Wow, what a great game last night. Penn State and Notre Dame had a back-and-forth battle that came down to a last-second field goal. Notted up at 24, Notre Dame kicked the game winner with 10 seconds left. A great matchup between the 6 and 7 seed, two teams that not many people expected to be in the semi-final. Congrats to Notre Dame and kudos to both teams for showing up big when the stakes are high (sideways glance at the Vikings).

The Vikings @ Rams wild card game has been relocated to Arizona due to the L.A. Wildfires, per Vikings.com. They also have a wild card game preview, and the Vikings @ Rams injury report.

Aaron Glenn of the Lions will be interviewing with 5 teams this week for their head coaching jobs, but he declined to interview with the Patriots, per Boston.com. Oh, you mean firing the head coach after one season might deter other coaches from wanting to coach there? Wow, @shocking@.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.

My expectations in today’s NFL matchups:

Chargers over the Texans, and Ravens over the Steelers.

Ohio St wins 28-14.
Buckeyes vs the Catholics for the championship.
B1G represented but no SEC.
Sounds good to me.

Texas vs The Ohio St in the Cotton bowl.
Winner to face The Catholics in the Championship Game.
I am a B1G guy so Ohio St, especially with Penn St going down yesterday.

That being said I spent a lot of time in Texas, Ft Hood and Ft Bliss. I can’t hate them so I will survive if they win.

Offered my son in Bismarck airfare and tickets to the game for his birthday in a few weeks. He declined as I knew he would as he is a Cowboy fan.

I did say that he and his wife were thinking of going to Dallas at Denver next year, maybe we could meet there.

Just wondering if I am doing some hard ass or wrong headed thinking.
First I feel for those folks in California and their losses. Looks like pure hell watching TV.
Yet, listening to the news, the state did little to prepare for this. Didn’t cut back brush and clean up forests. didn’t build reservoirs to collect water and the list goes on and on.
And today the CA Legislature is meeting to allocate $25 million to “prepare for Trump presidency.”
Now, for all this mismanagement and misuse of resources, all the rest of “us” citizens are (will) being asked to pay for this mess.
This just doesn’t strike me as right.

I didn’t pay off my house there because the lender (CalVet) coordinated for the insurance at a discount.
If I had paid off the mortgage I would have had to find my own and it would have cost a lot more.
Originally I was going to pay it off early but the insurance situation changed all that. The difference in insurance was much more than the interest on the loan at that point.

Not on the rookie contract. Fifth year option is average of the 3rd through 25th average salaries at their position over the past five seasons.

We should do a poll, how many people are okay with drafting a QB at #10 and not have him play at least half of his rookie contract? I personally get Ponder vibes if he does not start by the halfway mark of the (2025) season.

I’ve never minded the actual dentist part, my teeth are quite healthy after excessive forays into sugar in my youth, but I always detest the x-rays. Stupid gougers. They never show anything. The worst part is they hurt, thanks to my massive mandibular tori. At least the modern plastic digital bite films are far less painful and traumatic than the old cardboard bite wings. My concern (versus the short term discomfort) is the ridiculous amount of x-rays they want. Let’s do a set of x-rays twice a year on everybody from when they’re 4 years old, and everybody gets full body x-rays at the airport, etc. etc. And then we wonder why everybody has thyroid issues or cancer rates are increasing exponentially… hmmmm.

Nah, that doesn’t bother me, they are something like 0.001 mSv, that’s the same as walking outside for twenty minutes or so. and the whole body backscatter scanners at the airport are about half that.

As a radiation worker, my allowable annual exposure is 50 mSv/yr. I certainly am not about to refuse the whole body scan given the hassle that would entail over such a miniscule exposure.

Judge Juan Merchan sentenced Trump to an unconditional discharge, which means the president-elect will have a conviction on his record, but he will not face jail time or any other punishment.

Merchan told the court that unconditional discharge is “the only lawful sentence, without encroaching upon the highest office in the land.”

He then told the president-elect, “I wish you godspeed as you assume your second term in office.”

Really disturbing judicial effort here. Complete and utter political witch hunt, meant to prevent Trump from being elected. If they want to keep a good narrative (for them) Biden should pardon him. That way Biden can say he is doing what is best for the country and Trump can’t appeal a verdict that he’s been pardoned for.

This ruling was not on the merits of the case but on blocking the sentencing only.

That is why the other 3 conservative judges ‘invited’ an appeal on the merits of the case.
The case was so broken that it will be overturned but it had to be completed before that process could begin, that includes sentencing.

I saw some scuttlebutt that the NFL is considering a change to the onside kick. A team would get one chance to convert a 4th and 20. If they do, they retain possession of the ball.

This is intriguing, certainly better than the current onside kick, which was ruined by the new kickoff rules.

The main problem with the 4th and 20 idea is that it favors elite offenses.

They certainly do. Illegal contact couldn’t possible be more vague – 5 yards is sometimes 2 and at other times 15.
And half the offensive tackles beat the snap count by a second, no call.
On and on.

Illegal contact, defensive holding and pass interference are my least favorite penalties. They are too catastrophic for the defense.

3rd and forever? Doesn’t matter. Defensive holding. Five yards and first down…

Yet, at the same time, I understand why these penalties need to be called. The problem is they can be absolute game breakers. Defense can play an amazing game, but oops…defender got there a bit too early on a 60-yard throw. First down at the goal line. Sorry. Game over.
