Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

After watching most of that shit-show yesterday, I really have nothing good to say other than the defense put up a good fight until they hit threshold and quit.

I guess the announcers mentioned that the Patriots and Vikings took a similar route, going with a young QB on a rookie deal, and boosting the rest of the roster with free agency and drafts. We can see that the Patriots did a much better job of evaluating talent both at the QB position, and free agents, and the draft. Out of 28 draft picks by Kwesi, 14 are no longer on the team. That level of failure is why the team has 4 wins this season.

Team sucks. I am fine with trading whomever you have to. Jefferson would be first on my list to trade. Talent is there, but I am not a fan of the Diva WRs. Get a few draft picks for one of the best WR out there. Maybe he can have his dream of reuniting with his friends in Cincinnati. My issue with the “trade everyone” strategy, is that Kwesi will still be responsible for the draft. You could give the Vikings 2 picks in every round, and he will still fail.

I’ve said here many times, leading up to the draft, I thought Nix was the most pro ready QB, and Caleb was a great athlete, but had a ways to go to be a good NFL QB.

It certainly matters who drafts you, the scheme you are put into, and the coaching you receive. With that in mind, I thought after the draft, that Nix benefited by being drafted by Denver with Sean Payton as his coach. He had a solid rookie season, and outperformed all the QB’s of his class. This year, opposing teams are playing him much differently, and he’s not as good statistically. Still he is ahead of the curve for young QB’s.

According to this chart, only 7 teams have fewer dropped passes in the league than the Vikings. Top 8 in fewest dropped passes? That’s pretty good.

I think it’s a valid question, but he’s had a lot of success his first 3 years. This year, let’s face it. The team doesn’t have a competent QB. Thus we are scoring fewer points than all but four teams. That’s why we have only won 4 games.

I really find that hard to believe. KOC is suppose to be the QB guru and everyone in the. world knows you need competent QB play in the NFL.
If KAM isn’t listening to KOC on this particular subject – He’s the damn expert – then he’s not the brightest GM around.

Edgecrusher71

No at the end of the day it IS the GMs job. KAM gets blame for the good and the bad even when it’s not his doing. Just have to be consistent. I give him credit for the FA home runs even though I suspect Flores had more to do with that than KAM. So by the same regard KAM gets the blame even if it was more of KOCs fault. It’s his job either way.

This is the age old argument that Parcells expressed. He said “if I’m gonna cook the meal, at least let me choose the ingredients”. But the GM has to manage contracts and salary cap, while building a Championship caliber team. It’s a high wire act, that requires a horse trading instinct, excellent financial knowledge, and yes, an understanding of NFL talent at every position. I don’t think KAM has all of that. KOC has to take what he’s given, and make the most of it. I do think KOC thinks he can win with almost anyone under center, but maybe he’s finally seeing that isn’t the case. He had two veteran QB’s that were able to run his offense. The rookies can’t yet.

I’ve made my thoughts on him clear this year. We will never win the Owl with him.

He’s too stubborn in his crap offensive scheme.

His initial gameplans are awful more times than not.

The team never seems ready to play in big games.

He is the worst 3rd and short play caller in the league by a mile.

Far more often in game I think the play calling in general sucks than I think it’s good.

I was a quasi-fan up until this year, but this year I’ve seen the light, as it seems you are starting to do as well.

Maybe we’ll score with less than 45 seconds left against WAS to go up by 13 points…only to give up a TD on the ensuing kick return, allow a successful onside kick, and then have six missed tackles on a Rodriguez check down capped by Harrison Smith attempting a shoulder tackle only to be dragged 15 yards into the end zone.

As much as I miss watch Kirk Cousins throw the ball competently, the Vikings unloaded him at the right time…His game has visibly gone down hill. The quote from the article…

The pass-catchers being unable to catch anything certainly didn’t help, but the four-time Pro Bowler made it clear his best days are behind him.

Cousins is throwing the ball with really good touch and accuracy like he always has. Would have won the game in the end on that last drive, but the receivers dropped three passes in a row. The last two were for gains over 20 yards each. Cousins fired the ball into them perfectly.

I think Blake Brandel should get a one game suspension for that deliberate helmet to helmet hit on Josh Jobe (who has already missed game time twice for concussions, one more and he is automatically on IR). I didn’t have a problem with it. RB was being tackled and he tried to push the pile a few yards further. Yes helmet to helmet was a problem but reacting in real time to two people moving in space is tricky.
I was glad to see someone on the offense still giving extra effort trying to make good things happen. Might be a fine, don’t see much more than that.

That’s why barring a significant improvement to league average (instead let’s say a tepid improvement to #31) I would draft a QB high in 2026 draft. Otherwise if the trend of slow development continues we are in a must draft situation in 2027 which always leads to a reach.

Ummm McCarthy sucks, and misses his targets a lot. That whole he throws the ball too hard line is BS. He just flat misses guys. Brosmer just flat missed his receivers too. Drops happen to every QB, and they are usually drive killers, but that doesn’t excuse inaccuracy.

I didn’t say this year and I still think he’ll be fine and win Super Bowls. My stance there hasn’t changed and doesn’t make my thought that an undrafted rookie from a run first, mid-tier school was going to be worse wrong.

Laughing… all you said over and over was how the JJ era had begun. Yeah, now it’s “I didn’t say when…

McCarthy is the worst QB in the league. He isn’t close to being good.

Reminds me of a few other QBs, in their first year or two starting, over the past 20-30 years, but more recently; Caleb Williams, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Bryce Young, just to name a few.

Well two things… first, he’s in his second year. Last year all he had to do was sit, listen, study film, and learn. He should have come into camp with a complete understanding of the system, and basic defensive schemes and structures. He should have been able to run the offense with some semblance of efficiency. Instead, we get a guy who looks like he hasn’t learned anything, and is winging it most of the time.

Second, he often misses receivers by a LOT. That’s why KOC has been trying to work on his mechanics all of a sudden. Under pressure he just sails balls, or misses short. That is a very big problem.

Again, other than the sitting out his first year, this is what everyone said about the QBs I mentioned. I am not saying JJ will ever be good, but I am wise enough to know you don’t cast him aside after 7 games played.

JJ couldn’t play, so what were we supposed to do? Have Jefferson be the qb?

That wasn’t the point. I heard for weeks before JJ got hurt that they should just play Brosmer “because it can’t get any worse”.

Who said that?
And perhaps even more importantly. being the best of a bad lot is hardly anything to feel good about.

Personally, I’m not sure it was any worse. At this point in both of their careers, they not ready for the NFL.

I still cannot stand KOC.

Lots of reasons, but most of all it seems that our team is never truly prepared and firing on all cylinders each game. Seems like we’re constantly playing catch-up.

Am I being harsh? Am I alone on this?

Almost makes me yearn for Mike Zimmer. Seems like KOC is always whispering sweet little nothings in the ear of the QB.

Wouldn’t say I can’t stand him, but I am not necessarily a big KOC fan. I think he has mostly failed in key games over his career. Play calling and clock mgt are sub par.

Speaking of clock mgt it was like Seattle took a page from the Vikings playbook at the end of the second half.

They let the Vikings milk the clock down sitting on three timeouts. Of course with 50 seconds left on the clock special teams gave up a 20 yard return and then a couple of short plays got them within FG range, very generous of our squad.

Surly, I don’t think the patriots did a better job of evaluating the QB. They just had the #2 pick and were able to take Maye.

At this point, I hope the Vikings don’t win another game this season. It would be more beneficial to lose out then to try and win out.

I don’t think the team needs to try to lose out, they’ll just do it.

I’ll truly be pissed if they finish 9-8…for no reason whatsoever but to continue in this no man’s land of late round picks. Even if McCarthy comes up to average play next year this roster cannot win in the playoffs.

I just puked in my mouth a little thinking of Harrison Smith out there in 2026.

Can McCarthy suddenly become great?

Not looking good right now. Hopefully he can have an epic comeback story and shut everyone up. That’s a rough road with this team right now though.

We all know he’ll eventually leave the Vikings and become a HOFer with another team because Vikings.

I’m hopeful he hit his nadir in GB and will now start showing slow improvement over the last five games, as the team can relax as they kissed their chances of a playoff spot or even a third place finish in the NFC north.

Crazy that we went from the QB roster last year to this…we don’t have a QB on the roster ATM.
