Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

You can’t make this stuff up.

They take over a campus building then demand that they be provided food and water.

My wife and I are going to the tiny village of Dorchester, Nebraska tonight to play in a 5pt pitch tournament.

We’re going with our friend Emily and several members of her family. It’s at a local bar (guessing the only bar) and I expect an older crowd. Farm people types wearing Bibby’s and Monsanto hats with creased bills. Basically, my wheelhouse.

I’ve only played 10 pt or 7 pt in my lifetime. So it’ll be a bit of an adjustment but I’m looking forward to it.

so, I was reading the thread on tough coaches down a ways in the ass hole dad section…

I had a J.V. football coach who told me if I ever let anyone outside of me (I played D end) he would kick me in the ass. After a game where I let someone get outside he came into the shower and kicked me in the ass…the weird part was he wasn’t gay.

I had a coach in high school (different than the one below) that used several phrases over and over again:

’They will not call off the dogs!’

’Assholes and elbows until the whistle blows!’

’He’s already dumb! I want you knock him stupid!’

and my personal favorite:

’Run like you’re mad at the goddamn grass!’

I still repeat these phrases 30 years later.

Kirk’s achilles isn’t ready by week 1 or he’s suspended for the tampering, Penix starts the season and plays so good they can’t bench him. 18 never sees the field. I just thought about it, there’s no chance of the Heineken revenge game now.

I have learned that there are 4 ways to raise kids, one works well.

Ask much but give them little = abuse.
Ask little but give much = spoiled.
Ask little and give little = neglected.
Ask much and give them much = best chance for success.

Give means love, support, attention, tools, role model.
Ask means behavior, respect, expectations, effort.

I agree – ask much and give much is the way to go.
But I must admit when I saw this – which is extreme and terrible – it brought back memories. Less severe but along these lines.
In the times and place I grew up, fathers (WWll guys) were very tough and demanding.
I could tell some Little League stories that people just wouldn’t believe.

I just know growing up we (the boys) really got pushed and I mean hard – especially in sports. Today it would be called abusive.
For example, I mention Little League, Grew in in a small midwestern city and our LL All Star team would play other small towns. This was a big deal and half the town would come to games and they expected a win.
a practice drill we ended with – a round the horn infield drill. Ground ball to third, throw to first and then first to home to tag a runner. Then all the way around the infield. Then do the whole thing over as a double play ball. Here’s the kicker, anytime someone misplayed a ball, you started all over and we couldn’t leave until we did it perfectly. Cars around the field would have to turn on car lights so we could see.
But those were the expectations. Bad bounce in the face, tough shit. And I can’t say anyone thought to much about this.
Interestingly, for a town of under 5000, six players went on to play college ball. one guy was an All American (Football) and one guy played pro ball.
Football practice was worse – oh yea.

When I was in high school they had a pvc pipe propped up on an old hotel cart with holes punched in it and a hose attached. Water would spray in all directions.

Coach would whistle and yell ‘Water!’ and the whole team would run to the cart to get to the water. After about 90 seconds he’d yell ‘Stop!’ and student manager would shut the water off.

More than once I was on the ground, scooping cold, dirty water into my mouth and onto my face as fast as possible. And then sprint back to where the drills were and immediately start barfing.

Indeed. I had an offensive line coach in HS – real gruff, no nonsense type of guy. When we’d hit the sled he’d stand next to you and if you came up to high out of your stance he’d punch you in the gut – and not a light jab. He once played scout team DLine wearing no pads and ended up in the middle of a scrum and came out with a bloody nose – we loved him for it. Still do.

Reminds me of Basic training. In the field we were required to shave. The only water available was ‘salted’ to replace sodium due to sweat.

In the morning we would have to break ice off of the spigots to get the water, cold shave in a helmet, in the dark, with salted water, using a truck mirror, and then wipe the blood off before formation.

Vikes’ most recent draft got me thinking. Would it be an effective draft strategy to always move up, target a player(s) that will be very good with low likelihood of not contributing at a high level, but, also realize most drafts you’ll draft only 2-3 players?

freezeyface
Reply to  SkolfromMT
1 May 2024 11:25 am

no, because even those 2-3 players could end up being busts…

it’s not an ideal way to do things. you’d have to FOR SURE hit on every draft pick if that’s the case….

where as if you have your normal 7-9 draft picks, you can afford to miss on a couple in hopes to hit on a couple. IMO

Still a better chance, even if slight on drafted players and there are no guarantees you get the UDFAs you want. After the draft, the players get to pick a team so if there is a guy you like you draft him late so he doesn’t have a choice and you own his rights for up to 4 years.

Yep.
You are ‘playing the odds’ no matter which way you go.

Are the odds better if you play it like this year with 2 studs and about 20 maybes? Seems like we got 4 possibles in the 6th and 7th and then a bunch of lottos tickets after that.

Heard that we maxed out the roster with with the UDFAs but then we picked up a punter.

Have no idea of the ‘real’ math but would think it’s a push. 2-3 high draft picks, with a higher chance of success, versus 5 or so lower with much lower chance of success.
And individual circumstances of a particular team would have a bearing.

I think you need a good mix. You have to have depth and you can’t fill all of that with FAs. You have to have cheap backups or you can’t afford the good ones like Jets (and in 4-5 years JJ’s 70 mill per year contract).

Well, sort of. But this gets at the root of some of that. Clear Channel was one of the biggest culprits (this is all covered in the documentary). Car dealership that also gave small business loans. One of those businesses was a radio station, they defaulted. Dealership took over radio. Not know shit about radio but having a very successful business they started applying their business cents to the station. Looking at periods of time as a unit and how can they get the most money for that unit of time. They learned they needed to play music that isn’t good but something that gets you to tap your toe and not change the station so they could charge more for commercials. So the hook of songs needed to be immediate and short songs and songs without any depth.

I was trying to keep it short so terrible explanation.

A basic beat that is very simple and recognizable get to the hook quickly and don’t last very long. There’s no doubt pop music is catchy. These studios pay these song writers a lot of money to write catchy shit but there’s substance there. I don’t remember exactly where in that documentary they talk about Clear Channel but they go over it. Also Red McCombs got rich from Clear Channel, so that guy helped ruin music and the Vikings… fuck that guy.

I do have that tone to me, it’s true. Very biased that way because I feel pop music is killing actual art in music. It’s not all pop music, some music becomes pop music because it’s so good. Eminem for example. But when the music is created to be pop music then the music aspect doesn’t matter. The drive to make money and be popular is what they are shooting for, music be damned.

So I was carrying the doughnuts out, multiple dozens, and I stopped by the door to wait on her while she finished paying. At the table next to the door was 4 7-8 year old girls (per The Teacher) and two moms.

While I was waiting I heard one of the girls say “If you can learn how to organize just imagine how much you can accomplish”. I glanced over and the speaker was stuffing some doughnut into her mouth while the rest were chewing and nodding.

The obvious conclusion is ‘Doughnuts make you Smart’. It made my afternoon.

Not in a general sense. After Kirko threw short of the sticks on 4th & 8 he was on here being pretty negative (upset as his father was in poor health and was the last chance for him to see the Vikes make a run) and I took exception to the negativity (as did others) and chose to pile on, in a pretty regrettable way that was also out of character for me. Dude was hurting (although I didn’t see the all the details regarding his dad – but still should’ve conducted myself better) and I kicked him in the ribs when I could’ve sensed (or read further) that he was upset in a real way about a real thing and should’ve let it go.

Notice I am more comfortable lately a little slower, 72-78 mph, (turning into an old goat?) much better gas mileage also. Interstate speed limit here is 80 mph, so a a lot of drivers doing 85.

4-5 above the posted limit haha. Honestly if the gas prices are well north of 3 bucks and I am not in a hurry I will go 72, because I’ve learned above that, my car’s mileage starts plummeting.

I set my cruise at 75. No more. No less. If I get into a pack of 3/4 vehicles traveling faster I will bump it up a bit. Otherwise I keep it at 75.

I’m never in a hurry and usually always riding dirty – so I don’t speed.

When I was young I ‘drove it like I stole it’ – routinely driving 75-80 mph on gravel (which I grew up driving on) I never wore my seatbelt and would (weekly) drive thru the front yard of my science teacher who lived on the edge of town.

Not in Nebraska. We’ve got delta 8 and THCA & P and a few other variations. And our illustrious AG here is picking a fight with the ‘legal’ dispensaries (again, delta 8 and THCA/P shops) and trying to get them run out. Tried to get a session thru the unicameral here and it failed. They’ll try again. So I err on the side of caution. I think most State Troopers would leave me be – it’s the county Mounties and one-bullet Bobs that concern me, the ones that believe ‘Reefer Madness’ to be true. And believe me, they exist in this state.

Speed limit on the interstate in town is 65 so I set the cruise at 65. Out of town it’s 80 so cruise is usually 78-80. I plan ahead enough to not have to be in a hurry. I have no problem going 10 under.

Mjolnir
Reply to  bowbunch
1 May 2024 10:20 am

Same. I’m pretty bullish on this, especially in town. If I’m at a stop light and want to turn right, can turn right – I’ll wait until the light turns green to turn (unless there’s an arrow or it’s clear to my left) Why do I do this? Because I’m not in a hurry. Ever. I get out of bed in plenty of time to go places (I despise tardiness)

I’ve had this scenario many times: I’m at a red light, needing to turn right, turn signal on, car behind me also needing to turn right. There’s traffic coming from the left but not too much so I could aggressively navigate into it – I don’t. Why? NOT. IN. A. HURRY.

So what happens? Beep! Beep! Driver behind me hits the horn – they’re clearly in a hurry to get home and beat their kids or cheat on their spouses and my not turning right has shattered their idea that only they matter goddamnit so move out of the way!!!

Not only do I not turn, I wait a full second or two before turning after the light turns green. What happens next is always the same: Mad acceleration of the engine behind me, flash of metal coming on to my left, more horn honking – longer and more aggressive and then the birds 🖕🖕…. Oh those damn birds. I always just smile. Sometimes I blow a kiss.

You sound like someone who doesn’t understand music tbh. Like what you like, say something isn’t your cup of tea but to say Slipknot and Mudvayne are just bad is ignorance. To write off the genius and talent of a Joey Jordison, great song writing of both bands, amazing, Mudvayne’s bassist and drummer are PHENOMENAL musicians, period, end of story. Again, you don’t have to like but there’s no denying the abilities and talent of these musicians.

You don’t like their music, that doesn’t mean it’s bad music. How egocentric are you that just because you don’t like something means it’s inherently bad? Get over yourself. It’s either ignorance or a completely self-centered close mind that takes a stance like this.

Pointing out you literally think the world revolves around your opinion of something is way different than being offended. You just assume your opinion of subjective topic makes something absolute is just very egocentric. You’re the one being defensive about this. You don’t like Slipknot or Mudvayne. Sweet, you do you man.

It’s just like I HATE pop music, weather that’s pop country, pop rock etc… If it’s created for the sole intent of being a formula to be as stale and disposable as possible, I have no interest… doesn’t make it bad music. The people who wrote it are very talented at what they do. I just don’t like it…

The only one probably worth something was the Stones original Some Girls album. I had a copy of the original faces before they were sued and forced to blank them out. I saw some online at the time selling for about $800 or so.

$500, $800 is all about the same.

The radio stations around here didn’t play much but Top 40, so I never got exposed to actual rock music until way late. But a couple songs I heard here and there really stuck out to me…

He’s A Dream by Shandi Sinnamon (Flashdance Sountrack)
Slip Of The Lip by Ratt
Get It On by Kingdom Come
You Give Love A Bad Name by Bon Jovi
I’m The Man by Anthrax, which was particularly eye-opening.

Then I finally heard Metallica, and I knew I was getting on the right track. Yet, I never got super into Metallica because there comes a point in every Metallica person’s life when they cross paths with Megadeth, and they must pick a side. Megadeth did not click with me at first, but then all of a sudden I binge repeated This Was My Life, my biorhythms synched up and that was it. Megadeth it is as favorite band.

My wife said she read an article that said introverts prefer more aggressive music and extroverts like more laid back music. The theory was that extroverts vent all of their stress naturally and like to relax with music, whereas introverts need outlets like music to vent stress. They don’t do it naturally. There maybe some truth to that.

Like I have no problem with classical music. I will listen to it, but it stresses me out to listen to it for too long. It is just too slow. Whereas I can listen to Megadeth and be at total peace internally.

There are 3 types of Metallica fans

  1. Fringe fans who know just the hits.
  2. Never moved on fans. These are the ones that Metallica was enough for them and they never dug deeper into music.
  3. Then there’s the I use to listen to them more when I was younger (then it branches into the snobs vs just not my thing anymore but I still respect them)

I fit one of those molds. Metallica is weird to me. I like them. I have no issue with their success or consider them sellouts. Yet, I rarely actually listen to them.

When I do, I generally listen to Kill ‘Em All and Ride The Lightning.

Occasionally, I will check out some of their newer songs, like I listened to Spit Out The Bone for the first time recently.

I did listen to Lux AEternia. I thought James still sounds great, but I didn’t like the song much.

I will listen to all their releases and of course they were a gateway band into heavier stuff but I am no snob about it. I respect very much what they did for the genre and has accomplished just not really my thing anymore. If anything sometimes I go back and listen to Master of Puppets or …And Justice For All as they are my favorite records of theirs.

I did listen to Justice For All awhile back on YouTube. One of the remixes where they turn up the bass…

I still want to see Hetfield and Lars do something with Mustaine again. Mustaine said he and Hetfield were close to doing a project together about 10 years ago, but then things got stupid again with Lars about rights on No Life Til Leather.

Sometimes I use Justice for all to test speakers or headphones to see if they are too overly EQed… If the mix sounds full and has bass it angers me. Tells me the speakers are WAY incumbering on the original mix haha. If I listen to Justice I want shitty, treble mix damnit!

I am a relatively new Metallica fan, at 60 years old.
I listened to Hair Nation a lot when I had to commute, and really liked some of their songs, used google to find more.

Now I like Metallica.

I listen to mostly classic rock, but do like a wide variety of music.

I met Ellefson briefly once, too.

What is funny is that I ended up liking Megadeth before I even knew the bassist was from my backyard.

Ellefson is lucky he came across Mustaine. Mustaine oozes rock star charisma. I was in the same room with Mustaine once, and vibe oozing off that guy was different, to say the least. Alpha material definitely.

me and some teammates were walking from our “hotel” to town and i kept seeing the same cars passing us over and over and over and i was like wtheck is going on. the other teammates were like “they are cruising the looop”
had ZERO clue what that meant.

My hometown was in Hot Rod magazines top 100 cruising cities back in the early 80’s. At that time, the main street was 4 lanes for 2 miles. The last quarter mile was 2 lanes and the stopped at the A&W at the top of the hill on the west side of town. It was the old drive in style A&W where you ordered from a phone at the table. There was a drive in theater there at that time as well.

Fall of 96

I was a senior in high school and remember this well.

That prior April was my Junior Prom – and a day I’ll never forget. Started off well enough. Looked good in my tux. Mom’s Bronco washed and waxed and looking good. My date was just a friend, but a good one and the night was promising. Everyone in a good mood, pictures, laughing, great meal. Then we hit the dance floor. A little MC Hammer to get the crowd going, some ‘Ice Ice Baby’, some Journey (Faithfully – which still makes me cry) and then someone requested Metallica and ‘Enter Sandman’ blared thru the speakers and the crowd went wild. We started moshing. Chest bumping and shoulder slamming….

🎶’Dreams of War, Dreams of Liars, Dreams of Dragons Fire….🎶

Then I heard the screams.

The music stops cold and I hear moaning and I look down and my buddy Kory is on the floor. He’s blue and shaking. Eyes rolled back. Saliva pouring out of his mouth….

The rest of the night is a blur. I remember pushing past my high-school principal to get outside after they took him away in an ambulance (earning a 3 day in-school suspension) I remember getting on the interstate and the 45 minute drive to Lincoln felt like hours. I remember hearing the sound of Kory’s life-flight helicopter overhead as it took him to Bryan Memorial Hospital at 48th & A street here in Lincoln.

I remember walking with my buddy Shane and our dates – still clad in tuxes and ball gowns when we rounded the corner and saw Kory’s parents. Ken was in shock. Kathy was sobbing. Kory was gone.

He had a massive heart attack after using Crystal Meth.

That following Monday at school was a zoo. Reporters and news trucks everywhere. Locker searches. Drug sniffing dogs. Kids getting pulled out of class and interrogated. ‘48 Hours’ featured the OD on one of their episodes.

You mentioned good friends and big dreams. He was one and we had them.

Oasis was just getting their start at the time and ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory? was super popular. For months and months after you could drive around my little town and hear:

‘Where were you while we were getting high?’

When I was younger I ran around with a rough crowd. Not great members of society. Ruffians. Hoodlums. I was a loner. An outlaw lone-wolf looking for my pack. Walking down the street one day, practicing my scowl and muttering tuff-guy phrases to myself like ‘23 ski-doo’ and ‘put the loot in the bag or I socks ya in the breadbasket’, I hear the noise of my people. The war cry. The sound was undeniable. Bass shaking the concrete. They stopped the car they were riding in – Lincoln Continental, suicide doors. The back door swung open – an invitation to join the gang and meet my destiny – the music got louder as I got closer, pulling me in. I’m this now. A thug. A scoundrel. I threw my head back and laughed maniacally as the music washed over me and we sped away, leaving rubber on the pavement and this haunting sound bouncing off the town walls as we tore thru the city, menace on our minds…..

🎶’Baby shark doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo….’🎶

QOTD – Turner starts day 1 or at minimum has a lot of playing time.
At QB – since I believe in the merit system, JJ can start when he gives us the best chance to win the game (versus the other three).

Of course it is. BP tells politicians to do something and they’ll “donate” to their campaigns. Politicians require it, people/companies pay immense amounts of money for it, BP takes 30% of billions of profits and “donates” it back.

It’s precisely how these politicians can become multi-millionaires within 5 years when they make less/year than I do.

I will go off the reservation and say Turner starts week #3. He will play week #1, but a rookie needs some reps before you put him in cold.

JJ won’t and shouldn’t start until the Vikings have been eliminated from the playoffs, or Darnold is hurt, or the Vikings are 0-5, which pretty much means they have been eliminated from the playoffs.

Overall I’d say JJ starts around week#12

JJ – Week 1 2025. Any sooner than that means either he learns extremely quickly(Possible), or he is just better than Sam, and it becomes obvious.

Turner plays a lot right away, and probably starts week 1 this season.
