Vikings Discussion and Random Thoughts
The draft is over, and although the Vikings didn’t have a ton of draft capital to work with, I think they managed to have a pretty successful draft. The Vikings entered the draft with four picks, and left the draft with five draft picks and also added a young veteran via a trade.
Vikings Draft Discussion
Right guard was one of the team’s main areas of need entering the draft, and they addressed that in the first round and drafted a guy who many considered to be the second-best guard available who should compete for the starting spot at right guard this preseason. The Vikings picked up a potential playmaker WR who could also be a returner, a defensive lineman, a linebacker, and a tight end. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah also added a player via trade as they traded back with Seattle on day 3 to acquire QB Sam Howell, story courtesy of AP. Howell is a 24 year old QB drafted in 2022 by the Commanders. KOC and KAM have had their eye on Howell for a while, and they feel he will be a solid addition to the QB room and someone who could step into the QB2 role. All in all, I believe the draft went well for Minnesota, continuing an off-season that has Vikings fans feeling excited and optimistic.
After the Draft
Obviously, we won’t know anything until we see these guys in NFL action, but when you look at what they were able to do with the limited resources that were available to them, it appears to have been a successful draft. In addition to the draft picks, they once again added a boatload of undrafted free agents to bring to training camp and compete to make the final 53 man roster.
Vikings Future Discussion
I really like what I’m seeing from the front office and coaching staff. The front office and staff work together, KAM makes the decisions but defers to the coaches/scouts to provide the knowledge about the game and players. They make decsions proactively and are always thinking many steps ahead. I look back to the days of Spielman, and it always seemed like he was just reacting to situations as they came, where these guys have already planned for the situation and are implementing the plan they had in place to deal with it. I love where this team is heading, and I am very excited for the future of this team.

This is pretty solid stuff and most everyone who has played golf read Hogan’s Five Lessons. No reason this won’t work for most people – esp. open close the stance.
One possible problem, and I’m one of the them, I play most all shots with an open stance But with square shoulders. thus I swing along my shoulder line, not my foot line. As I’m older the open stance helps me clear my lower body better.
Again, this is solid stuff. But I would recommend reading Hogan’s complete book and try to follow all Five of the lessons, not just the stance. Think golfers get in trouble taking a piece from this system and a piece from the next. .
That said for most normal golfers, not me with a bad knee, would benefit from a slightly closed driver stance as it promotes hittng a draw and more distance. And a slight open stance with short irons will promote a steeper angle of attack and a higher ball flight – which is great for stopping on the green.
Thanks JR. Great commentary. Personally I line up with a very slightly closed stance (practically square) and one thing I have always struggled with is pulling my wedges and short irons to the left. I offset this tendency by aiming 5 yards or more right of my target, knowing that I’m going look up and see the ball moving left. It never occurred to me to simply open my stance. I think I’ll give this a try the next time I play. If this works out, I’m gonna be knocking flagsticks down! (just kidding).
If you pull the ball with short irons, an open stance will more than likely make it worse. Stance or not, moving the ball back some will help with a pull. You may find you can open your stance some AND move the ball back, will produce a very straight shot. And this setup will produce high shots with stopping power.
A good drill is to practice and keep moving the ball back in stance until the ball is going right, Then open stance some, from that ball position, and see flight of ball. And adjust from there.
Lastly. all short irons and wedges, should be controlled by direction of arm swing, not the body rotation. Practice – stand perfectly still and hit wedges with nothing but an arm swing. Your body will of course move some, but it is reactionary to the arm swing. Even better, do it with your feet together. You’ll get the idea.

Thanks JR. For the record, I am a high ball hitter. I can hit balls easily over trees etc. I don’t why, it’s just natural. I can flop the ball around the greens too. I lay the club wide open, then swing through. Never had a problem being able to do that.
I would assume some free agent signings will be happening soon.
All quiet on the home front
After the UDFA signings, I think there are only two “vacancies” on the roster. Don’t see many signings on the horizon.
We might see one now, CB maybe.
More activities later on when teams make moves and cut decent players for Cap Reasons.
Injuries, guys just cutting it, etc will definitely result in some roster moves.
If there is a quality CB out there they could sign, I’d vote yes on that.

I saw where some pundits are commenting on why Shedeur Sanders fell from grace in the draft. Todd McShay is saying that Sanders missed something on an install package with the Giants, and when challenged on it, failed to admit his mistake.
OK, I played QB, and I know a lot about offensive formations, sets, and personnel packages, but I don’t recall ever hearing the term “install package”. The only thing I can think of is they gave him a play call, and then “sent in” a personnel package that didn’t line up with the play call, to see if he would catch it. Otherwise, I don’t know what they’re talking about.

Napa sucks, go to autozone
I did that once and they gave me the wrong parts, cost me 6 quarts of oil and refused to give me a refund. Not to mention the people that work there tend to not know a gas pump from a dip stick. I stick with O’Reilly.
The name on the front of the store doesn’t matter as much as who’s behind the counter. Find the store with the old guy that hates the computers and still pulls out the book to look up parts. That’s the store you go to.
No autozone in Glendive. My neighbor is the store manager at the local napa so that works out good for me.

I am in the process of changing the cam and lifters in my daughters jeep cherokee. I am hoping for a major hail storm today, so I can throw the parts back on and let insurance junk it out.

Oh for sure, and agreed. As iv stated many times, many of my close friends are currently members of some branch of the armed services, National Guard, Navy, Marines. And them and their people are good people. But they can also confirm, they know and have worked with terrible people in their time in the service. I just dont prop people up on a pedestal JUST because of their line of work was my point. – Im also stirring the pot.
The way I explained it to my kids when they were younger, is asking them if people were overall “good” or “Bad” and what percent did they think were “bad”. They both landed on 10% or so as being bad. Good guess for 10-12 year old children.
Then, I asked them what politicians were. Were they people or not? So, 10% are bad. Same with cops, military, etc.
Just because someone wears fancy clothes or costume, it does not make them a good and decent person.

Did you see the video the Unsubscribe guys put out over the weekend? The Buffalo Public School system is now in a fight against Angry Cops and he has the Fat Electrician, Donut Operator, Brandon Herrera, Eli, and a massive veteran group behind him. He said that they have been intentionally hiding sexual assaults and even an attempted abduction. I don’t think this is going to end well for them.

I’m pumped about the Donovan Jackson pick. Listening to the dude, he is one down to earth and well-mannered young man. He’s also been watching tape regularly since he was in middle school according to one interview. I love having that kind of guy on the team, especially the OL.
Good offenses usually have a good OL, and if healthy the Vikings’ OL could be one of the best. Haven’t been able to say that in a long time.
I’m excited to hopefully be able to get 2 yards running the ball when needed.

Good offenses ALWAYS have good lines. Look what happened to Mahomes in the games where his line faltered. They lost badly. Same with Brady. He had a top 5 O-line every single year in New England, and in Tampa his first year.
Give me a top level O-line, a solid receiving TE, and a speedster on the outside, and I will put an offensive powerhouse on the field every single year, almost regardless of the QB (NFL caliber QB’s can ALL throw the damn ball).
You can build a good running game, set up by the passing game, using a decent RB with a good O-line. Force defenses to play two deep safeties the whole game, and run against light boxes.
In the end, it all starts with an O-line that can keep the QB clean (especially with the game on the line) and open holes for the running back.
And especially up the middle. The center of the pocket not collapsing on the QB during passing plays and the middle push on running plays is key. Haven’t had that in a while.
Definitely. When the opposing teams can deposit your center and guards into the QB’s lap play after play, you aren’t gonna do well. Especially in the 4th quarter, when you’re trying to win the game at the end.
Yeah, the QB needs to understand how to move in the pocket too. I think Sam made the line look worse than they really were last year. There were multiple times per game that there was a decent pocket there, but he would panic and go backwards instead of stepping up into the pocket, thereby stepping right into the edge rusher that would have been pushed behind him.
And he was a bit slow going thru his progressions which didn’t help things.
If the O-line doesn’t give the QB a pocket to operate out of there is no “movement in the pocket”. Watch Mahomes against the Bucs in the Super Bowl a few years ago. He is known as a very mobile, evasive QB. Didn’t help him a lick against that defense.
Sort of a balance here. Most of the big time rushers are on the edge and they come up field fast. Most good pocket QB’s ‘feeling’ this pressure will step up in the pocket. Problem is if you have one of your IOL getting steamrolled there’s no place to really step up into.
Wasn’t disagreeing only saying that Sam made the line look worse. There were a lot of times where there was a pocket to operate from but his instinct is to bail backwards instead of into the pocket and instead of having a chance at making a play, an incompletion or a 2 yard sack he would escape backwards and take a 12 yard sack.
Yeah, Sam is a really good QB when he knows where he’s going with the ball, and has some space to get it there. Even if it’s a tight space. If you force him off his first read, he can still make the throw, but he starts getting nervous. If you get pressure on him “routinely” he tends to get worser and worser as the game wears on.
He still has some wheels, and can make some plays with his legs, but he ends up making bad throws, and eventually the offense bogs down.
I really feel Sam is going to struggle in Seattle.
Going to be fun to watch
Well, I don’t know much about Seattle. I don’t follow them or watch them. No idea who their OC is or what he likes to do. That said, Seattle traditionally is a team that is a run heavy offense. If they are able to do that, and play great defense (like when Russell Wilson was there) it will take a lot of pressure off Sam.
They traded most of their receiving breads, I’m not sure who he’s going to throw the ball to.
he won’t have the luxuries he had in Minnesota.
I’m sure of that. This offense is a mature, full of really good to great players at the skill positions. His teammates could carry him, while he learned and got familiar with the offense.
I doubt he’ll get that in Seattle.
McCarthy is really lucky coming into this year. He almost can’t fail at this point.
He’s got the best situation of any rookie quarterback I can remember.

As I mentioned on Saturday, on our way home from The Day of Errands, we stopped at a book sale and I found volume three of Truly Tasteless Jokes. After mentioning that, I perused the book some more and the title is spot on. Many I wouldn’t repeat. I feel dirty after reading more of it. There is a section of dead baby jokes (who is old enough to remember those?) and mommy, mommy jokes. However, there are a few that are worth repeating.

The school I went to had a lot of Polish and a lot of Swedish descendants, we traded Sven and Ole and Polack jokes, we all laughed at them not knowing we were being hurtful or should feel hurt.
My neighbor growing up was Polish, so he would tell Norwegian jokes.
I don’t remember any of the specific jokes, but I remember the Swede vs Norwegian jokes. Also, the jokes that made the Swede big and strong but really dumb. I feel like I was let down by society because at that time I was unaware as how offended I should have been.

They were both getting physical lined up for free throws and hes basically pushing his elbow against the back of Lebrons head lol, he does get called for it but, still, good. It rattled Lebron.
Yeah, I didn’t think it was too violent. Just a message. Rudy wasn’t out to take his head off. I might have ignored it if I was a ref and considered it a game within a game. Might tell them to not let it get out of hand, though.
LeBron acted like he was going to go after Rudy, but all it took was the ref standing in his way. I would have loved to see LeBron get his ass kicked.

Well, color me surprised, I will absolutely admit I appear to be wrong that the NBA wouldn’t let the wolves win (or they would shoot themselves in the foot like they usually do). Though the series isn’t over, and from what I’ve seen and heard, the refs have been heavily tilted towards the Lakers in a couple games. But if they win, that’s great. Will they win another series? We’ll see, but I have my doubts.
Just remember – you started this “trash takes” thing many months ago, so don’t be surprised when it comes back again. 😉
I saw it firsthand, the refs did everything they could keep the Lakers in that game on Friday. The officiating was extremely one-sided.

They wont, Lakers played the last trick in their book yesterday with that same lineup for a full half bit. And it failed. LeFlop and Luka a tired and like I said before the series started, as of this date the Wolves are a deeper and better team, period. Lakers might take it on Wednesday but, regardless this series is over imo. No we just need Golden State to beat the Rockets and we have a clear path back to the Western finals.
Yep, I can see the Lakers taking the next one. Then hopefully Wolves close it out. The sooner Lebron is out, the better. He gets waaaaaaaay too much attention.
Listening to the ESPN announcers yesterday, slobbering over the Lakers and especially LeBron was quite nauseating.

Haven’t watched an NBA game in maybe 10 yrs. Jumped on the Twolves band wagon. The game sure has changed, but I was entertained. Perfect amount of investment. I am entertained, have a dog in the hunt, but not devastated if they lose.
I used to watch the heck out of the NBA. Man, those guys used to battle. I basically quit watching once Duncan called it quits.
Now I only check it out a bit if the TWolves are in the playoffs.
I will now grade the Vikings draft because I am highly qualified with my deep knowledge of college players that borders on supernature.
Jackson (G): Not flashy, but I am generally happy with trench building. We have to hold up against DLs like the Eagles. A
Felton (WR): I am not excited about this. I’d rather get another trench guy than a WR. However, I can see some reasoning if Addison and Nailor are question marks beyond this season. C
Dawkings (DL): More trenches in the fifth round? I can’t complain about that. A
King (LB): Not a trench person, but also not a WR. B
Bartholomew (TE): He’s not Loveland and who wants a guy named Bartholomew on the team? What is this, the 1800s? C
Overall grade: Incomplete because we really don’t know until they play…

In thinking about Rodgers and the Steelers, I think he might hold off a little longer before he signs with them. I think Rodgers wants to stay out of the football realm as long as he can, and garner as much “personal time” as possible before he gets back into the arena as it were. He may have even said that to the Steelers, which is why they weren’t panicking about a QB.

One would think that all the time I spend at the Gym/Rec Center (8-9 hrs a week) and the exercises I do here at home I would have worked those muscles. Nope, they are acting like I am an old guy who never does anything.
I guess sitting at the keyboard does not could as exercise. lol
Laughing. At 70, I creak around the house and when I do weeding etc, it bothers me too. Then I get on a golf course and think I can still swing the club like I did 30 or 40 years ago.
I have to admit, I can still turn decently, and swing the club smoothly at 70. But yeah, I’m sore the next day (like this morning).
No matter what mobility/strength workouts I do at the gym, at home work still leaves me sore the next day. I like to think you can’t quite replicate real work activities, but more than likely it’s just my ‘age’ factor.
As they say, gettin old ain’t doe sissies.
My brother always told his sons they had show muscle. All of their strength training did nothing for real world strength.
No substitute for throwing around bales of hay or hauling buckets of cement around.

Yoga has been absolutely fantastic for my aches and pains. Plus I can plant my palms on the ground now while bending over stiff legged, last time I could do that my age was in single digits.
That is actually impressive. It would do me well to unlock my hamstrings and lower back like that.

In a twist that I certainly didn’t see coming….my toyota dealership actually had the best deal on 4 new tires, so getting those put on right now…
Tires are one of my least favorite purchases but also one of my favorites since you can feel the difference
Before driving the Taco Ma up here from SoCal I had the tires checked. It had not been driven much and had been sitting out in the sun for several years. Going 750 miles in 90-110 temps on old tires did not seem like a good idea.
Tire dealer checked, rotated the tires and told me ‘no problem, they are good to go’. Seems he could have said ‘needs to be replaced’ and made a sale. They are still hanging in there but I am looking to replace them soon.
since i have gotten boujee and gotten “newer” toyota vehicles with the full warranty, i have decided to just bring my vehicles to them for the oil changes etc…
so when he brought me a couple ideas for new tires (the ones i have on my rav4 had 72k miles on them and i knew they were getting bad), i was like well we’ll see…
so when i went and got pricing from discount tire and fred’s tire, they were all more expensive….which shocked me. so i went with the dealership.
I found the same with the Mazda dealership. But the kia tried to eff me over so Discount Tire got my business. Saved about $200 going there vs the crooked dealership.
For me, the dealership has the cheapest oil change around. And since Ford has been pushing the idea, I even have them come pick my car up so I don’t have to even leave the house.
Cheaper to do it in my driveway.
When I use my Ford points, it is cheaper for them to do it.
And then you know it is done right. I have had many a place mess up something as simple as an oil change (and tire rotations, nearly every time), much less the incompetence displayed for bigger things (and sometimes unable to verified because you can’t check if they messed up, just have to trust they probably did it right, until something breaks).
If I did it, it would not be done right.
This is my reality as well.

Pretty hard to screw up an oil change, assuming you had some wrench time with dear old dad and watch a YT video or two.
Dear old dad did not do his own oil changes as far as I am aware. And on my old 1970 Maverick, I could do some stuff like change the spark plugs etc, but on these new fangled vehicles, I’m not touching anything under the hood.
You would think that, but I had my oil changed and they forgot to put the filler cap back on. Drove all the way to Yellowstone hauling a camper before I noticed it. Called the place and they said if I send them the receipt for the filler cap they will reimburse me. I asked what their plan was to reimburse me if I had engine failure due to contaminates getting into my engine. They said nothing.
Because I am a car whore, I change my own oil on my…let’s see…two JD tractors, trail mower, riding mower, 2011 Furd Ranger, 2015 Polearse Ranger, and 2016 Merc Sprinter. They are all easy to do.
I let the shop change the oil in my 2 Lexi (gotta pop off all these plastic covers and they are cartridge filters), Vulva (ditto), 2021 F150, and 2024 Bronco (heavy vehicles with skid plates making access hard). However, I always check the oil level and look for leaks when I pick them up and the next morning.
When I said hard to screw up, I meant for owner to personally screw up…a shop is totally different, never know if they get distracted and forget to do something.
I used to change my own oil. I worked in a shop during the summer when my full time job was on lay off.
I thought you meant it is hard for a mechanic to screw up an oil change.
My first summer job where I actually had set 40+ hours and a time card (remember those?) was at a green tractor dealer in my hometown. Working there gave me a somewhat dim view on how dedicated and focused mechanics are on routine ho-hum things like belt and fluid changes.
Of course I was not immune, drove the auger of a used combine through the side of the shop while backing a combine into the wash bay, and came within millimeters of dropping a baler over the side of a flatbed trailer (probably followed by the chained front end loader, tractor, and me) while loading a half dozen up to ship to auction.
And yet in the old days how many folks over tightened (beyond hand) when they put on the new oil filter.
You literally can barely trust anyone in the car business. I’ve had them mess up stuff more than I can count on two hands. I usually try to do stuff myself if it’s viable.

Accountant 2 is a notch below the first. It has some fun moments, but it is a little light on action and leaves some things on the table that should have been featured.
Sinners is getting shilled. Way overhyped. It was interesting to watch, but it does not deserve to be worshipped. Doubtful I will ever rewatch.
I actually got in a Twitter argument about it the other day with a guy who thought it was the second coming. He said I was a troll, not objective and didn’t pay attention to the movie because I didn’t get on my knees for it. I then proceed to explain the allegorical principles of the movie to him, which he never even noticed even though they are as obvious as the nose on my face.
And I’m the one who didn’t pay attention. It is too laugh!

I enjoyed the first Accountant movie. I will probably watch both of those movies once they are streaming.
Watched Havoc yesterday. Violence was fun, but man, there was nobody to really root for. Realized a few minutes in that if everyone on screen died, that was fine with me.
The Agency (showtime series) was better. Just finished that.
One of my comrades reviewed Havoc. He kind of liked it but not overly enthusiastic. Another reviewer tried to watch it but shut it off.

Accountant 2 is watchable. It’s just doesn’t really do anything to rise above average.

Sinners looked like another piece of hollywood slop where Black people good / white people are evil with some added paranormal shit thrown in. Accountant 2 looks sick, I enjoyed the first one
Yeah, Sinners does some “white devil” stuff. It wasn’t as overt as expected, but it is there.
It would have been more bold if the director made the vampires black, too, and made the film a commentary on black-on-black violence.
In the end, even the vampire villain was a victim of whites.
I guess there was a mid-credits scene, but I was out the door before that. I was actually looking at my watch in the second half. The movie was overly long. Too much setup and not enough vampire set-pieces.
The musical addition was neat but not enough to give the film that much of a boost as entertainment.
Oh boy lol – yeah ill trust my gut and pass on it. That would have been very bold to set the film up as social commentary on black on black violence but the studio would never allow it.

Up early this morning. The Teacher has a medical appointment this morning at we have to leave a little after seven. It will take a couple of hours then I will need to pick her up so it doesn’t seem worth it to drive 30m there, 30 min back and then an hour later repeat the process.
So I will take my kindle, read, play Words With Friends, and maybe walk around the Super Walmart nearby. Back here hopefully around noonish.

Good morning all, and SKOL! Draft is done, and the UDFA’s have been signed. I think we have 88 players on roster now, so we have a couple spots left to bring in players. The team looks sound. We have a long way to go to September, and we’ll see how the final 53 shapes out over the coming months. I’m pleased with where we are at today though.
