London Vikings

Merry Thursday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion! Every day you can join us for Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings talk, NFL news and updates, and all of those other things that you have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

Only a few short days until more Vikings football! It’ll be an earlier than usual start on Sunday morning, as kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 am. Let’s hope the Vikings can keep doing what they’ve been doing. I’d love to see Darnold light it up on Sunday and really put up a big game against the Jets, the team who drafted him then moved on from him.

Vikings/NFL News and Updates:

From CBS, the Vikings plan to bring T.J. Hockenson back to practice this week, another step closer in getting Hockenson back into the lineup. Hockenson is recovering from a torn ACL and MCL, an injury he suffered in the latter part of last season.

On KFAN, Jonathan Greenard said that he and many other Vikings are not happy with how the last game ended and that they are treating it like a loss, from Heavy.com. I like it.

Over at Vikings.com,, they posted the week 5 Vikings vs. Jets injury report, also a Vikings vs. Jets game preview. Head coach Kevin O’Connell talked to the media about flying to London, Hockenson’s recovery, the Jets, and more.

Media Selection:

I found this the other night, it’s hilarious. If you want to start your day off with a laugh, this should get the job done.

Caution: There are some NSFW words in here. Nothing excessive, but there are some curse words. Enjoy!

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.
  • Twitter sized version: Be cool to one another

I grew up in Fairfax Va. Fall was always that way there too. Cool mornings, warm, but not hot days. Football weather. Walking to school, and seeing your breath for the first time in the year. Loved the fall back in those days. Still do actually.

Kirk with 500 yards, 4 TD passes, a 114.8 QBR and an overtime win in Prime Time.
Oh the humanity.

On the plus side both teams have two losses now.

It was a hell of a game. I should know better that to bet against Kirko in October.
He absolutely balled out. In my underdog gambling, I had Kirk throwing 1 INT, so won that bet. The yardage killed me for the other bets, so no win for me.

I think, as you watched the play, it was 4th and 15, and the Falcons were down a score with just over two minutes left in the game. Cousins was getting creamed as he threw the ball, and he did what everyone here would have wanted him to do in that situation. Chuck up a “hope” ball. It was the only thing he could do. 9 times out of 10 you’re going to throw an interception there, but he had to just throw it and hope for a pass interference call.

Cousins threw a TD on 3rd and 14, and on 4th and 4 during the game. Both throws in those situations were dimes in heavy coverage. Clearly if he has time, he can deliver. That interception was just one of those “is what it is” circumstances though.

If I understand it correctly, they’re going from $39/hr to
43 right away, then
47,
51,
55,
59,
63

annually over 6 years. How many people making $78k/year would like to be making $126k/year in six years? that’s an incredible amount of guaranteed raise. without any additional responsibility?

I took on extra responsibility as I went along in my white collar, college educated career and I think I crawled from $78k to $98k over a 6 year period. Paid off my student loans legit, too. Then I got laid off. Thanks, Biden.

No wonder so many people have jumped ship on their fair & traditional responsibilities. It’s very disillusioning to do all of the right things and watch others get better results.

Reminds me of when I borrowed way less money than the bank told me I could when I bought my first home in 2005. Never missed a payment. My employer sold their company, and I ended up finding work out of state and selling my house at a substantial five figure loss.

Next home I bought had been foreclosed/abandoned. Mold in the basement. Asbestos in the attic. Never missed a payment. Fixed the issues myself. Wells Fargo, holder of both of my mortgages to date, got bailed out by us taxpayers.

Now I play video games on YouTube for a living.

Until the morons on the top stop screwing the middle class, I’ve got a big middle finger for the lot of ’em.

Full Participants:

Been packing up donations all day for a “drive” that is coming around tomorrow to collect things for Helene survivors. Got about 10 contractor bags full of clothes, shoes, and other things like some pots and pans, cups, plates, silverware, etc. They want the bags out at 7 a.m. tomorrow, and clearly marked as donations, so they don’t inadvertently grab someone’s trash. We probably have 500 pounds in donations.

While doing this. she accidently scooped up the TV remote and it ended up in the bag too. She just spent the last 20 minutes rummaging through the bags to find it. She was a little hot under the collar, but she just found it, and all is well now.

Same here, except we had a roof top antenna with a motor so we could swing it around to pick up channels (we could get PBS out of Fort Dodge, IA where I developed my love of Monty Python and Dr Who). I always tell my kids I was the remote at our house, “turn it to channel 12”, so like voice command now.

We also had this in my house. Called it a ‘rotor’ had a circle dial that we painstakingly calibrated and put numbered stickers where the channels were. We got ABC out of Omaha and Sioux City, Iowa. Fox from Omaha. CBS from Lincoln and NBC from the Grand Island area. Then my dad was one of the first to get DirecTV in our area. Cost over a $1000 at the time – but it was cable in the country and an absolute game changer…..

Candice Owens is digging into Cackles family. She got interested when the left tried to cancel Janet Jackson for saying ‘I heard Kamala was Irish’ when she was asked.

She contends and says she is close to proving that her grandparents/parents were from Jamaica but that they were of Irish decent and slave holders with no black relatives.

She has already shown that the ‘grandmother’ that she was pictured with in her book died 4 years before Cackles was born so photos are obvious fakes. If this comes out Harris will have ‘some splaining to do’.

Personally I don’t care what her ancestry is but if she was scamming for votes those scammed to support her due to her being a ‘black female’ may have issues with it.

Pretty interesting SoCal. That said, I think there are millions of voters out there who will vote for Kamala because she is a woman of color. That seems to be far more important, than her radical views, and total lack of any ability to run the country. Just a lot of people only see her gender and color and don’t care about anything else.

Its fun, my advice is just do smaller 2-3 parlay bets that you are really confident on regardless of level of winnings to build up a decent sized pool and get a hang of it then start going more. You can go up to 8 picks and a $10 bid can net you $2500 depending on picks. I have yet to hit that but..its there. It makes games like tonights more interesting.

Over the weekend we replaced some floor vents for the AC/Heating. We saw lots of crud, toys, hand tools, debry and even what looked like a jar of peanuts that had been dumped into one vent.
We got a recommendation from our realtor/friend for duct cleaning. The guy came out yesterday and got video of the ducks and found mold and damp as they had not been cleaned out since the place was built 20 years ago.
Since we had been concerned that it was colder and damper here (but less dusty) here than SoCal how all that would play with The Teachers Asthma and my crud. So we had the full vacuum, decon, UV treatment to get our air system contaminate free.
Hopefully a good investment in a healthier winter for us.

I didn’t realize at first the ghosts were tampons, which is an allusion to something that happened during an HSG procedure I did earlier in the year. There are many tampon ghosts all over the place, hidden here and there. I showed the decorations to one of the maintenance guys, he’s all like gross those are tampons – heehee they aren’t used for Pete’s sake.

I go into a biopsy procedure for someone who likely has non-Hodgkin lymphoma, explain everything, go to put on my leaded glasses and a ghost spills out of the case for the glasses, I burst out with a brief laugh and then thought oops not a time for laughter – tech told the patient I was startled by a prank they played on me.

I can honestly say I have never been there. The way YouTube supplies with me dancing Asian girls, I have all the fetishes I can handle.

By the way…I think you mentioned the lack of emotion on the part of the Asian cheerleaders in that short yesterday, but I couldn’t reply because I was in the field.

I believe that lack of emotion is part of their act. It might have something to do with heckling the other team.

I found that there was a ‘range of looks’.

Korea was invaded by the mongols and you can see that influence (flat faces) and also a lot of Chinese and some Japanese influence.

I thought they were Japanese.

I looked it up. They are Korean. That’s weird. I can usually pick out Koreans.

The smartest person I have ever known was Korean. They weren’t just smart. They were sharp. It was kind of spooky. They were always multiple steps ahead of everything.

I think the differences between Chinese and Korean women are the hardest for me. Very similar in my mind.

My roommate in college was born to Korean parents (ie his parents were born in Korea), although my roommate was born in High River, Alberta.

He was a scheming mastermind. He was also fearless with the ladies which I always admired, he helped me out of my shy shell. We were close.

After graduation from PT school, he wanted me and a couple of other guys to invest in a PT clinic on the outskirts of TO in 1995. I think it would have been like a $10,000 CDN contribution to the down payment. I declined…I saw his fire and passion and it kinda made sense but with me living in the US I could only see problems with taxation.

He sold his shares in the business of pt Health in 2012 for CDN$120,000,000.00.

Lots of Koreans in health. The one I knew both of their parents were doctors and stuff. Highly successful, but also highly driven. I’m not sure they were totally happy. There was always a ton of pressure to excel in everything.

My wife took over all our financials, which is a good and bad thing.

The good is she is super OCD about numbers and likes to keep stuff growing.

The bad is that if she leaves me, I’m screwed. She has all of the passwords and account numbers.

Fortunately, it is not a vast fortune, so I can rebuild pretty easily. Heck, I can get like $20 an hour working at McDonalds!

Our household is actually the opposite. If she leaves you and my wife leaves me, we would make a good team. However, I can guarantee we would not be sharing a bed.

However, my wife is very frugal. Yesterday morning we were drawing up time off requests for Jan-June and she said she would not go to (our timeshare in) Florida in March. As we had talked about surrendering it I told her I would call and see if I could figure out how to cancel the timeshare.

Had a long discussion with this person and that at the parent company and settled on surrendering it, which entails a $1200 fee (for each of our two weeks) and a 12 week process. That makes things tight but hopefully it is done before January 1 (otherwise we are on the hook for the maintenance fees or about $2000).

She had a fit – “we’re not paying maintenance fees” and I explained that even if we do we save the cost of airline tix, doggy hotel, hotel stays in Bismarck prior to the AM flight, car rental, etc.

She said “I’m not going to get pissed” but was still annoyed at the thought of paying the maintenance fees at supper. I let her grumble for awhile and then said, now wait a minute you have told me again and again that I need to respect your decisions and you said you were not going to Florida so let’s drop it. She started to say something about well I could have been talked into it before she realized what she was saying. So that ended well.

He’s a shining example of Christian morals and has been his entire life, you can’t hold anything against him in this regard. He’s only ever supported the American worker and industry, he’s never done things to hurt the American worker or went off shore for cheaper products and labor. He’s never lied, NOT ONCE! I believe the reason you don’t hear people complaining about him, is there is no reason to. You can’t go a day without the MSM bringing something, no matter how miniscule, up that sheds a negative light on Trump.

A lot of people here bring stuff up about the Dems, simply because if we didn’t talk about it with each other, you would not hear anything about it in the news. At least, not ad nauseam.

Does Trump have his flaws? Most definitely, but should I listen to someone call me a sheep or follower because I believe, out of the 2 candidates, Trump is the best choice.

He is a faulty lab. If I get up and go to the living room he’ll want to go outside and then go back to sleep in the living room with me. He knows better than to beg for food or wake me up for food because I’ll just lock him outside. He also doesn’t swim, barely fetches and is so far so so at finding birds.

Since I love lab talk, indulge me.

Bubba, the younger (3) somehow seems to have bruised the lateral pad on his front paw while alone at home on Monday. It pains me to see him hopping along on three legs on our walks but there’s no way he’s gonna risk just Tuck and I out there to be eaten by coyotes. He’s been getting some doggy ibuprofen so this morning a little better.

Not to be undone for attention, Tuck the indiscriminate eater found a cowpie last night while I was scooping dirt out of the holes I’ve been preparing for trees. I knew he would wake me up at some point. Sure enough at 2 am my wife nudged me and said the dog is up. Ran and let him outside, waited, and then as we are making our way in the dark back to bed I stepped right in the puke pile that lay unbeknownst to me on the carpet. Awesome.

I don’t have a routine for an early morning Vikings game per se, because they’re pretty infrequent. That said, we bought some ham steaks, and my wife is going to make her famous scrambled eggs with red, green, and yellow peppers, with onions, plus she makes some seasoned breakfast potatoes that are amazing. She makes them from scratch, so it takes some time, but man, they are awesome. Throw in some English muffins with butter and strawberry preserves, and it’s a breakfast feast for the ages.

That’s our plan for Sunday.

Life tip for all you youngsters.

My father-in-law (dementia) ran a heatting/cooling business for years. He retired about 7 years back but his shop is full of aging inventory. Now its up to us to get what we can for all of this aging inventory. We found a guy who will take it off our hands but the father-in-law probably could have gotten a lot more for it if he would have aggressively sold it after he retired.

So….don’t leave it up to your kids to sell/get rid of your stuff that’s worth something….do it while you are alive and mentally able.

Some DVOA stuff in an article that came out earlier this week:

Two undefeated teams remain in the NFL after four weeks, and they are in very different places in our DVOA ratings. The Minnesota Vikings have outscored opponents by 57 points and stand on top of the table at 41.5% DVOA. This is the first time the Vikings have been at No. 1 since the end of the 2017 season. The Kansas City Chiefs have only outscored opponents by 20 points and thus rank just ninth despite their undefeated record.

Both teams get a boost from the arrival of opponent adjustments, which we install for the first time after Week 4. The Chiefs have played the third-toughest schedule so far based on the average DVOA of their four opponents. The Vikings’ schedule ranks eighth.

Other teams that have played particularly tough schedules so far include the Eagles, the Falcons, the Patriots, and the Broncos. Teams that have played particularly easy schedules include the Browns, the Titans, the Jaguars, the Bills, and the Seahawks.

The Vikings are driven by their defense, which has a DVOA that is almost double that of the second-best defense, New Orleans.

Interesting to see how gung-ho the metric is on the Vikings already when they were so hesitant to accept the success of the 2017 Vikings. And it never believed in the 2022 Vikings. Going 11-0 in one-score games is unsustainable!

You’re welcome.

Farming isn’t for me either. It’s duty.

Yesterday, we were two hours from getting beans done and had a major bean head breakdown. We had to pack everything up, drive an hour home and start trying to fix it. Basically, a shaft inside the header auger slipped out of its mount, and the retractable fingers in the auger weren’t retracting and jammed it all up.

You had to try to fix it through little access ports you had to stuff your arm in up to the shoulder. I honestly don’t know how we got it fix. Prayer probably. It was like building a ship in a bottle, expect all the ship parts were heavy hunks of steel and bolted together, so you had to try to get wrenches on them inside the bottle. Then it turned out two of the nuts were welded on, so we had to get a cutting torch in there, as well.

But, miracle of miracles, we got it going again.

Minnesota is currently ranked NUMBER ONE in D.V.O.A. (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) – a metric that attempts to measure efficiency on a play-by-play basis (and therefore, sustainable methods). Vikings have the top defense, and above-average offense and special teams.

Baltimore has the top offense and is #2 overall. At 2-2, DVOA puts them above all 3-1 teams.

KC, at 4-0, is ranked #9 overall.

I am seeing the best Vikings team on the field, in a long, long, time. We have a defense that is for real. We have a good running game, and a good passing game. We even have a good kicker. This team can get to the Super Bowl this year.

Can’t say I understand this DVOA. But if Saints are three and Steelers are eight I’ve got to wonder about the stat.

peterplaysbass

in a nutshell, it’s basically looking at how many yards the offense gets per play, but every yard is qualified by context (down and distance, game context, etc). 4 yards on 3rd and 3 is worth a lot more than 4 yards on 3rd and 15, for example. Take into account the score and the gameclock and the opponent, and you can get a score that measures “success” on every play.

Thank you.
I just have a hard time thinking an offense like the Steelers is good at anything.
I can appreciate some of these ‘newer’ stats trying to better quantify performance but wonder if some don’t over think it sometimes – e.g.,QBR.
But thanks again.

Yeah, I find it fun to look around at the various stats available to see how they measure up against what my gut is telling me. Over the years I have found DVOA to align most closely with what I feel.

PIT’s offense is ranked 17th, by the way. They have the 7th best defense and the 7th best special teams, which helps their overall ranking.

Back when FootballOutsiders still existed, I had access to breakdowns between run and pass, as well as other breakdowns. The website was purchased by a company that failed though, and the owner of the DVOA methodology was hired by someone else, and many of the details are behind a paywall.

They have built historical averages for all these various situations based on data collected over the years (and continue to collect). They can use this data to compare offensive production against the current season, or the last five years, or since they began measuring DVOA. It can’t measure the quality of the opponents though, so it’s not a perfect measure (nothing with so many variables ever is). Weather, playing outdoors versus indoors, injuries to either team, etc can affect DVOA. To me it’s an indicator, but it doesn’t mean as much as the media makes of it.

Still wonder about guys doing the scoring. Been looking some at QBR – suppose to be a complete stat.
Last year saw Greg Cosell break down the same play by two QB’s – Cousins and Dobbs – with two very different scores.
Dobbs playing the Saints was on the 6 going in. He drops back, gets outside pressure, steps up, is uncomfortable in the pocket, does a neat spinout and scramble for a TD. Gets a high score.
Same play year before. Cousins gets pressure, steps up, but is comfortable there and waits a bit, then a receiver clears and he throws a TD. Gets a lower grade than Dobbs.
Dobbs was uncomfortable in the pocket and made his play. Cousins was patient and ran the play as designed – and got a lower grade.
This made me wonder. From my baseball background it reminded me of an outfilder who runs in at the crack of the bat, and then has to run like hell to catch the ball versus the good outfielder who merely takes a couple steps back and makes a routine catch. Fans rave over the former but real ball players know better.
Long story, you got to know what you’re doing.

QBR uses weighted measures, that usually reward a QB for being a playmaker, vice a distributor of the ball. It’s supposedly a “better metric” of the impact a QB has on the outcome of a game. So when the QB scores a TD by running it in himself, vice throwing a TD, he gets looked at more favorably.

To me that’s wrong.
It’s like rewarding pitchers more for how they field bunts versus throwing the ball.

Well this metric came to be, about the time the “dual threat” QB’s became the rage, and obviously highlights this.

Does the media speak highly of DVOA?

I always thought of it as an under-the-radar metric. At any rate, it helps me see which teams are likely to have their W/L % improve or worsen over the course of the season based on expected outcome.

I see DVOA highlighted in many articles I read. Thus, I kinda feel like pundits tout it as evidence a defense is doing well, (or not).

Get your picks in for Pick ‘Em League before the big game!

This is mostly a public service announcement. Most everyone has their picks in but Bow and Little Fishin’, and their modus operandi is to do it around this time anyway.

But I like to throw reminders out there just in case anyone forgets. It’s free.

But Goff went 18-18. Don’t think too deeply about the fact that something like 250 of his 280 yards was after the catch though or that there were a couple incompletions negated by penalties. Throwing screen passes is tough.

I retired the end of August. I turn 70 in January. The 18 hour days, traipsing around all over the world, and constantly stressing about real world National Security threats finally caught up with me. Turned the reins over to a younger guy I had pretty much developed over a period of five years. He still calls me at times to ask my advice on things. But really, I have accepted I’m no longer responsible for anything.

But I just sit and my computer and bitch about football work all day, and very few 18 hour days in my life lately. Had lots of that when doing Production Support data work. Fall colors are nice, but that also means that a few short weeks after the colors begin, there is 7 months of a barren wasteland. 7 months of dead looking trees. 7 months of wondering why I thought the fall colors were a good thing. Several months of living in the dark because the days are so short that when you get up it’s dark and when you go to bed it’s dark.

As you can tell, I’m in a great mood this morning.

Good morning and SKOL (we already FTP). The dock workers strike needs to be dealt with by the President quickly. He needs to advise the Unions he will declare a state of emergency and use whatever resources are needed to keep goods flowing through the ports. Be fair, and level-headed, but be firm. These unions will not hold the country hostage. Period.

Biden has said that he won’t use a federal labor law known as the Taft-Hartley Act to intervene in the strike. Under that law, Biden could take action that results in an 80-day “cooling off” period for negotiations to resume while workers are back at work.

When asked if he would intervene on the strike, Biden said “no”. When asked why, he said “because there’s collective bargaining, and I don’t believe in Taft-Hartley”.

Too bad installing robots will take months. I’d give them whatever pay raise they want, but there would be no agreements to not automate, which is the other big hold up with the union. So, I guess I would come up with a way to set up a secondary corporation that prepares to automates and then I sell the docks from one company to the other and automate the shit out of it. You wanted a 75% pay raise for uneducated, unskilled workers that were already making almost 200k a year? Good for you, they got some of that for a year or two and now they’re out of jobs and flipping burgers at Mickey D’s.
