a while that we’re in uncharted waters as far as Kirk goes and his contract.

2 years? Sure. Thats reasonable. but anything more than two years guaranteed is pushing it.

I understand them not drafting a QB this class and it makes sense why they waited, there are much better prospects next year. It would be hard to believe they can come in and replace Kirks production…

but from a value stand point…

This prospect is getting the keys to a high octane offense.

If Kirk splits..where does he go to play with the same level of talent he has here? All world WR couple of All pro Tackles and an All pro TE?

No where.

You’re correct. Tough to get your cake and eat it too.

Thats why I’m in the offer a 3/125-135m dollar deal with only 2 years guaranteed…if he plays well the next 3 years they won’t move on but if he doesn’t? They have an option.

Offering a QB, who will turn 36 by the time this deal starts, 2 years fully guaranteed is a pretty good deal. getting him for 30m is not reasonable especially with the quality of the play he’s put up..and this year could be a career year for him to back his case even more.

But his age plays a factor and it changes how long you SHOULD guarantee a deal for him.

36 for a guy like Kirk that doesn’t drink, smoke and take mind altering drugs in dark rooms I’d say he has 5+ years left easy. He can pocket pass doesn’t need his legs as much to perform his skill set so he’s the perfect QB to give a 4-5 year deal.

You sit here and say “Kirk won’t find as high octane an offense as the Vikings” Well pal way more unlikely the Vikings find a QB anywhere close to Kirks skill sets. Thus they should bend 100% and they will. Wait and see.

We saw what happened when Keenum took over in 2017.

Didn’t need to be Bradford level good, but just good enough with the weapons around.

36 is 36 and I would bet that the vast majority of starting QBs aren’t doing drugs or smoking.

Give me the list of QB who have played at a high level, over 36, and haven’t won an MVP, been OPOTY, or been to a conference championship game ever in their career and received a deal in the top 10 of their position group…

This isn’t 2017 so quit living in the past to justify the present and trying to sell getting a QB with less talent which is ridiculous to say in the first place. We’ll exclude Washington just beacuse.

DET – Goff
GB- Love
CHI – Fields
PHI – Hurts
NYG – Jones
DAL – Dak
TAM – ?
CAR – Young
NOR – Car
ATL – ?
SFO – ?
SEA – Geno
LAR – Stafford
AZ – Kyler
BUF – Allen
MIA – Tua
NYJ – Rodgers
NE – Jones/?
CIN – Burrow
BAL – Jackson
PIT – ?
CLE – Watson
JAX – Lawerance
TEN – Tanne
IND – Richardson
HOU – Stroud
KC – Mahomes
LAC – Herbert
DEN – Wilson
LVR – Jimmy

So… Of the ? we have Tampa, Atlanta, SF, Pit, and maybe the Pats. Do any of those offenses compare to the Vikings? Maybe ATL. Maybe.

TEN is up in the air with Tannehill but do they pivot in bring in another vet when they drafted Lance?

SF is going to run into cap constraints which are fixable but it’ll make for some tough decisions.

Where else could he end up? ATL might be looking to “play” for a high 1st round pick this year and get their QBOTF to pair with all their young playmakers…but as far as the rest of the list he could be able to go find some more money but the quality fo the offense he’s in wouldn’t be up to the level he’s at right now.

The hospital in GDV I work at made masks optional 14 months ago. I rarely see them anymore, I’ve only had one patient request I put one on during the consent process (I always wear a mask once we start a sterile procedure even as routine as a thyroid FNA).

Had a virtual meeting with some coworkers in BIL on teams yesterday and they were almost tearfully rejoicing being able to see each other’s faces again, as the mandate was only recently (two weeks) lifted. Mind you are still supposed to wear a mask in all face to face encounters but enforcement is lacking.

Thank goodness I moved. I actually had one of the screeners scold me one day for riding in on a bicycle without a mask on (as in I donned my mask just outside the door)…and another day I went for a bike ride over my lunch break and when I returned I bypassed the temperature check station (once a day requirement) and got yelled at for that as well. Nothing gives ya the warm and fuzzies more than someone with a HS diploma lecturing ya on infectious disease.

Gone fishin'

I'm a dad, husband, Army vet, believer, and a die-hard, life-long Vikings fan from the great state of North Dakota. I've been a Viking fan dating back to 1980, I've been covering the Vikings for nearly a decade, and I founded Skoloholics in 2022. I work in real estate and property management, I love spending time with family, working in the yard, doing anything in the outdoors, and as you can tell from my username, I love fishing. SKOL!!!!!!!!!!
