Happy Fourth, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics! Join us for Minnesota Vikings talk, Vikings news, news from around the NFL, and virtually any other topic. On this site, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, you should join us! This is the daily back page, which is wide open. Therefore, you will see discussion of nearly ANY topic here. Our one rule here is: “Remember, be cool to one another”. Also, a word to the wise, don’t feed the trolls. SKOL!!!!!!

I’m guessing a lot of folks are off today, but I’m guessing there are also a lot of folks working today (poor son of a guns). I’m in the former category, as I took a vacation day. We’re out camping by the Missouri until the 4th. Kiddo and I are running a 5k in Mandan that morning, then we’ll stick around for the parade (that’s kiddo’s deal, not mine) afterwards. This will be the fifth 5k that we’ve run together, it’ll be a blast.

It’s been a nice weekend, a hot day yesterday well into the 90s, but cooling today. We’re going to take the kayaks out this morning & do some fishing while we travel down the river a few miles to where some friends are camping. Tomorrow night, we’re taking our fireworks out to my brother’s place so we can go bonkers. We spend more every year. Oh well, I spent a lot more on a lot dumber things when I was younger. Explosives are good family fun, in my opinion.

Minnesota Vikings News:

From SI.com, Pat McAfee tried to clear the air with SOME Vikings fans. Sheesh, a bit hypersensitive to be bothered by an innocent statement.

Training camp report dates for veterans and rookies were announced, from Vikings.com. We’re really reaching for things to report, aren’t we? I wonder if they’ll announce potty break times for each of the position groups.

Here’s a head coach ranking for all 32 NFL teams from CBS Sports. There’s a lot to argue about in this one.

I think we have a meterologist or something like it in the audience. Maybe you can weigh in on whether this is correct. The Chargers’ Kellen Moore, when talking about their tall wide recievers, says they’ll be throwing in a different jet stream, according to NFL.com. I’m no Art major, but I’m pretty sure there’s only one jet stream.

From Sky.com, a mayor in Mexico has married an allligator-like reptile who he calls ‘princess girl’. Wow.

Victor Hugo Sosa says during the wedding ceremony: “I accept responsibility because we love each other. That is what is important. You can’t have a marriage without love… I yield to marriage with the princess girl.”

Video of the Day:

These two have some funny moments, this is Theo Von and Joe Rogan. Enjoy!

3 weeks and 3 days till training camp starts (Saturday 29 July). Hope the time passes quickly. There are currently about 25 free agent RB’s on the market, including Cook. Will he even have a job this year?

Vikings Rival Positioned to Rekindle Interest in Kirk Cousins, Insider Says

Entering the final year of his contract, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins made his intentions known that he won’t engage in any more contract talks until next March, potentially opening a window to take calls from other teams during the legal tampering period of free agency.
Unless the Vikings make him an offer he can’t refuse until then, Cousins’ phone line will be open to other suitors, sparking the perennial rumor of Cousins joining the San Francisco 49ers.
The Athletic’s 49ers beat reporter Matt Barrows addressed the potential that Cousins could be the 49ers’ plan in 2024.
“Yes, Shanahan loves Cousins. He has championed Cousins, now 34, since he was Washington’s offensive coordinator in 2012, the year Washington chose the quarterback in the fourth round. But he suspects he now has a younger, cheaper and more mobile version of Cousins in [Brock] Purdy, who is 11 years younger,”

And of course KAM won’t get an ounce of compensation and will let a top 10 QB go. fool.

Enjoy whatever freedom we have left.
You can’t even have free speech anymore.

Today we celebrate an insurrection.

No. Not the fake Jan. 6, 2021, “insurrection.” I’m talking about the bonafide insurrection staged by American colonists against the British government. We call July 4 “Independence Day.” But the British called it an act of rebellion. Encyclopedia Britannica defines insurrection as “an organized and usually violent act of revolt or rebellion against an established government or governing authority of a nation-state or other political entity by a group of its citizens or subjects.”The idea of insurrection offends modern sensibilities, and it is certainly an extreme last resort.

But it’s not always unjustified.

Today, Americans tend to be passive when it comes to resisting government. When we get mad, we protest. When we get really mad, we try to vote the bums out (and usually end up with more bums) or sue in federal court (basically asking the government to fix the government). But this certainly wasn’t the mindset of the founding generation. Americans in that day believed tyranny should be resisted. I’m pretty sure the likes of Samuel Adams and Thomas Jefferson would have been labeled “anti-government extremists” and de-platformed by social media had it existed in 1776.

AOC does seem quite flexible in her positions. She’s now concerned about an authoritarian government with to much central power. Yet, not to far back, she thought same government should take over elections and voting from the states. And even on student loans, the court said our supreme leader didn’t have the legal power to forgive. Congress had the power to write the law to do this, but she doesn’t seem to want any part of it.
Maybe she is just young and still trying to figure things out.

It is just flawed logic.
You look at the result you want, build some arguments to support it, and then call it Logic.
No other arguments, past/present/future effect the current one. Although if you can find an old one that can be twisted out of context to support the current one all the better.
Most if not all politicians do this.

Like any good sales person they make it sound convincing.
Conservative or Liberal we want what they are selling so it is easy to get people to ‘buy in’.
They make a few efforts to fulfill their ‘Promises’ but mostly they are working for themselves, on the publics dime of course.

Well then maybe it’s time for term limits.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  JRobert
4 July 2023 8:45 am

Since the early 1990s, the long-running demand to impose term limits on the Senators and Representatives elected to the U.S. Congress has intensified. Considering that since 1951 the President of the United States has been limited to two terms, term limits for members of Congress seem reasonable. There’s just one thing in the way: the U.S. Constitution.

There is an organized movement for term limits though. Established in the early 1990s, the Washington, D.C. based U.S. Term Limits (USTL) organization has advocated for term limits at all levels of government. In 2016, USTL launched its Term Limits Convention, a project to amend the Constitution to require congressional term limits. Under the Term Limits Convention program, the state legislatures are encouraged to enact term limits for the members of Congress elected to represent their states.

The goal of the USTL is to get the 34 states required by Article V of the Constitution to demand a convention to consider amending the Constitution to require term limits for Congress. Recently, USTL reported that 17 of the needed 34 states had passed resolutions calling for an Article V constitutional convention. If adopted by a constitutional convention, the term limits amendment would have to be ratified by 38 states.

You can read all about the movement here: https://www.termlimits.com/

Cool, I can imagine how the fall gets players blood going. I played football starting in September in High School and College, and even at 70 years old when the fall rolls around my football “stirrings” rise up.

I hope the Vikings are competitive this year and there’s no Sophomore slump for KOC. The team was not statistically better on either side of the ball under him in his first year, yet they won 13 games and clinched the NFC North. One hopes the team would be better this year as the HC gets his feet under him, and his scheme matures with the players. Will they explode on offense (finally) or will the prevent offense still reign to protect the defense?

Yea, he seemed really enthusiastic about getting going. Was in terrific shape too.
I loved fall too. By mid August baseball was getting old and ready to move on to football. Nothing like football in the fall.
This team may not win as many games next season, but could be a much improved team overall. I’m not for Zim ball, but would like to see us run the ball more consistently. Just about anything should produce a better defense.

Well honestly, there is no such thing as a QB in the NFL that doesn’t need a good team around him to win. The fact that the Vikings won 13 games last year with the 28th ranked defense in points allowed is pretty incredible. Especially when you add in a terrible interior line. So it’s not that Cousins needs a great team around him. Decent would be a massive improvement.

Since the original came out in the spring of ’88 half the commenters on here weren’t even born so maybe had never heard of that song.

Like so many songs from our youth, I can remember with crystal clarity when I first heard that song…was driving a flatbed pickup from little ol’ Wainwright to Vancouver (actually Chilliwack) to load up some specialized pipe fittings for the natural gas company I was working for…had just found out that I had been admitted to the medical laboratory science program at the U of A, lateral from the dead end premed…felt like the world was my oyster…stopped in Vernon on a whim to look up my fourth grade teacher…sat out on his deck and lounged in his pool sipping on a beer or two and reminiscing…his three daughters come home from some folksy event and spent a delightful rest of the afternoon and supper with them, after supper his oldest (about a year and a half younger than I) asked if I wanted to go for a drive in their little convertible and see the sights around the Okanagan valley. I had recently broken up with my GF and thought the fates were nudging us together, we were holding hands and laughing about some shit looking out over the city when this song came on.

She had just got back from a year as an exchange student in Brazil (did you know they speak Portuguese?) and was going to work the summer in Banff. I detoured on the way back to see her, brought her flowers but the spark just never ignited, too many miles between us.

Songs and smells, they are hardwired into the amygdala.

Once I set up behind the ball, the only thing I’m focused on is swinging the club from the inside and bottoming the club out in front of the ball. Before I set up, I’m swinging the club loosely to get myself relaxed, and visualizing hitting the ball to a specific target. I say “Alabama” during my swing to keep myself in rhythm. I do this on every shot, including chips. pitches, and putts. You’ll be amazed how well you putt if you say Alabama to yourself when doing it.

That looks very good and especially so for tempo.
Actually I try to stay in the present and only think about the shot. These guys mentioned starting on 17 and just needing two bogeys. All I’d be thinking of was the drive on 17
And perhaps strangely, my only swing thought once addressing the ball is be aggressive thru the hitting area.

yes, it’s focus on the next shot, stay in your routine, pick your target line, address the ball, one last look at your target, swing.

From doing that my shot quality was excellent. When your putting sucks its hard to make par.

Sticking to your routine is great, But an add, if you were timed in your routine, it should take the same mnount of time every time. From pulling the club, to shot leaving the club should be within a second or two Comfort comes from believing in your routine.
Bad pitches and putts are many times caused by deaccelerating into the ball.

Exactly that to a tee. The routine helps your mind stay comfortable with what it is use to and you tend to execute without doubt or stress. It has been a big help.

Why i couldn’t do that on the green was odd Sat, just never felt comfortable. i believe i wasn’t picking a target and staying focused on that and was looking more just cup and speed and just doubted and deaccelerated or went to fast and was just not in rhythm. Playing at 6:30 in the morning i will focus heavily on my putting routine.

6:30 sucks. Glad you have a good routine and believe in it. My son went from a 2 handicap to a Plus 3 by developing a solid routine and always sticking to it. The “shot” started for him the moment he took the club from the bag and ended when the club was on his forward shoulder.
Putting in all honesty is a lot about confidence once you have a pretty good stroke. But generally I would always rather knock the ball two feet past the hole than be two foot short. Thus, I sort of eliminate half the distance error.

Yeah, my routine developed over time to overcome my two biggest issues… fatting the ball and coming over the top and pulling the ball left.

Yea my routine was developed thinking to much about making a “smooth” swing and then being slow in the hitting area.

I’m still slow in the hitting area, grin… but at least I hit the ball close to the center of the club a lot.

I wasn’t expecting it to be any good. Seemed like a last pay day for Harrison Ford and the franchise. I expect it to be so CGI’d up that it has zero feel of the previous installments.

The first installments were awesome hand built sets and amazing stunts. Now its some fucking geek on a computer with CGI software. Just give it to the machines already we’re done.

I was looking at buying the digital copies of the first 4 movies, but they were asking close to $50 for the bundle. Now that the new movie is coming out, they had a sale for $19.99 for the 4. I bought them for that price. While all of them aren’t great, they bring back great memories of my youth.

Thanks Wrenage. I will probably watch it anyway, but will wait until it comes out on a streaming platform. If I can watch it for close to free, then I can pretend I’m watching one of the Saturday afternoon SyFy movies.

Feels like a down year to me. I think as usual O’Connell & Flores will get just enough out of the teams to more of far enough down thee draft board so we miss out on the top ten talent and be completely unleveraged at the QB position. Can move up enough, Cousins has all the contract leverage. WTF is that stupid Somalian pirate even doing?

9-10 wins, maybe one playoff loss.
Enough to keep the stadium sold out. That is all they are after.

Bullshit…minimum 11 wins

  1. 2nd year for Kirk and the rest of the offense under this system which was new last year.
  2. 2 elite receivers…who is going to stop us?
  3. Got rid of Cook and his negative runs
  4. Offensive line largely intact with more time to gel.
  5. New defensive coordinator – only one way to go on defense which is up.

All things considered I expect a much better version of the Vikings this year…so even with a more difficult schedule it will be at least 11 wins.

Think we’re still in the best defense is a good offense mode. Flores will be more agressive than Dumbotell but a wet kitten would be tougher than that. I’m sure he will apply more heat, not sure we have the tools tho.

Yea, I hear you there. If the offense is putting up 30+ every week then it takes a bunch off stress off of the d.

Hoping our run game doesn’t disappear this year when they’re up 2+ scores.
