Happy Tuesday, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics, your home for Minnesota Vikings Discussion! Every day you can join us for the latest Minnesota Vikings news, lots of Minnesota Vikings talk, also NFL news and updates, and most anything else you may have on your mind. At Skoloholics, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, sign up and join the conversation.

Man, I was watching our FF league. Kiddo and I were neck & neck for the #1 and #2 spots for the week, but he came up just 6 points short. They’d have fed his RB more (K Williams) if they hadn’t fallen behind so early. That sucks, I was rooting for him. For the season, it looks like Derby took his first loss of the year, but remains solidly in first place at 8-1. I’ve somehow lucked my way into 2nd place at 7-2, and Stu is in third at 6-3. After that, it’s a tight race between 4 or 5 people who are hovering around .500 and battling for the remaining playoff spots. It’s been a fun year, hopefully we can build on this for next year.

Vikings/NFL News and Updates:

Tua and the Dolphins were too much for the Stafford and the Rams, final score 23-15, from CBS Sports.

From Vikings.com, Kevin O’Connell reviews lessons to be learned from Vikings @ Jaguars. Ya, lots of learning opportunities on Sunday. Lots.

Bears HC Matt Eberflus says that changes will be coming after their embarrassing home loss to the Patriots on Sunday, according to NFL.com. Eberflus said that ‘everything is on the table’. Everything? Even the GM? I don’t think Cayleb Williams is going to be an NFL QB for very long.

Media Selection:

This was pretty interesting, I watched it last night. Enjoy!

Will they need to be confirmed by the Senate?

Not long ago there were a couple of gold prospecting shows, each was hosted by one of 2 brothers, sons of a well-known gold prospector.

They made more money selling GPAA memberships and gold panning equipment than they did finding gold.

The one show was ironically called “Prospecting America.”

I still think the guy chuckles every time he thinks about the double meaning……while counting zeroes on the numbers in his bank account.

Love the idea of drain the swamp and this is more than downsiziing government. Saving money is great, killing the toxic atmosphere is more important.
DOD – gone WOKE. Maybe get rid of all political appointments and maybe even three and four stars.
DOJ, FBI CIA FEMA et all, develop a plan to get rid of all c suite type executives ( forget the name govt calls them).
You do this, and the swamp will become a lot cleaner and less toxic.

I was shocked when I woke up and checked the Wisconsin vote on Wed morning. All night it had been consistently running with Trump ahead by 75k to 100k. And that included the blue counties already having in over 90% of their vote. So how did that all of a sudden, magically turn into a much closer vote. I’m not typically a conspiracy theorist, but those kinds of things make normal people really wonder what is going on.

Tarriffs done correctly will work some. But they are a better tool to be used against other countries that are taxing the hell out of our imported products – level the playing field.
There are certainly efficientcies to be picked up in most agencies, but the really big money is in entitlements, That must be addressed and fixed.

Changing tax law is not “budget”. A change to tax law, like changing a rate from x to y, requires congress to change existing tax law. And it will never get closure in the Senate without 60 votes.

DE Viking
Reply to  JRobert

I’m not an expert in the process, but it doesn’t seem correct to me.

When they want to overspend, how do they accomplish that without having the tax revenues to do it?

JRobert
JRobert
Reply to  DE Viking
12 November 2024 3:25 pm

The fact is different departments have approved budgets (appropriations) but I don’t believe their is a mechanism to control over spending other than the vote to raise the debt ceiling.
For example, in someone’s budge is a line item for welfare, but if a lot of people lose their jobs and go on welfare, they will all get the money, regardless of budget, and the debt will grow.
On the revenue side, their are taxes, but again, if their is high unemployment, the revenue will fall short. And debt will go up.Control again is when they reach the total debt ceiling.
Now, if you want to bring in more tax revenue by changing the tax code, congress must change the law – and you need the votes.
I’m also no expert just from remembering things.

Most of the damage is done in acquisition. The FAR restricts Government officials from buying things directly from a manufacturer, and DoD contracting offices must be used for all contracted services. These contract offices add their 10% fees to any contract, so if you’re letting a contract for $10M another Million is added for their fees.

To buy goods you must go through a reseller. You can’t deal directly with a manufacturer. Thus you have a built-in 10% additional cost, no matter what. The Government buys a $20 hammer for $100 due to acquisition regulations. We pay thousands of people, to make things as expensive to buy as possible.

Yes, we need a lot of acquisition rules changed, and we could save Billions.

Believe we could go further. Frien d was the Navy Budget officer.
Claimed. for example – you could walk thru Pentagon and cut third of staff. Someone in some Asst D office writes a paper, then gets staffed thru four or five other officers, then back to original office nd start all over. Full time jobs program.
And then. there are facilities. Try going and eliminating and unnecessary base – remember BRAC. There is huge money/jobs in facilities.
Enough for now. Agree on procurement. Would love to build a ship or a new airplane for DOD.

Listened to Coach Billicheck (sp?) on NFL radio on way home from work yesterday. He was asked a question on Goff’s and Darnold’s int’s. The guy had an interesting take on int’s. He thought 70% of int’s had multiple player eitiologies, that is not solely the qb’s fault. He thought 10% or so of int’s were solely on the intended receiver. He even laid some blame on play calls during certain situations. I was amazed at how much knowledge he conveyed in such a short amount of time. He knows football. Made me feel like a dumb dumb.

I’m worried that the Lions winning against Houston will give them even more confidence since Goff threw 5 picks and now he knows “even if I play terribly, we can still win”. Gonna be even harder to take them down now.

Also, why doesn’t Flores tell his defense to hold on every down? It seems we are going back to the “Legion of Boom” days where they don’t call PI or holding even when extremely obvious (clear directive by the NFL this year, along with calling “illegal procedure about 5 times a game). Detroit seems to get away with it a lot (even with Arnold getting called about once per game, he interferes and holds every play and knows they won’t call it every down). Why don’t we do that? It seems to work.

Just think you’re pretty damn lucky to win when your QB throws five INT’s and you’d be wise to realize that. But as you say, we’ll see.
Now by the same thinking, when your QB throws three INT’s and your offense doesn’t score even one TD, you’re pretty lucky to win an NFL game. Guessing our guys know that though.

The day after, I simply meditate on the nature of football.

Wednesday, I start gathering data on the teams, read injury reports, etc. for a couple of hours.

Thursday I spend most of the workday making my pick for the Thursday night game. It is important to get that one and start off on the right foot.

Friday, more mediation but this time on the highlights of each of the previous week’s games, so I can get an idea of where teams are at as a whole.

Saturday, I get up at 4 a.m. and start making my picks. I finish roughly 4 a.m. Sunday. Then I sleep until noon and start following the games, willing them to go the way I picked.

Skoloholics Pick ‘Em League Update #10

I continue my roller-coaster ride. Last week, I ended up in last place in the weekly standings. This week, I was only one point away from tying first place. Fortunately, I am awarded 100 bonus points for every pick ’em league update I write, which means I lead everyone by a comfortable margin for Champion of the Universe. The first thing I will do when I ascend the throne is to eliminate the Department of Education. They had their chance, an thay blue it.

Overall, here is where we sit:

Some shuffling has occurred. Bowbunch must have been out hunting 16 pointers in real life while the rest of us live sadly in front of our computer screens. As a result, he missed picks and dropped down into the realm of JacksonVike and Little Fishin’. The three of them are battling to stay out of the cellar in places 9-11 and rise up another level. Plenty of weeks remain to the season, so it is possible.

Freezy and I sit in no man’s land at 7 and 8. I guess we will just hang out at Freezy’s lake house and see how next week falls. Maybe we can escape the little island we find ourselves on. Otherwise, more partying in the lake house, I guess.

4-6 is a fairly close race. I’d rather be fishing, Surly Viking and DE Viking could all leap each other at any moment. They could leap each other like they got Mexican jumping beans in their pocket. They could leap each other like Superman over a building. They could leap each other like a frog…well, you get the idea.

NoDakRube has staked a solid claim on podium position three. And, really, second place is not too far out of reach. Kirk is still good is only nine points ahead of him. Maybe Kirk is still good should change his name to Kirk will still check down when the game is on the line. Yes, that’s right, I’m bitter at Kirk for screwing me again this week.

Bleeding Purple ‘N Gold maintains his stranglehold on first place. He opened up some breathing room this week. Obviously, he is not a very good socialist, what with the way he is hoarding points while the rest of us go without. Time for a revolution!

We only had one Genius Pick this week. Kirk is still good is the only player to pick Miami over the Rams. This is suspicious. It makes me wonder if he is a mob member and knew the Rams would take a dive.

We did have a number of Iconoclast Picks. Freezy and JacksonVike were the only ones to take Tampa over San Fran. Kirk is still good is the only one to take Jax over the Vikes, which was almost a Genius Pick. Stupid Vikes. DE and JacksonVike were the only ones to take Dallas over the Eagles (why do McCarthy and Zimmer still have jobs?), and they were also the only ones to take the Texans over the Lions.

Everyone got Baltimore, Buffalo, KC, Chargers and Cardinals right. Everyone got Chicago and Atlanta wrong. At least Kirk screwed everyone and not just me. It basically never fails. If I pick Kirk to win, he loses. If I pick him to lose, he wins.

All I can say is…

That happened close to where I grew up. The mom and daughter did not want to have anything to do with the dad. Which seemed weird, as he was a super nice guy. The courts originally granted him 50% custody, so the mom and daughter came up with a story, that the mom caught him molesting her. He served his sentence, and when he was released he came back to the area and they claimed he tried it again, he ended up driving his truck into a tree, on purpose. Survived that, so he crawled out of the truck and hung himself with his belt.

The daughter later admitted to lying about her dad.

Darnold does not equal Goff. If you have a qb that has proven himself and then has a night where he throws 5 picks, you can legitimately say he had a bad night. Maybe he had a spat with his wife before the game or his dog is sick and he wants to speed home and get it to the vet. If you have a qb that has not proven himself and throws 3 picks, then he is open to criticism.

VP… all NFL QB’s have bad days. Every single one of them. Giving one guy a pass, because his team has been more successful, is wrong-headed. True in Darnolds past performances there is a trend to throw a lot of interceptions, but this year, with this team, he has shined pretty brightly. Remember, he’s still new to KOC’s system, which requires a lot of the QB.

Ultimately, Darnold has demonstrated this year that he can throw the ball under pressure into tight windows. That was the question we needed to have answered coming into the season. That’s the good news. He’s going to make mistakes, because every single QB in the league makes mistakes though. That is what it is. It’s not possible to play perfectly every game. It’s like pitching a no hitter. It only happens rarely. What you need from a QB is being good overall, over the course of the season.

The boat dock is always a deep breath moment. Boat trailer drops out of sight through the rear window, can catch glimpses of the trailer tires in the side mirrors, will I or won’t I drop the trailer off the edge of the ramp?

Then there’s the underrated terror of getting the boat back on the trailer in a strong river current. Sure to attract unsolicited help from the shoreline faithful in their lawn chairs.

Here’s a pro tip. If you can’t see the trailer in either mirror, it’s directly behind you. If you can see it in one mirror or the other, the trailer is crooked and you should turn the top of the steering wheel slightly towards the trailer.

My dad made me back the boat up our long winding driveway every time we got back from fishing, so I’m a natural at this point. That said, the pipes are nice because the boat itself is very low profile, and it’s nice to be able to see it through the center mirror when going down the road.

I sold my camper to my in-laws a few years ago. They had a year round spot on a lake, where they had a camper and sold it. there was a deck already in place from the other camper, so I had to back it in and get it close enough to the deck for it to be usable.

We get there, and there are about 20 people ready willing and able to give me all of the advice, I really don’t want. I start backing it up and this guy walks up with what appeared to be his eighth or ninth beer of the day in his hand. Stands at my passenger window trying to tell me which direction to go. I come to a full stop and just stare at him. He says ” I suppose you want to be able to see your mirror”. I say yep.

He moves out of the way, and I proceed to back the camper up to within half an inch of the deck.

When The Teacher turns on an especially bad show (looking at you Outlander, Only Murders in the Building) I just but on the headphones and listen to music or YouTube videos until she is done with the silly stuff.

That was when I started leaving the room whenever she watched it.

You don’t say? I must have misunderstood when Black Jack Randall said he wanted him to surrender his body in every way? I thought that meant he wanted to clip his toenails? You meant that scene where he is on top of him grunting away isn’t him helping open a pickle jar?

Well gee this has changed my whole outlook on things. Maybe I’ll stop designing my rattlesnake fang syringe and growing penicillin in my bread cupboard.

Ben, not Bow. I don’t have that sort of time to waste on you guys. MT made a couple comments that would have a nice home in the summary as well.

Only after several Rep Senator decided to invite and escort him to the event.

Yeah, they stole as many seats as they could with the week-long deposits of votes, but the D’s will have majority anyway because of RINO’s.

A lot of RINOs have been eliminated this election.
Plus any Republicans will have a hard time going against DT.
As long as the keep to Democruds from playing Pelosi Games it is a win.
