Happy Hump Day, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion. Everyday you can join us for Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings talk, NFL news and updates, and all of those other things that you have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation. As always, remember to be cool to one another.

Man, November is here. I’m not ready for winter, not even close, but here we are anyway. We were supposed to get below zero here the other night, I’m not sure if we made it or not, but it was not warm. I had to drive to Mott (about 100 miles from here) in really crappy conditions. Such joy! I made it. Alive.

Minnesota Vikings Discussion Topic of the Day

What do you think of the Ezra Cleveland trade? Should the Vikings have traded him? Did they get enough for him?

My initial thought is that a backup offensive lineman is valuable, as the Vikings have learned over the years. One never knows when a starter will go down, and I would think it would be nice to have a guy like Cleveland on the bench in case someone gets hurt. I dunno, I think I’d have lived without the sixth-round pick & kept the depth, but I could be covinced otherwise.

Minnesota Vikings News:

NFL.com gives more detail on the Vikings trade for QB Josh Dobbs.

NFL.com ranks the biggest winners and losers from the flurry of activity up to the NFL trade deadline.

The Vikings were interested in Jacoby Brisset but the asking price was too high, according to SI.com.

NBC Sports provides details on the trade that sent Ezra Cleveland from Minnesota to Jacksonville.

CBS Sports puts a grade every trade made near yesterday’s NFL trade deadline.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Yeah, I was posting it more for the top part that they’re not sure about him yet. I want them in mediocre land for the next 20 years. Not drafting another QB high and turning it around. I don’t even want them to be bad, just mediocre. About 6-7 wins per year would be about right.

I think they handled this situation just fine. Would have rather they signed Wentz but that wasn’t happening..So glad they didn’t go with McCoy, they have brought in a bona fide QB that may be able to keep us competitive if Hall isn’t up to the job.

I have no complaints.

Me too on the competitiveness issue, agree the playoffs are probably less than 20% chance now, this weekend will tell us something, but if Hall sucks we will have to wait another week to see if we have anything in Dobbs before we declare the season over.

At least the Falcons have been pretty bad so hopefully Hall is at least serviceable and shows growth throughout the game if he doesn’t just ball. I’ll take an ugly victory this weekend if the defense keeps playing good and Hall shows some hope.

I hope they do this – let Hall be a QB and don’t try to turn him into Trent Dilfer lite. We couldn’t run the ball with Kirk in there, won’t matter with Hall either.
We are a passing team – let him pass the ball. If we fail, we fail. But let’s do so doing what we do best.

The unknown is always exciting! Looking forward to see what this team cooks up offensively. Atlanta’s secondary looks beatable but I think we’re going to be implementing our RBs ALOT more, and taking occasional deep shots that get schemed open. A 16 to 13 kinda game is probably whats on the menu.

It’s still perplexing, they aren’t a player away from making the playoffs, not even close, so there’s no point in essentially trading down two rounds to rent a guy for half a season. I hope he makes a play to win a game and knock them out of the top 3 in the draft and then leaves.

Al Davis, while complicated, was a pretty good football guy. Was first owner to hire a black man as head coach – Art Shell. Also the first to hire a Latino as coach – Tom Flores. Known for loving speed, the deep ball and Heisman Trophy winners. Also was commissioner of the AFL before the merger. Rubbed a lot of people the wrong way – mainly Pete Rozelle. Many people hated Al Davis. I loved the guy.

I typically avoid personal “hawt taeks” but every once in awhile I’ll drop one for fun, just to see what happens. After a few days of thought and “connecting dots” that probably don’t connect, here’s where I’m at:

Vikings may not be done at the QB situation for this season. They’re going to play things out over the next few weeks to see where the team is at sans-Kirk and what their playoff position is as they near their bye week.

Scenario A: Hall and/or Dobbs can’t do enough to overcome the loss of Kirk, and the team is out of playoff contention heading toward their week 13 bye. In that case, the Vikings finish off the year with Hall and/or Dobbs, not tanking, per se, but playing for the 2024 draft.

Scenario B: Hall and/or Dobbs step in, step up and the team remains competitive and a likely playoff team/contender. Stay the course and see what happens.

Scenario C: Hall and/or Dobbs keep the team competitive with the Vikings still in the mix for a playoff spot, but it’s clear they likely won’t contend beyond the wildcard round. Enter

wait for it
Tom Brady for the final 5 games of the season after the bye. This possibility has already been discussed by both sides and Brady begins preparing himself now for this potential outcome. With only 5 games left in the season, plus playoffs, he only has to survive 9 games, at most (if/when the Vikings hoist the Lombardi). Yes, he’s reiterated as recently as the last week or two (but prior to Kirk’s injury) that he’s definitely retired. But the opportunity to play with this offense and a staff he knows well (in KOC and Brian Flores), as well as a chance to help his mom’s “home state” team go on a deep playoff run is just too tempting to pass up. From the Vikings side, they have nothing to lose and get Tom Brady for, at worst (best), 9 game checks.
SKOL!

Now that I said it, it won’t happen. But I thought it was interesting that on Monday, KOC joked with the media that he had some crazy ideas that were texted to him after Kirk went down. Then, on Tuesday after they announced signing Dobbs, one of the media folks asked whether he could now share some of the ideas he got and he emphatically responded, “no”.

I realize that’s a stretch to connect that simple comment with my hawt taek but I had the impression when he said it that there may be another scenario(s) still in play that he’s not going to divulge at this point.

I’m mean…I know a 2nd “unretirement” by Brady would get hammered on social media but, if he would consider doing it, is there a better situation out there to justify it? A good O-line (finally), a great receiving/TE core, a playoff team with 2 coaches he has known for years, the Minnesota-Mom connection and a chance to be the savior of their 2023 season? I think he could easily sell it. Plus, we’d be literally talking about 3 months of his life, if the Vikings are playing in February, and then he’d be done (for good?).

It’s a long shot but it’d be a hell of a story and the opportunity to build on his already unprecedented legacy:

  • Tom Brady the multiple SB winning Patriot = GOAT
  • Tom Brady the SB winning Buccaneer = GOATer
  • Tom Brady the SB winning (or almost) Viking = GOATest

Dammit…this needs to happen.

No doctor has ever said it, but I don’t rule it out.

I’m not a 49ers fan, but like having them around to beat the Cowboys. They also do things that seem to run counter to existing thinking.
They regularly screw up the QB position, and it doesn’t seem to matter.
Few years back, went and got Jimmy G and went to SB (paid him almost as much as Kirk). Then dumped him, spent a boat load of picks for Lance. He got hurt, brought Jimmy back, and went to NFC Championship. Jimmy hurt again, Lance sucks, go to a 7th rounder and go to Championship again.
It’s like they can spend money, draft picks and all of that can fail- and they still get to SB or Championship Game.
They seem to always make it work.
Kind of strange to me. All of this you’ve got to get the QB right – they seem to screw it up all the time and still make it work

On February 8, 2018, the 49ers and Garoppolo agreed to terms on a 5-year contract worth a maximum of $137.5 million. At the time of its signing, it was the largest contract in NFL history on an annual basis, surpassing that of Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. 36 and coming off the Achilles – even with a clean bill of health there’s concern he could injure it again.

I think 20m per with incentives to push it to 25m – but that’s a shade tree GM’s take on it. Could very well draw more from a QB desperate team, of which there are many.

Could be. In which case I think I’d rather they just draft QBOTF and use the savings to address other needs – mainly interior DL/OL. Even if Minny gets into the playoffs and ends with a less than desirable draft position they will still have enough to make a move (they’ll have to use future picks in a package deal to do it in that case, but the ammo to move up in ‘24 is there)

Probably not, but he’s not going to have any offers early other than the Vikings. To me, signing a deal early that offers the ability to be paid like a starter with incentives, even for a smaller guaranteed salary makes sense. By the time he’s healthy, teams will have their QB figured out and won’t be looking to pay somebody big money. Plus, for a non-Vikings team he would have to learn a whole new offense pretty quickly. Finally, it is not guaranteed the recovery will go smooth. Hiccups and set backs happen. What if you get to June and tweak something or get an Alex Smith type setback. Now, you get nothing and end up sitting out 2024 and probably retiring.

bowbunch

The Vikings have the ability now to put incentives in his contract and keep from being insulting. They try and do it with a healthy Kirk, especially if he kept playing the way he was, no chance. Now, they can frame it as, look we believe in you, that’s why we’ve built it so you can make good starting QB money, but there needs to be some protection for the team should your recovery not go well.

DE Viking

He needs to realize he is getting older and coming off a catastrophic injury with little history of recovery at his age. Plus, he can think whatever he wants, but I don’t see anybody signing him to anything that doesn’t have injury protections and nobody but the Vikings will consider it until June or July. Kirk can think whatever he wants right now or pre-injury, but the reality of the situation has changed. If I’m Kirk, I bet on myself, take a deal early with the Vikings so I’m guaranteed something and trust that I will return to the level I was at and if not, then I still got something out of it and didn’t end up just sitting at home for nothing.

IDK what they’ll do, they’ll need to decide before free agency in March. I would be hesitant to re-sign him only like 5 months into a 12 month recovery at age 36. Too much unknown at that point in time to use a bunch of cap space on a guy who might not even play until several games into the season.

They should have a pretty good idea how he’s progressing at least and that’s how you spin the per game bonuses to Kirk. Hopefully he’s reasonable and realizes there is no guarantee when he is fully healthy. Depending on how the incentives are structured, you could use them to push some of the cap hit to 2025 as well to leave cap room for JJ/Hunter/whoever in 2024 as well without having to add void years.

It’ll drag out into July so this conversation never ends. No other team is going to sign him until he is fully healthy. The only way he gets a contract before training camp is with the Vikings. With that being said, if I was Kirk I would work pretty hard to get a contract with the Vikings as soon as possible. Give me active roster and starting bonuses with some performance bonuses for yards, TDs, etc that can get up to around 40mill/ year and let’s roll. Throw in playoff bonuses too.

From the Vikings side, I would offer something like what I said but make it heavier on 2024 so you could have him under contract in 2025 as a potential backup or a tradeable asset if the rookie you draft is ready to go.

Question for the comp pick experts here, do we get a comp pick for cousins if he signs with another team during next season, or does he have to be signed by a certain date?

Also, someone said that we would not get a comp pick for Hunter if we let him walk at the end of the season, why would this be?

We should get a comp pick if Hunter leaves via free agency.
But maybe the no tag clause eliminates that comp pick.

I don’t think a void year matters anymore.

Prior to 2020, void years counted. But starting in 2020, they do not. From the CBA, emphasis mine: No [Unrestricted Free Agent] shall qualify as a [Compensatory Free Agent] unless and until the maximum possible term of the player’s contract has expired, and all other requirements have been satisfied.

I haven’t heard from the Subaru shop since I gave them the O.K. to fix my Legacy, despite leaving messages.

I believe the Subaru is dead, may it rest in peace.

With a kid in college I was not planning on buying a new car right now, but fate apparently has other plans.

Looking at a Toyota RAV4….Anyone have any positives or negatives on that?

Camry, I owned one for years, loved it…it got a few dents in it and some rust towards the end so I sold it at 130,000 miles for a case of whiskey to co-worker for her kid…the kid drove it into a pond within 3 months.

I bought a 2000 Camry in 2018 for $1800 – had 225,000 miles on it.

Donated it to my high school auto shop last year with almost 385,000 miles on it.

Lots of trips to Minny, Colorado, Texas and Arkansas over the years.

Had to replace plugs and put in a rebuilt starter about a year after I bought it, otherwise routine maintenance.

I’ve been driving my wife’s Lexus RX (basically a high end Highlander) to work since I parked the Ranger for the winter. On Thursday I get the winter tires put on the ol’ F-150 then the RX will get parked as my wife loves the Vulva XC90. I have always been surprised at how well the hybrid mice that run the hamster wheels in the RX keep that baby in the center of the lane.

Sounds like (big secret – cone of silence) the oldest granddaughter will be getting the RX as a graduation present from her parents next spring. It’s a 2012 but only has 32,000 miles on it. Should last her through college at least.

Meanwhile I am selling the Ranger to one of my BIL’s and will patiently wait for my new Bronco to be delivered in 2062.

When it comes to traveling in the snow, you need a vehicle that’s designed to handle the conditions. An all-wheel-drive SUV is certainly recommended, but not all of them handle snow very well. One vehicle stands out as a perfect choice: the Toyota RAV4

Here’s my taek after reading several takes from “experts” and otherwise:

Vikings weren’t re-signing Cleveland either wayTrue, they would have gotten a 2025 comp pick when he left for another team but it likely would have been offset by his replacement…so, they essentially would have gotten zero valueAs of last report, Cleveland was still nursing his injured ankle, so best case he’s available for 9 more games, worst case, less than that, and they’re obviously happy with Risner as his replacement (and it keeps Risner from being an expensive backup)Per KOC, IIRC, they’re happy with Brandel and Reed (soon to return to the active roster) as backup options, if needed
In summary, the trade allowed them to extract some 2024 value in a situation where they likely would have gotten no “net return” (even if they did, it wouldn’t be until 2025), and it doesn’t hurt the team in the immediate term.

SoCalMinnFan

So the guy coming off IR is a better injury risk than the one who just missed two games for the rest of the season? If his injury was bad he wouldn’t have passed the Jags physical.

So if they are ‘happy with Brandel and Reed’ and Risner already on the roster what ‘replacement’ is needed to be brought in? Resigning Risner won’t effect Comp picks.

A 6th rounder in 2024 = a 5th round comp pick in 2025.

Sending out a starter lvl guard in today NFL for peanuts is silly.
Jags cut their season opening LG as soon as the trade was made so they know Cleveland is an upgrade.

More to the story i.e. refusing to sing Kumbaya because he lost his starting spot seems more likely.

I think they traded Ezra because they know he is no longer a starter and he wants to be a starting tackle. There is no reason to keep a disgruntle player just to add depth to the bench. Also, there may be more to his injury and that is why we got less than what everyone thinks he is worth.

You are right. I can see how you read the plot summary that way. I changed the wording a bit to clarify things:

A teenage girl’s mom is murdered by the Sweet 16 Killer, who returns after a 35-year hiatus from stabbing. Said teenage girl then travels back in time to 1987 and teams up with the high-school version of her mom to stop the killer in the past.
