Well, no news explosion yesterday, as many fans were hoping for. The Vikings chose not to do anything with Za’Darius Smith or Dalvin Cook……yet. I think many of us expected them to pull off a trade or release one or both players prior to each of them accumulating guaranteed contract money yesterday. I’m fine with the move, or lack of a move. The team can still trade either player, or could choose to keep either or both players. I could see Za’Darius Smith sticking around, but I’d be very surprised to see Cook return to Minnesota on his current contract. You just never know, though.

Minnesota Vikings News:

The Vikings signed DL Dean Lowry, formerly of the Packers. Great signing to bolster the defensive line.

From Vikings.com, Byron Murphy & Josh Oliver are excited for the Vikings culture, coaches, and……..Harrison Smith, and they list five things to know about Dean Lowry.

Video of the Day:

Here’s a great bit from George Carlin, very applicable for this time of year, baseball vs. football. Enjoy!

He would’ve never got the negative press here and could’ve rode off into the sunset…

now in Carolina he’s gotta get tore up.

From PFF…..

MINNESOTA VIKINGS

• Additions: TE Josh Oliver, Edge Marcus Davenport, CB Byron Murphy Jr., DT Dean Lowry

• Re-signings: QB Nick Mullens, C Garrett Bradbury, LS Andrew DePaola, K Greg Joseph,RB Alexander Mattison

• Losses: DT Dalvin Tomlinson, LB Eric Kendricks, WR Adam Thielen, CB Cameron Dantzler, CB Patrick Peterson

Oliver — The former third-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars dealt with a few injuries in the early years of his career but has become a success story by cashing in here on a strong multi-year deal that includes incentives that could reportedly push the value up to $24 million.

We have seen pretty strong contracts for predominantly blocking tight ends in years past, including players like Nick Boyle and Tyler Kroft, who signed for similar deals. That’s what this is here, with Oliver amassing just 26 receptions for 230 yards over his first four NFL seasons.

Kevin O’Connell wants to be able to operate more effectively out of 12 personnel, and Oliver’s 74.6 run-blocking grade in 2022 ranked second among tight ends with at least 100 run-blocking snaps on the season.

After Minnesota traded for tight end T.J. Hockenson, they’re likely about to pay him near the top of the position market and could approach $25 million per year in spending on their top two tight ends, which would comfortably lead the NFL following the trade of Jonnu Smith to the Atlanta Falcons.

Davenport — Since Davenport entered the league in 2018, his 17.8% pass-rush win rate and 13.9% pressure percentage are both top-20 marks among edge defenders. He’s also earned a very respectable 82.1 run-defense grade for his career, which ranks 16th over the span. Davenport has five straight campaigns grading above 70.0, but injuries have been his biggest issue.

With the Vikings picking him up, it likely signals that they’ll move on from Za’Darius Smith and slot Davenport into his role. Davenport has always been an athletic edge player, and he could earn a bigger deal next year if he’s able to produce for Minnesota. He and Danielle Hunter will form one of the most athletic edge duos in the entire NFL.

Davenport understandably signs a one-year flier, as teams may have been wary to commit long-term to a player who has one season eclipsing 500 snaps, but he was arguably the best edge rusher available in free agency. This could prove to be a very worthwhile gamble.

Murphy — Minnesota needed to add at cornerback after waiving Cameron Dantzler earlier in the week and then losing veteran Patrick Peterson to the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency.

Murphy can play out wide and in the slot, both areas Minnesota can stand to dramatically improve, and new Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores gets his No. 1 cornerback. Murphy has three straight seasons with coverage grades above 63.0, and he has allowed an explosive play of 15 or more yards on 1.8% of his targets in coverage over the last two seasons, a top-25 mark at the position.

Bradbury — The Vikings bring back Bradbury, who had a career year both as a run-blocker and pass-blocker last season. While he hasn’t quite lived up to the hype as the 18th overall selection from the 2019 NFL Draft, his 67.5 PFF grade ranked 11th among centers last season. And at 27 years old, he is still young enough to keep improving.

Our contract projection here was intentionally over-inflated because of Bradbury’s draft status as a former first-round pick. And while he has always been a good fit as a run-blocker in an outside zone system, the cataclysmic leap as a pass-blocker in 2022 — his 68.1 pass-block grade in 2022 was 25 points higher than his previous high — needs to continue for this to work out.

Obviously, Minnesota thinks it can, but nonetheless, this is a fair deal for both parties even if he never becomes great in that facet.

Lowry — Lowry had a bit of a down year in 2022 but is a very dependable three-to-five-technique interior defender who has always handled a sizable workload. The former Packer was highly productive in 2021, generating 42 QB pressures and five sacks, with his 10.3% pressure rate good for 15th among interior defenders.

New defensive coordinator Brian Flores has seen the departure of Dalvin Tomlinson, who profiles as more of a zero-to-three-technique, and adds more of a pass-rusher here opposite the big Harrison Phillips.

PFF WAR GAINED: -1.206

PFF FREE AGENCY GRADE: A-

I think he’s worth a 3 yr deal, last yr being a team opt out, for around $6 or $8. There are so many top to mid players that never meet the level of play for what they’re signed for. Shit Pat Peterson just got $14 mill for 2 yrs and Shelley played better in 1 on 1 coverage than he did.

It was around 50 here when we teed off. Around 57 when we finished. Cold to me. The guys I played with were great. I’m sure they both broke 80. Water on almost every hole. Had to place your shots in between lakes on a number of holes. I just hit lots of well placed shots and worked my way around the course. Had to not only hit it straight, but really control your distance too. I hit a lot shots in the center of the club today.

KAM is doing a great job in a lot of areas that needs to be recognized. Sitting back and just criticizing every decision is lazy at best. Handling things professionally matters…and word gets around the NFL players circles on who treats you fair and with respect and who does not.

Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah proves willing to make the necessary changes to the rosterTo watch how the Vikings operated in the past two weeks, it’s clear that while sentiment might dignify goodbyes, it won’t delay them.

At age 32, Patrick Peterson enjoyed a resurgent 2022 season with the Vikings. He spoke openly about his desire to remain with the team for his 13th NFL season; it seemed possible heading into free agency that the eight-time Pro Bowl player would be back in Minnesota for 2023.
And on Monday, after he agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal with the Steelers, Peterson had nothing but kind things to say about negotiations with the Vikings that ultimately ended without a contract.
“It was all clean, good, adult business, how it’s supposed to be,” Peterson said on his “All Things Covered” podcast. “There wasn’t curveballs. It was how it was supposed to be, and I can’t do nothing but appreciate that.”

Trust me, I’m a WVU alumni…I know my players. Here’s what was written about him (and again I like him as a prospect) but this is accurate.

Overview
Ford-Wheaton is a big, long wideout specializing in downfield jump-ball victories. He’s a high-riser with an above-average wingspan, but he rarely slips past press coverage easily and fails to separate like he should relative to the blazing speed he showed at the NFL Scouting Combine. He’s a raw route runner with tight hips and a lack of attention to detail that allows defenders to anticipate breaks and contest his catches on a regular basis. Ford-Wheaton has the size and hand strength to post victories on 50-50 throws, but he will need to prove he can consistently play to his athletic ability.

As far as corners..We need them imo…for the past 3 seasons in a row we have had injuries at the corner position and our lack of depth exposed when we have our 3rd or 4th corner starting. We just got lucky last year that Shelley turned out to be a good player.

I’m on the fence with trading Cook. Now I don’t want to pay him $14mill either, there’s 1 or 2 good FA with the $6 mill extra his making at $14. I’d like to see a $6 mill pay reduction and pay him $8. He’s earned and is worth that imo. Otherwise yes let him go to trade for a 4th, won’t get more than that teams know we want to deal his cap hit.

We need them imo…for the past 3 seasons in a row we have had injuries at the corner position and our lack of depth exposed when we have our 3rd or 4th corner starting. We just got lucky last year that Shelley turned out to be a good player.

He played great overall so I don’t agree with you. He had one bad missed tackle on Wilson against the Jets but outside of that he was great on contested catches and helped us win more than a few games with pass defended.

if he was so good/great why isn’t he signed by someone yet?

In your response you basically agreed with my previous point…best of a shitbag bunch

So we need more corners is the point and he’s not being signed because of what he’s asking for not that he’s a bad player.

doesn’t mean they need to draft 3 late round CBs.

Ok….”mick”

You said….”shitbag”….is that not….*clears throat*…bad??

Also I drafted 2 late round CB’s not 3 so you’re exaggerating things to try and falsely defend your position…my first of 3 corners was Rd 2.

Again I don’t think you realize what you’re typing because AGAIN you’ve gotten your own explanation of your comments wrong. You said you weren’t calling Shelley “bad” now you’re saying you did but not the rest of the CB room?? You said he was bad, own it. He wasn’t, we were lucky he wasn’t, my point stands as correct and the fact you can’t mentally process that is not my problem it’s yours. 3 CB could happen and I’d be fine with it.

I don’t think Shelley is thst good.

You’re all spun up about this.

Shelley is not that good.

the Vikings CB room was not that good.

comments about WV and you being a stupid lib are jokes. Quit being a little baby.

the Vikings won’t draft 3 CBs in the draft.

I don’t think Shelley is thst good.

he was just the best of the shitbag bunch.

I’m saying he looked better than he actually was compared to those around him.

those are pretty consistent comments….

I didn’t say bad but not as good as Vikings fans are making him out to be.

My feelings are hurt I want reparations.

You have moderately poor communication skills but I will give you a pass considering this is a sports blog.

No one said Shelley was great, he’s not, but he is a solid depth piece and if you see his PFF rankings league wide when he played he was absolute starter level without question.

No the Vikings won’t draft 3 corners but the point is our depth is shitbag now but a tad better with Murphy who is our only legitimate starter.

Yeah I’m very familiar with it. Their coach Dana Holgorsen was at WVU with Will Grier among others and left for Houston. It’s not a scheme that translates to the NFL but it is a good offense. Not to say Tune couldn’t translate to the NFL he could it’s just you can’t say from his stats he can.

Mick

Yeah that was a comp for him for sure was Grier.

I think more than anything….these young QB’s need to get with the right coach.

Does Mahomes become Mahomes with Andy Reid? I doubt it.

So if KO has his guy, and wants his guy, go get his guy. If its Kirk, its Kirk.

If its not…well go get him.

I agree with you so much of it is situational with the coach that the player gets drafted under and the development time being critical to the physical, technical, mental aspect of that young man reaching his potential.

Have a good round! New courses are fun in the sense you don’t have to worry about how difficult holes are you can just play what you see. You’ll play better than I did two days ago. Worst round I’ve played in 15 yrs. Lost sleep over it.

Reply to  Lifer
18 March 2023 6:37 pm

I agree that in some ways playing a course for the first time you don’t have any preconceived notions about any of the holes. That lends some freedom to your swing. I also will look at the holes layout and distance etc from the tee and if I’m not feeling it, just hit a conservative shot, lay-up, and wedge the ball onto the green. There’s something to be said for just keeping the ball in play.

Lifer

Reply to  No longer New Vikings Fan
18 March 2023 7:02 pm

Absolutely. I wish I could have done that the other day. My swing changes have screwed up my tempo and contact. Thinned and miss hit balls all day to the point I couldn’t finish holes. That is frustrating and I almost walked off the course a couple times but stuck it out and finished even though nothing got better. Not sure what to do now other than just keep going and work through it.

Well for me, I have always played by the rule of 45. I swing the club back on a 45 degree angle. I swing down on a 45 degree angle into the ball and to a point about 2 or 3 inches in front of the ball. I practice this a couple times before I address the ball, then I just try and be relaxed, swing in rhythm and hit the ball to a target. Being relaxed and swinging in rhythm is very important. Since I have swung the club on a simple plane and basically just turn back and turn through, my swing is pretty consistent.

Yeah, it is all mental more than technical with my current issues. With golf if you change some things and then have to think about those changes while doing it so many other inconsistencies are then free to affect the outcome. Relaxing and not rush or tensing or speeding up is my problem. I hit some absolute gorgeous shots just hit way more complete misses. It will turn around.

They way the draft is lining up with our FA moves there’s a 80-90% chance we trade back unless say Carter slides like a stone we’d be at the spot and have the need to take him but that’s unlikely.

Looking at the DL depth…outside of Lynch, yikes. Understandably in Flores 3-4 interior DL isn’t as important as a traditional 4-3 scheme but this is not going to cut in. DT is at a minimum a top 2 need maybe the top need. Mazi Smith possibly but maybe Flores wants a lighter front to rush the passer. Will need one space eater who excels in run defense in that case. Tonga maybe for early downs but not much depth. That said Kancey would be hard to pass on for Flores at 280 lbs and all the Aaron Donald comps. He would bring a lot of juice to the pass rush.

Mick

Kancey is a special one. Would be fun to see that motor on passing downs. I think it’s around that time in the Vikings circle of suck where they draft a 1st round DT.
