Well, I was sure hoping that we’d get to play the fight song today, but nope. The Vikings offense decided to mostly take the 2nd half off. They used the second half to perfect their three-and-out approach. That way, when they need a three-and-out, they’ll be really good at it, it shouldn’t be a problem. Kirk turned the ball over three times in the first half, one of those coming on an interception at the goal line, which you do NOT want to do. The offense showed off their playmakers, but then decided to stop using them. I don’t have the stats in front of me, but I’m pretty sure JJ only got a couple of balls in the second half. Then again, when the offense never has the ball, it’s hard to throw to him.
The defense, in my opinion, looked much better than last year’s abysmal excuse for a defense. They weren’t perfect, but they were aggressive, they forced their opponent into mistakes, and they did a pretty good job. The offense turned the ball over three times in the first half, and the score was tied at the half. That’s the defense doing their jobs.
I’m still excited for this season, I think this team will be able to make some noise. Let’s hope some of the mistakes we saw are due to rust and guys just getting back into the groove. One of the announcers actually said, I thought it was funny. Uhhhh, hey Gordo, you only get 17 games and they all count. You kinda want to get into the groove PRIOR to the regular season games. That’s why they have preseason and training camp & all that jazz.

Let’s talk about the defense. I’m always disappointed when the Vikings lose, but I came away from that game feeling good about our defense. I like Flores’ approach with the defense, it’s a breath of fresh air after breathing stagnant farts for a year under Donatell. Hell, 20th in the league would be a massive improvement, and it looks like they could do that or better this year. Let’s hope so!

Pretty similar teams…good defenses and big play QB’s, more Allen than Rodgers. Jets defense is better so Allen & company may struggle but I feel like they can get it going. I’m not sold Rodgers still has it so we’ll know immediately if he does. Imagine if he struggles, they lose, the Packers faithful will be crowing all week. Man this year is starting off rough, Lions & Packer fans full of themselves.
At times here I read bout folks here struggling with their golf games. A small suggestion/challenge you might try.
Play with only 4 clubs – a 5 or 7 wood (your preference). an 8 iron, a SW and a putter.
You might be surprised what you actually shoot and have more fun.
I highlighted my Sunday round on the thread before the gameday thread, but I don’t think anyone saw it. The highlight of the round was my wedges. I was so “on” it was crazy. I hit a pitching wedge from 92 yards that landed center of the cup, two inches to the left. Almost flew it into the hole.
The bad news was, the course was almost unplayable. Standing water everywhere, and the holes were all playing longer than on the scorecard. Tees were back on every hole for some reason. I couldn’t reach three of the four par three’s off the tee. I did par two of them though.
First hole was playing very long. On the card it was 458 (par 5) but it was 490 with the tees back and I decided to just hit 3 wood anyway. Only hit it 160 as it splashed into casual water. From 333 out, I hit a 7 wood that landed and plugged at 155. Hit another 7 wood that landed about 10 yards short of the green. Pitched the ball beautifully to about 8 feet but the greens were terrible. They had been aerated and were bumpy and slow and I hit a putt that didn’t make it to the hole. Made bogey though so wasn’t mad. I did lose two balls in the water over the course of the day, and shot 45-47. I was exhausted by the 15th hole and gutted it out the last 3 holes. 17 was a 198 yard par three over water. I was in bad shape by then and hit a 5 wood surprisingly well, that ended up in the right rough a little short. Made a so-so pitch and got that up and down, and went to the 18th hole which was a 505 yard par five dogleg left. I was so tired and just like “please God let me live through this hole”. Hit a driver into the trees, hit a pitch out with a 5 iron (badly), hit a seven wood (badly) hit another bad seven wood, then hit a wedge to about 15 feet. Missed the putt, and finished with a double.

I probably hit 8 wedge shots between 95 and 80 yards and hit them all really well. I think the fact that the ground was so saturated, I was really focused on clean contact and barely taking a divot, and that resulted in some really top shelf shots. Also, the greens were soft so I was trying to hit the ball all the way to the pins.
That’s solid wedge play for any handicap level.
Honestly, I love hitting wedges. I was badly hurt in an incident in Afghanistan and for a year I was rehabbing. I spent most of that year hitting very smooth, relaxed wedges that put no stress on my back. Just swinging the club up to my waist height and then moving through the ball, letting the club do all the work. I started hitting very solid pitches into a net in my backyard.
When I eventually returned to playing some limited golf, my iron play improved dramatically, but I have never been able to hit the ball hard since.
That’s a hell of a round on a course in that condition. Lift clean and place sounds great but you get no roll out which is a big detriment.
The struggle on the last hole is a real thing. It has been a bugaboo for me as of late. More mentally than physically I feel fine just in my head I will double or worse.
Thank you. On that 18th tee I have to say I thought about just driving in and calling it a day. I probably should have because I was seeing stars. Men are stupid though.

From an ease of protection perspective, they actually work best. It’s far easier for an O-line to set, and protect a pocket passer than a mobile QB.

I agree, but as I said, the O-line has the best chance to be successful protecting the QB when they know where he is.
When RGIII joined the Redskins, the commentary was his mobility would “immediately make the O-line better”. The O-line later revealed they hated trying to block for Griffin because he never set up where he was supposed to, and they never knew where he was behind them. He actually made them look worse.
Easier for pass rushers to when they know where he’ll be and that he won’t be moving

There wasn’t one, and sometimes you don’t see the blitz coming. The safety is turned to the outside looking at the receiver pre-snap. Cousins isn’t seeing him as a possible blitzer, and this is one of those “un-scouted looks” that KOC talked about in the post game presser. The safety spins off the snap to rush Cousins, and there is no “hot” receiver to throw to as mentioned in the video. Yet they insist Cousins has to “see” this and do what? Spring wings and fly away? He’s stuck and still trying to hit the crosser as the pocket collapses around him.
Good points. Everyone seems to have 20/20 vision when the play is over. I am stunned in KOC’s system, there is no hot receiver.

I spent years getting my swing built to deliver the club so it bottoms out after striking the golf ball. It may be one reason I have never really hit my driver well. I hit my 3 wood pretty well off the tee, but not really very long. I don’t care to go through all the paces to teach myself how to swing a driver or get fit for one, or whatever. Too much trouble just to play a game for recreation.
The Driver is the limits of human projectile launching of a golf ball. Its such a long club with a rounded face and about 20 controllable variables effecting ball flight. There’s a reason why guys like Speith and tour guys average 65-70% fairways hit with their drivers. That’s 3 to 4 times out of 10 drives they miss the fairway. It’s freaking hard for everyone.
Yep. I guess knowing that I might hit one out of five drives in the fairway and decently long, makes me decide to not play a club with a 20% success rate. I hit the 3 wood much more solidly and accurately off the tee than a driver. Who wants to hit bad shots? Not me.
Yeah my best scores lately have been with the Driver not coming out of the bag. For the average amateur fairway finding is about 30-40%. I’ve had days where I hit 10 out of 12 and had a stretch for about a month where I was stroking it. But it left and now 1 out of 3 is staying in play.
My Driver finds the fairway an awful lot these days…it just doesn’t go very far. My driver = your 3 wood.
Play with a driver that has enough loft and at a shorter length that you can regularly put in fairway. If it’s 12 degrees at 43.5 so be it. Still better than 3 wood.
I did cut my driver down from 45.5 or 44.5 and it was a big difference. I think I have the loft turned down from 10 to 9.25. Maybe I should put the loft back up. Was trying to reduce spin which lowering the loft did. I probably don’t generate enough clubhead speed for that loft though.
Loft is always your friend. Won’t go as far but sidespin is an absolute killer. Still, a higher lofted driver will still go further than a 3 wood.
I’ll adjust it back up to 10 and see how it does. I was hitting my 3 wood so good sometime farther than my average drives of 225 but I never get the 250+ I can get out of my driver when I hit it on the screws.
Be careful with adjustable driver heads. Turn the loft up and the face angle closes (and vice versa).
You have connections. Buy a used 12 degree and cut it down. Have it hotmelted to get SW back up.Believe you’ll beat your 3 wood and be closer to old driver length.
That’s why HC’ers should play with a lot of loft on driver and shorten the shaft.

I am compelled to say this after watching yesterday’s game. I think KOC is failing to get the most out of this offense. He expects the WR’s to read the defense and adjust their routes on the fly, and he expects Cousins to read his receivers minds and get the ball to them. This is a bad plan. Cousins drops back, not knowing where his receivers are going. I don’t think this is helpful.
That is an assumption from your own mind. You nor I know what KOC is expecting or telling his players how to run the offense.
I know KOC play calls were shit 50% of the time yesterday. That is a known factor.

Actually KFEY those are the words from the receivers mouths. They mentioned it last year, and this year in training camp that the offense is hard on them because they are expected to read the defense and alter their routes.

So they are option routes or something different than that?
No, because an option route is basically a choice between going right or left. Here the routes can be cut short, go longer, or go right or left. On an option route you play off the leverage you’re getting. In KOC’s offense you’re seeing where the linebackers and safeties are, not just the CB covering you.
Right option plays typically are structured so the QB and WR can choose the right action based on man vs. zone but I thought they were mostly run out of the slot.
