Vikings Discussion & More

Wow, this week is flying by! I’m running like crazy trying to get all of my work done before we leave for Minneapolis next Tuesday. I’m looking forward to the trip. I’m not much of a basketball fan, but it should still be fun. My idea of ‘good basketball’ is watching class B action in small town North Dakota, I’m guessing the NBA is slightly better. At the very least, the players will be much taller. It’ll be a good time to get out of Bismarck, it sounds like it’s going to be bitter cold and windy next week. @The weather in Minneapolis should be much warmer.@

Life is also flying by, it’s almost impossible to believe that my son is going to be 10 years old in a couple days. It’s a joy watching him grow up, but it’s a bit sad, too. I’m sure y’all can relate. It’s a reminder to make the most of the time we have together.

I still have zero enthusiasm for watching the Super Bowl. I’m glad that we have kiddo’s birthday that day, and I still plan to do some ice fishing instead of watching the game. The weather sounds fairly nasty, but as long as the wind isn’t crazy, it won’t stop me. The pop-up won’t tolerate strong winds, I’ve gone sailing across the ice in that thing once. While it was a fun ride, I don’t really care to experience it again.

Vikings News

Vikings.com digs into next gen stats to highlight the factors that led to the massive improvement in the Vikings defense.

One of my all-time favorite Vikings, John Randle, talks about the Vikings’ future on ‘Super Bowl Live’. I love Randle, everyone said he was too small, but his insane motor and raging intensity made him a dominant presence on the field, and propelled him from undrafted rookie to hall-of-famer and one of the best D linemen to ever play the game. Randall McDaniel told us that he had to go up against Randle in practice, and he practiced just like he played. He said something like ‘that guy ran wide open ALL THE TIME, even in practice, he went after it like he was playing in the Super Bowl.

NFL News

NFL.com looks at one offseason move for each NFC team.

The NFL is heading to Australia, and the Rams will be the designated team for the first NFL game in the land down under, from CBS Sports.

CBS Sports has a Super Bowl injury report for the Eagles, and a Super Bowl injury report for the Chiefs.

Media Selection

This was one of my son’s favorite videos when he was a little fella. He’d ask me “Dad, can we watch that crazy man again?”. I’m not sure how many times we watched this, but it was A LOT. Enjoy!

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.

I was reading a book listing from a large bookseller and then read their company profile blurb. They say they are a socially conscious business. What does that even mean? If you say you are socially conscious does that make you socially conscious? Does your social consciousness apply to everyone? Since you are a mega bookseller and undercut all the mom and pop stores in price therefore possible putting some of them out of business, does that make you socially conscious?

Since there has been so much religion talk today, I have decided to bless you with one of my favorite religion jokes (apologies if I have shared it before.)

A man, (a Christ follower) died and ascended to heaven where St. Peter met him at the pearly gates and offered to show him around. St. Peter took him to one great hall where there was a worship service going on with much joy, dancing and singing. St. Peter said “these are our Pentecostals” . St. Peter than took him to a large open picnic area where there was a BBQ picnic with softball, frisbee, delicious food and beverages. St. Peter said “these are our Catholics”. Then they arrived at a sturdy church building and quietly entered into the back row, people we solemnly sitting and reading the bible and praying to themselves. The man asked St. Peter “Why is there no joy, here? Why is every one so quiet and solemn?” St. Peter replied “Shhhhh! These are the Baptists, they think they are the only ones up here!”.

It is interesting seeing the different outlooks of all of the characters on this blog. I find it fascinating how everyone was shaped by nature and nurture to see the world the way they do. It is also interesting how groups of people will try to lump everyone into a certain “bucket”. Liberal, conservative, libertarian, democrat, republican, etc. However, everyone has a unique view of the world. My dad was a Pentecostal preacher and not the modern day mega-church Pentecostal, but a 1950s, ultra-conservative (religiously), early American Pentecostal that had slide away from his roots until he rediscovered those roots in East Texas. Even in the mid-century Pentecostal movement, East Texas was probably more conservative than most areas. From the outside, the bucket that people would put him in would be ultra-conservative, science hating, government hating, racist, closed minded bigot. He was very, very conservative, however he was always very interested in science, never mentioned any hate or fear of the government and all of us kids all had all of the vaccines and medical treatment necessary. The churches back then in East Texas were very segregated, and yet he went and preached in many “black” Pentecostal churches and never, ever said anything that was remotely racist. I guess the whole purpose of my rambling is that don’t judge anyone by just a small glimpse of what they look like or a small glimpse of what they say on a blog. You can be conservative and be a doctor. You can be conservative and not be a government hater. You can be a liberal and not be sucked in by “gun control”. You can be a conservative or a liberal and not be a bigot. We are all very unique.

That is an interesting question that deeper religious and philosophical minds than mind have pondered. I officiated a funeral where I did not necessarily agree with the majority of the people on some theology. I ministered to those that were in attendance and kept my mouth shut on my own opinion. I believe there is a path to follow, but I also believe that path may not always look the way that I think it should. For example, some people I know do not believe in death bed conversions. I disagree. What if a person can’t talk and sincerely repents in their mind? Will they go to heaven? I am not the final Judge. God is.

Man, don’t tell a Lutheran that!

Knowing all of the main differences between denominations are a fun hobby of mine.

Lutheran and Catholics have completely different soteriology, which is why the Reformation happen. Catholics do a more infused grace thing, which emphasize faith and works in achieving salvation.

Luther basically popularized salvation by grace alone through faith alone.

The Wrenage breakdown of denominations goes like this:

Catholic, Protestant and Cults.

Cults include Jehovah Witness, Seventh Day Adventist, Christian Science, etc.

Catholic is Catholic.

Protestant breaks down into Lutheran and Reformed.

Reformed then breaks down into Baptist, non-denominations, Assembly of God, etc.

But at the upper level, the main difference between Lutheran and Reformed are in the areas of Lords Supper, Baptism, Decision Theology and Eschatology…

Calvinists believe that, at the beginning of time, God selected a limited number of souls to grant salvation and there’s nothing any individual person can do during their mortal life to alter their eternal fate. Either you were chosen or you were not chosen, and that’s all there is to it.

Doesn’t mean anything. Doctrinal positions are found in doctrinal statements. The official position of the episcopalian church is that they are pro-gay. They also recognize Islam, Buddhism and whatever else. Those official positions are not compatible with Christianity.

Certainly, there can be genuine believes within the church, probably lots of nice people. But official source doctrines are what is used to define if a church is Christian or not. According to the source documents, episcopalian is heterodox to the point of being more of a social organization than an orthodox Christian organization.

Them’s the breaks when dealing with source documents. Definitions matter.

Isn’t that true? I say that though because in many denominations, at least in the past, there was often a distinct difference in the rural versus city churches. For example back in the 1920-30s, the city Methodist churches had already become more “modern and sophisticated” while the rural churches still had people running the aisles, shouting loudly and ladies “dancing in the spirit” until their hair fell down and their shoes were kicked off. You would be hard pressed to find any Methodist church like that now, but there are still differences in rural churches of many denominations.

Sorry to burst bubbles. You do not get the flu from the flu shot.

You experience flu-like symptoms as your immune system reacts to the inactivated (or extremely weakened) virus in the vaccine, but you don’t “get the flu.”

If, by some stroke of bad luck, you DO get the flu right after getting the shot, it was already colonizing inside of you and you were going to get the flu regardless.

Then again, this IS the government we’re talking about. And they lie.

Well, here’s the skinny on that:

You could have been exposed to the flu either before or shortly after getting the shot. It takes several days to a week for immunity to build up.

You could have something else that has flu-like symptoms.

You could just be having an immune response as you develop the antibodies to fight the vaccine virus. Happens to me every year.

I have a fun time with AI. It is an interesting development.

Like, the Internet was a huge development because of the way it gives everyone all of this data. AI is now delivering that data is a much more conversational, personalized targeted way.

Like I could see counselors getting replaced by AI. I go to marriage counseling with the wife here and there. It has been necessary sometimes when dealing with a particularly grueling, emotional issue.

I did not particularly like any of the counselors, except pastors. They are cool.

I experimented with using AI as a counselor and holy moly! It gave an amazing response, completely objective, not for any side or the other, along with tons of practical communication advice.

Straight up truth, AI was better than 100 percent of any secular counselor I have heard dispensing advice. I basically read through its response with my mouth open in disbelief that it was that good.

Unless the prices stay at that rate for more than a few months, most restaurants eat that added cost or don’t offer it. It would not make financial sense to change the menu for a temporary spike in prices.

When we owned a restaurant, right after covid, everything’s cost shot up. we lost money for most of the 1st year after covid. Until prices went down or we were able to get a new menu out with updated prices.

I picked up one of our vizslas when he was a wee pup in the parking lot of Cabela’s in Owatonna way back in 2005. He was spoken for long before that but the breeder had one pup not spoken for and had all the puppies in a cage trying to attract someone to buy that last pup. I remember calling the breeder the morning he turned precisely 7 weeks old to arrange a pickup time and her son telling me they were all over in Owatonna…brutally hot and humid day I about exceeded the speed of light driving there from Roch.

Brad, I love that video. And yes, enjoy the time with your family. Kids grow up way too fast.

You guys hitting the water park again?

Timberwolves are fun live. It has been about 8 years since I have gone to a game. Pretty much like most sporting events, a large crowd makes it more fun, and you will pay 10 bucks for popcorn that costs 40 cents to make.

Still cheaper than Disney.

One more day to Friday!
