He got one of the best QB’s in the league. I wouldn’t say Cousins was a “miss”. I think Zimmer hated him for some reason though. He just wanted to build the offense around Cook. He fired DeFlip for throwing the ball too much in his first year. DeFlip also didn’t build the offense to accentuate Cousins strengths. Quite the opposite. He insisted Cousins rewire his brain and instincts to run the new offense. Much like KOC did this year.
I didn’t mean to imply Kirk with regard to Rick, it was obvious Kirk was at a minimum a decent qb. He struggled otherwise finding adequate QB play for a decade.
Ah soooo… got it. For the record I was always a Sam Bradford fan. I think if he could have stayed healthy he might could have set some NFL records.

Bradford had more arm talent than anyone I’ve ever seen, but he was a huge injury risk and ended up a bad trade for exactly that reason.

I was just saying that Dak had a pretty similar injury and rehabbed and returned pretty successfully. The original statement is that bone breaks may be easier to rehab but compared to what? I guess, at least he seems to be putting the effort to come back and hopefully there’s some hope for him still.
Oh, I took him to mean compared to soft tissue or ligament injury like Booth has. I do think Cine will come back fine though, I just meant his rehab won’t be so simple as a standard fracture. Most important thing for his compound fracture was avoiding the infection like Alex Smith ended up with.
Gotcha. The Smith infection was horrible. Hopefully this kid can come back healthy and get what’s between his ears squared away too. Everybody said AP would never be the same, who knows.

Damn, that could be fun. I think we’re at about 75 inches this year, another 27 would be a new record for Bismarck. I didn’t realize that Bismarck only got 101 inches in 1996-97, we got a lot more than that at the farm that year. I was helping my brother on his ranch that year, it sucked, lost nearly 1/3 of his calves & a few cows.
Theres pictures of me as a kid playing in the aftermath of that storm but I have no recollection of it. My Dad talks about it too, they also lost cattle. Bismarck has had bigger storms but over all it has been a pretty snowy winter. If it means we are no longer in drought this summer Ill be happy. Been a while since iv seen everything green.

Since everyone is ranting about KC today, my take is this:
I think Kirk is a really good QB. He plays well enough and consistently enough to win the majority of games, which is what you want and need to win the big one. He has faults like all QB’s, but they are not extensive.
At some point, the Vikings do have to move on and find someone new, younger. Is it then that everyone who hates Kirk will realize the grass is always greener and likely be disappointed in some of their criticisms of Kirk and appreciate him more. But, everyone loves the prospect of greatness and improvement at the position, and we can’t have that until we get change. Therein lies the problem – can’t improve if we don’t try. But there is a lot of room for downside, which is what we will find out and see when we do move on, because I don’t think we’re lucky enough to walk into a rookie phenom. And then the QB will really lose us games and we’ll all appreciate Kirk more for at least a while. Hopefully we do get someone good moving forward, but that is less likely than a downgrade for possibly an extended period of time.
But we do need to bite the bullet at some point.

Kirk is entering his age 35 season. Most QBs outside of Brady begin decline at that point and some quickly fall off a cliff quickly. Whether you think Kirk is good enough or not, the Vikings need to start succession planning.
Personally, I think Cousins has 5 good years left in him. He takes great care of himself and as you noted Brady has played well into his 40’s.

I will say the longer a QB plays well in this league, the higher the price goes up to keep him. Cousins can “out price” himself. Look what the Packers did with Rodgers. The market rate for a seasoned QB who produces at a high level continues to climb. Obviously having a QB on a rookie deal that can match a seasoned pro’s production is the Holy Grail here. The thing is, teams reach for that (like the Redskins did with RGIII) and they end up being terrible for a decade.
Brady was smart enough to realize that an insanely high cap hit equals a mediocre team.
That narrative seems to be the last gasp effort of Cousins detractors when they have to admit he’s actually a really good QB. He should take a pay cut.

I would also argue that almost everyone that complains about Kirk needing to take a pay cut, has never walked into their bosses office and said, “I’m overpaid can you please pay me less.”
Comparison isn’t realistic, though. None of us are on a contract for a company who has a salary cap.
But every company has limited funds to some extent. If my boss came to me and said that the business is not doing well, will you take a pay cut, I would probably say no and walk.
I definitely would not go to my boss and tell them since you seem to be making less money I will take a pay cut so your profit margins are better.
If my salary was preventing my place of employment from hiring necessary people, and I was making WAY more than I needed, then yes, I’d happily take a pay cut so that I could be on a winning team.
You can’t compare the two work environments. The NFL is a unique situation, there is no comparable situation in the real world. So many disparities between being an NFL player & having a normal career. Hell, the pricks are even exempt from anti-trust law, two completely different situations.
It’s a narrative that has been debunked many times.

Well Cousins was fourth in passing yards and tied fifth for passing TD’s this year, and has thrown 153 TD’s and almost 21,000 yards since becoming a Viking. So if he’s better than that it’s going to be an elite level of play. I mean really… Cousins could throw for 5,000 yards, 45 TD’s and complete 70% of his passes and folks here would say “yeah but what about that one throw where he missed JJ by 2 feet?”

Kirk’s all right, but all I care about is a Super Bowl at this stage. I don’t think he can get anyone through three playoff games, so he is expendable. He doesn’t have to be expendable immediately if no other decent options for improving the team exist.
No guarantee the next guy will be any good either, but I don’t mind that. Got to shoot your shots, and if Vikings win, cool. If they suck, well, I have zero issue shutting the games off and doing something else. I’m in the cornfield all October anyway.
I’m more about not getting stuck in ruts with the Vikings at this point. For example, if KOC and Kwesi don’t have us in the NFC Championship or very close to it by year three, they should not have a year four. Move on. There are only 32 NFL teams. There are always new options to explore.
And build the trenches, build the trenches, build the trenches. All moves serve the trenches and QB. Everything else should get in line.
I think you make some good points. If we had dominant or even good trenches, we probably wouldn’t be having the conversation about QB. Certainly with an average defense we would have went further this year, no doubt. That shouldn’t be held against him. He had a couple stinkers this year, but Kirk played well enough to win nearly every game this year. We can’t outshoot everyone, and he shouldn’t be held to the standard that we can/should do that.

That’s a good point, but that also doesn’t mean other teams weren’t better than us that year. The best team doesn’t always win the super bowl. It also doesn’t mean the refs don’t screw us and favor certain teams heavily (a whole other issue altogether, which I think is just as big of a reason we haven’t won anyway as much as other factors, and likely why a SB just isn’t something I have realistic expectations of ever).
But I think it’s valid to say Kirk has improved since then in a few ways by different amounts, and he now has stability in areas he hasn’t in the past. He is plenty good to win consistently, and has certainly shown that this year.
I don’t disagree with any of that. Until he wins & goes deep in the playoffs, he hasn’t, and that won’t change until he does.
Until the Vikings win and go deep into the playoffs GF. Our defense was crap, our O-line was crap, our running game was crap, our kicker was crap. The ONLY thing that wasn’t crap on the team was Cousins and the receivers. So let’s be honest. Winning 13 games wasn’t because our defense, O-line, running game, or kicker was great. It was because Cousins and the receivers were.
I think tomorrow…. Everyone should switch sides of the Kirk argument…

The owner and team President hated him because he put so much egg on their faces for drafting RGIII. Bruce Allen didn’t want to pay him what he was worth and kept low balling him on contract offers which Cousins refused, forcing Allen to franchise tag him twice. Then the 3rd year the franchise tag was too much and Allen had to let him walk. Since then they have suffered through a plethora of QB’s that never remotely matched Cousins level of play.

Basement leak update:
Looks like the tie rod was rusting out and causing a void in the poured foundation. Thought it was cinderblock, but guess not which is good. Guy dug it out and filled with epoxy for 400 bucks. All day baby, hopefully it holds

My house was built in 1897. I bought it, next year found out the concrete in the basement was absolute shit. Had to repour the entire basement floor. But put in drain tile, a proper sump pump etc… They PVC plumbed the sump pump out. Last weekend I was in my basement where I keep all my music equipment (smart I know) and the sump pump wouldn’t turn off. The water was steaming hot. The PVC drainage outside was froze so the pump wasn’t turning off. Bought a new pump, etc… oof!
Heard to many nightmares about basements. My garage is partially underground so i can hide in the case of a tornado.
If we have a tornado I’m gonna ride it like Pecos Bill.
Man that sucks…but it sounds like your electronics didn’t get ruined.
Our basement has had major water issues 4 times since we moved in 20 years ago. We have 2 sumps but no drain tile….I know drain tile would likely fix it but too cheap and stubborn to do it. We finally got smart enough to take the carpet out of the basement and put in water resistant tiling.
Yeah, the water didn’t actually back up just that it was literally like steaming hot, like almost burned to the touch when I was scooping water out lol.
So how is your sump pump fed without drain tile? When the guy redid the basement floor he discovered the sump pump I had whoever originally put it in basically poked it full of holes. The thing was always bone dry. Because water would seep in and then just go right back into the ground out the sump pump essentially not removing water away from the foundation.
I am not an aquatic engineer. So not sure…both sumps run quite a bit though.

If he had a career of being on a good team every year like Brady was for 20 years in New England, with the same OC almost every year, what would his career look like? I don’t know. I do know on bad teams with bad O-lines and a different OC every year he’s one of the best in the league at scoring TD’s.

Fran is in the HoF but he never was a very productive QB. Different era for sure, but Fran threw 239 TD’s in 177 games. Cosins has thrown 252 TD’s in 142 games (137 starts). Why is Fran in the HoF? He was a very exciting player to watch. Cousins may or may not end up in the HoF but he is still by far and away the most productive QB of all time for the Vikings.

The reason Fran is in the HoF, is more due to the fact that Fran changed the way the QB position is played. At the time of Fran there were very few mobile QBs.
