Random Thoughts

We have a balmy week ahead here in North Dakota, around six inches of snow expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. Perfect for me, I get to fly out to North Carolina on Wednesday morning. Hopefully all the snow here will be melted by the time I get back on Saturday. I’m done with winter, I’m ready to get out in the boat & do some open water fishing.

Vikings Discussion

I’ve been hearing buzz about the Vikings pursuing Asante Samuel Jr. in a few weeks. They’re doing all they can to build a mega-deep roster in every area, I really love what they’re doing. Secondary is a position group where you tend to see a lot of injuries that can derail a defense. O-line is another position group where an injury can wreck a season for an offense, and they’re building nice depth there, too. One area where they DO need to find some depth is QB, and they haven’t started there yet, but I think they plan to do so. Hopefully soon. I really expect 2025 to be a very fun year for Vikings fans, I cannot wait for this year to begin.

Vikings News

Sports Illustrated links the Vikings to Asante Samuel Jr., allegedly in 5 weeks.

From Newsbreak, Jonathan Allen shares more about his decision to leave Washington and bring his game to Minnesota. I’m excited to see that dude on the field.

Vikings.com provides updates on the proposed changes at the 2025 NFL owner’s meeting.

NFL News

ESPN reports that an Aiyuk trade is unlikely barring late changes.

Bolavip is reporting that Aaron Rodgers has promised the Steelers that he’ll sign with them.

Over at CBS Sports, they’re predicting that Aaron Rodgers will retire rather than sign with the Steelers.

I love this Midwest Safety channel, here’s a good one kiddo and I watched yesterday. Enjoy!

For all our “prior service” members here. Great news!

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a memo today ordering men and women to meet the same physical fitness requirements if they want to work in combat positions, while saying the Pentagon had “allowed standards to slip.”

Finally, common sense prevails.

Combat positions great. But don’t you think there should be some minimal standard that all service people should have to meet regardless of MOS.
Nobody thinks much of a slob looking soldier.

Yes, and so does Hegseth. He ordered a review of military fitness and grooming standards earlier this month. He has vowed to bring back tougher standards while rescinding ”woke” policies that don’t align with warrior ethos, rebuilding a stronger military and reestablishing deterrence.

PT tests are standard across the Army, Male and female standards. That doesn’t mean those standards are enforced equally by different types of units. Each type is tough on somethings lax on others.

I heard that in the Air Farce that they had to be careful not to try too hard on their test because an elevated heart rate could be grounds for failure.

Not sure about the Navy, probably has to be performed in their knees in front of the grader to get the best score.

It’s been almost 20 years since I left the Air Force. Back in my early days, all the physical requirements (sit ups, push ups, mile and a half run) were far different for women than men. In 1992, the Air Force eliminated the 1.5-mile run and began assessing physical fitness using a submaximal cycle ergometry test (SCET) using a stationary bike. A submaximal test relies on a regression equation based on steady state heart rate, workload, and some additional factors to estimate V02max.

There are some potential disadvantages with submaximal tests such as the Air Force’s SCET. Any factors that influence heart rate will affect the prediction of V02max. Studies indicated that anxiety, stress, and substances such as caffeine and nicotine affect submaximal test results by altering heart rate. Because caffeine and anxiety increase heart rate, a submaximal test tends to underestimate V02max.

Anyway, the issues with the heart rate and VO2max testing on the ergo-cycle, caused some people with really good cardiovascular systems (like mine) to fail the test because I could not get my heart rate up to the target rate fast enough. Thus I failed the test, even though I could run a mile and a half in about 8 and a half minutes pretty easily. In 2004 after a dozen years of problems, the Air Force scrapped this “scientifically advanced” method of determining an Airman’s fitness.

Thanks for confirming what I said.
Even if you had to use lots of exotic words.

So what does there PT test look like now? Back to push-ups, sit-ups and run?

Im glad. Owners have their heads so far up their ass they cant even sell the team right. Everyone should boycott them until no Pohald has any connection to the team and Rocco is sent to go pick Bananas somewhere. The players have no fire and dont care, manager doesnt care, ownership doesnt care, why should the fans?

Right now the Vikings have 2 QB’s on the roster. McCarthy and Rypien. For training camp, teams have a minimum of 3 QB’s on the roster, and 4 is not unusual. I honestly don’t see the Vikings drafting a QB this year, so maybe we’ll see an undrafted rookie come in as a “camp arm”. That said, I would not be comfortable going into the season with just two QB’s on the roster.

I have no idea what KAM is doing for the position, which is likely by design.

I am fine with what they are doing.
They will probably have 4 QBs on the team including 1 practice squad guy.

July/August is when I see them adding 1 or 2.

One of my friend’s quotes is “don’t let the old man in”. Well, he got me. On Saturday, started out walking the dogs, I went to swing over the 4 wire fence like I’ve done 1000 times…I have a couple of pallets set on each side of the fence so I just have to raise my legs hip high to clear the top wire. My shoe caught the wire (which it has before), but this time something went wrong, I was committed, and landed awkwardly on the far side of the fence, hit the left side of my chest on the pallets. Ouch. Dogs licked my face and ran off with my toque. I got up slowly, ow ow ow. Took the dogs for a 1 1/2 mile walk, pain just kept getting worse, I realized my wife would instantly notice something was wrong so immediately fessed up when I got back to house. Called my department and asked K to set up for some rib x-rays (my first ever radiology studies with the exception of dental xrays). On the drive in I started thinking I was having trouble filling my left lung uh oh pneumothorax. X-rays showed my lung was fine, mildly displaced fractures of the back of rib 5 and 6 and non displaced fx anteriorly of 4, 5, and 6.

I remember NVF has recounted breaking ribs in the line of duty. Wish I had a similarly macho story for mine.

Not much you can do about them except whine and make sure and cough from time to time despite the pain so as not to get puh nome eee ahh.

Looks like awhile to recover, condolences.

While stationed in Korea I separated a rib in my chest.
It was quite the adventure while recovering. I had to roll over and drop my legs over the edge of the bed to be able to push myself up to standing. Had to wrap my arms around my chest and hold tight to cough or heaven forbid to sneeze.

Look forward to hearing about you recovery adventures.

Hey MT, hope you feel better soon. I can relate with your fall, and your injuries. People don’t even realize they have ribs, till they break or bruise them. Coughing, and of course sneezing is mind boggling painful.

Don’t think I agree with this.

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah needs to do whatever it takes to find a way to acquire more picks, whether it be before or during the draft. If they only walk out of this draft with four players, that will be a big time fail’.

If we get 4 quality players + UDFAs I think we will be fine. More is better but if they trade back and lose out on ‘special talents’ to get decent players Quantity will not beat out Quality. IMHO of course.

I think KAM got too cute with the trades in his first draft.
He has done better lately but that is a low bar.
Compile your board, get the players that you think will help you the most.
Small trades are fine to get someone you think is special.
Making trades just to get more picks/players does not guarantee success.

I sort of felt like KAM was trying to show he had the smarts and the savvy to “move around” the draft board, and make deals in that first draft. He made deals for sure, but they weren’t good deals.

He believed Cine was about as good as Hamilton, wrongly of course. Was that on the scouts??
The Trade was crap regardless of the players involved. The players just made it exponentially worse.

I’ll cut him some slack on the first two drafts. He was knew to the position (2-3 months in), was working with Slick Ricks scouts, which we know how well Rick did with those same scouts.

His 2nd draft was with his scouts, but they were sort of new to the team and we were switching defensive styles, if you can call Donatell’s defensive a defensive style.

I think he did good last year, maybe gave up too much for Dallas Turner, but I think he is going to be a stud. This year he is limited in picks, but the team roster is looking really good.

Lots of mistakes that first draft, some due to the situation and some self inflicted.

In the last draft we traded for that 2nd 1st round pick in case we needed it to get JJ (QB) or possibly to trade up for Daniels. By the time we got JJ (QB) that 2nd pick was a sunk cost. I would have preferred DeJean but they moved up for Turner. I can see the logic if they believe he will be ‘all that’.

i agree to you about getting quality over quantity.

but if we can drop 6-8 spots and get a couple more picks that can be solid actual depth pieces, i’m all for that.

I don’t see anyone we draft being a day one starter, that would have to be very special to beat out any of our starters. Maybe a guard, but that would probably be the only position.

I would like to see KAM pick the best player available at all 4 of our picks. Doesn’t matter the position, just get the best player, and let them sit behind whichever starter they will be sitting behind and let them learn.

i am very ok with everything in this article and i agree with both KOC and KAM.

Just because they had discussions with Rodgers, doesn’t mean they think JJ isn’t ready.
They were doing their due diligence and as a Vikings fan, I would hope they ALWAYS do their due diligence.

AND, if JJ gets hurt and Rodgers is available, as annoying as he is, i would be ok with Rodgers coming here, and i do actually think that would give us the best chance to win, over players like Flacco and whoever else is still available.

That’s my two cents and i’m sticking to it.

The Teacher got up this morning a couple of hours early for her.
So I asked ‘who are you and what did you do with my wife?’.
She replied that she was ‘her evil twin’.
I said ‘oh, not much different then’.
She started laughing and said ‘did you just call me evil?’
While I started laughing I replied “no you did, you said you were the ‘evil twin’ I was just agreeing with you”.
We tried to continue the argument but we were both laughing too hard.

Not a bad way to to start a Monday Morning.

Weather around here can be interesting. On Saturday, on our way home from vacation, we dropped our daughter off in Beloit which is on the WI/IL border. It was partly sunny and a balmy 70 degrees. We drove about 15 to 20 miles north and the temperature dropped 15 degrees. There obviously was some sort of weather front that we crossed. By time we got to Madison, the temps had plummeted 30 degrees so it was cloudy and 40. What a brutal reminder of our great weather after spending 5 days on a Bahama cruise where it was upper 70s to maybe low 80s.

Someone on Facebook said that schools are not indoctrinating the kids, they are simply teaching something that the student wouldn’t learn at home. I replied with “then we should have a religious leader of all denominations come into the school for a required class and teach the non-religious kids something they would not learn at home. All they could come back with was separation of church and state blah blah blah.
