Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts
Vikings-Browns
Yesterday’s game was not a pretty game, and it was a stressful and frustrating game to watch as a Vikings fan. It seems that each week, the team finds a different way to sabotage the game. Yesterday, the RB duo of Mason and Scott both coughed up the football to the Browns. I wasn’t expecting that to happen, but that’s what the Vikings are good at, disappointing us in new and exciting ways that we don’t expect. Combine the turnovers with he Vikings defense putting up a sub-par showing, especially early, and it’s a recipe for an unfavorable result. We also got to see a field goal attempt get deflected by a stadium camera wire, and it was somehow missed by all the officials and the eleventy billion cameras on the field.
Offensively, KOC was able to put togehter a game plan that mitigated the weakness on the injury ravaged O-line. This was no small feat against the lethal Browns defense, but I thought yesterday’s offensive approach was vastly improved over last week’s. Carson Wentz put up a gutsy performance against the #1 defense in the NFL, he was banged up but played through it and led the offense admirably. Ultimately, the defense got crucial stops toward the end of the game, and the offense capitalized on the opportunities. The Vikings were able to take the lead with 20 seconds remaining and hold on for the win. An ugly win is infinitely better than a pretty loss.
Final score, Vikings 21, Browns 17. The Minnesota Vikings are 3-2, which is a blessing considering how poorly the team, especially the offfense, has played for much of the season. I feel like the team is much better than they’ve played thus far, and I am hopeful that the team will improve significantly, especially as injured players get healthy. I normally dislike early bye weeks, but if there’s a year to have an early bye, this is the year. The injury bug has hit Minnesota hard, and the team sorely needs the break to help them get healthy.

Can’t believe the Jags beat the Chiefs… crazy.
Jags threw a long pass that the receiver bobbled, then 3 different Chief DBs got a hand on the ball and bobbled it as well. It finally fell incomplete.
Fun play to watch. Jags down 14-7 but driving before the half.
3 Chiefs touched the ball a total of 5 times before it hit the ground
In addition to the original Jag WR.
Jags just ran a 99 yard pick six to take the lead 21-14.
Just over 2m left in the 3rd.
See I’m the one vote for 11 wins.
Think the offense when healthy will be just fine and we can score.
Defense – little worried about run defense and three of next four teams can run the ball really well. But hopefully Flores will figure this out and come up with lots of run blitzes.
So, 11 is doable.
I didn’t vote, I am usually wrong anyway.
I often vote low on these things so that when I am wrong it usually works out better for us.
Well I really wanted to say 13 but that’s unlucky number and 11 is a lucky one. Old man logic.
I always thought Sanchez was a decent commentator.
Now felony charges against him.
I assume there is more to this than we know.
yeah he was drunk off is ass and assaulted a delivery driver who stabbed him in self defense….dude is lucky to be alive.
You should see the pictures of the old man he beat to a pulp.
Hmmm…
I know it’s only 14 snaps but I thought this was encouraging….
Certainly a positive, and honestly, you can’t overstate how well that patchwork line did yesterday.
Correct….our right tackle completely wiffed once….but other than that they were pretty solid.
That itself is pretty inexcusable though – how do you essentially not even touch someone? That should pretty much never happen, and it happens to the Vikings 4 times a game.
We need fat guys up front on Dline I would like to see Watson from Fl just to use to clogg middle once in a while
Fat boys, fat boys, whatcha gonna do?
Whatcha gonna do when they plow right through?
Big linemen, blockin’ the way,
Tacklin’ hard, they own the play!
Thanks GROK for those insperational lyrics!
Thought we had a lyricist here…
Undeniably Myles Garret is one of if not the best DE in the league right now. So, why didn’t Schwartz move him to the opposite side so he could go against Skule? Can he not play from the other side?
CD all but shut him down yesterday, and I don’t recall him getting a lot of help.
Wasn’t Garrett injured and didn’t practice all week – bad ankle I think. Perhaps he could only push off coming from one side.
Just a guess.
Because you always want your best rusher on the QB’s blind side.
I would want my best rusher in the backfield, whether it is blindside or not. I remember the last time the Vikings face the saints in the playoffs. The saints guards were horrible, so Zim lined Hunter and Griffen up as DTs.
The other argument is that they thought Garrett was good enough to get past Darrisaw allowing a lesser rusher to go against Skule and have a chance where a lesser rusher would have absolutely no chance of beating Darrisaw.
That’s some sound logic right there!
I would put my best guy against your worst guy every play.
I agree – pretty much disrupt every play. But I see the logic of the other option, too. Just maybe not the right choice.
#1 Defense in the NFL. I assume that they had ‘reasons’ that made sense to them.
Darnold has grown a lot. He’s a mature QB who tells it like it is.
He played great. The “play” was a batted ball.
And yet, he honestly stated his decision on his pass protection affected the play negatively, and ultimately allowed the ball to be batted.
I think he is being very gracious. Balls get batted all the time.
Regardless, he has turned into a top notch NFL QB.
Laughing…
If I had a teacher that looked like that I would have been much more interested in school.
Well at least her class.
Thought you were married to the “Teacher”.
I am now. I wasn’t when I was in grade school.
If I had a teacher that looked like that I would have been much more interested in school.
Well at least her
class. FIFYWell I assume that she would have been in her class, that is where I would be interested in being.
When I was in middle school, we had a teacher that was a NW Iowa 9. She only lasted 1 year because she was a horrible teacher, but I never missed her class.
I lost my virginity to my substitute French teacher when I was 15, and she was a genuine hottie.
Did your parents call the Police??
I wish I had been ‘abused’ by a hot teacher, female preferably.
It was odd. She showed up at a party and I was surprised to see her there. I’m assuming she was 22 or 23 years old. We went back to the house where she was renting a room in the basement. The homeowners were good friends of my parents. The wife came down and knocked on her door asking if she wanted breakfast the next morning, while I was there naked in her bed. I snuck out the basement door, and walked home. My mom was like “where have you been all night”. I told her I just got tired at the party, so I slept there. She was pretty mad at me.
“It’s AI – you can tell because there’s absolutely nothing wrong with her.”
K
Most, if not all, school districts would have an issue with the way she is dressed at a school event.
A parent could get away with that but not a teacher.
OK…. I found this hilarious.
Well our 1 and only NFL Championship was back in 1969 so not sure we should be laughing at others who are in a ‘Dry Spell’.
I knew this comment was coming. Grin.
And they have won five Super Bowls to our………..
I still find it hilarious.
me too.
Shouldn’t we get partial credit for 3 of their superb owls? We did give them their lineup for the 90’s thanks to the Walker trade.
Ouch.
Too Soon!!
Nice to see KOC actually can use his brain sometimes when you have a good D-line against you and your own offensive line sucks (quick game works!). Not challenging Wentz’s first down run that one time was questionable to me, though.
This game shall be known as the Game of a Thousand Penalties. Some questionable calls during the game, and you pretty much knew any explosive play by the Vikings was going to get called back by some likely petty offense. Almost unwatchable football. I think the Vikings got called for holding more times this game than the Packers likely will the entire year. The variability in officiating makes the NFL a joke of a product.
And finally, the field goal hitting the wire. The NFL supposedly not seeing that, with hundreds of eyes on it from NFL employees, not to mention all the fans and CAMERAS with slow-motion, just gives me more personal confirmation the NFL is rigged. That is not happening for a more popular team. That is all.
We were flagged 7 times, and the Browns were flagged 10 times. Not sure about rigging, but yeah, tired of seeing way too many penalties in games.
That doesn’t count offsetting penalties and unaccepted ones. There were at least 4-5 more.
Suppose you were a Brown fan. Rewatch the last TD to Addison. Note where out left tackle is when the ball is snapped. Looks a lot like the right tackle of the Packers when Rogers was playing there – one second ahead of the snap count.
Oof that is ugly
I think I see that a lot across the league though, frankly.
Just noting to JRo we got some calls too and this was a rather big one at a very important moment.
It was indeed.
I did notice that a few times (notable reference back to the Chiefs LT), but that is pretty much universally acceptable now. Like traveling in the NBA.
Thought the same thing. Skule jumped and came off his stance early enough I thought it would be called
The Broncos beating the Eagles in Philly was also a shocker. They held them to 17 points at home. Bo Nix pulled a McCarthy on them in the 4th qtr, scoring 18 points to overcome a 14 point deficit.
Not sure how much Garrett lined up on Darrisaw, but Darrisaw is elite if it was 75% of the snaps.
No doubt Darrisaw is Trent Williams 2.0.
CD effectively cancelling out MG was huge for our OL/Offense. We could have the other linemen, TEs, and RBs concentrate on the rest of the DL/Pass Rush.
Great to see.
I only saw a few minutes of the game while I was eating breakfast then listened to some more of it as I drove to church. My wife was off visiting my daughter and she had the car with the satellite radio so I had to scan frequencies on the radio until I finally found a station from Rice Lake that was carrying the game. Stupid Wisconsin. I’m sure that if I was in MN, every other station would have been carrying the game. Since we won, I watched the replay on NFL+ once I got home in the afternoon. I was pleasantly surprised how our patched together O-line was able to pass protect. Of course it helped that we did a lot more short, quick passes. Even though we won, I still voted for the 4-8 wins in the poll up above. I hope that they surprise me.
I think it’s 7-9 and thought 4-8 was too low.
So I went with 8-9.
Have to say, the Patriots beating the Bills last night was both unexpected and impressive. Got to hand it to Vrabel and his team for pulling that off in Buffalo. Stefon Diggs had 10 catches for 146 yards, but to me the big story was the Patriots defense. The Bills offense had scored 133 points in their first four games (33.25 pts per game) and they were held to 20 points last night at home. That’s almost two full TD’s fewer.
The Pats Defense got quite a few penalties for being mean to the Bills ball carriers, some of them even deserved.
It was a pretty physical game even by NFL standards.
As a guy who remembers football back in the 60’s, the NFL is tame these days IMO. Used to be you could pound the hell out of QB’s and receivers. Not anymore.
The Hitman did a interview explaining how he had to ‘relearn’ how to play safety once the NFL got ‘pussyfied’.
Pretty long at 21 minutes but interesting stuff if you have the time.
Remember Sendejo the heat seeking missile?
Yep
I’m not sure that guy knew how to use his arms. Just run and jump head first into anyone (including his own team players).
I wonder how he’s doing? I hope he (or any of the players he speared) aren’t dealing with the sequela of those helmet first hits.
Yeah, in another 10 years he might be having a hard time. Looking at Brett Favre – he looks frail with some mild tremors at this point.
“Make Football Violent Again”
I called him “Send-de-torpedo.”
Dejo auto rec
Thanks for providing. I remember how he was consistently flagged for hits that once upon a time were considered awesome.
Have always felt a little different about football toughness.
In most ways, it’s fairly easy for a safety or DB to clobber the piss out of a defenseless receiver reaching to catch a ball. Looks tough too.
But put that same DB one on one with a running back like Henry and Chubb, and see how tough they are.
And for real toughness, watch a LB like Fred Warner and note how much ground he gives up when filling a hole with a back coming at him full speed. That’s toughness.
I’m just saying a guy like Sean Taylor would have been fined penniless, and suspended endlessly in today’s NFL.
After we fix our OLine, I’m hoping they spend a bit of time and $$ to figure out why our average starting point on kickoffs is the 20, and our opponents’ is the 35.
Maybe while they’re looking at the situation they can figure out why 41 keeps holding.
It’s weird when we say we have to fix the O-line. This team has invested everything possible over the last ten years trying to fix the O-line. This year we brought in a couple vets we felt would really bolster the line, and drafted a guy we think will be really good for a long time. Right now it looks like our starting center is done for his career with too many concussions, and we had a guy start this game who never played center in his life.
We’re back to having several good pieces with O’Neil, Darrisaw, and likely Jackson being solid. Fries is doing pretty good too. Now we have to get a center again (maybe).
Guess I could have used the word “mend.”
Mr. Brandel apparently performed well at C. No fumbled snaps – only one off target shot gun snap that Wentz was able to go down and field and still get the play off. I did not notice a jail break up the middle.
I am interested to see his PFF grade for the game.
I think he deserves a ton of credit. Pretty amazing job yesterday IMO.
I noticed KOC’s gameplan changed. There were a lot more short passing plays and quick outs. It was also good to see a play action roll-out easy pass.
If I’m going to criticize KOC for his other gameplans, I have to give him credit when he mixes it up, too.
The offense seemed to be doing ok. The lost fumbles really hampered us overall. Also, the missed field goal that wasn’t a miss.
“I noticed KOC’s gameplan changed”
‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ or in this case ‘Desperation is the mother of change”.
It only took him 50 games to figure out when you have a shit O-line that this gameplan might work!
Don’t know he has a situation was he was down 3 starters on the OL in addition to a couple of backups. Patchwork or Decimated seem like the best words to describe what he was looking at.
I noticed this as well. Good to see something different and it mostly worked.
One thing that looked awkward was Wentz rolling to his left.
He had to turn his entire body around to throw, wasting time.
Saw that a few times and thought WTH ??
Yeah, not everybody is Patrick Mahomes.
Wentz is nearly 240 pounds…that is a lot human to get squared up while moving left to make a throw…he can do it but he isn’t going to look fluid or nimble doing it.
And really hard to do with banged up ribs from week before.
true also.
He changed but he really did not like having to do it. I am not sure if its ego or pride but him adjusting is like pulling teeth, you can tell in his body language in the post game presser.
Lol probably true
I did not know this…
In case you’re wondering…
We knew he was a stopgap for Addisons suspension and now mostly depth against injury. Disappointed with how many drops he has had so far this year.
How many drops has he had?
I recall several which is a high percentage of his targets.
Around one a game he started, just from memory
Translation… coach put me on house arrest.
The Ginger Jesus rides again!!!
That a’boy Carson!
The guy is playing well and plenty tough!
That is actually very accommodating of ICE. Arrestees don’t even have to worry about road rash!
Not gonna lie – this win was more exciting for me than blowing out the Bungles.
Won even though there were a ton of starters out, the OL held Garrett at bay, and Cam Akers threw a TD…..not bad.
It’s kind “meh” for me. I’m happy we won, but I worry about our run defense and fumbling problem.
So we beat the #1 Defense with an O-line missing 3 starters and it was “meh” for you? Some people are hard to impress. I was totally expecting a loss yesterday (and expected them to iron out some things during the bye), so I feel we are ahead of the curve.
Yeah, because we were going against a crap offense with a rookie QB. There was some good, but also some bad.
And not to take away from the win (a win is a win) but believe Garrett was playing inured and not up to snuff.
I’m worried about these dumb penalties. Did we have 3 or 4 on special teams? Short of landing zone on a kickoff and 2 or 3 holding calls on returns.
If we are mostly concerned about special teams penalties we are in a good place.
Shouldn’t hurt us giving Philadelphia the ball at their 35-40 while we start at the 10, with our dominant run defense and highly opportunistic offense with strong pass protection.
Maybe more exciting but not more enjoyable, for me (and my heart) at least.
Lot of sickness here, probably COVID strain. Starts with a sore throat and morphs into lots of coughing and leaky nose.
Everyone in my family has gotten it, including my wife. Knocked my brother out so bad, he is even taking a couple of days off harvest. That never happens.
So far, I haven’t got it. I went to Hy-Vee early yesterday morning to get some Theraflu for her, and the shelf was wiped out, so we must not be the only ones.
I suspect I will succumb in the next couple of days, baring a miracle.
We have a stock of cold and flu meds on hand. 6 bottles of Dayquil, and 4 bottles of Nyquil. We have something called Air Raid on hand too, along with other meds. My wife would have made a great boy scout.
Sorry to hear your family is ailing. Hope it passes quickly.
I like a shot of hot brandy with honey in it when I have a sore throat. Tasty!
Always have a bottle of NyQuil on hand. Helps to get some sleep which helps with healing. Not a cure but knocks down the symptoms for several hours.
We have a variety of things on hand, but the wife wanted a specific medicine. Her sick-addled brain demanded it. I was okay with errand running at that stage because I could buy treats for myself.
I’m kicking back with Gummy Worms while everyone else is IVing ivermectin!
6 BOTTLES of Dayquil? That is like a 45 day supply for an adult. You must have got a deal at Costco!
We are well stocked across the board. Walk-in pantry is completely full. She could probably feed 10 people for 4 weeks with everything in there. We have everything we need to survive pretty much unaffected as an older couple, should a hurricane or other disaster interrupt the logistics of food or sundry supply to our area.
I’m a prepper…but I don’t have that much cold medicine, that’s fo sho. Probably one bottle of Nyquil that expired in 2022, were I to bet.
Laughing… my wife and I grew up without much. She grew up in a 900 sq ft 2 bedroom 1 bath house with her two sisters in South Texas. Oh yeah, no central heat or air conditioning either. Meals were intermittent sometimes. That childhood drives her food insecurity, I think. She always has a lot of food in the house.
Can confirm. I took a picture of his lotion shelf…
Plus you have vital items like pineapple for your cole slaw.
#grin
Something going around Minot called “Foot and Mouth disease”…sounds brutal.
I had never heard of it before…
But plenty of my liberal friends frequently have “Foot in Mount disease”.
yes there is a lot of hand foot and mouth disease in our area right now
That time of the year. Weather changes and….boom.
Hope your family gets well and that you avoid it.
That sucks. We will remember you with fondness.
I had a good run.
But it hasn’t caught me yet!
More info on the missed kick (not).
Refs’ blown call robbed Vikings kicker of his shot at NFL history
Hopefully the NFL will do the right thing and take that miss off his record.
LOL. They don’t care about correcting wrongs. If they did, the Saints Superbowl would be vacated. But we all know they wanted that and made it happen.
Did the players not see it hit the wire? Is that something KOC could have thrown the challenge flag on?
That’s what I wondered about, as well. Surely Reichard saw it hit the wire?
It’s so crazy that nobody saw it on the field. Watching from home, it simply looked like it knuckled/veered sharply, which can happen on kicks sometimes. But nobody on the field saw the wire?
We eeked out a win in week five against the Browns, so I am pretty confident everything is back on track and looking good for a playoff push!
