VIKINGS NEWS – Stephon Gilmore is visiting the Vikings today. If he can still play, I hope they do not let him leave. Defense, especially the secondary, needs help and depth.
NFL News – FTP! I watched a bit of a few other games over the weekend. I think all the rookie QBs played pretty well, except Maye. I also saw some very bad football played by people that will be looking for work in 2 weeks.

🔨’s thoughts on preseason game 1…..
Liked what I saw from Darnold in his lone drive. Moved the ball downfield. Needed to finish with a score.
Defense by design didn’t show much as it’s preseason but the poor tackling stood out. Hoping it was guys making business decisions and the effort and intensity ramps up quickly. Even without a stud DT I think our front 7 will be tough. Serious concerns about our cornerback play.
Dallas Turner will be a factor – the dip move he made to get underneath the tackle on his sack was smooth – his athleticism is ridiculous. Excited to see Flores use packages featuring Turner, Greenard & Van Ginkel at the same time.
Was impressed with Bo Richter. He feels like this year’s UDFA gem. Hope he can crack the roster.
Speedy Nailor is WR3, but don’t sleep on Trishton Jackson. Jets said during the broadcast that the Vikes had the best WR room in the league. Thought both Jackson and Nailor looked good.
About as good a debut from McCarthy as you could want imo. Faced some early adversity, bounced back with a few nice scrambles and engineered some scoring drives. The pick was a learning experience, same situation next time and he puts the ball out toward the sideline and lets his guy make play. Thought he bounced back nicely.

The European Union (EU) threatened to take action against Elon Musk’s company, X, concerning an upcoming interview between Musk and Donald Trump, UK Commissioner Thierry Breton announced on Monday.

Lots of variables in pre-season, all we can do is watch.
I probably watch completely different things than most fans, when I watch QB play. I’m looking at ball security, footwork, processing, progressions, arm angles, launch angles, etc. None of which the average Joe looks for.

One thing I noticed when watching JJM in the preseason game, he was not just staring down a receiver, but making his progressions.
Ummm not really. McCarthy dropped back 19 times. He threw 17 passes and scrambled twice. All but three passes went to his first read, and he only completed one pass to anyone who was not his first read.
If 1st read is open toss it.
Absolutely, but QB’s will also try and stuff a ball into their first read, even if they’re well covered, instead of going through progressions, because on average they only have 2.5 seconds to make reads and get rid of the ball.
If one of the D Lineman was coming after me I would do whatever I could to get rid of it as soon as I could.
With our O-line even more so.
Yep… it’s MUCH harder to be a pocket passer than a running QB.
If you’re completing to your first read the second read is irrelevant.

I’m just stating the facts Bow… don’t get your knickers in a twist. Most NFL QB’s throw to their first read. A few have the patience (and courage) to stand in the pocket, go through progressions, and get hit in the mouth while delivering the ball.
Just the nature of the game.

Why does it all of sudden matter if it’s a first, second, or third read?
It doesn’t matter, but the statement was he was “he was not just staring down a receiver, but making his progressions.” He really only did that a couple times, but mostly he latched on to his first read and threw to it. Just being accurate. That’s all.
He wasn’t staring down receivers from what I saw. He either got it out quick to his first read or he was scanning the field. He did run a couple times, but I don’t think it was because he only looked at his first read. He moved well in the pocket to avoid sacks while looking down field, and even connected on a couple.
I don’t think he completed any passes while scrambling. “Staring down a receiver” is just a term. I think he did a good job getting the ballout for the most part. Some of his throws while scrambling were atrocious, but when he set up and threw the ball from the pocket, he was very strong.

The Escrow on my old Cali house closed on the 11 of Jun.
Friday the 9th of Aug the remodel/upgrades/modernizing were complete and it was listed for sale.
They had a 12 man crew standing by to do the work, impressive how fast it got done.
Gutted the old place carpet/walls/etc and made lots of changes.
I called and congratulated the realtor/contractor wife/husband team, very efficient.
That is impressive.

They did ask me ‘how soon they could get in and start’.

I’m skimming through a book called “The Second American Revolution” by John W Whitehead. Included in the book are political cartoons by Wayne Stayskal. There is one that shows a mugger with a gun in his hand walking off with a couples money as they stand there with their hands up in the air. The wife says to the husband, “Well, all wasn’t lost….I got him to sign my gun control petition.” I’m not sure how left leaning the Chicago Tribune was in 1980, but that is the paper the cartoon was originally published in.
Best part of this was when a Waltz ad popped up in the middle.

Same. He was in the Reserves for 24 years, so he served. I will give him his due for that. But he didn’t deploy as he has proclaimed, was never armed in combat, and did not retire as a Sergeant Major as he claimed. He embellished his service record for political gain.
I accept that politicians will stretch the truth, but this is dishonorable. Those who have served, take honor very seriously.
I served as a 1SG, but I never held the rank.
I was a temp while ours was out sick for 3 months.
And then again when I was in a Detachment that the 1SG position was filled by a SFC.
When people ask I say ‘I got to work as a 1SG’, and that was my career peak. I never claimed I was a 1SG as I never held the rank but I did get to do the job.
I also never served in a War Zone, Served in Berlin which was an ‘Army of Occupation’, and I POMed to go to Iraq but they canceled our deployment. I never want to claim what I didn’t earn, disrespectful of those that did earn it.

Couple of questions. I was RA but it was a long time ago and rank must be different for NG. Listening to this guy some it seems different than RA from. my days. If you were a MSG you would have had to go to various schools ‘before’ you were promoted to SGM. And a SGM was different than a CSGM.
Second, and perhaps Marines are different than Army. Knew a guy that was SGM in Marine Corp and was selected for OCS. Became a Captain and retired at 26 years. Because he lacked time in grade for retirement pay etc he was an E – 9, but could be called Captain (ret). Maybe MC is different ?
Yes, the Guard promotion system is different from the RA. Basically, when a position opens up, you can be hired into it if you meet time in grade requirements. Not like RA where you’re selected in competition with your peers, and promoted on merit.
Still have to meet the requirements (schools) to put on the rank. Waltz wasn’t interested in doing the work required to put on the chevrons, apparently (my personal take, only).
I do believe he had to go to some type of training for the promotion, I am not sure what or where, but I do remember another MSG in the guards saying that nobody retires right after the training like Walz did. Again, I am going off memory and may be wrong.
In the video he says the promotion was contingent on him completing training and then serving another 2 years after that.
Yes, the Army Sergeants Major Academy and two year enlisted commitment is required. It’s a 10 month in-residence course at Ft Bliss.

My son was posted there for about a year. Army nursing training. Hot is a good description. We spent a week there during July of 2022. I don’t know if we would every vacation there again, but we kept busy with the grandkids while we were there.

Me too. And I didn’t serve. Both grandfathers, several aunts and uncles and my nephew just left for Marine boot camp a few weeks ago, but I never did.
Worked with a guy who claimed to be an ex-Marine and would tell tall stories that didn’t add up. Boot camp at Fort Knox. Had never heard of Parris Island and the real kicker ….. he’d walk around shouting ‘SIMPLIFY’ – claiming it was Marine Corp creed….
Then he got called on it by an ACTUAL Marine – ‘Nam combat vet named Eugene that called everyone, man or woman, ‘babe’….. Looked right at this poser, rolled up his sleeve to show his USMC tattoo on his arm and said, very quietly….. ‘It’s Semper Fi….. babe….’
Dude quit like 3 weeks later.

I worked with a guy like that once. I don’t recall if he every claimed to be a veteran, but he had lots of story. If he did every job that he claimed that he had done, he would have had to be about 25 years older than he was.

My dad served in the Navy during the Korean war and later 20 plus years with the Air National Guard in Minnesota. I think he got to Tech Sergeant.

My brother was a Master Seargent in the ND National Guard when word came that his unit would be deploying to Iraq in a month or so. He considered putting in his paperwork to get out. He had every reason to do so, he had a wife and 2 young daughters at home. But he went…he said he wouldn’t have been able to look himself in the mirror if he hadn’t….and he said who is going to lead all of these 19 and 20 year old kids if I am not there?
My brother is the anti-Walz – unfortunately though he is a Democrat.
Walz referred to the MN National Guard members as “19 year old cooks”.
He also referred to the non-metro area, of Minnesota, as “rocks and cows”.
The 19 year olds in my brother’s unit were manning gun trucks in convoys and receiving incoming fire from RPGs…Walz is a piece of shit.
I see some talk about our defense not looking good in this game. I agree, but wouldn’t put much stock into it. I’m assuming that most of the DCs in the league will not show much of their defensive game plans during preseason. I expect B-flo will be way more aggressive come regular season.

It’s always fun to see the Vikings win. Darnold looked ok. The offense looked ok. It was fun watching JJ play even though you can see he will need some adjusting to the speed of the NFL. As others have mentioned, the defense looks suspect.
All defenses are suspect in pre season, no one is scheming or showing their tricks. Just like we didnt run any special plays in the red zone on our first drive. RELAX.

It was fun listening to Justin Jefferson rave about the wide receiver room. While I’m sure he was just being enthusiastic, Nailor seemed to make a very positive impression.
It was fun listening to JJets. He has a lot of very positive energy. PA was having fun with him , too.
I thought PA sounded frustrated at times, mostly because he is used to doing play by play on the radio.
Well, on the radio, he doesn’t have to be accurate.
“What a great run !!!!”, while on live TV it looks like an ordinary play.
Really have no idea about Gilmore. For sure out CB’a are not stellar. But after watching all last year, and some yesterday. the ‘middle’ of our defense is wide open on most all passing plays. Don’t believe this is a CB issue but something is not right.
well if we are creating pressure on the QB, he doesn’t have all day to throw and pick apart the middle of the field. I think it’s more than just poor CB play.
Sometimes you have to simply play good solid base defense. The Raiders suck as an offense. You play a good well schemed NFL offense you have to play good base defense. they will pick up blitzes and are well prepared for it.
Flores noted that aggressive defenses have to leave parts of the field vulnerable. You can defend the field, or go after the offense. He wants to put pressure on the opposing QB and force bad throws, or get sacks. The middle of the field may be exposed, as the linebackers rush the passer.
Of course. But many good defenses generate pressure and don’t leave the middle of the field so wide open.
Look what happens to us on many zero blitzes. You want to put pressure on. QB to get rid of ball quickly. BUT, if your corners are playing 12 yards off the line of scrimmage, ala like the Charger game, any reasonable NFL QB will make quick easy throws giving up lots of YAC. The defense by design is self defeating.
Usually, two issues when middle is wide open. LB’s don’t drop deeply enough and or 3rd layer drop far two deeply creating huge gaps. And this is farther aggravated if one of center defenders chases and leaves his zone.
Most of last year when this happened, Flores claimed the guys aren’t playing the defense correctly. OK, what’s that say.
JR, you are making salient points, but there’s a point Flores made that I think was true. When you blitz, the old adage for the offense is “throw into the blitz”. I.e., take advantage the vacated area by the blitzer. However, these days, defenses try and bait the QB into making that throw, and then have a defender fall into the vacated space, hoping to intercept the ball. I think Flores had some of the defenders not playing the defense exactly right in his first year, which is pretty normal.
OK. But you may have noticed we are not real stout stopping the run, especially right up the middle. All these blitzes further aggravate this problem too.
IO’m for blitzing but not a steady diet of it – good offenses will beat you more often than not. You have to play good base. no matter what.
Agree, but sometimes you just have to compensate. If you can’t stop the run or get to the QB with your front four, then run a 3-4 and use the linebackers to wreak havoc if you can.
Hope the sign him…for no other reason than Harry can have another old guy to play checkers with.
I think the D only stopped one third down conversion in the first half.
Will the kick off rules change how teams evaluate the returner? It seems like teams may look for a bruiser type returner rather than a speedy returner.
Personally, I don’t think there will be very many returns.
The NFL has ended the kickoff return. On purpose.
I tend to disagree, I don’t think teams are going to want to give the opponent the ball on the 30 yard line, especially in a close game.
I just think the overall set up is to NOT have big returns.
There will always be a few exceptions.
But I think on average it will be a boring play with little to no excitement.
I do agree on this, but if you have a bruiser back like a AP who can break tackles, once he is threw the initial line, there is only the kicker to stop him one on one.
They were alluding to that during the game that if Wangu can get through the first wave, no one will be able to catch him I think blocking is going to be key.
If only he could catch a swing pass out of the backfield and make a move.
The announcers were trying to pawn it off on that fact that he never has really had a chance.

My point is, I don’t think you need a speedster anymore. If you have a big back that can break a tackle or two, he doesn’t need to be lightning fast. He just has to beat the kicker.
I could see kick teams having a guy or two drop back on the kick, in the future to prevent it being kicker vs. runner one on one.
I heard that the Kickoff returns are now more similar to Punt returns.

So it sounds like it was more on the blocking than the kicker.
Blair Walsh looked Hall of Fame for the first few years. Reichart will likely look All Pro until the NFC championship game is on the line.
Carlson from the Raiders was our draft choice and fired by Zim(I know he had issues in his rookie year) and now he is automatic from 60 and in….. only time will tell

If they can get a late round pick for him it is better than nothing. I don’t think we can get anything for Hall at this point, so we might as well keep him.

Enjoyed the game Saturday, defense looks suspect, but we were not running our full blitz package, so I think that will help our secondary in real games. I would not mind signing Gilmore, I believe he is good enough and smart enough, much like Pat Pete, to overcome his losing a step.
I got to see some of the preseason game.
JJ looked sufficiently “quarterbacky,” in that he didn’t seem overwhelmed. He displayed some pocket awareness, mobility and zip on his passes.
Secondary and special teams are bad and should feel bad.
Cine appeared in the frame a couple of times. His body language came off as disinterested, but maybe he did something when I wasn’t watching.
I thought McCarthy showed he’s got talent. Looked good really, for the first start. He’s still got a lot to learn, but he done good as far as I’m concerned.
Defense and special teams… yeah. Meh.
I assume Gilmore has lost a step, which is why he is available.
Still might be better than what the Vikings have currently.
