Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts
Wow, that was an ugly game to watch. The Vikings came out looking uninspired, then there was a pick 6 that was comically overturned, and then the Vikings looked even more uninspired. The defense laid down and allowed the Chargers to run all over them. The offense spit and sputtered, didn’t block, and the offensive scheme was horribly misguided. It was like KOC was unaware that the O line is a seive. They didn’t even try to establish the running game, instead they decided to trust their backup QB, who was operating at about 50% health, to stand in the pocket and get clobbered while he held the ball too long at times. It was ugly all around, I don’t have a lot more to say about it. What a crap fest.
I do like Russell Wilson more than I did prior to seeing this tweet. Here’s a link to the entire story from ESPN.

New thread for game day. Sorry ’bout yesterday, we were in Glendive for a football game, then went to Williston to look at some baseball cards (and I did a couple inspections there).
We have to finish our last 10 games at least 8-2 to have a chance of making the playoffs IMO.
Think we can do it? Or should we tank for Arch Manning? Grin.
Archie is injured.
10-2 not impossible but unlikely, even highly unlikely.
But no reason not to try, although they ‘try’ to win every game even if it didn’t look like it on Thursday.
After a goofy first half last night where they gave up a safety, and fell behind 18-14 to LSU, the Aggies scored 35 in the second half to win 49-25. A&M remains undefeated, and LSU lost to Vanderbilt as well as us.
Isn’t today Saturday? Am I in a timeshift?
Believe it’s Sunday?
Good morning
Good morning to you. Still stinging from the Chargers game. Just too much crap to get over quickly.
Maybe can watch some good football today and enjoy that.
Same… hope the Ravens beat the Bears today, but I have my doubts.
Why you don’t hate the NFL enough.
So now the NFL is pushing the narrative that Reichards missed FG in London didn’t hit the camera wire, that was an optical illusion. This is despite previously stating that the officials ‘missed the call’ during the game.

Goofy
Is it Goofy or Pluto?
I can never tell the difference.
Pluto’s got the big feet.
Google says,
‘In Disney cartoons, Goofy is a person, not a dog. He is just drawn to resemble a dog, just as Mickey Mouse is a person drawn as a mouse and Donald Duck is a person drawn as a duck. Pluto, however, is a dog drawn as a dog.’
Mamdani choked up when he told the story of how “My aunt stopped taking the subway after 9/11 because she did not feel safe in her hijab.”
Not because 2,976 people stopped taking the subway after 9/11 because they were murdered.
And this moron is going to be the next mayor of NYC??
This the same victim card the Muslims play in every Western Country they come to. They are the most oppressed people in the world. They are the ones who are the persecuted. They suffer Islamophobia everywhere.
Oh yeah, they rape and murder non-believers by the thousands.

I am curious how this Indiana-UCLA game is going to go.
Not 100% convinced Indiana is legit yet.
UCLA is undefeated since it scored that epic upset of top 5 rated Penn St after a horrific start to the season.
Could be an interesting game.
Well Indiana starting off with a Pick 6 of UCLA can help convince me that they are legit.
Or that UCLA is not.
35-3 at the half.
I guess Indiana is pretty legit.

After the Charger game, I’m not sure if we need more help upfront or on the backend – we couldn’t stop the run or the pass.
With all of the discussions about keeping Wentz in the game Thursday here are KOCs justifications. I think that they are ‘part’ of the truth, just not all of it.
https://www.foxnews.com/sports/vikings-coach-kevin-oconnell-explains-decision-keep-carson-wentz-game-prolonged-period-despite-appa
Wentz is a competitor, and a tough guy. He wants to play, and these guys all live in denial. They always think they can still get it done. Like the Knight in the Holy Grail. “It’s just a flesh wound”. Still, there’s a point where it’s clear they are too diminished to be effective. I think we saw this clearly on the 30 yard throw to Jefferson that was picked, Wentz had his left arm folded across his chest. The ball sailed on him and that was that. He just couldn’t throw the ball anymore.
Of course. How many times do you see a Manager in baseball go to the mound in. the sixth and say I thin k you’re getting tired. And the pitcher will say no Skip I’m just fine. Athletes are competitors and don’t want to come out.
But that’s why coaches get paid big bucks to make decisions like this.
KOC’s take…
I actually think that’s pretty damning. Given all that, and we beaten why not just have Wentz go out and handoff. Get the game over as quickly as possible without further hurting anyone.
Good point.

Just saw this… I’m doubtful it’s anything more than clickbait.
Moar Kork!
I doubt that Cousins plays. Tiger Woods played, and won, a U.S. Open on a broken leg.
And Adam Thielen finished a game with a broken bone in his back.
He did state that it wasn’t an important bone.
Love this story… “not an important bone”. People just don’t get how tough these guys are.
Well, not surprised…
I assume everyone else on the 53 was considered more valuable.
Are not the Jets #1 on the waiver wire with their perfect 0-7 record??
Yes
From what I saw last night, the “valuability” of the other 53 is questionable.
A logical question in the light of such strong evidence as was observed on TNF.
Honestly, still bothered by that game last night.
Guess it’s Friday night and a couple of beers will soften the ache.
I think we’re all still bugged by the game. Such a complete and abject failure.
Since I have adopted ‘Hope for the best but expect the worst’ I find that I recover quicker.
It still hurts, no doubt but for not quite as long.
Just saw this JJ (WR) ad on TV.
He does seem to be in a bunch of them lately.
Since he hardly makes any money plying football, needs side work.
He has to ‘make hay while the sun shines’ I guess.
Hay? He’s going to get a hernia carrying all those gold bars to the bank.
I also noticed he’s in a lot of commercials. Maybe he’s planning to hold out until he gets traded… Maybe I should figure out the sarc fount…

Hope all is going well for you and family.
I didn’t make the ‘Summary’.
Now I have ‘A Sad’.
I will have to step up my game obviously.
Because you’re wise and don’t say stupid things like the rest of us.
I am wise??
Oh I get it, that is an example of the stupid things that people might say to get included in the Summary.
Yay! Summaries are back.
I’m cheating on my diet, I’m drinking a tall glass of spicy hot V8, I’m not supposed to because of high sodium content, but I’m a rebel and I deserve it after watching that shitshow last night, let’s recap:
oline couldn’t open holes in the run game, couldn’t pass block either, missing both tackles had a significant impact – ass
QB sucks and is injured, should have been pulled sooner – ass
Defense sucks everywhere, only Guy who really shows up every play is Greenard, dline sucks otherwise, lbs got pushed around in the run game, CBs can’t cover, especially Jeff, safeties were invisible, especially Smith, he needs to move into Shady Pines with Sophia from Golden girls – complete ass
ST weren’t good but look almost competent compared to o and d – ass adjacent
coaching seems to be unable or unwilling to do things differently, they’re kind of stuck with the personnel they have, so I’m not sure what they can do but something has to change – mud butt ass
unless darrisaw, O’Neill, VG, McCarthy, all get fully healthy by next Sunday I don’t see things going well against Detroit
season isn’t over but it’s headed that direction quickly, I’m curious to see if they come out with some fire in their asses next game, or if they wilt like a bunch of pansies
I think it will be closer than last nights game, because it’s a divisional opponent. Teams often look ahead and past their current opponent to the divisional game.
I highly doubt the Vikings win, given the QB situation though.
And the offensive line situation.
And the defensive line situation.
And the LB situation.
And the defensive secondary situation.
And then theirs coaching too.
They do have Low Sodium Spicy V-8.

You can buy it on-line.
Although that probably will be pricier.
Agreed. On all accounts.
Glad to have you back around – been thru some stuff w/my dad – he’s okay, but it’s a reminder of his mortality, mine too. Reminding myself of how you lost yours and the tribute you wrote. Fathers & sons and all that stuff. Good men have gone before me, and survived.
Enjoy that V8. I’ll be enjoying some ‘greens’ myself after work.

I didn’t catch any fish, I’m gonna go try to scare up a pheasant or 2.
Good thing your handle isn’t Gone Catchin..
In my humble opinion, I think Wentz does not care about the team. I think this has been an issue everywhere he has played, and once the team sees it, he loses them.
I feel like the defense isn’t going the extra mile to get the ball back for the offense.
I think it was Manly Purple last night that kept commenting on how Wentz was chumming it up with McCown on the sidelines, even though he was getting his butt kicked on the field. To me it doesn’t seem like he cares if he wins or loses. I was hoping that would change playing for the team he grew up cheering for, but it doesn’t seem to be the case.
Yea I didn’t like that at all either – a terrible look.
But in the second half, no more smiles and saw him sitting there with his face in pain and the coach keep putting him right back in.
This QB situation on this team is a coaching issue – and it it’s like most all businesses you can bet the front office is involved, ie GM.
I think you are reading too much into this. Wentz wouldn’t be out there unless he cared. Trying to remain upbeat while getting killed every play is hard. Keeping your spirits up is a mental challenge. Humor helps with this. You have to admit, the way the O-line was playing was laughable. There was nothing else to do but laugh, really. No matter what is going on, you have to go into every play with a positive outlook. QB’s who are downbeat, take the team down. Men don’t cry, they go out and try. As the leader he has to go into the huddle and influence the other men. If he’s acting dejected, that is the worst way to handle things.
I remember I hearing an analogy about this type of situation that I try to apply in like situations.
‘If a surgeon comes out of an operation room where they lost a patient and sees someone they care for/about and smile at them it does not mean that they don’t care about the patient that they lost.’
This is true…
Completely different situation though.
If I was in Wentz’s position, I’d be ticked at myself and the team and wouldn’t be smiling with McCown.
Was McCown trying to stay positive and encourage him? I dunno. But I still wouldn’t smiling.
We need some that gamer attitude we saw at the end of the Chicago game from JJM.
I would be chewing ass on the Oline for letting me get killed.
They knew they were getting him killed. They were like right there looking at it up close and personal. If that doesn’t change the status quo, yelling at them isn’t going to do anything.
I don’t know, both in they Army and in Prison we joked often and even at the worst of times to break thru the ‘doom’ and depression of the moment’.
I remember being punished as a platoon in basic training and we were left standing at attention in formation. It started to rain, hard, I said out loud ‘It could be worse it could be raining’.
The platoon all started to laugh, the Drill Sgt got upset and we ended up doing pushups in the rain. But the joke still make things better.
For sure, about half the time I was in the Army we found humor in just about anything, If not you’d be depressed all the time.
And in the prison it is just a depressing place that even bad jokes like mine were appreciated.
I don’t believe those situations you mentioned and the smiles that were on Wentz’s face are describing the same motivation.
Wentz’s didn’t seem like smiling to get through tough times but more like smiling because I’m not that dialed in.
Well since we don’t know what was said it is difficult to assign possible motives and reasons as why that they were laughing or smiling.
Just like coming out of an operating room and smiling. It does not mean that the surgery went well, there are other possible reasons.
Went to lunch and shopping with with the wife. Trying to just relax now. The team is in a tough way this year. The defense got owned last night completely, and the offense got shut down completely. We ran the ball 9 times for 18 yards before the last possession. Got 2 carries for 16 yards in the last few plays.
When your running game is that weak, and you can’t protect the QB, then you’re in trouble.
Just too much bad right now.
Question for you guys that know the rules about the three QB stuff.
In short, why couldn’t JJ have been the backup last night?
He could have been.
But the narrative that he is still too injured to play does not support making him the backup.
You don’t have to be 100% as the backup.
Every time Wentz was sacked, he was holding the ball in his right hand and fell on his left shoulder – you could see the pain in his face.
The 4th quarter would have been great game practice time for JJ.
Or even Brosmer. Should have been playing way sooner. Maybe he’s Purdy or something. but KOC too stupid and stubborn to try him out.
No one says that he ‘can not’ be named backup if he not 100%.
The logic/narrative says Brosmer over JJ (QB) due to healthy-ness.
Just appears we are using a different “healthy-ness” standard for different players (QBs).
One QB is hopefully our QB for the next ten years. The other QB is our QB hopefully until next Sunday. A big difference in how you are going to use them. If we were expecting Wentz to be our QB for the next 2-3 years he probably wouldn’t be out there last night.
This is a health issue. KOC said during the week he didn’t want to play if he wasn’t completely healthy and could move around (to protect himself)
So you just throw Wentz to the wolves,
Moreover, his injuries were seriously affecting his throwing the ball.
Could you pitch with bad ribs and a severely injured left shoulder? That left side is part of the throwing motion.
Hell no.
And here’s a tip for all throwing experts here.
Notice that interception in the fourth. You know the one that was such a terrible throw.
Look at his arm position when he releases the ball – it’s to the side. Not his normal motion. When you can’t get your arm “over” the ball, it will always sail high.
Agree. Throwing a football is a full body motion. The left side is important. I knew that Wentz had a painful left shoulder injury. Last night I think we all saw just how bad that injury was, and yes, how it affected his throwing motion.
Like I said Wentz is a weekly rental, not the long term solution. Is it shitty to keep running him out there, yes. Is it in the best interest of the future of the team to run him out there until JJ is 100% healthy, yes.
I drive a rental car a lot different than I drive my personal vehicle.
I don’t. And people aren’t machines or pieces of furniture.
Trust me, I want to see JJ out there more than anyone, but if it is risking his future health, I say keep him on the bench. Wentz is a 1 year rental that is here to play until JJ is ready.
JV, you are coming across like you don’t care about Wentz as a player or a human.
Look at what I posted, I said it was shitty to keep sending Wentz out there. But that is the life of a backup in the NFL. That is why most of the backups complain, not out loud to the public, when they find out they have to play.
You compared him to driving a rental car…
Oh man, that’s great – tell that to all the backups. Youall are just like a piece of the furniture.
And if we are only going to see JJ when he is 100%, what’s that – 2 or 3 weeks a year?
You know how it is… those 22-year-olds take forever to heal. Might be out another 3-4 weeks just to be safe.
Something about this smells a little “fishy” to me.
Easy solution. Send Brosmer in for one play, tell him to pretend to get hurt, and put McCarthy in.
they should hire me
I might have time to help after I’m done hunting
Couldn’t do any worse at tis point.
Pheasant stew for dinner…
Against my better judgement, I turned on the game last night for about 5 minutes while I was doing dishes. I saw the BS overturned pick-6 and immediately shut it back off. Some might say the ball moved when he hit the ground, but from the front view, it’s because it is in his right hand and when he hits the ground, his wrist and hand rotate, making it look like the ball rotates, but it’s in his grasp the entire time including when he gets up. Ruled interception on field, certainly not enough evidence to overturn. But the NFL has always hated the Vikings for some reason (perhaps even more this game because they are mad about the shitty calls they made last week and deservedly catching hell for it, or they didn’t get the JJ vs Harbaugh matchup they wanted).
Like I said after the Eagles game: Unwatchable rigged garbage. I’m not going to watch anymore this year or keep hoping the Vikings will either play well enough to do well OR be allowed to do well by the NFL. It is a lost cause, and anyone hoping otherwise is foolish and wasting their time IMO. I may never watch a game again unless they make it to the Super Bowl. I still like coming here for the non-football discussions, so I probably will continue. But man, when the Vikings are putting a horrible product on the field (Flores and KOC are extremely overrated btw) and the NFL is rigging games against them, it’s hard to care anymore. Like I said, the NFL will make sure the Packers do well this year (they get a lot of help every year) and I expect NFCC game for them, at least. End of rant.
Rec for truth-i-ness.
I did find some humor from one play. On one play when we were near the goal line, The Chargers fielded their defense with just TEN players. Of course we still couldn’t score but the refs called a penalty on the Chargers and we got another chance.
Lol. Shouldn’t be a penalty for having too few men on the field. Disadvantage by itself.
I feel exactly how you feel. Thank you for putting into words.
You’re welcome!
Just got a call from my brother’s wife. He had a series of seizures last night, fell out of bed, cracked his collar bone, and hurt his right arm. They helicoptered him to the hospital in Mobile, Al. He’s fully sedated, and is resting. Praying for him and hoping there is some treatment. He has had very small seizures, barely noticeable for 12 years. He’s been tested many times, but nothing has ever been “discovered” in his brain. Last night he was in full seizure though and they “captured” the events on their equipment. We’ll see where it goes from here. No one else in the family has experienced anything like this. We’re all praying for him of course.
Sorry to hear about your brother. Hope he makes a full recovery.
Seizures can be difficult. Worked with a guy who out of no where had one getting on an airplane, Got a lot of tests with negative results. Two weeks later had one and again nothing. After the second he had to give up his drivers license. Strangely, he never had another the rest of his life.
Thank you JR. Yes my brother stopped driving after his second episode which were like having your computer reboot he said. He would blank out for a few seconds then come to. Scared him enough that he couldn’t risk driving. At first they were very intermittent. Months apart. Over the years they have become more frequent, but they have not increased in severity. Just a seconds of blanking out, then recovering. I didn’t know about this until my last visit when we evacuated to his house for the hurricane last year. We were sitting at the dinner table, eating and talking. He was answering a question, then he went blank. I had no idea what was going on. His wife was in the kitchen and I alerted her. She came out as she did, he came out of the trance like state he was in. He had no memory of what we were talking about, and had no awareness why he was blanked out.
Last night though, he apparently had a series of very intensive full body seizures. Scary for his wife of course.
Hopefully they can determine cause and successfully treat it.
Condolences.
Hopefully they can find the cause now and then a treatment.
Thanks SoCal. We all have difficulties to deal with of course. I’m worried for my brother. Only hope there is some medication that can help.
🙏
Thank you VP.
Praying for your brother.
Thank you SKOL… means a lot.
Sorry to hear about your brother. Prayers indeed. Blessings on the path forward.
Thank you very much for your kind words and consideration. He is a devout Christian and a significant member of his church. We know God’s will be done. We just hope in this case, his will is that my brother recovers.
Amen
I did think we had a good offseason. I thought adding Hargrave and Allen to the D-line was a huge improvement. I thought adding Fries and Kelly to the O-line was also a big improvement. I expected a lot more from the team than where we’re at right now. Things have gone sideways pretty quickly.
At this point I’d rather have Ingram and Bradbury.
Whole defense is a mess – period>
besides Allen’s “sack” last night, he has been NON EXISTENT this entire season.
our Dline has really struggledf
I’m going fishing today, hopefully it will lighten my mood.
Enjoy GF. Hopefully you’ll catch a few.
I hope so. The fall walleye bite hasn’t started yet, but I hear the northern are biting down south. I’m gonna go find out for myself.
Waiting for fishing buddy to reply, but no answer yet. He’s a Viking fan and he drinks, so I’m guessing he’s not feeling too well this morning.
It was clear last night that the offseason was a complete failure.
Fix the o-line: hahaha nope!
Fix the interior d-line: do we even have DTs???
Secondary is a disaster except Rodgers, who seems to be the only offseason signing that has worked out in any capacity.
I hate to say this as I have been a huge KOC fan, but right now we have a major coaching failure.
Think what KOC said earlier in the week. He didn’t want JJ to play unless 100 % to fully protect himself. So he puts Wentz out there in that condition and leaves him in when he clearly couldn’t throw.
At this point it’s not which QB can go out and play the best. It’s which QB is healthy enough to not get killed as quickly, and how long will it be before that one is hurt, and then on to the next.
Both QB’s have been injured playing behind this line.
Agreed. KOC is not coaching near “coach of the year” level. His scheming and game planning are awful this year and costing the team.
Yeah, that was bordering on @$$hat-level of thinking. Abusive, really.
Tough game to watch last night on pretty much every level. Offense struggled and the defense struggled. I thought this was going to be a much closer contest. We got slapped around pretty good.
Don’t forget the special teams….
i wonder if we have the most special teams penalties….it’s gotta be up there
It was definitely a complete shit show.
I always get nervous when Price tries to go to the outside on special teams runs. It almost always results in a holding call.
Week eight, and they still don’t know the rules.
I don’t either. All I can think is that the rules are dumb.
Watched the INT replay again with much less blurry eyes.
Ball moved. It was the correct, momentum-killing call.
Yeah, I try to make sense of it like this in my brain. If the ground is dislodging the ball, it is a dead ball at that point and control is irrelevant.
Then it should have been incomplete for Kelce too.
The inconsistency from “New York” is what shows their slant.
Yep.
Nobody knows what a catch is anymore. Refs are making it up as they go, just as the script for any given game requires.
What a crap game. The team looks like they’re in a free fall.
Can’t put it all on Wentz, he played through injury, KOC screwed him & the offense with his play calling “scheme”, and the defense was stinky ass. Hell, even the special teams sucked. The Vikings, who were disciplined under KOC prior to this year, play like they don’t know the rules of the game and/or don’t give a shit.
Crap game – you’re being kind.
Completely out coached both sides of the ball, by a considerable margin and. not even close.
And Koc, you’re not going to win any humanitarian awards playing with a wounded QB, clearly hurting on every play, and you keep him fling it. Total crap.
And Flores. I’ve watched football for a long time, but I have never seen a defense where there are zero defenders from seven yards from the LOC to the endzone and from left hash to the right hash. You could match the 8th and I Marching Marine Corp Band thru the middle of our defense. All night long.
If we played the Dolphins tomorrow, I’m not sure who I’d bet on.
Can’t argue with any of that
I think I know what happened. It is a David/Bathesheba situation. KOC fell in love with Wentz’s wife, and tried to murder Wentz by leaving him in the game.
great biblical reference!!!!
“in the days when coaches go out to coach, KOC remained at his TCO office, and it happened late one afternoon, when KOC arose from his desk and was walking along the corridors of TCO, he saw a woman in a hottub and the woman was very beautiful, and KOC sent and inquired who this woman was, and one of his coordinators said “is this not Mrs Wentz, wife of your starting QB?”, so KOC sent his coordinators to her and she came to him and he lay with her….”
No lies detected.
Lol
Hangover is bad this morning after that game last night.
I’m glad I don’t drink, otherwise today would not be a good day.
Yeah. But drinking didn’t cause my hangover. The Vikings did.
Ah, I see. Those hangovers are even worse.
I have no idea why I watched the whole thing. There’s no reason for that.
I never would have normally, but I’m in the cities visiting. I took one for the team last night.
Well I do and I did and it didn’t help a bit.
Meh, I didn’t expect much different. Thought the defense would do better, but I think they saw the writing on the wall pretty early between the refs and and the qb. Next week will be better. Might not be a victory, but it seems like when there’s a game like that and the attitude here gets where it is, they come out and win by 20.
I didn’t expect a beatdown like that.
I figured the Vikings would lose.
I don’t think I would have called that ahead of time, but I just found myself not upset and not surprised as the game went on. It needed to happen so that if JJ bobbles a little there is less calls for Wentz to get back out there. They should just put him on IR.
Wentz gets killed out there last night, and all you care about is McCarthy not being threatened when he plays? That is a very fucked up position.
What are you talking about? I think Wentz needs to sit and heal. Put him on IR for 4 weeks so if the line gets JJ killed they aren’t putting Wentz back out there again at half health. Injury or no injury, Wentz has not looked good. That late interception yesterday was horrible.
I’m talking about all you care about is McCarthy. That’s fucked up.
You’re an idiot.
That’s thoughtful.
With the current level of energy that the team is bringing, combined with the play calling, we won’t get another win unless those things change considerably
Amen
Good morning, SKOL!

FTP Auto Rec.
It may be time to burn it all down. Have a Pohlad type fire sale at the trade deadline, fire KOC and KAM. And start over next year. It can’t be any worse then the first 2 drives I watched last night. Didn’t watch anymore, as it was so terrible.
unfortunately we just extended KOC and KAM……
Doesn’t mean they can’t be let go. We let Zim go the year after his extension. You just have to pay them their contract, unless they get hired on elsewhere.
And they definitely have enough profit margin to absorb that expense. They wouldn’t even notice.
Luckily they don’t can’ count against the cap
I am okay with that. It is radical and extreme, but it is not that crazy. Why limp along with the duo for three mid years. Just move on. Fire Kwesi and KOC. Let Flores play coach for the rest of the year so he can get that out of his system. Fans get to see something different. Everyone wins. Except Kwesi and KOC, but they can go on SNAP.
Oh…
No. It they look like that the rest of the year and it’s clear JJ doesn’t belong on the nfl, then do what you want at the end of the season. All will be better next weekend. JJ will cure all.

At least Wentz was able to smile the whole night on the sideline while getting his backside whooped on the field. 🙄 Glad he and McCown were having fun.
Flores, great scheme. Keep it up, buddy.
KOC, thanks for making the Vikings decision to hire you instead of Harbaugh look good last night. Nice work. You had the guys really ready to play.
They all gave up after the pick-6 was overturned. No fight in them. Also, reffing calls matter. (I’m sure the league was none too happy it was a blowout.)
But hey, at least our front office and coaches have great collaboration.
Also, the NFL is the worst. Never giving them my money again.
Don’t you dare speak bad of the NFL.
Flores seems to have lost his touch, these last 2 weeks.
