Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts
Vikings @ Lions
Now THAT was a fun game to watch! The Minnesota Vikings went to Detroit to play a division rival, and one of the NFL’s better teams, and left with the win. Any road win is a good win. A road win against that team is a great win that not many folks expected to happen.
J.J. McCarthy and the Vikings Offense
Man, J.J. McCarthy played a heck of a game yesterday. In his first game back since being sidelined with an ankle injury, the kid was decisive, accurate, smart with the football, and that back shoulder throw to Nailor to seal the game was as clutch as it gets. There were several key drops by the WRs/TEs, but he battled and kept making plays. He wasn’t perfect, but I assume Vikings fans are quite happy with what they saw from him. His only interception was a pass that was slightly behind Nailor, and was arguably not an interception, and that was his only major error on the day. He didn’t light up the stat sheet, but that isn’t what wins football games. The kid was poised in the pocket, threw for two touchdowns, and ran for another.
Kevin O’Connell’s play calling was much more balanced yesterday. The Vikings actually had more rushing plays than passing plays, which is quite rare for KOC. I was frustrated with him for throwing the ball twice on that goal line drive in the final few minutes, as running the ball would’ve eaten an additional 1:30 off the clock. However, I’ll give him kudos for the game he called. He designed some beautiful misdirection and screen plays that went for huge gains and worked wonders to back off the Lions’ blitz.
Defense
Brian Flores should get a game ball for yesterday’s defensive strategy. They absolutely suffocated the Lions rushing attack, and they had Goff and the Lions passing offense confused and off-balance. They pressured Goff from start to finish, and they sacked him five times on the day. It was REALLY nice to have Van Ginkel and Cashman back on the field. That defense looks much better with those two both out there. Cashman was the guy who forced the Montgomery fumble, which was massive. My favorite off-season signing is Erikl Wilson.
Other Notes
- Great field goal block
- How does Isiah Rodgers let the kicker catch him?
- Erik Wilson is a stud
- The refs suck
- The Packers got beat at home……again. Big smile.

An update on Aaron Jones shoulder injury, from The Sporting News.
It sounds like Packers TE Tucker Kraft is out for the year with an ACL injury, from CBS Sports. This sucks. I hate the Packers, but I don’t like seeing guys get inured, and Kraft seems like a really good dude. I hope he makes a full & speedy recovery. Maybe we can trade Hockenson for him this off-season.

Jaguars kicker Cam Little set an NFL record with a 68 yard field goal, per NFL.com. This one actually counts. This is the same dude who banged a 70 yarder in the preseason, but that one didn’t count for the record books, this one does.
