Sybil’darius was set to make $12.1….Browns reworked his deal to $11.7 so the difference is what the Vikings ate. We had a $3.3 dead hit also. We had $1.0 cap space now we have around $10. After Cook impending release we’ll have $20 so at least we’re getting the cap in order for this year. Maybe sign one more significant FA out there. good DT or Edge rusher, maybe a corner or Risner.

Notes from today’s vikings practice. (Will—SI)

Here are a few observations from Friday’s practice.

First-round pick Jordan Addison looked as advertised. He’s sharp in and out of his breaks while running routes, with little wasted movement as he changes direction. And although he did have one drop on a low pass in 7-on-7, his hands looked good as well.
“Jordan’s been meeting over Zoom a little bit since we drafted him, obviously within the confines of the rules,” O’Connell said. “You can tell he’s a little bit ahead of a lot of the guys out on the field today, where he’s lining up, understanding exactly what that play means for what routes he has and how to go adjust once the pictures changes when that ball’s snapped. I thought Jordan had a really good day and just looks and feels the part, which is exactly what I expected out of him.”

Seventh-round pick DeWayne McBride, the running back from UAB, wasn’t participating as he recovers from a hamstring injury. (Great..hurt already)

Slow day, so reading some football articles. Came across a stat that I probably should have known but didn’t – namely, our guards led the league in allowing QB pressures. So I wondered, although we lost AT, might we have been better off overall be selecting a stout interior lineman early instead of a WR?

norseman1

Too many needs, so few picks. Yes interior pressure wreaks havoc, we can only hope.

The Vikings have tried to fix the O-line over the last many years through the draft and free agency. They have two very good tackles, but yest the interior line remains way too porous. Cousins is the most hit, knocked down, sacked, and pressured QB in the league over the last 5 years.

Yep, cuz of KC’s style he needs interior help the most. Esier to step up if a edge guy takes a outside shot. If his center gets bull rushed and laying on his feet it’s not good.

Ezra was the worst of the bunch last year and that’s no joke. I have hope for Ingram because he has the anchor and strength to spare it’s his technique. Turd was better and serviceable. Ezra was straight dogshit.

I’d like to see them cut Cook and sign Risner and put him at LG. Then we’d be cooking with gas.

I remember when the Redskins drafted RGIII and the media proclaimed he would “instantly make the O-line better with his mobility”. That in fact was note true though. The O-line said they never knew where RGIII was going to be, so they had a lot of trouble setting up and protecting him. A pocket passer makes it far easier on an O-line because they know where he is going to be, and what they need to do to protect him.

Guards are more likely to take a outside rush and push him aside. He assumes QB is in the pocket.

Correct. Keeping in mind the defensive guy can see where the QB is, and the O-lineman cannot. If they know where he is, they have a better chance of protecting him.

That being true, seems like a good lineman would help the offense so much more than a WR- how about all the 3rd and short getting stuffed. Well, just my opinion.

Yes, I was surprised at the WR pick as well. Football is won and lost in the trenches as you well know. Cousins being a pocket passer, a good O-line would be job 1 to me. Belichick had amongst the best O-lines in the league every year for Brady. He also had amongst the best D-lines. To me, Cousins has been pretty damn good with such a poor line in front of him 5 years running.

Playing tomorrow morning with some guys who want to play for money. I met them a couple weeks ago and they were fun to play with. We exchanged numbers and I told them if they wanted to get together again to contact me. Got a text last night and said they were playing Saturday and needed a 4th. Said they were going to play for a couple bucks to spice things up. I told them I was fine with that and would see them there. Playing a course I’ve never seen, so will play my normal conservative round. Just get off the tee decently, get the ball around the green decently, hit a decent wedge, and make a decent putt.

Yeah, I’ve played $5 a hole skins a few times in my life. I’ve also thrown $40 into a pot that is divvied up at the end based on scores. Doesn’t matter to me. I just play my game and let the cards fall where they may. It tends to work out for me more often than not though. People who play for money tend to put too much pressure on themselves to perform, and try shots they have little chance to pull off. Plodders like me irritate them. I’m not gonna make worse than bogey on any given hole. That usually means they have to make pars and birdies to beat me.

New Monday Night Flex Scheduling this year.

As the league explained to reporters today, flex scheduling will continue on Sunday nights and has now expanded to Monday nights as well. From Week 12 to Week 17, if the game scheduled for Monday Night Football is not looking like a good matchup, the league has the opportunity to move a Sunday afternoon game into Monday night. The league will make the final decision on flexing Monday night games 12 days in advance.

Did you ever hear how this song came to be? Puffy was struggling to find a beat to the song he was tasked to do for that Godzilla movie. And he woke up one night with his TV still on and there was on of those, “Buy these greatest hits of the 70s” type of commercial. I had not heard that. It is a good riff. I remember back in the day before Internet, I had no idea what the song was called. I only knew LZ sang it, so I went to the music store and just blind-bought a LZ album.

It turned out to be the last song on the disc, so I got SUPER lucky with my guess!

Not a big fan of the Stars (they eliminated the Oilers about a zillion times in the 90’s) but would rather play them than the Kraken. Not a big fan of the Knights later gonna be tough in their building tonight. Hopefully lots of Oil intensity and stay out of the penalty box while gracefully drawing penalties. They stick to their game stay disciplined they can beat anyone.

Summers right around the corner and nice weather will be the norm.

I do all my oil changes, cars, riding lawn mower etc… was collecting quite number of containers with used oil so I bought a 6 gallon commercial grade cooking oil storage can so I can have a nice way to store a few oil changes then eventually take it to the county dump to recycle. The cooking oil cans work perfect. Removable top with clamps, handle to pour and a sealed top that won’t leak.

Thats not a bad idea at all. The John Deer dealership back home (old building and new) heat their shops with the discarded oil from equipment. So instead of dumping it or paying someone to take it they just reuse it for heat in the winter. Good deal all around.

I don’t see a situation to keep him.

He is the only RB on the roster who can break a big play for a TD.
Defenses have to keep a player on Cook. I don’t think defenses would be that worried about Mattison or any other RB currently on the roster.

I disagree.

Cook broke 100 yards twice last year. Once was Buffalo which he ended with 119 on the ground but had an 81 yard TD…the other was against AZ. He had 111 with a long of 30.

He isn’t the “guy” he was. In the KO scheme at least.

With Mattison being the defacto lead back, it guarantees opportunities for those behind him because of what he is lacking.

The fans and coaching staff want Cousins (a natural pocket passer in the mold of Manning, Brees, Marino, Brady, etc) to suddenly become Lamar Jackson and make plays with his legs. They fault him publicly for not doing so. I would advise the Vikings to utilize Cousins best trait, which is throwing the football, and stop insisting he run with the ball. Running QB’s get injured. ALL of them. Cousins is not a running QB and insisting he become one isn’t going end well IMO. He’s never missed a game for injury… so let’s get him running around in the open field so he can end up like Alex Smith.

No, that’s not correct. No one is asking for a heavy does of RPO or anything like that from Cousins but rather when a play DOES break down he has enough athleticism to make something happen and extend plays.

Believe he actually did run RPO’s first couple of years under Shanahan. Actually scored a big TD on one against SB bound Ravens, But why would anyone want him or any pocket GB like him (or Stafford, etc) to do it.

No longer New Vikings Fan

That RPO scheme under Shanahan was designed for RGIII. From that perspective, Cousins ran an offense that wasn’t designed for him. He just executed the play. Much has been made of Cousins age here. He was in his early twenties then, he’s in his mid 30’s now. I think it’s folly to insist he run around at this stage of his career. Take advantage of what Cousins does best. Don’t try and make him something he’s not. Just my opinion.

I don’t disagree at all with your take. Someone had said he “couldn’t” do it. I was just pointing out that he could. And like you, it’s crazy at his age to use him like that. And I do believe he’s a far better athlete than most people give him credit for.

The problem is (as I stated) Cousins is a pocket passer. He isn’t “athletic enough” (your term) to do what folks want him to do. Forcing a square peg into a round hole is fool’s work.

Edgecrusher71

Yes he is athletic enough when a play breaks down to extend it. Or even gain some yards. He absolutely has the physical capabilities to do that and has proven that he does.

I think he’ll end up like Alex Smith if folks push him to run around. He isn’t an instinctive runner, nor is anywhere near the athlete the running QB’s are. Again this is my opinion. It’s absolutely stupid to ask a guy who is NOT a running QB to be one. Especially when if he is injured you have no chance to win.

Edgecrusher71
Reply to  No longer New Vikings Fan

But that’s just it, no one is asking him to be a “running QB.” Who is asking him to do that? They are saying he has the speed, (no he’s not Lamar, but he also isn’t stuck in concrete either), to escape MORE than he does, He has the speed to make MORE out of broken plays. They aren’t saying to turn into a running QB but he has the abilities to do a little more with his speed.

No longer New Vikings Fan

Why didn’t anyone ever insist Tom Brady run more? How about Drew Brees? Manning? Marino? All HoF QB’s and Brady certainly the GOAT. Why? Because they weren’t scrambling QB’s. They were pocket passers. All QB’s who use their legs get injured. All of them. Know which Vikings QB has never missed a game for injury? Kirk Cousins. Running QB’s get hurt. He is not a natural runner. It’s not in his DNA. Watch when Cousins runs. Does he look accomplished? Does he look good running? No. It’s because he’s not good at it.

Edgecrusher71

You’re changing the argument again. Cousins HAS enough speed to extend plays and at times escape. Again, no one is saying just be a scrambler they are saying he could make more use of that skill. That’s it. Good lord, why does everything have to be so extreme.

Reasonable Coach says: Hey Kirk, I think you could use your athletic abilities a little more with some success.

No Longer’s Reaction: HOLY FUCK! How dumb! They are literally asking him to be Lamar Jackson except with more running. So dumb! They are basically saying all RPOS ALL THE TIME except with no Pass Option!

I am not reacting emotionally Edge, so don’t assign that type of reaction to my commentary. Rather my position is rational. Cousins is not a good runner. He is awkward looking when he runs and not elusive in any way. It is far from a strength. So… with that in mind, when the head coach sends in a bad play call, let’s depend on our pocket passer to use his legs to save the day. THAT is stupid. What the OC should do is design the offense and any play call to give Cousins a way to get the ball out of his hands. That would be smart.

But you straw man the shit out of the situation. That is what I am saying. All that was mentioned was he could use his speed to extend plays and at times even gain yardage a little more. Then you go and say he’s not Lamar Jackson. No one is saying he should be. That’s textbook Strawman.

No longer New Vikings Fan
Reply to  Edgecrusher71

I said he’s not Lamar Jackson for sure, and he isn’t. Lamar Jackson missed the last 6 games of the season this past year.

Cousins tried to scramble many times last year mostly to little use. He was tackled by a D lineman most of the time. If you can’t evade a D-lineman, you’re not much of a runner.

Expecting a pocket passing QB who can’t get away from a D-lineman to use his legs and save the day when the OC calls a bad play is in a word, inane. That is literally dumber than a box of hair. That’s the plan though.

Brady pretty much never had to run to save a play. He did use his legs about 6 times in his career to get a first down. KOC expects Cousins to do that at 34 years of age. I don’t agree with this plan of action. Rather he should set his QB up to succeed with a good scheme, good play calling, and good play design. Don’t rely on your QB’s greatest weakness to save the day.

The role of the RB in the NFL is more complex than ever these days. Rookie RB’s must be able to run the ball against more sophisticated and talented defensive fronts than they ever faced in college, obviously. They also must be able to pick up the blitz, read defenses, and be accomplished receivers both in the flat and downfield. In addition, NFL offensive schemes and plays are a huge leap in sophistication and nuance from college to the pros. Rookies will need to master all this if they want to be RB#1 for any team in the NFL these days.

DE Viking

Correct.
Which is why I think Cook still has value to the offense. He is overpaid as RB go, but he is enough of a threat to where play action can freeze a defense for a second. I don’t think any other RB on the roster will have that dynamic to affect an opposing defense.

But reading the tea leaves, it looks like Cook is gone. Which will hurt the offense IMO.

Just never dug A7X. The musicianship is there, the song writing is there but just never moved me. I’ve always gotten the feeling they were always cutting off any of the sharp edges of metal to soften it and make it more accessible to the masses. It reminds me of my cousins whose mom was an early childhood expert and all their cool toys if they had any sharp edges like a Batman action figure the top spikes of the mask were always rounded off, the spikes on his glove/gauntlet were always rounded off. It was like, cool toys but, that’s weak sauce lol. I just wish A7X would go full saturated tone instead choked to death guitar tone, put some grit in things instead of making it so damn pristine and compressing/squeezing all the rough edges off.

Really liked Great Wolf lodge in the Dells.
Blizzard Beach in Disney was also really fun.

If you ever decide to take a cruise, Royal Carribean has a super fun waterpark on their private island.

I try to avoid going to a game on national tv, since I can watch it live from my couch. Which might rule out the Filthy game……

I'm a dad, husband, Army vet, believer, and a die-hard, life-long Vikings fan from the great state of North Dakota. I've been a Viking fan dating back to 1980, I've been covering the Vikings for nearly a decade, and I founded Skoloholics in 2022. I work in real estate and property management, I love spending time with family, working in the yard, doing anything in the outdoors, and as you can tell from my username, I love fishing.
