There isn’t a ton of NFL news out there to talk about. Lots of mock drafts, lots of speculation, and that’s about it. This is pretty much how it will be until teams are officially allowed to speak to upcoming free agents, then the news flood will begin. I’m looking forward to it.
I had a great weekend. I went to see Cocaine Bear on Saturday, I’ll do a full review below, but I can tell you that it was well worth a trip to the theater. Kiddo and I entered an ice fishing tournament yesterday. We didn’t catch a thing, but neither did anyone else, the lake just wasn’t hitting at all & they’re concerned about potential winterkill. Oh well, we had a blast, other than getting stuck. Whoops.
Cocaine Bear
As I mentioned above, I went to the theater to see Cocaine Bear on Saturday. For those of you who, like me, enjoy horror movies, you know that good horror movies come in a few different forms. There’s the good horror movie that actually scares you, there’s the good horror moview that’s so good, it’s bad, and there’s the good horror movie that makes you laugh. This one was the good horror movie that makes you laugh.
There was a little bit of a slow spot at first where they had to build the story, but other than that, this movie was entertaining as hell. Some smugglers drop a shipment of cocaine in the wilderness, and a bear finds it, and it makes her a bit……….edgy. Margo Martindale (she played on Justified & is in a lot of other movies) plays the park ranger, and as always, she knocks it out of the park. This is also Ray Liotta’s last movie, as he plays the cocaine smuggler whose guy lost the shipment of cocaine. There are a couple of gore scenes, but they’re used in a way that it makes you laugh.
Maybe I’m a bit off, but I REALLY loved this movie. I’d highly recommend going if you want a good chuckle, because I laughed my a** off at this movie, it was AWESOME!

An NFL team has proposed making roughing the passer a reviewable call, per NFL.com. The proposal is not expected to pass, even if it makes it to a vote, which it likely won’t. Also at NFL.com, Joe Lombardi will be the next Broncos offensive coordinator, reuniting the coach with Sean Payton.
CBS Sports takes a look at all NFL teams’ search for a franchise QB. You’ll see a familiar favorite near the top of the list. They say that the Vikings are in the midst of a 44-year drought, with Tark being the team’s last true franchise QB. Don’t shoot the messenger, I’m just reporting what they said.

Tomlinson is the top free agent in this class, a reliable player who’s disruptive on the interior of the defensive line. He’s been a valuable defensive tackle since entering the league. Bradbury is worth retaining on an offensive line that needs him, especially since he’ll have a market. Peterson is 33, but coming off a year which he was strong in coverage and notched five interceptions.
This class isn’t great outside of the three mentioned, but the Vikings would be wise to keep Bradbury around.

Tark is overrated in terms of vikings QB’s. He may be in the HOF, but that’s due to the absolutely watered down talent of QB back in that day, no other choices makes it easier to make it.
The discussion has strayed from the original point of Tark being the Vikings “last true franchise QB”, of which I don’t nor did I disagree. Though he is overrated. Both can be true. Tark did play a stupid number of meh years for the team, so there’s that.
In terms of best QB’s to play for the Vikings he couldn’t even carry the jock of Favre, Cunningham, Kurt, and there’s an argument for fricken Pep.
I hold true to my statement; Tark being the last true franchise qb for the team? He’s overrated which makes it even more sad. We can discuss the qualifications that makes one a franchise QB. My stance on franchise QB is a young QB with the skills to build around and succeed long term, which I would then say we could look at Culpepper. Drafted to be the cornerstone QB for the team. With hindsight doing the talking (which we are in the original post I assume) then it would have to be Tark based on years of service given Pep’s ultimate injury problems.
Well, you could also say that the rules of the NFL at the time weren’t skewed to make the QB look better like it is now. Different era, different rules. Doesn’t mean the QBs were less good, just that they weren’t treated like fucking china dolls.
Hmmm…..might agree with you, might not. Was Pep enough and did he play long enough? He was drafted with the expectation that he would be our franchise QB…

Wow… that’s a chunk of money. Whoever wrote that contract did the Redskins a favor. Cut him and save over $26M. Nice. Onto QB #13 since Cousins left.
They wrote all the guarantees & heavy cap hits to the front of the contract (front loaded). Allows a team to make a move in the later years, there was zero dead cap hit on his contract when they cut him. His roster bonus was set to hit on 3/17, so they had to cut him prior to that.
Also, looking at his contract, he probably got benched last year because they wanted to avoid him playing 70% of the team’s snaps. If he’d have played 70% of the snaps, they’d have to give the Cults a 2nd round pick instead of a 3rd.

I don’t disagree, I just think we can do better than Zach Wilson as a replacement for Cousins. I’m all for moving on, but only if we’re going to improve the team. Making changes only for the sake of change usually results in more downside than upside, IMO.
Here’s a dose of reality when a team parts ways with Cousins:
From 2018 onward, the Redskins (Commanders) have relied on a true smorgasbord of quarterbacks to take snaps. Below, you’ll see a list of the year, the QBs who got starts, and then the amount of starts they’ve had in brackets following their name. Take a peek:
Don’t forget that the above listed totals are only starts. In 2020, Taylor Heinicke got some playing time at QB. Kyle Allen got in for a pair of games in 2021.
Going into 2023, the Vikings will continue leaning on Kirk Cousins to be his usual steady self. Meanwhile, Washington will again be heading into another season where the quarterback spot is in flux. One has to wonder if they’d welcome an ultra durable veteran to provide solid play on a week-in, week-out basis.

Yeah, I hear ya’. I’m afraid they’re going to hope that the defense’s trouble were all coaching last year, and try to “run it back” with the same personnel. This would be a mistake, but it wouldn’t shock me if it happened.
I’m not sure that has been my mantra.
I just think Kirk is too average to do anything other than competing for a playoff spot and falling short when it matters. I don’t think it matters what happens with the OL or the defense. Kirk is who he is. Slightly better than average.
But if you are claiming having money available for other players is not an issue, just sign kirk for $50 million guaranteed. See how that works out.

Hard to get an F in a draft. I think 2016 is the last true F I can remember. Mackensie Alexander was the best player out of that draft for the Vikings. Some standouts of that draft are Treadwell, Willie Beavers, and Moritz Boehringer. What a mess.

Good point. They did get Ingram, who started all year. Evans looked good when not concussed, Asamoah showed promise. I can go D on last year’s draft. Compare it to 2016, you can’t give those two drafts the same grade, because the Vikes 2016 draft was a horrendous shit-show.
Only saved by Ingram, Evans, and Asamoah. Nailor has strong potential, IMO.
Ingram was the worst guard in the NFL, not sure how Evans saved anything considering he missed half the year with 3 concussions and is probably a bad hit in the head from a potentially career ending injury. Assmoah barely played but very likely wouldn’t have been any worse that Kendricks or Hicks, which is saying at a minimum he’s a bad starting LB with the potential for more. Its looking like a terrible draft, but like always it takes a couple years to truly evaluate.

The only thing that concerns me about Ramsey is his contract. If we can shed one or two of our current bad veteran contracts, then I think they could make it work.

I am stoopid, that is fact. My idea for what? I don’t think Smith has much trade value considering he’s 30+ years old coming off a season where he disappeared for half a season after an injury and missed the entire season before due to injury. I could be wrong though. I don’t think the Vikings are in position to trade for a player of Ramsey’s caliber, both in terms of draft capital and salary cap space.

The #1 overall QB by most rankings is a running QB guy who weighs about 185 lbs, hard pass. The next guy is a Josh Allen type with all the elite physical tools but concerns over turnovers and inconsistencies. The other 1st round guy is another in a loooooong line of Ohio QBs who produce in a specific system in college but don’t likely translate to the NFL. Only one I have even marginal interest in moving up for is Levis and I’m only lukewarm at that.
Kirk has never done a long term deal, zero chance that happens. A short term deal if anything.
