The fam and I attended the New Salem demolition derby yesterday, and it was a great time. I’ve never seen a radiator explode before, not until yesterday. Two cars collided, and when the one dude’s front end connected with the other dude’s rear end, his radiator exploded. It was so awesome, it looked like a gigantic water balloon filled with green water exploded in mid-air.

Minnesota Vikings News:

From Heavy.com, the Vikings expect to make progress next week on Danielle Hunter’s contract situation.

The Titans have signed Deandre Hopkins to a two-year deal reportedly worth $26 million, according to NFL.com.

The Jags and TE Engram have agreed to terms on a 3-year deal, the two parties came to agreement only 3 days prior to the franchise tag deadline, story fromi ESPN.

From CBS Sports, Miles Sanders said that Andy Dalton is ‘a future hall-of-famer’. I csn only assume Sanders was heavily intoxicated when he made that comment.

Video of the Day:

Here’s one of my favorite comedians of all-time, this is George Carlin and his entire ‘Back in Town’ show from 1996. I saw him live in Bismarck only five years prior to this show. Enjoiy!

After months of fruitless negotiations, the New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley, Dallas Cowboy’s Tony Pollard, and Las Vegas Raiders’ Josh Jacobs won’t be securing contract extensions in 2023.

The NFL’s franchise tag deadline for new deals expired at 4 p.m. ET without a breakthrough in talks for any of the three running backs. Now, each will have to play out the 2023 season on a one-year deal for $10.1 million — or consider not playing at all.

Sources close to Barkley and Jacobs said each would weigh their options if a new deal wasn’t reached, including potentially sitting out portions of training camp or regular-season games.

Pollard has signed his tag and is expected to report to training camp as normal.

Yeah, RB position has become draft, apply 5th year option (if a 1st round pick), franchise tag, then let them walk. The franchise tag for RBs is actually cheaper now than it was in 2015, crazy.

Kinda interesting to me that with over 13,000 yards (4th) and 97 TD’s (5th) in the NFL over the last three years, folks continue to label Cousins as a middling QB. Only Mahomes, Brady, Rodgers, and Allen have out-produced him, and he has one of the worst pass blocking lines in the league in front of him.

Putting this at the top for Lifer and JacksonVike in regards to our NATO discussion below.

You might remember a little thing called the Cold War from 1949 to 1990. East and West Germany were established after the Neuremberg trials (1945-1949). The Bundeswehr was established in 1955 in West Germany.  In 1956, conscription for all men between the ages of 18 and 45  was introduced after heavy discussions about re-militarizing Germany.  During the Cold War the Bundeswehr had a strength of roughly 495,000 military and 170,000 civilian personnel. The air force owned a large number of tactical combat aircraft and took part in NATO’s integrated air defense (NATINADS).  The navy was tasked to defend the “Baltic Approaches” and to contain the Soviet Navy’s Baltic Fleet.

When Germany was reunified in the Treaty on the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany (1990), Germany agreed to reduce the strength of its combined armed forces to no more than 370,000 men. In 1999, the NATO war on Yugoslavia in Kosovo was the first offensive conflict in which the German military actively took part since the Second World War.   Since the early 1990s, the Bundeswehr became more engaged in international peacekeeping missions in and around the former Yugoslavia, Cambodia, Somalia, Djibouti, Georgia, and Sudan.

Over the years though like most of the NATO countries, Germany invested less and less in their military and their NATO commitments. It wasn’t until Trump told NATO he was pulling the U.S. out unless they started paying their fair share, that Germany started to invest more heavily in their military and their NATO commitments.

In the military this is called “mission creep”. You start by investing a small amount in something and it grows like a cancer. The Vietnam War is a perfect example.

Russia’s invasion began with dozens of missile strikes on cities all over Ukraine before dawn on 24 February 2022. The mistake was made from the start by the administration. Russia was massing its forces for weeks before the invasion and behind the scenes diplomats were warning NATO and especially the U.S. not to intervene. All those soldiers and supplies were just sitting there in the open. Sitting ducks. Unfortunately our President as well as other world “leaders” were cowed by Putin into doing nothing. Once the invasion was underway, our President decided “sanctions” was the best way to stop a military engagement, which is laughable. Then, slowly, inch by inch, we have been drug into this protracted war, and as you say, invested Billions of taxpayer dollars.

Everyone is afraid of Putin. I will tell you Putin was afraid of Trump though. I seriously doubt he would have ever attempted this with Trump in office because Trump told him if he ever tried it, he would level Putin’s troops in a single day. Had Trump been in charge and Putin started staging up troops and supplies, it would have ended badly for him, and basically in a single day. That is the course of action I supported, but the administration felt they could not risk entering into a war with Russia. Putin knew exactly who he was dealing with.

Biden thinks he can drain Russia’s resources by draining ours. Bad plan poorly executed.

I agree, Neo Naziism is definitely on the rise in Germany, but personally the labeling as a “far right extremist group” has always been a political ploy by the left. Adolph Hitler, the leader of the Nazi’s was not far right. He was a Marxist and a Socialist. Just my take that as a conservative I completely disagree Nazi’s should be labeled as “far right extremists”. They are extremists, but associating them with my core beliefs is insulting and indeed far fetched.

Historically understanding the context that Adolph Hitler used the Marxist / Socialist movement as a way to gain power in Germany and then quickly pivoted to fascism which is a right wing doctrine is accurate fact then and accurate still today. Hence the historical quote below by Martin Niemöller.

That is fact that conservative principles today align in lockstep with fascism cannot be denied with any level of debate. Protect corporations, small or no government oversight, separated economic classes of have and have nots. They’ll be a great economy but sorry you’re the working class and will not ever be in the circle of the elites. Equal rights will not exist and second class citizens will be the norm and enforced by law.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
—Martin Niemöller

Lifer Was Comrade Stalin a socialist?
And today’s conservative principals align with fascism?
Hear’s the typical MAGA guy I see around here. He drives a pickup to work, he’s a carpenter. He’ married and has two kids. His wife works too. They go to church on Sundays. He likes to hunt and fish, so yes he has a gun. He pays his bills and doesn’t understand why others don’t. He’s OK with teaching about sex in school, but probably not before they’re 12 years old
He sounds a lot like the generation after generation of Americans that have made this country what it is. He’s middle class, he fights the wars, he pays his taxes. And he likes his freedom..
He’s conservative I’d guess you’d call him. Doesn’t seem like a fascist to me.

Stalin devoted himself to Marx’s socio-political theory, Marxism, which was then on the rise in Georgia, one of various forms of socialism opposed to the empire’s governing Tsarist authorities.

The typical MAGA guy principles were developed and evolved under a system slanted to white conservative rule and advantages. As our nation ethnically changes they have issues with that change, which is inevitable.

The difference is the political leaders use race, gun rights and abortion laws to trigger and give conservatives who dislike people of color, womens equal rights and religious pro life doctrine an excuse to vote against their own rights, which is fascinating but we’ve seen it over and over with the conservative right constituents, who died 3 to 1 in red states from covid a FACT. So the truth is there if you’re willing to see it and accept it. Brainwashed wingers can even be honest with themselves to admit it.

Fascism refers to a way of organizing society with an emphasis of autocratic government, dictatorial leadership, and the suppression of opposition. The word entered English as a result of Mussolini’s political group, members of which were called ‘fascisti’ in Italy.

Hate to bring this to your attention, but these are leftist traits not Conservatives… at all. The left wants to control everything, take rights and freedoms away in the name of “the greater good” and definitely destroy anyone who opposes them (see Donald Trump).

You described fascism completely incorrectly. You believe the propaganda of the left, which is long on rhetoric and short on truth.

I gave the correct definition of what fascism is, and it aligns with the left’s belief that Government must control and rule the common populace. Socialism doesn’t make people lives better. It makes them slaves to the political elite. You want slavery to the leftist socialists. I do not.

Lifer
Admin
Reply to  No longer New Vikings Fan
17 July 2023 7:42 pm

No you are completely backwards on your definition of fascism and most importantly it’s relation to socialism which is the complete opposite.

Fascism: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

Autocratic: relating to a ruler who has absolute power.
“the constitutional reforms threatened his autocratic power”

  • taking no account of other people’s wishes or opinions; domineering.
  • “an autocratic management style”

How you could have that completely backwards is almost concerning to the level you’ve been so indoctrinated that you can’t read or understand the meanings and definitions of words. A fascist government is headed by a dictatorial leader, there is nothing in socialism that constitutes that hence the term SOCIAL. Socialism is a shared society of resources and equal shared values both monetarily and economically, you know the shit you conservatives bitch about constantly paying your fair share or having to pay for others. Also socialism follows a constitution of laws, the other thing conservatives like to carry around and spout about but yet want a dictatorial leader like Trump to tear down the government and nationalize everything to be control by corps and a few individuals. How the hell do you turn all that in to leftist traits is completely wrong.

Happy Monday Skolskeeters!

JJ in the 99 Club – as I predicted months ago….

Went to a birthday party over the weekend. One of my ‘best men’ at my wedding. Grilled. Chilled. Good times. Then we played some Madden.

I’ve played this guy literally thousands of times in Madden. In the early days I would dominate. Just crush him. But he always came back to play, just loving the chance to compete. He got better and eventually became my equal. He’d tell you that I lead the all-time series, I’d tell you it’s because of the early days when he wasn’t any good.

So we play. I take the Vikes (duh) and he takes Philly. Great roster, mobile QB, tough out. I win the toss and defer – always want the ball to start the 2nd half.

This guy is the best KR on Madden I’ve ever played – back in the day he would take back a KO once a game. Knowing all this I kick to him anyway. He’s got Quez Watkins, who’s fast AF and he promptly shoves the ball up my fat ass for a 98 yard score. Down 0-7 with 11 seconds gone from the game. Yikes.

Vikes ball. I’m not fazed by his quick score – panic in those situations and a few bad plays turns into an avalanche of points. I’m methodical coming out. He’s playing a loose 3/4 and the occasional 3-3-5. I’m able to eat with Dalvin between the gaps. 7 yards, 11 yards, pop a stretch for 22 down the sideline. Hit Reagor on an under, pick up a block from Hock and get down the seam to about the 15 – I’m throwing quick routes on short drops. High % throws until I get a feel for his D plan, which in the past has been to bring pressure – which is what I want. I come out in Gun 5WR – I’ve got a couple hitch routes, one hot under, one slant and JJ running a skinny fade to the back corner – expecting a blitz I’m looking for one of the hitch routes. He goes straight man, and doubles JJ. Line holds up so I turn it into the Elway draw – as soon as I see the defenders turn their backs I take off with Cap’n Kirk, walking in untouched. Score tied 7-7.

We trade big plays after that. He gets a 70 yard score to AJ Brown. I get JJ free on a deep in and he breaks a tackle and gets shoestringed at the 3. Matty powers in from there. He gets another long score with a Hurts zone-read that I had dead-to-rights and missed badly on the tackle. I go 3 and out but he promptly throws a pick 6 to Kris Boyd after misreading zone coverage – threw it right to him. We trade field goals. I get a stop and use Kene for the one play a game he’s good for (stamina drops quickly) a quick screen out of singleback double TE. It’s a big play – I get to the 20. Hit KJ on a middle post by himself in the end zone to take a 6 point lead, and in Vikings fashion I push the kick left. No good. I’m up 30-24. 3 minutes left. He works a great drive, gets behind Pat Pete with Watkins and I’m forced to lay him out to prevent the score. 45 yard penalty down to my 4. 1:15 left. 1st and goal. Runs a dive to Miles Sanders. Walks in. PAT good. I fair catch the KO (Kene gassed). 1:09 left, 2 TO. Money time. I get Jalen Nailor free on a dagger route for a 15 yard gain. Hock again down the seam for 12. I run a draw to Dalvin that gets past his 45. Clock down to :41. Find Thielen on an out route to his 30. Damn near throw a pick to Slay on a slant to JJ when he jumped the route. Run a dive to the 22 with Matty. TO. Run another dive. Holding penalty. With the runoff the clock is at :19. I run one more dive. This time Ham, and get the ball to his 30. Call my last TO. He calls a TO to ice my kicker.

Snap…. spot…. Aaaaaaaaand

DOINK!!!

Off the post, no good, Vikes lose.

Skol!

No.
It’s the deadline to a long term deal.

Players who receive the tag are not permitted to sign new multi-year deals with their team after the deadline (July 17). That means if they do not agree to a long-term contract by the deadline, they can only play the 2023 season under the one-year tag.

100% disagree. No way KAM will let him leave and no way Kirk want’s to leave MN and have to move his family again and learn a new offense, again even if it is a stack team like San Fran. It will be year 3 in the same offense with the VIkings in a much more competitive position flush with cap space and draft picks. He’ll stay, KAM will pay him as he should.

That was too soon to formulate an opinion of him. One draft does or does not make a good or bad GM. How he handles Kirk will be the final straw for me with him and if he doesn’t know it, probably does, it will determine his tenure with the Vikings. I predict he let’s Kirk go he’s gone in 3-4 years.

I’m not reading any minds here. This is as simple as it gets. KAM’s background is in finance. He has to get the cap situation resolved. The Vikings are over extended in “credit” for the cap, i.e. they have a lot of players with void years on their contracts, and a lot dead cap money to pay back. Sooner or later, when you’re in a hole, you have to stop digging. The only way KAM is bringing Cousins back, is on a deal where the team has “outs” (trade or cut without financial impact). Cousins isn’t going to sign a deal like that. They had their talks, the Cousins camp made an offer, KAM declined it. They are moving on without Cousins next year.

Yes, we’re on for a 6 pack JR… I trust my takes on both camps. Cousins will never sign a contract where the team can trade him, or cut him without still having to pay him. KAM will never sign a player to a contract that doesn’t have team “flexibility” to trade or cut the player.

JRobert

Well, as you know, my source is pretty darn close to this.
That aside, from a practical standpoint. Rams win SB with McVay offense, Stafford and Kupp. We bring KOC in here to duplicate that with Kirk and JJ and our offense. As you have pointed out, this offense requires a lot of the QB to read defenses, read routes by receivers, and then deliver accurate throws. And for us, the OB has to be able to take a little beating too.
So, Kirk and JJ have prospered, learned the offense and are about to now have two years under their belts. We could very easily have a top 5 offense this year – that will put folks in the seats.
so you let the QB go? QB’s that run this type of offense don’t grow on trees. And if I’m the owner, I’m not going to be real happy if that happens given the previous two year’s investment.

I didn’t say I agree with it, I said it’s going to happen. I know the organization is making the best of this, basically putting the conversation on hold till next March. I agree with all your takes, but in the end, KAM is going younger, cheaper, and more flexible on a contract than Cousins.

Note they have openly said they will “do whatever is necessary” to retain JJ. In regards to Cousins, they rejected a reportedly “under market value” deal with him because of flexibility issues i.e. guaranteed money. Cousins won’t sign a deal where the team controls him. He just won’t.

What it had to change was him off the field and your opinion of how good of a leader and person he is. We’ have not had this level of exposer to off the field Kirk. He is by far the most polished and prepared QB using everything at this disposal to be the best he can be. I challenge you to find any QB that works harder than him on being prepared. Cousins has had 7 OC’s in his 8 years as a starter, and most of them were first time OC’s trying to figure it out. The system KOC brought in is very complex and requires a tremendous amount of time on task by every offensive player to master. In week 18 last year, we watched Cousins throw a fade route to the corner of the end zone to… nobody. Thielen inexplicably took the corner (who was playing inside leverage) to the post after head faking to the corner route.

Mahomes sat out most of his first year behind Alex Smith, learning the offense and getting indoctrinated to the pro world. He’s played in the same offense under Reid now for six straight seasons. That’s a piece most folks don’t really pick up on.

Believe me, I trust you that KOC runs a sophisticated offense that requires a lot of brain power by the QB as well as a great arm.
that’s why I said earlier, if you have someone who can do this, not the smartest idea to let let him go.
And not so much appreciated, to play QB for the Vikings, you must do all this behind a pretty crappy oline and be able to take a beating.

I agree… saw it happen in Washington up close and personal as they say. Bruce Allen just screwed that organization to the bone. Ever since Cousins left, their offense has been shit, and their QB’s haven’t panned out. In the five seasons since Cousins left, he’s thrown 153 TD’s and the combined total passing TD’s of the 11 or 12 QB’s the Redskins have trotted out is 95.

Fair. Seems like a super guy, and I would certainly enjoy meeting him if I ever had the chance.

Still, there is a night and day difference between him and Mahomes.
Look at the play where Mahomes knows the WR lined up in the wrong spot, but also realized it would work, and rolled with the improv play.

I am not smart enough to know if Kirk has the freedom to do things like that.
I know he did not under Zimmer.

The show did make me drink a little more kool aid, so I bet the over on wins this year (8.5).

I am in my summer “hopium” stage. Hope it lasts at least until October this year.

I like all three QBs on that show. I feel bad for Marcus that he has to live in Philly for a while now. But he has a solid career going as a backup.

Mahomes was in his 6th year in the offense last year, and the offense is so mature they give the players a day of the week (Wednesdays) to create their own plays. Cousins was in his first year of an offense (again) and clearly the team had issues with play calls in regards to execution (receivers running the wrong routes, etc). There is a massive difference between what Mahomes is doing in Kansas City with Andy Reid and what Cousins has had to deal with in Minnesota.

I am devoid of hope. The world is nothing but darkness. Long walks Magee will win nothing and just continue to get pummeled and keep his masseuse in business.

Changed nothing. I already knew Kirk was a good person and a bit of a dork. What I saw was one QB who works with his team and then spends extra time working out and preparing and a second QB who goes to practice, isn’t always confident, then gets massages and goes for long walks.

Going into the second to last week before training camp starts. Deandre Hopkins indicated he’s signing with the Titans yesterday. Will Cook sign anywhere this week?

and… first…

Check this out NVF. Rory with that 2 iron shot from 200+ in to a 30 mph wind yesterday.

Look at him, looks like an easy practice swing, no tension, clearing the left side, absolutely nothing forced but the reality is it’s his hardest iron swing with a driving iron in to a blistering wind. Knocked it 10’ from the hole. Amazing.

Yep… beautiful impact position. Certainly looks like he’s ready for the Open this week. I have a meeting with EUCOM Thursday at 2 a.m. my time. Guess I’ll be up if there’s early round coverage going on.

Sounds like the US gave the green light to train Ukrainian pilots on the
F-16 fighter jets. The ole F-16…probably the best fighter jet ever produced. It and the A-10, which they should send a few of those over as well.

Yeah, Biden did that last week. Been in discussions for over a year though. Poland and a couple other countries will do the training. Not every NATO country has F-16’s though. For instance Germany can’t participate because they don’t have F-16’s.

Do they choose not to have them, aren’t allowed to have them or have an alternative they think is as good or better? I’ve read many a pilot say if you could pick one jet to fly what would it be and 9 out of 10 say F-16.

Germany hasn’t fielded a competent air force since around 2014. Ursala von der Leyen admitted that, due to the poor state of the Bundeswehr’s equipment, Germany was no longer able to fulfill its NATO commitments. In 2020 after Trump told NATO they had to start pulling their own weight, Germany was looking at a number of fighters to buy, including the Boeing FA-18 Super Hornet. In early 2022 though, Germany announced they intend to buy 35 Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jets instead of the FA-18 Super Hornets to replace the Tornado, the only aircraft Germany possesses capable of carrying US nuclear weapons.  F-16’s were never considered by Germany for some reason.

I thought possibly post WW2 they weren’t allowed via a pact to have a fully functional Air Force. Seems they just chose not to invest in one since NATO supports them. I agree they should step up and pay in to NATO and their own Air Force.

I thought this as well. I was under the impression that Germany was not allowed to even have a “military” after WW11. That is why their police force was basically their military. Maybe something changed when they joined NATO.

So I guess Cook is going to sign with the Titans to finalize the superbowl duo deal that Cook discussed last month?

Tannehill, Henry, Cook and Hopkins.
