Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics out. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down the rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be cool to one another. Like it says above, just be civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone and that’s fine, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something feel free to ask. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here. Just be civil and cool to one another.

I just wish somebody had asked KAM when he was hired if he knew how to build a winning football team.

He would have replied that he had been on some ‘winning football organizations’ so he knew how building one looked like it.

He knows how to give vague answers like any good politician.

I didn’t even see it this morning when I drove to work but a guy blew through the stop sign at the terminus of the Bloomfield highway at the “T” with the Sidney highway estimated at 100 mph by the HP, would have been a great Dukes of Hazzard style shot. Apparently the pickup is quite some way off the road tires didn’t touch ground for many many yards.

I understand that the off season is crockpot recipe time. I just started my own recipe that we/I make frequently. I call it Salsa Chicken.

Line the bottom of the CP with corn to keep the meat from direct contact with the heat. Add Chicken thighs (I do 4-8 depending on current needs), top with salsa (about 1/3 jar). I let it sit for 8-10 hrs on low since I add the chicken right from the freezer. Serve over rice.

Since I shop at my Commissary I can normally make this for about $1 a meal and it only take a few minutes to get started. And it is pretty tasty to boot, different Salsas = different flavors.

So easy/cheap/tasty that even a privileged idiot like myself can handle it.

Gross. Another 1/2 foot of powdery snow, on top of what we had this week.

And the wind is howling.

1/2 the outlaws made it – hit Omaha last night late and made the drive. Other 1/2 in the air and will have 45 miles of snow-covered I-80 to trek after landing – if the State Patrol doesn’t close down the interstate, which feels likely.

Been going in 15 minute increments since 5. Shovel, sweep, move snow, lay ice melt, freeze nads, go inside, unfreeze nads. Repeat. Goose has been a monster help howling at every plow that comes by and standing in my line of fire and running under shovel-fulls of snow as I toss it to the side.

Have yet to write one word of a eulogy for my FIL that I’ll deliver in a little over 24 hours.

I need more coffee.

I had to speak at my Brothers funeral, all three surviving brothers did.

I found that if I focus on what I want to say, who/what I am talking about, I can forget that I am standing in front of a bunch of people.
But then I seldom care what others think of me unless they are important/close to me, and their opinions of me won’t change that easily.

Been on a health Journey that I am finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. I have coached football for the last 12 years and this year my blood pressure as some of you know was in the 200s. Stepped down from coaching, really focused on my health both physically and mentally. Since the end of October to today down from about 295 to this morning was 264. Lightest I’ve been in my adult life. I need new pants haha. This is about what I weighed Sophomore/Junior year of high school. I have more to lose but I am naturally a big dude. Had a full physical, blood work done and my numbers aren’t just OK they are mostly great, all of them… except the blood pressure. Found out that a big piece of the puzzle is hereditary, my mom has been battling high blood pressure in the 160s since she was in her 30s and she wasn’t big like I am… thanks mom lol. Had a doctor’s appointment Monday, blood pressure had been hanging around the 160s for about the last month, sometimes higher, sometimes a little lower and I was feeling kind of frustrated but trying a new combo of meds starting Monday night and this week it’s finally in steady decline. Today in the 130s. This combo of meds seems to be doing the trick. Besides the meds I have been taking a long list of trying different supplements as well. I am working out basically every morning for usually 45-60 minutes and a few days after work doing more just straight cardio a few times a week. I am eating healthier and drinking less but still enjoying life. We go on vacation I’m having some good food and drink but working out hard in the morning, drinking water between old fashioneds or a beer lol. Started an incredible meditation app called Waking Up, I cannot recommend it enough to everyone. Has totally changed my relationship with stress and anxiety. Anyway, life is good, everyone stay warm.

Right, and it would have been for me. I never, ever go to the doctor because I am very healthy otherwise. I only go when I have been very sick which is like 3 times in the last decade they probably wrote of some elevated blood pressure to being sick. Who knows how long I have actually been dealing with this shit.

I do have my own machine but I have bad white coat hypertension that thing turning on and making noise makes my blood pressure go up haha. But it’s getting better. When I was in on Monday they nurse strapped me to a machine and it was like 180 and the doc knowing my history and response to those machines gave me a few minutes and hand did it and it was 160 lol.

The key to weed paranoia is when you start to feel paranoid…… smoke more weed.

hahaha, man no. I can’t go that route. I’ve had a band practice in a previous band, one of the guys had a new electronic water dab bong… he was like who wants to hit it. I was like I’ll try it, first hit I thought I screwed up and didn’t get anything, I couldn’t see any smoke but could taste it, so I went in for a 2nd… fuck that was a mistake. Ended up the room next to the band room for a while in a chair, eventually waddled into the band room and said someone needs to drive me home lol haha.

I got put on anxiety meds. I still have the prescription actually. That stuff erodes a person from the inside out. I got better at managing it once I realized I don’t get any points for filleting myself.

Plus, it helped to finally hear someone say, “Well, shit…if I was in your position, I would have anxiety, too!” instead of just saying, “Eh, what’s the big deal? I once was in position X once, which was way worse.”

I always try to remember that when dealing with folks. It is tempting when a person is telling you they have a problem to respond with, “Whatever. I once in a more challenging situation…”

Heredity really can give you some bad stuff. I’ve battled with high cholesterol for decades. Part of it has to do with my weight and people like to point that out because partly it’s true and because some people are just mean spirited and have no empathy. But this past year I participated in a dna study for Mayo and found out that I have a defective gene that causes Hypercholesterolemia. My genes don’t regulate cholesterol correctly. It is hereditary. My sister is a stick and eats healthy and her cholesterol was in the 300s before they got her on meds. While we can work hard and try to be healthy, sometimes you just have to deal with what you are dealt.

BUT, when literally every number they can find in my physical, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, everything my doc said they weren’t even in the normal range they were mostly in the really great range but blood pressure through the roof… there’s some hereditary stuff going on. Made me feel a little better too know my mom is in her 60s and has been battling this since her 30s. I got real out of wack a while there when I first got my diagnosis and the first set of meds weren’t really helping. Ugh, shit’s scary.

How a business guy (no GM experience) would go about draft.
First. Goal – win division and be able to play a competitive game in NFC Championship game.
How – (some guessing) a top 5 offense and 10 -12 defense. Or, a 1-3 defense and maybe 10 -12 defense. Given KOC is offensive coach and out strength is WR group – going with first choice,
Gap analysis – where’s offense? Don’t have time here, for fun ask with Kirk, JJ, Hock and everyone else we have all healthy, can we be top five? We do have a lot of guys now with two years experience running this offense ( a complicated, but good one).
Defense – need a lot of help Maybe another stud to go with Hunter and pick up a capable DB that can cover ( at least some).
If, and this. would be the tough analysis, can offense with our talent be top 5 and defense with suggested help (and Flores) be 10 – 12?
If I’m feeling good at this point 64000 dollar question. is Kirk’s health – leg and overall. Their would be a lot of talk with medical experts here. Could I count on him for 3 years. If so, we work on money. If not, what to do – maybe roll with Mullens/Hall for now since they know the offense, and start with defense talent and get QB later.
Just some thoughts how a business guy might think.

This is from Matthew Coller, and is his take on using a Vet QB (Like Kirko) to try for a super bowl

The following veteran QBs (non rookie contract) have reached the Super Bowl in the last 10 years: Matthew Stafford, Tom Brady, Tom Brady, Matt Ryan, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady.

I don’t need to explain the key takeaway here, right? …

I agree with this. Time to start over and rebuild a team that can be competitive.
Kirk is not Tom Brady.

Keeping Kirko is def an “all in now” move, but I do not think the team has enough talent to do that, so that is why I prefer a rebuild now vs after three more years of Kirk and just above average fails.

Without Cousins, we’ll have way below average fails for a couple years minimum though. The Redskins have been non-competitive going on 7 years now after Cousins left, but they have the #2 pick in the draft, 8 other draft picks, and over $86M in cap space. Next year they might be decent, and the following year really good. That would mean it took 8 to 9 years to recover from letting Cousins walk.

Does that mean KAM should do whatever is necessary to sign Cousins? Probably not. The cost to keep Cousins is going to be steep. Who will KAM turn to, to lead the team in the future? No idea.

Could it be a LONG time before the Vikings are good? It could.

I think KAM and the Vikings are not as dysfunctional as the Washington commies.

Just because that team has been in QB hell since Kirko left, that does not guarantee the Vikings will suffer the same fate. Although the Vikings have not been good at drafting a QBOTF, this current regime has not really tried that yet.

A less expensive QB on a rookie deal allows the team more flexibility with the rest of the roster.

If we have way below average fails for a couple years after moving on, but then finally improve, I am great with that.

I’d rather move on, rebuild, and get better with a chance to win it all in 2-4 years vs sign up for 2-4 more years of what we had the last 6.

If a championship can be had with this current roster, great.
I am skeptical.

I simply maintain before they take even one step in any direction, figure out the exact gaps to fix first and then have a plan to fix that in the most effective and efficient manner possible.

I’m just pointing out that it isn’t guaranteed that they will be bad for at least 3 years by picking a QB. There have been many more examples but that was just a quick list off the top of my head. Why can’t the Vikings be the next team to have “the guy”? They sure won’t if they don’t try. Dak was pretty good right away. Russell Wilson beat out a vet with a big money contract his rookie year. Goff was in the SB quick. Lamar and the Ravens were good when he started playing.

JRobert

For sure they could not be bad at all or perhaps for ever. But i believe in meritoricy – not this prevailing BS.
Mahomes took over for Smith because he was better at that point. DAK took over for Romo because he was better. Rams got Stafford because he was better than Goff. And Wilson beat out the prevailing scrub. All put a better QB on the field – there was not one moment of “suck” period.
If we do this correctly, we don’t have to either. Find a QB better than Kirk but don’t put him on the field until he can play better.just like all your examples did.

Here is a take you are going to agree some and disagree some.
This collier guy mentioned above, I have no idea who he is.
Now, last week was talking with a very knowledgeable NFL guy (former SB winning QB).
His take – we run one of the most (if not #1) sohphisticated offenses in the NFL. Unlike the Niners with is QB friendly, ours is WR friendly to maximize their talents and requires certain QB talents. The scheme will get guys open and if the QB can do his job correctly, big plays.
You have suggested altering the offense – why? BSF and others have shown screen shoots and we have WR’s open all over the place. Just get the right guy to drive the car.
And if you are going to draft a QB, you better make damn sure he can run “our offense.” Most of the bridge guys mentioned here are a waste, stick with Mullens for now.

Well, screen shots of open receivers is fools gold IMO, JR. Watch the all 22 version of our games. It’s a miracle we complete as many passes as we do. Our receivers do not separate well, and they especially don’t “win quick” off the line. They’re all out there making multiple moves, while looking at the defense, and not the QB. The QB has to see this unfold and wait for routes to develop. Then about the time that happens, he’s getting crushed. The Niners offense runs a LOT of timing routes. Purdy takes his drop, hits his back foot, and the ball is out. The Niners offense is very good, and in fact one of the best in the league. On the other hand, KOC’s scheme requires a very cerebral, experienced QB, with great arm talent to run. Without THAT guy, it’s not a good offense at all.

True about Brady for sure. Stafford, Ryan not so much. And I said be competitave at NFC Championship – get there and play a solid game and let the chips fall.
Kirk is not ” all in. now”. It is merely an evaluation of present condition – no more
I am of the belief, if I build the team correctly (as. the Rams did), I can get the QB later as needs dictate.
To me rebuild is merely a word – in business, football, whatever, you are always in some form of rebuild.
Unlike many, I try to leave the love?hate Kirk of “initial” planning.

Think 2017 was a b it fake – got lucky as hell in first round and then the championship game wasn’t all that competitive.
I’m merely suggesting evaluating where we are at – sort of fairly. And if we can get there with a top5 offense and 10-12 defense – how far are we from that.
Don’t think we were as good as record last year or as bad this year. Sort of trying to frame where we’re at in a more objective way.
And me personally, I think the let’s just draft the QBOFT is superficial and a bit shallow.

I got slammed yesterday for asking if we competed for a division since we technically were alive week 16. That was shot down. Yet when Kirk goes 8-8-1 that’s enough to keep him to “compete” for a division title.

Overall, the Vikings haven’t competed for a division much since Kirk arrived, so why people think we should keep doing it is baffling to me.

Once you get to a certain level, you can swap out QB’s and players to see if it works.

I’m really trying to learn from you guys. I’m sort of stuck sometimes thinking there must be more to it.
I don’t really see a lot of difference between Stafford/Goff/Cousins and I’m guessing in a head to head comparison Cousins has the best record.
But I’m trying to learn.

According to Kyle Shanahan, Cousins is good enough to win a Super Bowl… so I’ll take his opinion over yours, if you don’t mind.

Top paid QB’s in the NFL:

  1. Joe Burrows
  2. Patrick Mahomes
  3. Justin Herbert
  4. LaMar Jackson
  5. Jalen Hurts
  6. Russell Wilson
  7. Kyler Murray
  8. Deshaun Watson
  9. Josh Allen
  10. Daniel Jones
  11. Matthew Stafford
  12. Dak Prescott
  13. Derek Carr
  14. Aaron Rodgers
  15. Kirk Cousins

Tell me again how it’s HIS contract destroying the team? Total bullshit argument.

And of course, as Vikings fans we do not deserve good things.

Glad it is Friday, and I can stay indoors (except for taking the dogs out) all weekend and watch football.

Possible.

I have a degree of JJ blindness. I think he’s good, but he doesn’t make me giddy. If I had to pick between him or Tyreke Hill, I’d take Hill.

But I freely admit, this could be pure foolishness.

I said this when he was coming out of college… he didn’t seem flashy to me as far as a physical specimen. He’s not a Tyreek, or Moss, or Megatron, he doesn’t beat you with pure athletic ability. Obviously he has elite athletic ability but he’s not those guys. Who he is is more of a faster Chris Carter or Larry Fitz, I think JJ could have a much longer productive career because he doesn’t have to rely on having to burn people (but he can), or being just bigger and stronger. The guy will beat you with smart routes, and insane focus.

He wasn’t. Ho-hum 40 time. But the tape didn’t lie. His game day speed was very different than his timed speed – I don’t remember him ever getting caught from behind. And the work ethic – legendary conditioning regiment. He’s the 2nd greatest football player of all time in my opinion, right behind Lawrence Taylor.

Yeah, Moss is my all-time favorite football player, but I don’t have any issue with folks putting Rice ahead of him on any receiver list.

I think JJ is someone the team will keep because he sells tickets.

I would still trade him for picks.

Good thing I am not a GM, because the team would not have ever extended Kirko and we would be still rolling with SLOTERGOAT and Heineken
And probably have the same number of playoff wins the last 6 years.

Yes, JJ is a cash machine. I concur with that. I know people that don’t even carry about football who now sport JJ jerseys.

I, too, would probably take the picks because I view it as a way to jumpstart the team out of perpetual middle-of-the-road. But, again, that is dependent on nailing the draft, and I’m not too confident about that either.

Vikings biggest need:

That’s a tough one. We have entire levels that are a need, but if I can pick only one, I’d like to see a guy in the middle of the DL that can bust things up.

I’m not even sure I could name our IDL right now. I think there is that Philips guy. I don’t even know who else is there. Back in the day we had the Williams wall. We even had Jerry Ball who once pancaked Aikmen into a concussion.

Really, you could probably sub our OL center and our DL nose tackles in and out for each other, and I wouldn’t even notice it.

Tomorrow will be a good day to hunker down and watch some football.

This is why the season shouldn’t even start until November. Too many nice Sundays in September and October where one can do other things. Then imagine having football to watch watch and follow all the way through the crappiest part of winter.

It would be amazing! Even if you needed Peacock to get the full effect…
