Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

I know it’s Thursday, but I’ve been out of the loop for a couple of days. A billion thanks to Surly for covering….again.

Vikings vs. Bears

I would think that most Vikings fans are satisfied with the results of the Monday Night Football game against the Bears. It’s not easy to get a win in Chicago, regardless of how good the Bears happen to be when you play there. The offense was sluggish through the first three quarters, but the defense kept the game within reach, and the offense took over in the fourth quarter and put the game away. Kevin O’Connell called an amazing game, made the right adjustments, and helped the team turn the game around. Brian Flores had the defense firing on all 8 for most of the game and they got stops when the offense needed them in order to complete the comeback. The Bears are a better team than they were last year.

J.J. McCarthy

J.J. McCarthy proved a ton on Monday. He faced adversity as the offense failed to produce much of anything, and instead of crumbling after throwing a pick-six, that is when he rebounded and led the offense down the field for three touchdown drives in the fourth quarter. It showed tremendous grit and the ability to bounce back after struggling early. I love how McCarthy moved within the pocket, always moving up in the pocket and seeming to sense the pressure before it arrived, and decisive when making the decision to pull it and run. The TD throw to Jefferson in the end zone was an almost perfect throw in a very tight and fast-moving window. McCarthy shifted slightly to the right, avoided the penetration by the defense, and delivered a strike. He shifted before the pressure arrived, seeming to sense it developing, very impressive.

Vikings Backfield

The running back duo of Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason is lethal, this is the best backfield this team has had since the days of Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor. I love how Mason runs the ball, getting the tough yards and always getting an extra yard or two at the end of every run. Jones is still a gifted ball carrier, and is a threat to go long any time he touches the ball. They didn’t dominate the game, but the Bears defense is a pretty good defense.

Vikings O-Line

The revamped offensive line didn’t look very formidable during the first couple quarters, the Bears were able to apply a lot of pressure, and there few running lanes for the running backs. They got it figured out, and eventually set the tone for the offense, as it always starts in the trenches. Donovan Jackson is the real deal, and the new additions from Indianapolis both looked good, especially later in the game.

Other Notable Performances

Some other guys who stood out on Monday are Erik Wilson and Miles Price. Wilson came in after Cashman went out with an injury, Wilson came in and racked up 3 solo tackles, including a huge stop to force fourth down, and added a blocked punt. Price was a monster in the return game all night, he looks like a solid addition. Price finished with 4 punt returns for 68 yards, an average of 17 yds/return, and 2 kick returns for 49 yards, and average of 24.5 yds/return, per ESPN. Hargrave got two sacks and Jonathan Allen disrupted the backfield and helped the Vikings keep the Bears running game mostly in check. With the exception of the first drive, the defense was stout.

Knee-Jerk Thoughts From Around the NFL
  • The Bears are an improved team
  • The Lions are NOT an improved team, losing their coordinators hurt them a lot
  • I don’t think the Packers looked that tough
  • The Chiefs are not as strong as they were
  • The Ravens and Bills are both still very good teams
  • The Steelers are much better with Aaron Rodgers
  • The Broncos defense is stout, their offense is not
  • The Vikings made the right move in going from Sam Darnold to J.J. McCarthy

Vikings and NFL News

From Vikings.com, the initial Vikings vs. Falcons injury report. Also, J.J. McCarthy was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Stats from the Vikings-Bears Monday Night Football game, courtesy of ESPN.

The 49ers injury luck from last year seems to be carrying over into 2025, Brock Purdy is a long-shot to play next Sunday against the Saints, per NFL.com. George Kittle suffered a hamstring injury on Sunday and will be out for at least a few weeks, per PFN. Luckily, their next game is against the Saints and the 49ers can likely win without the two star players.

Media Selection

Some interesting commentary here. I agree, anytime they try to shout down conversation, they’re hiding something.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics to a minimum. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be respectful and civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument, not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW language/pictures to a minimum. We don’t want anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • To summarize, behave like adults. Treat each other with respect, and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something, please do. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.
  • Twitter sized version: Be cool to one another.

Very very minor fractures are hard to see on XRays, just ask MT. But a trauma like a dislocation and subsequent approximation definitely can present like this (pain and swelling)

That’s a good idea. Ice the area 20 minutes at a time 3x/day, protect from movement and strain for a week and see how it goes. If they find a fracture, follow their instructions.

Sometimes out of frustration or even the helplines we can’t do. something about an event we lash out
Does it really matter if Kirk was wearing a vest, or what type?
Does it matter if the shooter was a good shot or not?
Does it matter if he was a so called professional or not?
Charlie Kirk was a. fine American and he is dead and the answer to the three preceding questions matters little.

Saying or insinuating this was something bigger than a whack job is detrimental. Trying to make it sound bigger than it was and creating conspiracy theories absolutely changes the focus. It was somebody with a mental health issue of one kind or another. That is the enemy, not some mysterious deep state, or the CIA, or whatever other crap is already getting spread. Trying to say this had to be a professional absolutely redirects the conversation where it doesn’t need to go. A great human being was taken because somebody disagreed with him and the country has been told that words are violence so violence in response to words you don’t like is acceptable. That is what needs to stop. Disagree civilly, as Mr. Kirk tried to do, but you don’t get to kill somebody because they disagree with you and their voice is too big.

I will take it personal any time anybody calls me a liar, unqualified or incompetent and he loves doing that to everybody to make him feel better about himself and he does it every time he disagrees with somebody and they have facts to back their argument. If others want to accept it as the ramblings of an old man, that’s fine, but I won’t.

Perhaps some times, on very special days, we rise above petty differences. And this might just be such a day.
Now you may disagree – obviously by your actions – and that’s your right, so let’s forget the disagree civilly bologna.
As an aside, is he an old man? Are you a young man? What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Talk about an A 1 cheap shot!

The government already won. They have the tech and weapons to put down any resistance. Things like the 1980s “Red Dawn” are just fantasy.

So now we have to hope our owners are benevolent.

As for left/right drama, that is just a distraction. Bread and circus. Keep the people from seeing what is going on.

Honestly, I could probably sit you down at the range and with a scope, you could hit a chest sized target at least 2 out of 3 times with your first 3 shots. At 200 yards, I can shoot a 1 inch group, easily. We used to put old casings up at 200 yards and shoot them. When that got boring, I put a thumb tack up and it took me 2 shots to hit it.

It depends on the setup. If the rifle already has good optics and is sighted in to that exact range already, and there is minimal cross wind with a clear line of sight, all you would have to do is put the crosshairs on target and manage to stay relaxed enough to hold on target and squeeze the trigger. Its shocking how easy it is if your setup is done properly. Now knowing how to sight that in etc. etc. is what takes time and knowledge to learn.

Not hard with a high powered rifle with a decent scope. I am no expert, and not good at non-video game shooting, but I could hit a small target at 200 yards with a 30-06 Remington bolt action that was used for deer hunting as a teenager.

So, an expert shooter would have no issues with that shot.

There are plenty of folks who could “pull off” that shot, except for this. The exact target zone is about 3 inches wide at 200 yards. Yeah, not a lot of folks can pull that off in a crowd of people. The awning Kirk was under, took a head shot away, and he wore a bulletproof vest under his shirt. The only target zone available was the neck. The round actually ricocheted off the top of his vest into his neck BTW. This was someone accustomed to shooting at a small target from distance, and not bothered by all the surroundings. It wasn’t some guy who can hit a deer from 200 yards. It was a guy who could hit a 3 inch target from 200 yards with a single shot.

Depends on the vest. My guess is he was wearing a vest similar to a typical law enforcement vest so the vest wouldn’t matter. Unless you’re wearing a military level vest with ceramic plates, they aren’t rated for rifle rounds. I think the shooter just aimed center mass and missed high because he didn’t account for 100 foot drop (or so, guessing from Google Earth).

If he was wearing a vest with plates rated for a rifle round, you would see it under his shirt. I’ve worn a normal vest, a lot. That is not a guess. Nobody shoots for the neck. It was either a head shot missed (unlikely) or a high center mass shot. It would be very likely without a range finder that an untrained or poorly trained shooter would overestimate the range and hold high.

No, I’m saying your premise that his neck was the target is most likely inaccurate. That may be where he was hit, but that doesn’t make it the target. Was Trump’s ear the target since that’s where he was hit? If so, that dude is one hell of a shot with that cheap setup he had in that case. If you’re going to aim for a smaller target than center mass, then you’d aim at the face, not the neck, at least a civilian would. If he was wearing a level IV vest, it would be much more visible under his t-shirt. What makes the most sense is that he wears a level II soft vest to protect against hand gun rounds from the crowd. Even a level III would not stop a 30-06.

Second, believe we are going to beat the snot out of the Falcons.
Third, and I guess this is a little political but today is kind of a special day.
NLV enclosed an interesting statement from a state representative below.
It reminded me on something John Kennedy said many years ago when running for President.
It went something like this — ‘There is really little difference between Democrats and Republicans. We both want you to have a good job, nice home and car, and good schools, etc. But the difference is HOW we get to those aspirations.’
The problem today in my opinion it’s not just the HOW nowadays, but the actual end goals and aspirations is very different. In fact, light years apart.

Just when the a student was asking about Trans Shooters to Charlie?
Was the ‘nut job’ who said ‘I did it’ and ‘I have the right to remain silent’ right after the shooting providing a distraction so the shooter could escape??
Still lots and lots of questions to be answered.

I have to say this reeks of the JFK assassination, where the rifle was recovered immediately after the shooting… so convenient. Paint me skeptical on this. No assassin leaves his weapon behind to be discovered after the fact. This was too well planned and executed for that kind of ridiculous act. Wrapped in a towel? Left in a wooded area? I smell a rat.

Well if the shell casings really had ”anti racist’ and pro ‘trans’ messaging on them then they were meant to be found.
No point if writing a message and then not leaving it to be found.

If you want to throw the dogs off the scent… this is exactly how you would do it. Push focus, blame, narrative, motive, etc to some ideological nutbag, rather than true political forces eliminating the threat.

How CNN covered it:

Federal officials probe rifle and ammo scrawled with cultural phrases after Charlie Kirk killing

A range of phrases related to cultural issues were found scrawled on a rifle and ammunition found in the woods near where conservative activist Charlie Kirk was murdered on Wednesday, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation.

Authorities are analyzing those messages as they seek to identify a suspect in the killing, sources said, but it’s not yet clear if they point to a motivation in the attack. Among the markings were initials that authorities are seeking to match with suspect profiles, one source said.

Robert Bohls, the FBI special agent in charge of the bureau’s Salt Lake City office, said at a news conference this morning that agents recovered “a high-powered bolt action rifle” in “a wooded area where the shooter had fled.” The FBI laboratory will analyze the weapon, Bohls said.

I read here yesterday that folks were happy that political postings were absent early in the day. I post many things I am concerned about, and I feel others should be aware of. I probably have gone overboard with that. I apologize for my insensitivities. I will keep that in check moving forward.

That said, I read this, and it perfectly captures what I feel, and so I’m posting it. I cannot express it any better. God bless Charlie Kirk, and all that he believed in and professed.

OK here goes. Yesterday was my 75th birthday. My daughter called and said well Dad you made three quarters of a century (ha ha).
The real story – no secret I love playing golf. But after a serious of injuries I had to give it up when I was 65. Tried for a while a couple of times, but just too much pain.
Now forward, this spring was watching the Masters, standing there swinging my arms a little bit. So my wife says, you really need to find a way to play again, you love it.
Next day made up my mind I was going to shoot my age on my birthday. Started slowly mobility exercises and just pitches and putting. Over the summer more longer game, playing holes and was getting into it – and starting to shoot well again. In fact thought I was ready and could do it.
But, three weeks ago was out of town animal sitting. Couldn’t play golf and bigger problem changed my exercise program and rehurt my shoulder. Came back and played some and it hurt a fair amount and I realized no way I can play 18 holes like this.
So, changed the goal 37 or better in nine I win, 38 is a tie and 39 I lose.
Went out yesterday to give it a go. But strange ending. Was 2 under threw eight in the middle of the fairway on nine, and the skies opened up and just washed the course out.
Thus, unfinished for now but maybe a blessing. I’ll wait a few weeks and give the 75 round a go.
But the real blessing is, I’m back on the course doing something I love to do. So it was a great birthday.
And then I come home and see the news about Kirk, thinking about that poor girl in NC, and 9/11. my happiness was dashed some.
That’s the NDR update. Overall, feel very blessed.
And reminded we are Americans and we will prevail no matter what.

Thank you for sharing this JR. Warmed my heart to hear about how you were able to pursue your goal, and do what you loved on your birthday. Living pretty close to you, I know all about thunderstorms on a golf course in Florida. I will never be 2 under after 8 holes, and playing the ninth like you. So I’ll just live vicariously through your golfing adventures.

Thank you again for sharing. Love our exchanges here, whether we agree or disagree on things. You are a fine gentleman.

And you are definitely a gracious gentleman. Never found you to be anything but.

What an awesome story! Congrats being able to return to something you love, and are obviously quite good at!

This past weekend I just played with my 85 year old uncle – he still loves the game, plays from the forward tees and generally shoots in the upper 40s (9 holes). He played 18 with me which is a bit of a stretch for him – usually just 9 holes per week but he loves it.

That’s why I want to retire next year at age 60 so I get hopefully 10 good years of being able to golf 18 holes 3 or 4 days a week.

I know eventually I will not be able to do that.

I started hitting the max on the 401k contribution at age 23….I knew this job I had was not a sure thing forever so thought might as well save up.

I never made gouger type money, but I lived on a middle income salary for the last 36 years – maybe upper middle class the last 10 years.. Now I can retire at age 60 on a comfortable middle income revenue stream.

Yes, start young.

The good news for me is, as an empty nester with no debt except the mortgage, we have been able to ramp up the savings and extra house payments. We both drive 10 year old cars with no payments, and I have not taken a vacation in almost two years. Being frugal now is paying off, and it is possible I would be able to retire at 70 or even 67. All depends on the mortgage. Once the home is completely paid off, the math changes.

I am still doing fun things. Golf is not cheap, and I am going to the Bengals game and maybe another. We are both focused on paying things off quickly while still having some fun.

Your comment is interesting. Obviously I’m old, but when I was growing up most everyone lived to pay their mortgage off and retire. To my parents and grandparents this was a huge achievement and even a sort of sign they had lived a responsible life.

Yeah, I did get a late start. Both in my career that I started in my 30s, and saving towards retirement.

I am doing way better than I thought I would be 10 years ago. I still feel behind schedule, but things are moving the right way pretty quickly.

In a pinch, we could always downsize, but my wife wants to stay in this house.

We paid off our mortgage back in 2018. It makes a huge difference in the amount we can save. We still have one car payment. I was hoping to have that paid off, but my wife keeps hitting deer. My plan is to have that paid off this coming spring.
