Rahm ganks his tee shot on 18 into the left trees and it bounces out about 150 yards down the fairway. Hits an iron about 200 yards then pitches the ball onto the green close to the hole.

Well the A&M kid stumbled his way to the finish, but he still won low amateur. Rahm finishes up on 17 with a sizeable lead. Done and dusted. Rahm wins the Masters.

LIV golf took 3 out of the top 5 spots.

Don’t know if you saw Phil’s 2nd shot swing on 17 he almost holed from 150? Was as smooth as butter.

Well now…

“The Baltimore Ravens have yet to secure Lamar Jackson’s future after they slapped the franchise tag on their quarterback. But on Sunday they secured a deal with Odell Beckham Jr.”

Will that signing mean something to Lamar?

TomPelissero

More details on Odell Beckham Jr.‘s one-year deal with the #Ravens:
$13.835 million signing bonus
$1.165 million base salary
$3M in reachable incentives
So OBJ will make at least $15 million and as much as $18M on the deal negotiated by agent Zeke Sandhu.

Not a great fit considering they don’t have a qb who’s committed to play. OBJ being there will not deter LJ from sticking to his guns.

Game on. Rahm and Brooks tied at -10. Other guys within 2, 3, 4, 5 shots. Lot of guys could still win this.

Thank you. If I might a question for you and the other here. It’s fairly well discussed how bad the defense has been, for several years even. What I wonder about, and not discussed much, is the level of physicality they play at. We may not be last in all the defensive stats, but not to many if any defenses play less physical than we do. Wonder why?
When I read about many of the mock drafts, I just think please go out and get an absolute stud for the defense – someone who really likes to hit people.

Ya I agree with that. I’m a Kirk guy but if they want to move on then I think QB is a priority in round 1. If kirk has a shot at sticking around a couple more years a DT or game changing OLB would be nice.

Agree we need more aggressive and toughness on defense. Hoping Flores fixes some of that too

I think Flores is going to bring a new level of aggressiveness to this team.

Its much needed with as passive as they’ve been the last few years.

What players do you like??

JRobert

Don’t know college players that well. Maybe a LB who understands the concept of “die in the hole.” Or a DL who brings it every play, someone the other guys offense has to account for on every play.
I heard a great coach when asked what he needed on defense was just a few guys that know the difference between go get em and sic em. I’m not sure we have any “sic ems” and a few that aren’t even go get em.
I say this somewhat tongue in cheek, but out guys need to spend a lot more time in the weight room and perhaps eat some raw red meat. Wouldn’t hurt for a couple of our IOLmen too.

starting think this kid could be a steal at 23. RAS isn’t gospel, but for CBs it’s a pretty good indicator. Similar size to Branch and could be a move around guy for Flores

Deonte is a big, strong, physical cornerback with excellent speed and agility to frustrate and defend the best receivers you can throw at him. He is smart, understands routes, and has the makeup speed to stay with just about any size receiver. Deonte has the quickness to be used on the outside covering wide receivers, and the quickness and strength to cover those big slot Receivers/Tight Ends. If you use Deonte as a slot corner he is big enough and physical enough to Blitz as well as smart enough to disrupt any size receiver off the line or cover them down the field because of his speed. Deonte has the size to be moved to safety and could play any one of the safety positions in the box or as a single high safety because he is a solid tackler.

I like this part.

Impressive cornerback with plus-level height and length. He also has rare reactionary athleticism for a corner his size, showing the ability to flip his hips run vertical, then sink his hips and break back downhill toward the ball.

I wouldn’t hate him if/when the Vikings trade down

I’m not interested in a CB with the 23rd selection since CB has been so hit or miss in the 1st round, then again the Vikings don’t care what I think

There could be worse picks.

tradeback seems so likely though.

48&55 from DET would be pretty close to equal.

until you throw in the Vikings getting Hock 48 and 119 for 23.

Doesn’t seem horrible at all.

Hey Kathy, thanks. I hit a diving board doing an inward two and half summersault diving the Presidents Cup 3 meter competition back when I was 15. Lucky I didn’t break my neck or paralyze myself. Slammed my lower jaw into my upper jaw and fractured pretty much every tooth in my head. Felt like I had a mouth full of egg shells. Took over a year to reconstruct my jaw and teeth. 53 some years later, all those reconstructed teeth had deteriorated to the point my dentist said “it’s time”.

We were tied for 25th in the league for yards per rush, and tied 27th in the league in rushing yards per game last year. Our defense was 31st in the league in total defense and 30th in the league in points allowed. Our kicker sucked and may have been the worst in the league. How did we manage to win 13 games? Crazy.

Been rewatching the games from last year on NFL+. Have to say we had a lot of late game stops by the defense after the offense scored that allowed us to win. In 2021 we gave up 4 games late after the offense scored to lose games.

While the offseason still has some twists and turns left, KAM went about his upgrade/rebuild of the defense and now it looks like we’ll have at least seven new starters this year. Some were already on the team, some were added:

1.    Brian Asamoah (LB)
2.      Andrew Booth (CB)
3.      Lewis Cine (S)
4.      Marcus Davenport (OLB) Z. Smith is a draft night trade IMO
5.      Dean Lowry (DT)
6.      Byron Murphy (CB)
7.      Khyiris Tonga (DT)

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN is saying that the Lions have made “a strong contract offer” for Teddy Bridgewater. Shortly thereafter, Fowler explained that the QB is still making up his mind: “Bridgewater hasn’t decided where he’s playing as he takes his time this offseason. Bridgewater can reunite w/ Dan Campbell from their New Orleans days.”

Bridgewater as Goff’s back-up would be a strong move for the Lions.

My expectation this year in the draft, whether the Vikings stay at 23, or trade back, is they will pick the best defensive player on the board with their first pick. Our offense was 7th in the league last year in total offense and 8th in the league in scoring. BTW Cousins was 4th in the league in passing yards, and 5th in the league in passing TD’s. Our defense was 31st in the league in total defense and 30th in the league in points allowed. We need a defense that can stop the other QB from looking like the second coming of Joe Montana every damn game.

What It Feels Like To Read NFL Coverage In April

Mick
Mick
8 April 2023 5:02 am

Is anyone else excited for the 2-3 TE sets that are going to come this year?

a little…. 2010-2012 Pats feel to it with Gronk/Hernandez.

Belichick was quoted last year as saying….

“They use the jumbo lineman more than anybody in the league. They use two tight ends a lot. Again, multiple formations, multiple shifts, and a lot of stuff before the snap. Then the ball is snapped you better be ready to go because they’re coming after you, and they’ve got a great back, so there’s no rest for the weary there.”

“It’s one tight end, two tight ends, three tight ends, two tight ends and a jumbo lineman. There are multiple formations where they put them all on one side and balance them off. Put them all on the other side and shift them from one side to the other side. Shift from balanced to overloaded. Unbalanced line, shift unbalanced line, you name it. There are a lot of things for the defense to worry about.”

KO and the Vikings offense are going to be cooking this year.

Hock, Oliver, and Ham are all very good at catching passes. I don’t think WR is going to be in the mix this draft. Especially early.

Belichick was speaking about the Browns.

also… Brian Flores was with the Pats on offense and defense through the Gronk/Hernandez years.

these 2 TE sets are known as 3-4 Killers.

8 April 2023 7:38 am

I am very excited about the 12/13 personnel sets. Thats why I’m a big proponent of drafting Mayer at 23. He’s shown hands better than Hockenson and Oliver and is on par with the level of blocking prowess as Oliver. What a combo these three would present with JJ on the outside and Cook out of the backfield the play designs are endless. We would not need to worry about spending a pick on a WR. Let do it.

Michael Mayer

TE Notre Dame

Height: 6 – 4 | Weight: 249 | RAS: 7.62

At 6’4 1/2″ and 251 pounds, Mayer already has the look of an NFL tight end. He puts this size and apparent functional length to good use as a dangerous pass-catching target at TE for Notre Dame. Meanwhile, he’s demonstrated impressive aptitude in multiple aspects of blocking from the position. As one of the top all-around tight end prospects we’ve seen for a long time, Mayer has a scouting report that should leave NFL scouts salivating.

8 April 2023 7:59 am

I’m good with the guys who have had success at the NFL level .

we already gave up a 2 for Hock.

I still think cook gets moved before next season… post 6/1 most likely.

but excited none the less.

brady had monster years in those days… his mid 30’s with Welker being the #1 WR followed by 2 TEs.

later rounds maybe grab a TE but not early.

Mick
Mick
Reply to  Mick
8 April 2023 8:17 am

Welker is not JJ either.

I think this offense is going to be a lot of fun this year.

if the defense takes they step to get into the top half of the league this team will make some noise.

8 April 2023 8:29 am

I disagree…I think you double down on the scheme and draft Mayer for depth and scheme flexibility. You get your pass catcher you need to add, a blocking addition in the run game, depth in case of injuries and some leverage in the Hockenson extension negations. It just fits all around. You’re wrong.

You just added Oliver. Who’s a solid pass catcher.

have Ham… who is also a solid Pass Catcher.

And Mundt, Muse, and Ellefson.

I don’t hate taking a TE but day 3. Whyle out of Cincinnati would be a good target.

Ham is a blocker and occasional pass catcher.

We’re talking about putting a game changing player on the field that is Hockenson level that can catch 50+ balls in a season. That’s not Oliver he’s 99% a run blocking tool. He’s posted in succession 3, 9 and 14 catches each of his 3 years in the league for a grand total of 26 career catches lol. The other 3 guys are just….guys…

We need a difference maker not a bland sandwich. Mayer is an elite prospect that teamed with Hockenson could set records for what they could accomplish from a 12 personnel set with Cousins dealing and JJ roaming the intermediate and deep. Could be special.

That’s so weird because coming out he was only a pass catching/blocking prospect.

Josh has those long arms and legs that makes it hard for him to be a great run blocker but he gets the job done, because of his effort.

And then this..

The offense can still run or pass the ball because Josh can catch the ball down the field as well as most receivers and he is quick off the line, better than most other tight ends. He is match up nightmare in coverage for LB’s and safeties because of those long arms and legs. Josh has the talent and passion to be an excellent Tight End for the team that selects him similar to the Redskins Jordan Reed.

So I think the Vikings already have that in Oliver and that’s why he was paid so well.

Here was his wrote up on Mayer…

CONCERNS

Michael has a lot of production and has played a lot so it surprises me that he is not a very good blocker in space or lining up on the line. He shows a lack of hand strength and fixability and passion to make blocks which surprises me. For his size he is not a very strong blocker. Michael runs his routes in a rudimentary fashion. He expects the ball to come to him and doesn’t seem to be on the same wavelength or read defenses to cut off routes and help his quarterback in adverse situations. When used in the backfield on passing downs he lines up off the line so that he gets a free release and that helps him to be open. His lack of strong hands is an issue when catching balls and in run-after-the-catch situations and will result in drop passes and fumbles. Michael lacks the speed and quickness off the snap and running his routes, that you would expect, from a player with his production.

Lol….you’re living off pipe dreams and ignoring reality of what has actually happened on the field…you know which carries more weight than fantasies.

Oliver has shown NOTHING in the passing catching dept. To the point offenses don’t even look his way. Why you think the Vikings paid him to be a pass catcher is beyond a joke he’s done nothing in that dept.

Who wrote that Mayer concerns lol.. the guy in high school who Mayer stole his girlfriend lol. It’s beyond hyper critical and is absolutely the exact opposite of what every other scout has written about Mayer or what he’s shown on tape.

Ridiculously inept and inaccurate.

You should not use inaccurate information to try and support you opinions.

PFF Mayer overview:

Mayer is as polished a tight end as you’ll see in the draft. And he’s only a true junior. He racked up 2,099 yards and 18 scores in his Notre Dame career.

Where he wins: Physicality
Mayer’s entire game stems from being the aggressor. Whether it’s his work as a blocker, the subtle shove to get away from coverage or an ill-intentioned stiff arm in the open field — Mayer is going to take the fight to defenders.

What’s his role: Inline tight end
If you want a tight end who can go head-to-head with defensive ends in the run game while being an option route savant over the middle of the field, Mayer is your guy. That’s what he was put on this Earth to do.

What can he Improve: Speed
I know, I know: speed is not something that can usually improve. However, Mayer is very young for a top tight end prospect coming out and doesn’t have to be 265 pounds. There’s some excess weight there he could trim to add a little more dynamism to his game.

NFL.com

Mayer’s Notre Dame career started with a bang, as he garnered Freshman All-American and third-team All-ACC honors by tying for the Irish lead with 42 receptions (450 yards, 10.7 per, two TDs in 12 games, three starts).

He again topped the squad with 71 receptions (840 yards, 11.8 per) and tied for the team lead with seven receiving scores in 12 starts his sophomore campaign.

Mayer was a first-team Associated Press All-American and John Mackey Award (nation’s top tight end) finalist his junior season, breaking his own school record for tight ends with nine receiving touchdowns and leading the team with 67 receptions for 809 receiving yards (12.1 per).

He also set the Notre Dame record for tight ends in single-season receptions and receiving yards in 2021 and is the school’s all-time leader in all three categories for the position. — by Chad Reuter

I’d also add that Mayer was ND’s only receiving option.

lead by 500 yards in ‘22 to the next closest receiver and in ‘21 had 50 less yards but 30 more receptions than the next closest…. Who didn’t even get drafted. And never made it off of the Jags practice squad.

slow down fella.

Well Mayer produced and learned the nuances of high level play so he benefited from the lack of WR skill at ND.

All that said I’d be shocked if the Vikings picked Mayer it’s just not in the window of value when KAM needs more picks and a lot of help on defense. We’ll see.

He produced,

and could replicate in the NFL…

but who knows.

they’re set up now very well with Hock Oliver and Ham.

and I’m excited for the heavy sets to come out.

and I do not think they draft a WR early either.

No they won’t likely draft at all day 1. I think it’s 99% they trade back.

One question, Who are the players in rd 1 that realistically could slide they would without hesitation pick at 23 and not trade back?

Njigba (maybe)
Gonzales (likely)
Quentin J (maybe)
Levis (never)
Witherspoon (likely)
Mayer (doubtful)
Skoronski (likely) elite guard potential

Did you listen to the Podcast?

My guy would be Joey Porter. I could se the slide but not sold that it would happen. I think hes the best CB in the draft.

I’d also consider Branch and Bresee.

More than likely I would expect the tradeback as there are some quality picks in the 40-70 range they could pick up.

I’m really a fan of the tradeback with DET with 23 going there and 48&55 coming to MN.

I don’t love giving them 3 1’s but getting those 2 2’s would be real sweet.

Being a realist I agree I’d take the two picks from Detroit and trade back because our roster isn’t anywhere near the development level as the Lions…we’re not in the same window to compete for a championship as they are. We’re at least 2-3 years out. So yes make the trade. Letting them add a couple elite talents isn’t a big deal because as we round this roster in to form to compete, they’ll be having to pay Hutchinson and all these top guys and the playing field will be level for us.

If this defense can be competent….

theyre going to make some noise.

meaning… giving up less than the league avg of 22.3PPG.

I think last year it was almost 26… and almost worst in the league.

KC was 16th with 21.6PPG

Vikings do that and look out.

yeah I’m not holding out a lot of hope for this year it’s just going to be to hard with a 1st place schedule and the comebacks will not be anything close to last year. I predict we’ll miss the playoffs in 2022 and that’s ok. We can’t compete with San Fran and Philly right now.

When you think about an NFL team with a roster of 53 guys and an entire PS then think I wonder if any of them have red flags in their personnel file….you then realize yeah that’s all straight pre draft smoke.

Also, I don’t see Gonzales or Witherspoon sliding.

For whatever reason they’re being heralded as the top 2.

If one does it would be Porter Jr. who happens to be my favorite.

A buch of the reports have Levis dropping now and Hooker moving up.

Wild.

Oliver was buried behind Andrews on the Bal depth chart as far as pass catching goes and was used more as a blocker.

I think that changes in MN.

when he came out he was billed as a pass catcher.

he’s got the athletic ability to go along with it.

im not saying he’s Gronk 2.0 but the Vikings have invested heavily into the position and will not be adding another first round pick.

that would be silly.

Time will tell Mayers career, I wish him the best but Boylhart has been doing this a long time. He writes based on tape and is right a lot more than most.

That’s my point…athleticism only, yes the foundation for the player but in no way does it reflect or complete the players abilities on the field.
