Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

Hey JROB! I hope this email finds you well. Its been a mild winter here in the Dakotas up until recently, now I fear the long dark embrace of winters death grip may be upon us with wind chills in the -40s possible. It may even be colder than the winter we faced at Valley Forge in the late 1700s and I doubt Lewis and Clark had to face anything this harsh. Looking forward to send you more emails, keep that inbox warm. With love.

JR, I also accidently hit the “follow button” next to someones user name in their post. I was getting flooded with email notices too. If you open the email message, it should say KFEY has a new post or something like that. To stop this, go to any KFEY post and right next to their name you see an icon that looks like a wireless connection icon. Scroll your mouse over that and click it to unfollow whoever you’re following.

Injuries are luck. Plays are plays. When our DB let Higgins out jump him for ball – unlucky, or bad play? When out DB let ball go right through his hands, hit him in head so could bounce up and Charger WR grab it for winning TD- unlucky or bad play?
You gotta make plays. We didn’t make enough. And then games when we did, we turned the ball over at a ridiculous rate.

When Mullens was getting sacked and laying across the D-lineman, and hr tried to toss the ball away, and the ball ended up in the defensive lineman’s lap, what do you think the chances of that happening are? I for one have never seen an “interception” like that in my life.

Balls that bounce off helmets for catches… yeah, seen that happen. Still think it was a lucky bounce though.

Our DB’s not being able to battle and break up catches? Yes, this is a weakness, not luck.

Every game every year there’s plays that go your way, some don’t. Was that really holding, etc.? I have never seen a play like the Ingrim swipe. But we had chances later to win and didn’t make the plays. Mullens fumble you mention, bat the ball away from Higgins and it doesn’t matter.
Turning the ball over is year end year out the number 1 determinant of W/L. We lead the league and that’s the reason for the record.
Now, injuries to Kirk, JJ and Hock, that’s bad luck.

The team was not great, but Cousins was. In the first three games he completed over 72% of his passes for 1,075 yards, and 9 TD’s. We all know we lost the first three games due to turnovers. Cousins was leading the league in passing TD’s and second in the league in passing yards when he got hurt. He averaged over 291 yards a game passing, and 2.25 TD’s per game this year.

HSIOW….

7 inches of wet, heavy snow in 2 rounds with a layer of ice in between: Conquered

Spare Bedrooms prepped: Air Mattresses filled (these things are better than the first few beds I owned as a young adult) Fresh sheets, blankets, pillows – all the comforts of home for these freeloaders.

3 Lasagne’s made and in the freezer, 2 pots of Chili (last one simmering now) a truckload of cold cuts and cheese prepped.

5 dozen cookies made – got the wife a KitchenAid stand up mixer for Christmas. I’ve used it a ton already. Awesome piece of kitchen equipment.

House Toddler-Proofed: Took down the fridge magnets, put away knick-knacks, safety covers on all the outlets.

House Sister-In-Law-Proofed:
Real wine glasses replaced with cheap plastic, detailed instructions on how to close cabinets and drawers diagrammed and laminated.

Found every stock ‘Thank You’ card that isn’t Christmas/Holiday related in the house to send out after the funeral, about 125 – should be more than enough.

Funeral home charging MIL $6k for the funeral service – that’s including $4800 for cremation. The remainder covers the lowest end luncheon package they had, which isn’t much – sandwiches and coffee basically. Service being done at the home, with their own Chaplain as well as a Lutheran pastor coming in. I’ve been asked to write an obituary, which I’m working on and struggling with. So my focus has been on what I can control right now – cooking, cleaning, prepping to host the majority of friends and family after the luncheon in our home.

All of the above is but a fraction compared to the work my wife has done. Coordinating flights (several times thanks to the recent issues with the Max 9’s), Calling family, also cooking (brownies and cupcakes), telling the funeral home GTFO when they recommended a $2500 receptacle to contain my FIL’s ashes, the majority of which will be spread along the Hana Highway on Maui next year (joke’s on them, Bill has a Kona Coffee can from the 1920’s he bought at swap meet in the 80’s specifically for this purpose, so we’ll just be taking the ashes in a plastic bag)

tl; dr….

death sucks, cut it

I farking hate funeral homes. When my MIL died, I saw first hand the guilt they heap on you if you choose the cheap pine casket for the body, then there is the rental of the coffin for viewing…she was also cremated as in your case and they gave us this spiel about having the body driven up to Billings, cremated, and ashes returned by the same guy “do you want your mother ashes to be transported by US mail?” so we paid to have the guy sit up there and wait, only the crematorium broke down so they had to mail the ashes anyway, and no there was no refund.

Body must be embalmed if there will be a viewing. Another face palm moment.

When my dad died we made darn sure the body went straight from the hospital to the crematorium do not pass go. They wanted to upsell the urn, so I carried them out in a plastic bag. Scattered them on the golf course where he loved to walk his dogs.

We’ll keep some of Bill’s ashes here (I’ve got a little glass jar from a dispensary trip that feels fitting) the majority we’ll spread in Hawaii, some in Western Nebraska as he was born near Gothenburg. The upsell from the funeral home isn’t as much a shock to me as it’s been for my Milly. I’ve been thru this and knew what to expect. Complicating things is my FIL died broke, no savings or any type of policy. Not even a burial policy. MIL isn’t wealthy either so wife and I are splitting the costs with my sister in law – thus all the cooking and prepping to have them stay. Also complicating things….. my in-laws, mainly because of my FIL, are basically hoarders. The house isn’t ’dead-cat’ filthy, but it’s packed with all sorts of HSN stuff. Luggage, CD’s, Kitchen Equipment, Tupperware, etc. Not to mention the $3k worth of MRE-style survival food my FIL bought as he was convinced of impending doom after the ‘24 election – many purchases like this is why he was broke.

Mother in law told me to have my pick of what I wanted. Lots of Milwaukee Tool Equipment. Weed trimmer, couple of saws, nice Toro snowblower. I have all the tools I need, but I think I could find buyers to pay a fair price and then just give her the cash. Milly is stubborn AF – when we go out to eat I often have to pay the bill in secret as she refuses to not pay and will legit make a scene, but she’s 70 and looking to retire in March. I’m thinking a few extra dollars wouldn’t hurt. We’ll see.

I honestly have no idea. I’m in Lincoln and Omaha most certainly has adequate facilities. No idea. The funeral home my MIL chose wasn’t highly rated – decisions made in haste, while grieving – and we didn’t know that until after the fact. Trying to make the best of it and be there as little as possible. When I inquired about bringing food (lasagna and chili) they said I’d need a food handler’s permit and immediately recommended a ‘hot lunch’ package. I said no problem, I have a food handler’s from serving at the mission – they weren’t expecting that.

I feel the same way. I’ve taken steps to try and prevent this very thing. I’ve got a burial policy from my time at the state, and there’ll be money to cover other expenses. I want to be cremated and for my wife to spread some ashes at Nest Lake in Spicer, MN and some more in downtown Leadville, CO (near where Doc Holliday shot a man over a $5 debt) the rest are hers to do whatever. No headstone. No service. She’ll not need a place to visit as I’ll be with her forever.

It would take the draft picks from the last two years becoming servicable … which if they did would make KAM the greatest GM ever.

Even with Hunter, they need another threat opposite of him. Wonnum was good, but they need a real difference maker, kinda like Z was.

CB Room – Murphy’s inury was very noticable the last 3 games. I like Blackmon and its only up for him. Evans was dogshit and Surly could cover NFL WR’s better.

S is about the only defensive postion set.

Re-signing all those guys would be to “appease” ticket holders and cross your finger sfor the playoffs.

A question about. this cap stuff (my lack of knowledge). As it does seem ass backwards from the way we did “business.”
For example, if this were business, I might have a “plan” for the QB position and it might be have Kirk for a couple more years and draft his replacement.
I would. then figure out how to pay for that and alternatives.
But, we wouldn’t start with the finances and then let that drive the planning thinking. It’s too restrictive.

Sometimes, in business, you have to file bankruptcy to survive.

The Vikings used all the available cap maneuvers to keep Cousins on the team the last few years, because they indeed wanted to remain competitive. The time is past for trying to continue, going deeper in debt though. The rebuild is on.

Well, bankruptcy was probably a little over the top. Belt tightening is more like it.

In your business, you had a budget. You could get business loans for growth, or when times were lean, but you always had to pay back the loans. The cap has mechanisms in it that are like business loans. Sooner or later though, you have to pay them off.

Re-signing Cousins, while still in the hole for $28.5M for him, only deepens the loan debt you have already accrued.

In business terms, what do you call that?

In business – I have a plan. And we are ALWAYS dealing with debt. I may kick debt, take on more, or pay down, BUT that decision does not drive the plan.

I would say in the NFL, it goes both ways. If you have players you like, you push the cap problem into the future.

If you are dealing with major cap issues, you start over to balance the budget.

JJ is under contract so other than signing bonus, the new money doesn’t hit until his current contract is complete. Give him enough of a signing bonus to make him happy and then a roster bonus or something that hits in 2025 and spreads out over 3-4 years.

For those of you too young to remember, the “Body Bag Game” was a Monday Night Football game that was played on November 12, 1990, between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins at Veterans Stadium. The Eagles defeated the Redskins, 28–14. Its nickname comes from a pre-game boast from Eagles head coach Buddy Ryan, who told reporters his team would inflict a beating on Washington so bad “they’ll have to be carted off in body bags”. Then during the game, nine Washington Redskins players left with injuries, and an Eagles player reacted to one of those injured Redskins by yelling, “Do you guys need any more body bags?”

Distasteful, disrespectful, and dishonorable conduct on the part of the Eagles.

Following the Body Bag Game, the Eagles won five of their last seven under Randall Cunningham, finished the season 10–6 and earned a wild card playoff berth, the fourth seed in the tough NFC. The Redskins meanwhile also won five of their last seven to finish the season 10–6, losing the number four seed to the Eagles. Despite this, the Redskins would return to Veterans Stadium and defeat the Eagles in the Wild Card playoff game, 20–6, in a game where the Washington defense physically punished the Eagles endlessly. The Redskins lost the following week, to defending Super Bowl champion San Francisco in the divisional round though. However, Redskins coach Joe Gibbs and others pointed to this game (Eagles defeat in the Wildcard game) as the foundation for the successes of the 1991 Redskins, who would go on to win Super Bowl XXVI.

A question for the GM/Cap experts.
Understand they did something last year to restructure Cousins some to lower his Cap hit. (I don’t understand how).
Even so though, if you go out and sign someone like Davenport for 13 mil did you just blow the whole savings on one move?

No longer New Vikings Fan

The Vikings (KAM) restructured Cousins deal in March 2023, changing his $20 million roster bonus to a signing bonus, and adding two additional void years to the two that were already on his deal.

At the time, the move not only made the team salary cap-compliant, but also pushed $16 million to those void years.

Not sure if that specific move made it possible to sign Davenport (he was signed on 27 March).

What do you think KAM/KOC will do at the QB position?

I think it depends entirely on how much of a discount, in terms of money and control, Kirk is willing to give.

If he is willing to do something in the neighborhood of 35 million a year with only 1 year guaranteed KAM will sign him….if not, he will take a QB in the 1st or 2nd and just roll with the rookie and Mullens.

If Kirk signs, he still may take a QB in the 1st or 2nd round.

My extensive GM experience has led me to this conclusion.

In the end, as Cousins said, it’s not as much about the money, as it is the structure. The money has to be enough to represent his worth for sure, but in the end, the guaranteed money and no trade clause are a big part of the equation. Cousins will never let a GM “own” him.

If seeing the truth about Cousins business dealings is considering hating, so be it.

Haters gonna hate… there is nothing you stated that makes rational sense. You’re just insisting Cousins is a liar because you hate him, and everyone can clearly see that.

Yeah basically this is my thinking too BUT I don’t know if that’s literally what I want to happen or if I really think I have any idea what the Kwesi-Train will do.

I don’t know if that’s what I want to happen either edge…
If Kirk leaves I will be conflicted….

What did that football coach say?

Kirk has been extremely durable and I hate myself for thinking it, but I just imagine giving him a big guaranteed contract (say 2 yr/80M/NTC) and he steps in the same hole Teddy did this summer at training camp and the Achilles goes POP. Prove me wrong, Kirko Chainz!

Actually, I was thinking the exact same thing. I just didn’t have the courage to say it.

He looks like the president of the evil fraternity in a Revenge of the Nerds-type film.

i will speak for you and the thousands of others who hate this pic as well..

i can’t tell if it’s just because he looks smug like he’s a GM who has “made it” and can look however he wants…

but i’m sure the real story for how he looks this way is he was just told one of his friends found out they were pregnant and he was mid “congrats”

What do you think KAM/KOC will do at the QB position?

Try and trade up for Jayden Daniels, and when that fails, trade down and either take someone shitty or re sign Kirko for way too much money.

Ben’ been asking hard questions lately.
since it’s not Tuesday, makes it a little hard.
But before answering, and I’m poor at this GM stuff, wonder if you can make a run in the playoffs if you have a 5th ranked offense and a 12 ranked defense.
Answer to that would drive my thinking of what to do at QB. It also would drive my thinking on what to do to make that happen.

I think the Kirko train has run off the tracks. KAM will have to bring in a new QB1 next year. He’ll let Cousins walk, just like Bruce Allen did. However he skins the cat though, the QB position will be weaker next year. Just is what it is.

You can’t ask this question and then complain that we talk about, you know who…..

I must not have been around the day it was decided either.

the solution for that is to be like me, and have no life other than work and once in a while golfing.

That way you will not miss anything around here.

KAM and KOC will probably bring back Kirk because the Wilfs like competitive rebuilds.

That’s been the Wilfs plan for 6 straight years.
Why not go for 7 straight years.

The Wilfs will be lost once Kirk is too old to lace them up. Kirk is as “competitive-rebuild” as a QB can get.
