Merry Monday , everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion! Every day you can join us for the latest Minnesota Vikings news, lots of Minnesota Vikings talk, also NFL news and updates, and most anything else you may have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!

Before we get started, I just want to say a huge thank you to all of you. The activity here is what keeps the site going and makes it worth maintaining, and we reached a huge milestone. I’m not sure when this happened, but I did a search last night for “Minnesota Vikings blogs” on Bing (don’t hold it against me, Firefox isn’t behaving on my new computer), and Skoloholics was about 3/4 of the way down the FIRST PAGE. When we first started, it took a long time to even get recognized, and showing up on page one was a pipe dream. Again, a billion thanks to ALL OF YOU for making the site what it is, we’ll do all we can to keep improving and getting bigger and better. SKOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Random Thoughts

Wow, what a weekend! Kiddo and I had our first camping outing of the year, and although it was a bit cold for camping, we had a great time. I caught a nice catfish on Friday, then I caught a fishing pole. I’ve fished for nearly all of the 51 years I’ve been on earth, and this was the first time I’ve ever caught a complete rod & reel setup. It was nice, too; I cleaned it up yesterday after we got home from fishing. I just have to take the reel apart, re-oil it, then add new line, and it’ll be ready to be put back to use.

Vikings Discussion & Sports Talk

I love seeing the sports media and the national media get things totally wrong, especially when they’re latching onto (90% of their contact, to be honest). ESPN was ga-ga over the Lakers, with Shannon Sharpe predicting over and over that the Lakers were going to win in 5. Then the Wolves won in 5. I love it. The media also predicted ad-nauseum leading up to the draft that Aaron Rodgers was going to the Vikings. It’s apparent to everyone (except Dianna Russini) that it isn’t happening. By the way, Aaron Rodgers is still a free agent, just in case you care, which you probably don’t.

Also, I see that Sam Howell will be wearing number 8. I have no further comment……..

Also, soccer is still dumb. I saw some headline mentioning some team called “Later Miami”. WTH is that supposed to even mean? What a weird game that is (I’m not going to refer to it as a sport).

Vikings News

The Vikings have handed out jersey numbers to new players, returning players, and all other types of players, per Vikings.com.

From Vikings.com, CJ Ham is hosting the 2025 UNRL celebrity softball game for Great Causes.

Also at Vikings.com, Justin Jefferson is hosting a football camp for kids at TCO Performance Center. The training camp is May 24 from 4-7 pm, and I’ll be reporting directly from the camp, I registered my son for it. Why not? Sieze the opportunity.

Athlon Sports is linking the Vikings to free agent CB Rasul Douglas.

MSN thinks that Sam Howell wearing number 8 means that Cousins isn’t coming to Minnesota. I think we all knew that Cousins isn’t coming to Minnesota, and it had nothing to do with Sam Howell getting his number. Kirk Cousins wants to start. The Vikings already have their starter. Therefore, Kirk Cousins will not be coming to Minnesota unless something happens to J.J. McCarthy. If something happens to McCarthy, and the Vikings have a choice between Rodgers and Cousins, there’s no guarantee that they would choose Cousins. Anyway, more media gibberish, followed by gibberish by me, so there you go.

NFL News

Adam Thielen said that 2025 could be his last season, per NFL.com. I’m a big fan of Thielen, dude defied a lot of odds to just make it to the NFL, then he became one of the best WRs in the league for quite a few years. All the best to him, I hope he retires a Viking.

Yahoo Sports thinks it’s news that the Cowboys have moved around their lockers. Gee, I’ll sleep better tonight now that I know that.

Media Selection

I’ll bet I watched this 20 times this weekend, makes me crack up every time. Man, my hat’s off to the folks in law enforcement who have to deal with these psychos.

I thought I would check in on the Canadian Junior Hockey sexual assault trial proceedings today. The article said some elements of the story were graphic and disturbing. Yeah they weren’t kidding. Stock markets are back up above before tariff announcements. Anybody have opinions on that? Does it seem apparent that the markets think deals will be made or there will be continual pauses? Seems even though there’s still some hysteria regarding inflation and recession incoming, markets don’t really reflect that too much at this moment.

The media and the Dem’s want a recession badly to hang on Trump. They want to scare investors out of the market, and drive it down. In fact the massive amount of negative press at every turn is focused on one outcome. Ruining Trump. They don’t care what they wreck, or what damage they do, as long as they destroy Trump.

I believe we’re headed for a huge surge in the economy though, personally.

Just an a.m. view. Stock market is somewhat driven by uncertainty and fear. The tarrif issue fueled both factors causing a bit of run off. Since then, some good news – low inflation numbers and good employment numbers, and diminished prospects of a recession. Adding to that, everyone has sort of gotten used to the tariff news – much less of a big deal.
All that these factors together brought the market back.
Just a view.

I think this year the Vikings might have their best chance in a long time to get into the playoffs and make some noise. There is optimism on both sides of the ball now. The offense is fully formed, and practiced. We have seasoned players at the skill positions, and the O-line finally looks competent. The QB is unproven, but I think much like C.J. Stroud in his first year, and yes, even Patrick Mahomes, McCarthy is in a winning position. I’m quite confident KOC can get a lot out of him. Basically, all he has to do is not cock it up.

The defense under Flores is entering its third season, and we all know Flores brings more than two decades of NFL experience to the table. The players can play faster, and more furiously than ever this year.

If we stay decently healthy, this team will win a lot of games this year, and contend in the playoffs.

I might. I am open to being wrong, though.

O’Connell also got creamed in the big game against the Lions for the division. He is 0-3 when it counts.

One would think he could at least be 1-3 just by law of averages, but he is 0-3. Bad luck…or does he suck when it comes to big games?

Can he get better? Sure.

But if it happens again, he will be 0-4 in big games. That is a trend.

Both of those to me were on Darnold holding the ball too long and being indecisive.

Though I suppose at some point a coach has to recognize his player is failing and needs to change things up one way or another.

All that you say is valid points, but I am playing Devil’s Advocate.

Only five coaches have won a Super Bowl with a team after year five. Only two in the modern era: Cowher (14 seasons) and Reid (7 seasons).

So, O’Connell has time yet since he only have three seasons in. All his eggs are in the JJ basket at this stage.

All his eggs are in the JJ basket at this stage.

I agree with that. Coach and Kwesi are both tied to JJ and his ability to QB the franchise. I give it 3 years with JJ as the starter. If the playoff futility continues, we get to clean house again.

Or, the team finally wins a Super Bowl. Dammit.

I disagree that all the eggs are on McCarthy. Actually I see it quite the opposite. McCarthy is almost the least important ingredient at this point. He is cheap, and can be replaced if need be. The team is very solid around him.

So every year is different, and Flores may not be with us next year. We have some 21 players who will not be under contract next year at the moment, and we’re already $34M over the cap. The team next year is likely to be very, very different. This is what every team faces, and it’s up to the GM to keep fielding a competitive team. Thus, I can’t say how long the good times are apt to last.

Well, thanks to last second heroics to tie the game, the Jets took down the Blues in game 7 double OT last night. Now it’s every Minnesotan’s favorite team the Stars playing in Winnipeg on Wednesday for a best of 7.

That means that of 5 Canadian teams in the first round, 3 are still standing. I like our odds.

Worked for me in series 1…Oilers play the Golden Knights, I just don’t see how they can beat them, they match up well against Edmonton in all areas on the ice. So I won’t bet on the Oilers to win.

OK, here are the most common back spasm treatments:

Ice/heat: Apply ice or heat to the location of your back spasms. Wrap the ice pack or heating pad in a towel or pillowcase and apply it to your skin for 20 to 30 minutes. Then reapply after 20 to 30 minutes.

Over-the-counter pain medications: Over-the-counter pain medications, including acetaminophen (Tylenol®), naproxen (Aleve®) or ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®).

Muscle relaxants: Your provider may recommend taking a muscle relaxant like cyclobenzaprine, metaxalone or methocarbamol. If you do take them, take them at night (or when you’re not operating a car or heavy machinery) and only for 72 hours or less.

Physical therapy: Your healthcare provider might prescribe physical therapy, where you can learn relaxation techniques and stretches for your back muscles.

that sucks. Heat and stretching work best for me. I used to go to a chiropractor, and getting adjusted would help, but it would take two weeks or more to feel completely normal. Went to my GP one time, and he gave me flexoril or some such muscle relaxant. I hated how I felt on the meds, but for two days it helped me survive. Still took two weeks to feel completely normal.

So, the last few times it has happened, I just stretch, use Icy Hot or Sombra, and the heating pad. Cheaper than either doctor, and I feel normal in about the same amount of time.

Yoga has been the best thing I have to try and maintain flexibility.

My chiropractor told me, when you strain the muscle it takes a minimum of 6 weeks to get back to normal. After 3 weeks it will start to feel better.

Sounds like your chiropractor wants to get paid for six weeks.

No, he just wants the expectations of his visit to be real. I rarely have to go back after an adjustment. Maybe a second time if my spine is really locked up.

In my experience, chiropractors are mostly quacks who just care about cracking sounds and generally not really helping to get better (or pretending they can help things they can’t). I’m sure there are some good ones out there, but seems to not be the norm IMO.

I go to one of the best Chiros in the nation, unfortunately he is retiring. Most of the time when he fixes my issues there is no cracking noise. He explained to me the noise is gases being released between the bones in the joint.

Hey GF, read your comments above on your site showing up on the first page of a search for “Minnesota Vikings blogs” on Bing. I’ve said this before, but you understood that folks wanted to exchange their thoughts about the Vikings and other things without a whole lot of “management” by biased administrators.

You gave us all a forum to just be ourselves, and express our ideas without censure. It’s been a great ride thus far, and when we win the Super Bowl this year, this place will go crazy.

Thank you for being the guy who gave us a place to be idiots once in a while.

Honestly, it makes ZERO fiscal sense to me to have games overseas, especially when my team is playing:

  1. No concessions revenue for the home team.
  2. Do season tix holders not have to pay for game? Assuming yes, revenue from tix sales are a wash.
  3. No way in hell I am going to tune in at 7 am. When I do tune in at noon or so, I am going to fly through the commercials. So any company paying for advertisement time is getting zero ROI when it comes to me. The only possible way that I would ever tune in at 7 am is if the Vikes were in the Super Bowl and that was start time.
  4. Why don’t we see similar outreach efforts by MLB, NBA, NHL. Cuz it’s DUMB.
  5. Why don’t we see Arsenal play Tottenham Hotspur in Angel Stadium in Anaheim right in the heart of their schedule? Surely fans of the team would be excited to tune in at midnight their time? You know why they don’t? BECAUSE IT’S DUMB!

I assume Goodell and the NFL are getting something financially out of it.
I can’t imagine anybody in Europe interested in an evil American game over the long term. Americans are just a bunch of uneducated rednecks.

So yeah, it doesn’t seem to make much sense to continually do this.

I honestly don’t think so, for the reasons I stated. I bet your average Irish (Dublin) fan isn’t paying more than 100 euros to get into a game. A portion of ticket sales revenue must go to the venue itself. Concessions are virtually 100% local except the little bit of licensing revenue the NFL gets from selling a jersey. The ROI on an advertising dollar spent for these overseas games has to be shite vs your average 11 am (Mountain Time) start time.

It’s all about “growing the brand” for reasons that frankly mystify me. Then again, I’m still patiently waiting for one of these big trade deals to happen post tariff implementation, so what do I know about the big picture?

I’m not obtuse. You realize that for three weeks we have been getting the same line, straight from the horse’s mouth, that there “could be [trade deals] announced this week”. Media spin and crooked politics work both sides of the aisle.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Call me obtuse. The elephant in the room is China, not the hundred other countries that we are sparring with. Things are going to start getting tough real soon for Joe Consumer.

Don’t worry, though. Any day now some big trade deals will be announced!

How are problems going to get ‘rough for Joe Consumer’??
If he doesn’t buy anything from China he doesn’t pay any tariff. Almost all of the junk from China can be done without.
Scare Media seems to be working well with you..

MT Viking

Have you made an honest assessment of how many things the average consumer purchases in a month from China? You may be able to avoid buying anything from China but most cannot. The thinking that it is all junk that can be done without gives you peace, but is that true for the average consumer?

Just looking around my office – this laptop is made in, the monitor I’m viewing on is made in, the keyboard is made in, the mouse is made in, the desk my arms are resting on is made in, the chair my butt is sitting in is made in, you guessed it, China. But wait, you say, so far the tariffs don’t apply to computers. Then there is apparel, furniture and (I googled these three to round out the top five imports) sports equipment, footwear and toys. Many consumers will be in the market for these items, and the ability to pivot to American sources of these items will be constrained by the same supply chain problems we saw in the pandemic.

Yes you CAN buy that stuff from China, the question is do you HAVE to buy that stuff from China?? There are other options.

Like this weekend DJT was asked about ‘some prices going up’, he replied ‘some but some like gas/food/eggs/ect are going down’. Interviewer said ‘but strollers’. Trump interrupted ‘Strollers?? Gas/oil prices are a 1,000x more important than strollers’.

Keep focusing on the negative, the world is complicated you can always find something to be afraid of.

MT Viking

Incidentally neither the price of gas nor the price of eggs has gone down in my town.

There is absolutely no current option to buy a computer that doesn’t have some components made in China. You know what happens when demand outstrips supply.

I’m not sure we need to be calling people obtuse. There can be different opinions on this stuff. I know that I don’t always hold the company line on these things and I often have a healthy dose of healthy skepticism on some economic policies until the results show the rhetoric yea or nay. There are a lot of variables in the tariff issue including consumer response that can cause variable outcomes.

Post on the local FB page (anonymous of course) said, a lot of narcissists work at the local hospital. My wife posted that her husband doesn’t have a narcissistic bone in his body and has practiced for 30+ years in the medical field. The reply was he must be a gopher. I don’t even know what that means. However, it probably isn’t a compliment. That’s how I view your obtuse comment, you’ll notice I don’t come up with an unpleasant adjective like curmudgeon or spurious or lugubrious for the many posts that lean that way from various posters. It seems more and more that you want just a single narrative on subjects on here…can you explain why?
