Happy hump day, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion. Everyday you can join us for Minnesota Vikings news, Minnesota Vikings talk, NFL news and updates, and all of those other things that you have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation. As always, remember to be cool to one another.

The Vikings host the *aints on Sunday, a team that seems to have improved since the head coaching change. A couple weeks ago, this seemed like a fairly easy win, but the team looked much better in the one game they’ve played since Josh McDaniels was fired as head coach and replaced with Antonio Pierce. Hopefully the Vikings can knock them back off course where they belong.

Minnesota Vikings Discussion Topic of the Day

Given the Vikings’ current position, how high are your expectations? Do you expect the Vikings to make the playoffs this year? If so, how far do you think they can go?

I know much depends on how the QB position plays out, but I think the defense is equally as vital. They’re currently around the middle of the pack in both points allowed and yards allowed per game, according to footballdatabase. Flores must continue to field an average to above average defense in order for the Vikings to go very far.

Minnesota Vikings News:

The funeral announcement and obituary for our friend Scott “Admiral Big Gun” Backstrom. I’m attending the funeral service on Saturday, so if any of you are planning to be there, please let me know, it would be cool to meet a few more of you. Email me at [email protected]. You can message me at Twitter or Bookface as well, I might see it.

Vikings.com looks at the most recent power rankings, Vikings WR Justin Jefferson surprised a 2023 NFL fan of the year nominee, and see Vikings @ Falcons through the lens.

SI.com reported that Roger Goodell floated the idea of a London Super Bowl.

MSN floats the idea that Kevin O’Connell may be the next offensive genius head coach. I’d really love to see Flores stick around for another year or two to see how far these two can go together.

CBS shares what they learned from each team in week 9. They learned that the Bears need Fields back, giggle. They do make a good point about Dobbs boosting the weak running game.

HC Mike Vrabel announced that Will Levis will remain the Titans starter for the rest of 2023 and Tannehill will be the backup, per NFL.com. Also, Wentz will back up Stafford in LA, and Robert Saleh says it’s lazy to blame the Jets’ offensive problems solely on Zach Wilson.

Yahoo Sports looks at how poor QB play has plagued the league this year. Eh, I think it’s mainly due to injuries. Plus, there are very few elite QBs in the league right now.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Because I’m a loser, I went and looked into the Millennials not aging into conservatism thing.

Interesting points I found:

Canada conservatives figured out that home ownership correlated with conservatism and pushed policies that addressed this.

Jesse Watters of Fox news ran stats that unmarried women vote dem by 68% .
Married women were 55% for republican, which was right in line with married men.
Unmarried men over 40 had similar rates as married men. Basically men aged into conservatives. Women did not unless they got married. No idea why.
See the link below for his take. His “solution” pissed a lot of people off.

There was a bunch of other data about children that was more muddy, but basically came down to having a stable income, which lead to a more traditional family.

Millennials are putting off home ownership, marriage and children until much later than past generations. This is delaying the liberal to conservative transformation for both men and women, and in women, it appears to stop the process completely…which seems weird to me.

Basically if Republicans want to reverse this trend, they need to figure out how to get people married, into a house, and start having families.

Or it is all fake news and nothing to worry about.

Turnovers have been our problem…but that is the point…I think we have Solid offense and defense and the somewhat bizarre T.O. differential early in the season was what killed us.

This year’s team is way better than last year’s team. Have to see what happens to that yards per play without Kirk…we were 5th heading into last week.

So since we brought up Al Gore and the internet and the fact that he is a Perv.

I wanted to know stats about internet porn, here is what I found.
25 to 30 percent of all internet searches/downloads are Porn related.
20 to 35 percent of females have viewed porn in the last year.

As much as 70 percent of internet porn viewing happens between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m…people are watching porn during work…I may have to start restricting the work from home policy.

Many of you younger folks probably already knew these stats…I frankly am a bit surprised.

My last employer (prison) did not allow any internet access to outside the institution.
Unless you were a supervisor or needed it specifically for you job, i.e. Legal Officer.
Even those had the sites they visited logged and they could be reviewed when deemed necessary by ‘the bosses’.

I was happy with no outside access, I didn’t have to worry about ‘will this site get me in trouble in the future’.
Heck I didn’t even log into the e-mail they provided since once it showed you opened an e-mail you were required to know what was in that e-mail. You couldn’t claim ignorance of a policy if you opened an e-mail about that policy several years ago.

We even had a few guys fired because they opened e-mails from co-workers that were ‘offensive’ and deleted them instead of reporting them as required by the ‘Woke State Rules’.

Upon further thought review.

We had a Warden that was ‘reassigned’ because she claimed she didn’t know about a policy and they showed she opened the e-mail explaining it months prior. Once they get you for ‘less than honest’ you are done.

The guys were not fired for deleting jokes. Only the ones who forwarded them were fired (2nd offense) or fined (1st Offense). The ones who only deleted them were written up and given ‘additional training’.
Those were jokes that some one found offensive and submitted a complaint. The investigation would find anyone who looked at the offending joke e-mail.

Yeah, I really don’t miss that place.

Well he needs to be much, much more dangerous-er…

Here is a complete list of the QBs in 2023 who average less than 6 yards per attempt:

Josh Dobbs 5.8
Daniel Jones 5.7
Brian Hoyer 5.5
Bryce Young 5.5
Mitch Trubisky 4.9
Brett Rypien 4.5

Now I am not saying he needs to be at Cousins level – 7.5, but we will not be successful offensively if he remains down in the 5s.

what’s most interesting to me is watching how a qb is put into this offense, with its weapons and support and how they do.

Just one caveat and I have only seen Dobbs for like 2 quarters ever. Many scambling type QB’s get happy feet fairly quickly and don’t let the play fully develop. With our WR’s and scheme, and good line play, be patient and only run as last resort. If he does that, everything should be fine.

Yes to this. I have watched 2 separate film breakdowns now of Dobbs from Sunday. Both point out that when he ran in for a TD he had Hock breaking open for a TD and he had time to throw it. It was exactly supposed to go to Hock and he was open…Dobbs bailed early.

Again, cutting him a lot of slack for this Sunday since that was remarkable…but I would hope as he settles in we see less bailing and more throwing to open receivers.

Having Hock breaking open for a TD is not the same as being is a situation where he can see that Hock is breaking open for a TD.

Hindsight is 20/20, being under extreme pressure in a complex offense for the 1st time is not.

Was the results of the play positive? the rest is subjective speculation.

NoDakRube

Respectfully disagree, the play was designed for Hock to break open, and Dobbs knew that from the way the play developed…pump fake to the WR at the line to freeze the safety a tish and allow the stop and stutter by Hock to gain separation. Dobbs bailed early on a perfectly designed play.

Yes, that is why he doesn’t need to be at 7.5, but we will not be successful if he remains in the 5…All of the QBs listed are pretty much on failing teams this year..You need to be able to throw the ball effectively, to this point in his career Dobbs has not. Again, he now has better weapons and support, so maybe he will.

I dont feel like scrolling down anymore. I see our O line is ranked 6th, and the question about is it weighted for pass pro more than run and I dont think thats the case. Our run game being ass has been from lack of rushing attempts AND Mattison not seeing lanes for shit. Theres a break down of our O line from Sundays games and theres several times where Mattison literally runs away from a gaping run lane that opens up and decides to follow his O line into a pile of defenders. Its frustrating to watch. Vikings will be drafting an RB in the mid rounds in 24 me thinks. Unsure of what the FA market is but with the $$ they were wanting THIS off season, its best to stay away.

I mean, I get the points that are being made. I would like to see Kene and Chandler in there. From my understanding, Chandler is in the dog house because he was incapable of blocking, either from lack of knowledge in the scheme or lack of effort but his running ability was great. Now that we dont have a statue in the pocket, his ability to pass block isn’t AS needed, I think we should give him a 60/40 split or toss in some Kene, might as well see what we got because we KNOW what we have with Mattison.

I’d just say, put any of them at RB – that’s OK. But, overall, we are not going to be good running the ball (even adequate) if they continue to allow penetration from the IOL.
And when you think about it, most teams are playing pass defense against us – they don’t fear our running – and we still get stuffed.
but if a change in back helps, great.

Think we were up like four. We had driven 80 yards and had a 4th and 1 from their 9 yard line with 1.50 left. Zim went for it – Mattison ran wrong hole and LT had a pretty crappy block.
Seattle drove the field and won. Our defense gave up two 4th and 10’s on the drive.

A current event thought.
A bit sad today.
Still a midwesterner at heart, but spent decades in Northern Virginia.
Was very hopeful for election results there given the new Governor’s big win in 2021.
Just needed to flip one Senate seat to control legislature.
Sadly, got beaten badly – lost both house and Senate.
One social issue is just killing even the best candidates. Not good for future elections.

While I will never, ever vote for a pro-baby killer, I do think we need to have a more nuanced stance as a party…Although no abortions after 15 weeks except in the cases of rape, incest, or danger to the mother seems pretty nuanced, we can’t even get support for that in the purple states.

People on death row are not innocent. That’s a really dumb argument. Being complicate and paying for an abortion but not being the doctor is more like hiring somebody to kill your wife. Good luck getting away from any charges by telling the judge, “well I didn’t pull the trigger so I didn’t do anything wrong.” It is nowhere close to supporting the 2nd amendment and being a school shooter. More like opening the door and letting the school shooter in. Nice try.

You’re twisting it because it’s on your side. Someone is not guilty of killing a baby unless they kill a baby. Then the definition of baby is a gray area. Again if your definition is it begins at conception then what about the 10-40% of fertilized eggs that do not attach to the wall and are essentially a period? Were those babies? Again we all know the answer is no but you won’t use logic because you are so firm on your stance that no logic will sway you so you’ll say yes those were babies… just silly.

You’re just too dug in to playing devil’s advocate and being the smartest guy in the room no matter what. If I get elected and try to make it legal to shoot up schools, but don’t actually shoot any up myself, I am still a piece of shit school shooting proponent. That is nowhere close to advocating for 2nd amendment rights. On abortion, I think both sides need to pull their heads out of their asses and compromise. Neither extreme whether its on demand up to and including birth or total ban from conception is a winning issue. At least 70% of the country would be willing to accept a partial birth abortion ban or after the first trimester. Personally, I am pro-life and I will not hide that, but I would count getting a 15 week or something federal ban as a win and then leave it up to states if they want to go further.

I agree both sides need to compromise. The 2 party system has to have compromise or it doesn’t work. But you want to help? Quit with the crazy verbiage that is only damning to one side. I’m very pro 2nd amendment. Probably more so than pro choice. I want less restrictions on weapons than compromising on 8 week-ish spot on abortion.

This wording is as dumb as the dumb dumb lib memes I see about a kid getting on the bus saying I might not come back mom because we have to choose either guns or getting shot a school. Stop it, it’s dumb. I think we have already hashed this out. It’s something like 10-40% of fertilized eggs are lost to periods just naturally. Are those babies that died? I know you are going to say yes but that’s silly.

Again, I am on both sides of this. I like the Bill Burr stance, I don’t like the government telling me or women what we can do with our bodies… at the same time, if I had a cake cooking in the oven and you came and threw out my cake… I’d go, hey you ruined my cake! haha. It’s so much trickier than you’ve been brain washed to believe in because of hi-jacked religious upbringings. I wish we could just decide a cut off date and move off this topic. 8 weeks, no abortions after 8 weeks unless the pregnancy threatens the life of the mother or in cases of incest or molestation. Done… move on.

Until there is wide spread pain and suffering, and it becomes blatantly, undeniably evident it is from the socialistic policies, people will keep voting for freebies and blaming “rich people”. One of my uncles was posting about how he doesn’t know any Democrats…which is funny since his daughter is basically a communist. Anyways, one of the European cousins chimed in with just how rare conservatives in not only Europe, but the world in general.
I hadn’t really thought about it.
Europe is very liberal with a few outliers like Hungry.
Canada? Liberal
Latin and south America have a few places like Brazil where a conservative party pops up, and some countries I think are still run by right wing dictators (Uruguay?).
But overall liberal.
Asia tends to favor socialism.

Basically the US and Russia (in their opinion) have a reliable right wing that is large enough to win elections on a regular basis.
The rest of the world tends more towards socialism.

Something to think about.

How do you reach them?

Telling them their lazy and want free stuff (even if 💯 accurate) will not help.

What does the Republican party offer a group of young kids that are concerned about the climate, gay rights, abortion and affordable education?

If you look at the polls, those are their interests (to varying degrees).

GOP lacks infrastructure and basically have no “get out the vote” game, which DNC excels at. Also, Ronna needs to go. She, along with corrupt, establishment RINOs, protect the donor class and idiot establishment consultants, who are wrong about most everything, have terrible messaging, and are clueless about everyday Americans. They also intentionally withhold support/money for any candidates they don’t control.

Beshear had tons of money in KY and Cameron had virtually none (got zero from Ronna), couldn’t compete with all the ads. Beshear family name is well known here (his Dad was two term Governor). Also, even though Trump endorsed Cameron, so did McConnell, and Cameron worked for McConnell at one point, so people didn’t trust that. Beshear has a likeable personality, but is a liar. He took credit for things the KY Republican controlled congress did to improve business climate. General population doesn’t know Beshear vetoed most of those, but congress over-rode his vetoes. Zero GOP messaging about that.

Instead of making up numbers, I looked it up. Best I can tell is he is guaranteed $262,222 per week unless suspended. He also has a base salary of $1.08 million that would have been paid already. I think if the Jets cut him there is likely offset language to get some of that $5.8 back. There is also a weekly active roster salary of $70,588 that doesn’t appear to be guaranteed.

If the Jets cut him, they would save $635,292 by him not being on the active roster. He is still guaranteed another $2.36 million that they may be able to get back towards next years cap from cutting him or possible offset language should he sign with another team. His base salary hit is around $500k for the remainder of the year which is more likely to have the offset language.

Basically, I don’t think the Jets take more than about a 500k cap hit if they cut him and could recoup that. Sign him for 1 or 2 mill if he’s cut and that would be in line with what he is still due to make from the Jets, plus he gets to come back to MN and play for a team with a little hope and maybe even get a chance to run the ball a little.

I don’t think RB’s grow on trees – not my thing. And I firmly believe our issue is more a blocking issue than a RB one – even if we don’t have a perfect “Fitted” back.
For example. O’Neil seemed to be two yards in the backfield on about every running play last week. That just won’t work.

Funny aside on the economics of scale…

For years I had my annual physical with a great internist at BC. Was getting harder and harder to get to see him, I would call to make an appointment three months before (how far he was booked out) the date of my exam the year before (have to wait 365 days for insurance to cover), only to be told oh we don’t have his schedule out that far yet, just call back when the schedule opens up – oh when is that – we don’t know should be in a couple of weeks – I call back two weeks later – sorry he is booked out now through the end of that month. Inevitably my annual exam date crept out a month or two every year.

He became director of the IM residency so at that point his practice effectively closed. I asked who he would recommend, newly graduated IM resident so I thought great he’s 25 years younger he’ll be my doc for life. Left the clinic two months after our visit.

Well I’m just gonna establish with the old timer IM doc in GDV.

Call the appointment desk, say I need to see him after January 16 – oh wow that is way out – you can have any time on the 17th 18th or 19th.

I started wearing hearing aids a couple of years ago – I love them – I avoid any loud noises like the plague. For example I wear muffs when I am pounding fence posts or cutting metal with a cutoff saw. Watching that video I got a little anxious thinking of my ears ringing.

The Vikings host the *aints on Sunday, a team that seems to have improved since the head coaching change. A couple weeks ago, this seemed like a fairly easy win, but the team looked much better in the one game they’ve played since Josh McDaniels was fired as head coach (of the RAIDERS) and replaced with Antonio Pierce. Hopefully the Vikings can knock them back off course where they belong.

I know a guy who has alopecia, started in high school. He was a stud athlete, drafted by the Twins, but had blotchy hair in high school. They were playing a neighboring school in baseball, and their dugout kept making comments about his hair, he was pitching I believe. So he threw a pitch and the catcher acted like he was throwing down to first base, and threw the ball right into the dugout.

Think KOC is a pretty good QB coach. Heard a wonderful story from Mark Sanchez a couple of days ago.
Koc was OC for Redskins. Smith goes down, McCoy becomes starter and they bring in Sanchez as backup. McCoy goes down and Sanchez has to go in.
Sanchez says he didn’t know anything, including players names, but would announce the plays KOC gave him. He went on to say after the play call, KOC would tell him so and so is the primary read on the top and so and so is the under read on the play.
With KOC’s background, believe he is a huge asset in the QB room right now.

Hey NoDak, I didn’t get back to yesterday’s thread until late last night. In answer to your question, I do have a lot of religious books in my inventory, but I also have a lot of other types of books for sale in my store. It mostly depends on where I get my inventory. Earlier this year I got a couple of lots that were heavy on science fiction and horror, plus some life science. I got a few books earlier this year that were old westerns and local history. I got a big lot of antique Christian books last fall from a church that was closing. A few years ago I got a large lot from the estate of a conservative radio talk show host. My inventory is all over the board.

Most of the time these days I don’t read anything, just listen to books on tape audio download while I am busy doing other things, I got no time to sit and read, paperback, hardcover, kindle or otherwise. Last book I read was Wrenage’s Dogss of war, but that was a year ago when my youngest was still an infant who would just snooze away as I read. Someday I will have time again, when thing one and thing two get old enough to entertain themselves.

I start reading more when I go to winter hours. May through October, I work 6-4:30 four days a week, so I am zonked out by 9 p.m. Rest of the months, I don’t have to be at work until 7 and I’m done at 3:30, so then I have more time to get chores done after work and don’t have to go to bed as early. I usually read for 30 minutes or so before bed.

So far read First Blood and now on Jim Thompson’s The Killer Inside Me.

I would accept a remake of First Blood more faithful to the novel. Rambo is a lot more interesting of a character in the book. He’s not a out-and-out hero. He is a killer.

In a remake, I picture a ratty, stressed, skinny Andrew Garfield as Rambo and a fat Russell Crowe could be Teasle.

Maybe Mel Gibson as Trautman.

It could work.

My takeaway: Dobbs has the escape skills of Mahomes, but his throws are a bit erratic. Receivers had to jump a lot to haul in his passes.

Dobbs will get a receiver killed and throw some interceptions. It is inevitable.

Still, I like him better in the QB spot than Cousins. Dobbs offers some entertainment value, at least. Team feels less constipated.

He does have escapability and such but to use last game as a reference of his ability to throw accurately… he was flying by the seat of his pants. I would hope that part would get better with more understanding of the offense.

I am hoping Dobbs improves a lot this week. He gave us one of the most exciting finishes ever, but the turnovers really hurt. I would be all over Kirk if he turned the ball then had a great comeback drive. You know, like the Colts game last year. Play less shitty in the beginning and there is no need for heroics.

Still super fun to watch, and I would rather watch Dobbs play vs Kirk.

I am rooting for Hall to get back in there, unless Dobbs takes us on a Keenum/Purdy like run.

I am fine if that happens.
