Hey, we made it another week! These days can suck if you let them get to you. No football, no baseball, the weather is hideous, winter has been dragging on for what seems like an eternity, and there’s no sign of it ending anytime soon. It seems bleak. Thankfully, we have ice fishing, crock pot recipes, and other important causes to discuss that will help us endure these lonely cold days up on the planet Hoth. They say spring is coming soon, I’ll believe it when I see it.
The Vikings reportedly have interest in re-signing Garret Bradbury. To be honest, I was hoping that the team would seek to upgrade the center position. I know Bradbury took a step forward last year, but he was still the weakest link on the line, in my opinion. Maybe they’re seeing something I’m not, but his pass blocking is still sub-par. Maybe they think they can get him for a reasonable price, and signing him would shore up a position instead of creating another position of need by moving on. While that may be true, I still think they need to upgrade.

My oldest son graduated from the Army Nurses Program yesterday. He was top in his class. It make’s a dad proud. Since he is a sergeant, it took them awhile to decide where to put him. We are very thankful that he will not be going overseas again. He will be stationed in Washington (the state, not DC).
Congrats, that’s really cool!
They live streamed the graduation so we were able to watch. He was the student speaker and per normal I could see a lot of me in him because of just the way he says things and his thought process. It was nice to see him do well. Since we couldn’t be there, my sister and her husband took the trek across Texas to attend. That was nice.

The Vikings won 13 games this year with one of the worst defenses in the league, an anemic running game, and the worst kicker in the league (or close to it). The O-line wasn’t very good either. Hmmm… what DID work? Well, the QB tallied the 4th most passing yards and the 5th most passing TD’s in the league. So the receivers and the QB carried the team. THAT’s what worked.

We had issues with flare-ups on this one, but I replaced the flavor bars & it fixed it.
My old Weber was a friggin’ beast, loved it. I had that thing more than 15 years, not a single issue in that entire time.
Mine has a natural gas line from the house, which is awesome, never had any flare ups, wonder if natural gas vs lpg makes any difference
That’s what I’m going to do whenever I replace my back deck, run the natural gas line to my grill. I’ll just have to buy a conversion kit for the natural gas.

Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, I learned about a candy inmates make in jail called “Crystal Taffy,” and now I want to try it.
You pour some coffee creamer in a mixing bowl, dump in a packet of Kool-Aid, put in a little water and mix for 15 minutes until you have like a ball of clay.
Then you crush Jolly Ranchers and mix into it. Finally, you sprinkle with crushed Jolly Ranchers.
Prison ingenuity is a fascinating thing.
That’s interesting, in the Army we’d make “ranger pudding” with the packets of creamer, cocoa, and sugar in the MRE and mix a little water till pudding consistency. Some people put in the instant coffee from the MRE too but I thought that tasted like garbage.
Yep… ranger pudding was great… MRE’s for 6 to 8 months at a time, not so much.
Since I was never in the military, what was typically in the MRE’s?
There are dozens of MRE meals. They even have veggie and kosher options now.
They normally have a main entree, side/fruit, drink, candy, gum, a heater, and other odd accessories.
Just be aware that they are designed to maintain a solder in combat so it you eat all of the contents you will consume 3,000 calories or so.
Everyone will toss or trade their unused portions. That is normally what is used to experiment with to come up with the odd recipes. After a week or so in the field you will have a sizable collection of odds and ends from MREs.
This guy ‘field strips’ an MRE and does a pretty good job explaining the parts and what they are for.
I went to high school with a kid whose mom worked at the pentagon and designed MREs when they lived in fairfax VA. She started telling us about how and why they include the different stuff but we got bored and stopped listening. I’d probably find it interesting now though.
Back in WWII, they put cigarettes in the rations for the soldiers.

A Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) is a self-contained individual United States military ration used by the United States Armed Forces. It is intended for use by American service members in combat or field conditions where other food is not available. The MRE replaced the canned Meal, Combat, Individual (MCI) in 1981.
Basically it’s the military’s portable field ration.
General contents may include:
Main course (often referred to as “the main”) my favorite was beef stew.
Side dish
Dessert or snack (often commercial candy, fortified pastry, first strike bar, or Soldier Fuel Bar.)
Crackers or bread
Spread of cheese, peanut butter, or jelly
Powdered beverage mix: fruit flavored drink, cocoa, instant coffee or tea, sport drink, or dairy shake.
Utensils (in rare occasions, a full set is included – with a spoon, fork and knife – but most commonly only a plastic spoon is given)
Flameless ration heater (FRH) just add water believe it or not.
Beverage mixing bag
Accessory pack:
Xylitol chewing gum
Water-resistant matchbook
Napkin / toilet paper
Moist towelette
Seasonings, including salt, pepper, sugar, creamer, and/or Tabasco sauce
Freeze dried coffee powder

Also came with candy, skittles, m & m, or charms hard candies.
LOL, the tiny tabasco bottles, at basic training a couple guys thought it funny to prank people by putting a drop of it in guys mouths while they were sleeping.
We saved those as well, and towards the end of basic two guys were having a pissing contest, so we lined up the Tabasco bottles and the first one to quick drinking them lost. The one guy drank ten of them I think.
Oh that would hurt in the morning.
Ham slice and Beef Stew were my go-to.
Had fun building MRE cannons out of those heaters and water bottles. Some good MRE cannon battles ensued.

Just out of curiosity, how does one make an MRE cannon?
Build a 3-foot tube out of water bottles. Make sure the bottom has a solid base. Pour in the FRH (Heater), as the accelerant. Pour in some water and then jam in your projectile. After a minute, the rapidly expanding gas will shoot the projectile out of the tube. Be sure to be aiming down range.
Google “MRE Bomb” for some You Tube videos showing the power of the accelerant.
I’m not sure the new army would allow that. Someone might get hurt.
A bag of high calorie garbage that you mostly had to choke down, though a couple of my personal favorites were spaghetti and any of the stews, pound cake was actually very satisfying. The vegetarian ones were the absolute worst.
Considering the other options for feeding a gang of soldier in the field for long periods it could be worse.
We get a few at the commissary for camping and keeping in the car during the winter.
Really comes down to the main dish, there are certain ones I like, a fair amount that are edible and nothing less, nothing more, then several that I would just toss the main dish and eat all the rest. If I truly needed to I would eat all of them, luckily I never got into that situation.
Once after a week in the field the ‘real food’ we were suppose to get for the ‘last night’ dinner never found us.
We had enough stuff in the ‘odds and ends box’ to feed the whole platoon dinner and a light breakfast the next morning before heading back in.
That sucks. But anytime we got a non MRE meal in the field we were very appreciative and nobody ever bitched about helping out in KP.
Yeah and it was usually steak the last night at Ft Hood.
We were looking forward to it for sure.

I hated the omelet one. We had a guy that loved it so it was an easy trade. The dehydrated fruit cocktail was pretty good.
I loved the ham omelet, would trade my meal for that one & end up scoring extra snacks & such. I was the only person in our platoon that liked that one.
I didn’t mind it so sometimes I could trade and get some good desert or such.
They keep you alive. MREs are far better than the old C rations & such.
The C Rats we got in the early 80s were expired but they still gave them to us.

I like reading about prison culture sometimes. How people find ways to entertain themselves is amazing. And some of the escape stuff is amazing too. The things folks come up with when they have nothing to do but apply themselves to a goal is impressive.
Always liked the one about the British POWs who built a glider to escape. They never got to use it because they got liberated, though. Someone built a replica of the glider and tested it to see if it would have worked. It did.
I often said while working as a (knuckle dragging) prison guard that all the inmates went to MacGyver School given the things that they came up with.
My buddy’s dad was a cop back in the 50s. He pulled over some kids one night, knew they had booze but couldn’t find any. Searched and searched. Finally figured out what they’d done. They routed the window washer hose to the glove box, filled the window washer fluid with whiskey. When they needed a drink, just hold a cup by the hose in the glove box & have the driver hit the window washer button. Genius.

Except my reason for doing it was because I wanted all of the GIs to be flawed characters. I actually wrote out my reasoning for doing everything at one time, but then I lost it, and I have since forgotten most of it. Writing the book is mostly a blank now.
We used to add coffee to the cocoa package, it was good enough to keep you awake for a 12 night shift.
(P.S. if you resort to eating chocolate covered coffee beans stop after an hour or so or you will be up the rest of the next day.)
For some dumb reason a couple of buddies and myself would keep the instant coffee packets from the MRE throughout basic training. The last week of training we were in the field and set up our tents on a gravel parking lot. It rained the entire weekend and the chalky rock became cement on the tents. we had one week to get them clean enough to turn in, and there were only 12 washing machines for 300 guys. The three of us decided, since we had no access to the machines during the day we would stay up all night running our pup tents through the washing machines.
We took the instant coffee packets and would eat them straight when we got tired, along with a couple of no dose pills. I ended up sleeping 1 hour in 7 days that week. I slept the entire 24 hour ride home after graduation.

Overall, the average home price is down 11.5% from the high in May. The Redfin article says that the Bay area took the biggest hit (year to year) followed by Oakland and San Jose. Only 3 other metro areas in the US saw a year over year drop, New York, Seattle, and Boise.

It has slowed but prices haven’t really dropped. Houses under 300-400k still go fairly quick but not same day like they were. More expensive houses are sitting on the market now. They are still ridiculously priced though. For example, there are some 40 acre dry land lots for sale. I doubt you would be able to drill a well and they want 214k. Any house with 20 acres, even a trailer house or double wide is 500-600k minimum. Decent stick built 2500 sf, you’re looking at 700-800k. If there’s a shop or other out buildings, 1 mill.
Yikes, that’s how it’s getting in Bismarck, too. Home prices usually lag behind sales, so if the market is slowing, prices will drop, albeit slowly at first.

So in answer to your question, No I do not think the federal government should have any power concerning what state institutions can and should teach. I WOULD NOT be in favor of a federal law banning CRT in all institutions, I AM NOT in favor of a federal law banning abortion, although I am very strong pro-life.
I absolutely think that citizens of the state of North Dakota should have input into what is taught at the state institutions because we are paying for it and should have oversight over it.
Local k-12 schools should be managed by the citizens of the local school district – i.e. little to no state or federal oversight.

I understand where you’re coming from and I get in theory what you’re saying but I do think the idea of the local K-12 curriculum being controlled by the locals is a fucking horrific idea. Everyone thinks they know education because they went to school. That’s as misguided as saying, “Local hospitals and Doctor’s should be managed by the local citizens.”
All we would have is echo chambers everywhere and that is a scary notion. We should have differing opinions being taught. One of my favorite teacher’s I ever had told us right off the bat that we will never get his actually opinion on anything. He will simply play devil’s advocate to get us to THINK about our own positions. He would challenge us on any stance we took and play Devil’s Advocate and argue the other side just to challenge us. That’s the way it should be, it shouldn’t be, a certain district of small town Midwest thinks we should be teaching the Old Testament as historical and scientific facts so that’s an OK thing to do. Because that should be challenged and thrown out because that’s not science or history. That should be challenged by actual science and scientists and kicked to the curb and taught in places of worship if that’s your belief. Same goes if some hippy libby commune populated some area and wanted science taught that boys can have babies… again, that should be challenged by actual science and scientists.
See, no matter the side of beliefs you fall on actual science, actual history etc… should be what drives our education system. Those areas of expertise funneled through the best practice and understanding and implementation of learning and development. Not just that education should be ran by the beliefs of the locals.

Good O-lines help make good QB’s. Mahomes wasn’t good behind a bad line in Super Bowl LV against the Bucs. The Chiefs lost, 31–9.
If he was less hesitant, his O-line would look better. It works both ways.
Who is hesitant? Cousins? He goes through progressions. If the throw isn’t there he has to move on to the next guy, and the next. No QB hesitates when the throw is there. That makes no sense. He has to hold the ball when the defense takes away the read.
He hesitates far too often. He has the physical skills to make many throws that he fails to pull the trigger on, IMO.

If it was McDonalds the roach was closer to real meat than the “chicken”.
Probably at a popeyes, I’ve been there twice and saw roaches, never eaten the food there due to that reason. Now if we’re talking good chicken fingers, its Raising Canes and Chick fil a and then everything else.
